- Shell puffs are about the same size as any snail, and can be found in most gardens so long as there is enough food and water for them. They prefer to eat flowers, but can also eat berries, fruits, seeds and even bugs.
- They have exceptional hearing which allows them to hear danger coming, as well as sharp reflexes to allow them to escape when ever the need arises.
- Interesting enough, shell puff’s can also walk on almost any vertical surface whether it’s a rock face or the roof of someone’s house. The pads on their feet have the same structure as a gecko’s feet, but don’t ask me to explain how gecko’s can do it…
- A shell puff can communicate by squeaking, grunting, growling, purring, barking, and perhaps other noises too. As for the human tongue they can speak it, but because they are so small it can be difficult to hear what they are saying. To compensate for this they use their large tails as a flag system; by waving them around in the air they can send signals to other snail puffs or people who are a long distance away. However they must be careful, as predators will be able to see them too…
- The shell is the most important thing to a shell puff; It is their home in which they live and sleep. They will not go very far from their shell if they can help it and only for short amounts of time as they forage for food.
- It is made of lightweight yet sturdy material, so they are able to be moved to and from with ease. However they usually hide their shell instead of carting it around, as they find it hard to grip it with their paws while walking (no opposable thumbs see), and the shell will not balance properly on their back. The hiding places range from small burrows and tree trunks to under rocks and pot plants; where ever the shell can be kept out of the way of harm.
- If a puff senses danger, it will retreat immediately to its shell where it will hide until the danger passes. If by chance the shell or suitable shelter is not available, it will either fight off the danger or play dead.
