Once upon a time, when your mother was just a little girl, there was a little farmhouse hidden away among high hills, in a place where time seems to have stopped. It belonged to a wonderful old woman who had as many treasured secrets as she did wrinkles, and smelled forever of homemade cookies. This woman, known only as Grandmother Dearest, had countless grandchildren–and though she loved them all very much, her favorite was Sally Darling, the youngest.
It was one delicious summer day when Sally Darling first came to Grandmother Dearest's home to live until something called Summer Holiday–whatever that is–was over. While Sally Darling loved her grandmother, as all grandchildren tend to do, she knew she was going to miss her friends from home while she was away.
“Now Sally Darling,” said Grandmother Dearest as she welcomed her grandchild into her home. “I know that you are lonely and, try as I might, I’ll never be able to romp and play with you as your little friends at home do. But if you tarry upstairs to the attic, I’m sure that you won’t be so homesick any longer.”
So Sally did just that. The attic was wonderfully dusty and filled with curious things, but she hardly saw anything that she could romp and play with. That was, of course, until she found the doll. Though the rest of the attic was covered in dust, this doll looked almost new, with beautiful porcelain skin and lace-like hair.
“I’ll call you Lady,” said Sally Darling, and tapped the dolly’s nose. To her surprise, the doll’s eyes opened.
“Do you mind not to tap so hard?” said Lady, wiggling her nose. “That smarts!”
It was then that Sally Darling discovered that Lady was not alone–there were hundreds of dolls all around her, peeping out among heirlooms and precious keepsakes. Then, Sally Darling realized she would never be alone.
Many happy summers passed and, unfortunately, Sally Darling learned that she was not made of the same ageless porcelain as her secret playmates. She grew into a beautiful lady, and, for a time, cast away her memories with the dolls as childhood fantasy.
But not too long ago, Sally Darling went to visit her grandmother again in her farmhouse that time could not touch.
“Go into the attic,” said Grandmother Dearest. At first, Sally Darling didn’t understand. The old woman smiled. “They are waiting for you.”
Throughout the many years, the dolls had waited for her–but Sally Darling knew that she could no longer keep the dolls to herself. They were the most precious dolls in the world; they were her friends. Gathering up the hundreds of dolls, Sally Darling took them out in the world, with a promise to find each of them a loving home. And you know what? I think she’ll do just that.
