-->Her mother sighed. "So, this ring in your nose is real?"
"Yes mom."
"And...the hair? You dyed it. Is this all yours?"
"They're called extensions. I get my hair done now mom."
"And your clothes...are they cheaper when they're that skimpy?"
"I made this outfit myself. I'm a designer. I told you both that." Evelyn looked at both her parents. They greeted her happily, but just like any other family member that lived down the road. Like she'd never really left. Or that they didn't care that she was back.
"Oh yes, now I remeber that. You...model too? You know, I don't want to know."
Her mother could really be a b***h at times. "Yes. I'm a designer and a model. I make lots of money. I live in an apartment in Manhattan."
"But you've come back home, I knew you would."
"Dad, I'm visiting. I took vacation time from work to come see you all."
"What, have you been too busy in the last two years to see us at all?"
"As a matter of fact, yes. I've been working my a** off."
"Evelyn Elizabeth, do not talk to you father like that."
Time to change the subject. "I'm going to go find my... friends now, I'll be back later."
"Alright, don't go skipping town on us without saying goodbye then."
And with that, Evelyn once again turned and walked right out the door.
She looked out to the single paved street that ran through the town. It was like a side street off a side street off a hidden road off a highway. That's how she remembered it as she hiked out with her things two years ago, and that's exactly how it was now that she returned.
People were outside, of course. Some were looking at her with raised brows, eyeing her outfit or her hair. Some were murmuring to each other. Some people didn't remember her, anything outside of this town was dead to them, just like this whole town seemed dead to her. She wondered how the gang was holding together, she imagined they were just the same without her, with the exception of some of them growing up.
