Plot:
On the night that five friends throw a going-away party in New York City, a giant monster attacks the city. The film depicts their attempts to survive the attack, as told from the point of view of their handheld video camera.
Rob (Michael Stahl-David) records Beth (Odette Yustman), apparently after a night spent together. The video then cuts to one month later, where Rob's brother Jason (Mike Vogel) and his girlfriend Lily (Jessica Lucas) are planning a surprise going-away party for Rob, who has accepted a job in Japan. Hudson "Hud" (T. J. Miller) is given the camera and tasked with documenting Rob's last night in the United States, spending his time recording messages to Rob from the party guests and attempting to grab the attention of Marlena (Lizzy Caplan). A confrontation occurs between Rob and Beth after it is revealed that the two friends had sex with each other, and Beth leaves the party with her date.
The building suddenly shakes, a loud noise is heard, and large parts of the city briefly loose power. From the roof, the friends see a large explosion in the distance and they flee to the street, where the head of the Statue of Liberty lands as further explosions and a gigantic creature are glimpsed in the distance. As the friends attempt to leave Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge, they stop when Rob receives a phone call from Beth, who is trapped in her apartment. Jason is killed when the creature destroys the bridge.
U.S. Military ground forces arrive to battle the creature, while Rob and his remaining friends resolve to rescue Beth. As they make their way to Beth's apartment, they are attacked by smaller creatures in the subway tunnel, one of which bites Marlena. As they reach a military field hospital, Marlena's body begins to bleed rapidly and explodes. After receiving information regarding an evacuation strategy in advance of the planned bombing of Manhattan, the surviving friends continue to Beth's apartment, which has almost toppled. Finding Beth alive, but injured, they make their way to the evacuation site, where Lily is placed in the last seat of a departing helicopter.
Rob, Beth and Hudson board another helicopter, which is damaged by the creature during a military assault and crashes in Central Park. They survive the crash, but Hud is then killed by the creature. Rob and Beth take shelter under a bridge, where they each briefly address anyone who might find the camera. Sirens sound and an explosion collapses the bridge, partially covering the camera in rubble. Rob and Beth are heard alive, before a second explosion completely covers the camera in rubble. The final scene returns to footage from the month before, where Rob and Beth are enjoying a date at Coney Island. In the distance something falls out of the sky and splashes unnoticed into the water.

"...a surreptitiously subversive, stylistically clever little gem of an entertainment..."
"It's The Blair Godzilla Project--and that's a compliment."
"...a terrific movie, filled with spectacle and a surprising amount of humor, which makes up for its lack of terror or emotional impact."

Sequel confused
When confronted with a sequel, Director Mat Reeves had this to say
"While we were on set making the film we talked about the possibilities and directions of how a sequel can go. The fun of this movie was that it might not have been the only movie being made that night, there might be another movie! In today’s day and age of people filming their lives on their iphones and handy cams, uploading it to youtube…That was kind of exciting thinking about that.
There's a moment on the Brooklyn Bridge, and there was a guy filming something on the side of the bridge, and Hud sees him filming and he turns over and he sees the ship that's been capsized and sees the headless Statue of Liberty, and then he turns back and this guy's briefly filming him. In my mind that was two movies intersecting for a brief moment, and I thought there was something interesting in the idea that this incident happened and there are so many different points of view, and there are several different movies at least happening that evening and we just saw one piece of another."

~1-19-08 - Box Office sales place #2 in all time opening night records
Initial box office reports put the Cloverfield opening day total at around $16.7 Million. If that number stands the take would place Cloverfield at #2 all-time (less than $2 Million off the record) for a single day in the month of January wedged between Meet The Fockers and Titanic.

~Two Corp. Websites that tie into plot line are Down + New PHOTOs of Pre-Plot 1-18-08
Today is the official first day of the Cloverfield movie and 2 of the viral sites tied into the experience are down. The first one is Tagruato Corp. Their site is not accessible and only features a black screen with the kanji and katakana in green that spell out 'Under Required Matenance'
The other site is T.I.D.O. WAVE, the anti-Tagruato site that aims to bring the autracities of the large corporation to the public. Their site is locked and only features the below image. If you look closely you will see an entry dated Jan. 17th but it's hard to read. An Internal Affairs Department seal is pasted over the site.

also in 1-18-08 Website they uploaded a few new pics.

-The first looks like it could be the possible remains of a few whales that had been slaughtered and left on the beach. I can only speculate that this was done by our beloved monster, for one of the whales has a huge bite out of the side of it
-The second seems to be a fisherman in a pool of blood in the ocean.
-The Third though looks like it's a high quarantined fight on the sea, shot with a night vision camera. I wonder what they're firing at, Maybe our little friend?
-the fourth and fifth though are pictures of the oil drill that went down in the Atlantic ocean, from the news cast clips. If you look closely at the fourth though there are two boxes that have been filtered out.

The monster:
Wikipedia
The Cloverfield creature is unique in several ways. It first and foremost appears vertebrate and is bilaterally symmetric. The head is largely brachycephalic, somewhat resembling that of a human being in terms of gross structure. It possesses large teeth or perhaps a beak. Perhaps the most obvious unusual feature is its external lungs, vaguely resembling an axolotl's external gills (whereas Cloverfield's are red sacs, seen inflating and deflating as it respires). The creature has at least 3 pairs of limbs, with the largest being the two closest to the head. They are such that the elbow joint points in the anterior direction, as opposed to posterior in humans. The creature is a fist-walker similar to an orangutan. It is exceptionally agile, capable of moving quite quickly.
The most "normal" position of the creature appears to be with the middle limbs tucked under it (they are small and apparently largely vestigial), the rear legs bent, and using the hind legs and frontmost legs for locomotion. For unknown reasons, Clover possesses a very high degree of resilience, able to survive apparently largely unharmed amid a massive military attack including heavy machine gun fire, rocket launchers, air-to-surface missiles, carpet bombing, and finally a complete hammer-down attack involving what appears to be the largest non-nuclear strike able to be delivered by the military, such as a thermobaric weapon.
Based on the position of the eyes (both are even and facing the front, giving it binocular vision), its large teeth/beak, and aggressive behavior (it is seen "eating people" and attempts to consume one of the main characters during the film), Cloverfield is apparently a predator.
