Quote:
My hide unto the Huntsman
So freely I would give,
My body to the hounds,
For I'd rather die than live:
So shoot him, whip him, strip him,
To the Huntsman let him go...

—Traditional song sung by the Mummers of Richmond, Yorkshire

What, you want a sample?
Hate to break it to you, dearie, but the art's not done yet.
I can guarantee you, though, the lineart'll be amazing, and hopefully my coloring will do it justice.

The closest you get to a sample:
Huh, a lineart contest?

Story Time!
As you walk down the street, rubbing your arms to ward off the chill and watching your steps so as not to trip on the cobblestones, you notice that things are...quieter than the should be. You may be in a sleepy little village, but surely there should be some noise, from somewhere. Maybe birds, or some farmer's dog on the loose, but there is nothing. Suddenly curious, you stop to look around. Little stone buildings, most of them houses, with the occasional sign for a bed and breakfast or a souvenir shop, crowd the street, and there's an occasional alleyway between buildings, like the one your standing next to. It's a typical little village in the off-season, when there are hardly any tourists about, and so hardly any activity no matter what time of day it is. There had been people about before, tending to their daily business, but they're all gone now. Looking for an answer you can't seem to find, you glance up at the sky, which is growing steadily darker...isn't it early yet for it to be getting dark, though?

Without warning, you feel a strong hand grip your shoulder, pulling you into the alleyway and out of your musings, and you're brought face-to-face with an old woman you haven't seen before. She's not frail, but tough and hard, like most of the people out here. She looks you up and down, her gaze stern, making you flinch under her scrutiny. When she speaks, however, there's concern in her voice.

"Y're not wantin' t' be outside...there's a storm brewin', if'n y' hadn't noticed."

"Ah, thanks, but I think I'll be alright, ma'am," you stutter.

"Not if y're caught in 't, y' won't be. 'Tisn't the storm what sends us all inside, child, but what comes with 't we be fearin'."

Skeptical, but intrigued, you ask, "What are you so afraid of?"

"Get y'rself inside, have a cup, an' I'll tell y' the story," she remarks, and motions for you to follow as she disappears into a doorway. With one last look at the approaching storm, you quickly do as you were told.

The Tales
Now, for those of you who aren't familiar with the Wild Hunt legends, I'll give you a brief (very brief) overview of them, as well as links that go more in-depth...they'll explain everything and do it more justice than I ever could. For those of you who already are familiar with the legends, I'll warn you ahead of time that while this shop has it's inspiration in them, things are going to be quite different.

Throughout the British Isles, Scandinavia, and Europe, there are long and persisting traditions of a spectral hunt. The legends vary from region to region, and vary greatly. The participants, the lead hunstman, the prey...everything is subject to change. Among those said to lead the chase are Odin, Herne the Hunter, King Arthur, Gwyn ap Nudd, and sometimes evenSatan. Among others, they may be accompanied by the recently deceased, the cursed, or those mortals simply unfortunate enough to be swept up when the Hunt passes.

In all cases, dogs and horses are in attendance, and are usually white, grey, or black in color. Among the names for the hounds of the Hunt are Gabriel Hounds, Cwn Annwn, and the Devil's Dandy Dogs. Some say that the Wisht, Yeth, or Heath Hounds are the souls of unbaptized children. A number of the hounds bear a resemblance to the Black Dog of another legend, whose appearance foretells misfortune or death (alternately, some Black Dogs will be of help to those who are kind to them). In comparison, not as much is known about the horses, but when Odin leads the Hunt he is said to ride his eight-legged horse Sleipnir, one of Loki's offspring.

The prey, too, varies a great deal, from a boar to a cow to the souls of the damned.

The War
The story, at its root, is a simple one. There are the Hunters, and there are the Hunted. Such has it been and such will it always be.

But this story does not end there, and much of it as yet remains unknown.

This is beyond predator and prey, beyond merely the Hunters and the Hunted. It is a story about good and evil, and the war between the damned and the blessed.

It is a war without end.

The Warriors
I ended up writing more for the Hunter than the Hunted, but that's only because I zoned out and got brief towards the end.

The Hunters
Horses:
Though one might be inclined to underestimate the horses, due to the fact that they lack the claws and fangs of their canine counterparts, they are not to be taken for granted. Their sheer size gives them power, and their intelligence is unrivaled among the Hunters. As such, they are often they are often designated to be the leaders in group situations, because they are typically the most fitted to such roles. However, they tend towards extreme arrogance, and look upon both types of dogs (and occasionally each other) as being beneath their hooves, so to speak. Horses are the closest Hunters come to having a ruling or noble class.
Mastiffs:
Overall, the most impressive of the Hunters, at least so far as looks are concerned...no one can beat them when it comes to intimidation (or drooling, for that matter). While not as large as a horse, for a dog they're huge. Heavily built, they're sturdy and strong, rivaling horses when it comes to sheer physical power. Due to their size and build, they're the slowest of the Hunters, but their fighting power more than makes up for it. Once caught by a mastiff, very few could stand a chance. However, they're not very intelligent (think: dumb brute).
Hounds:
They aren't small by any means, but they aren't going to win any size or strength contests. These aren't meant to impress or overpower...they're meant to outrun and outsmart. Just below the horses in overall intelligence, but far above the mastiffs in the same, their cunning is unrivaled. If a plan is needed, no matter how short the notice, a hound can come up with one. They lack the arrogance of the horses and the bluster of the mastiffs, preferring instead to keep quiet and thereby escape notice. They are vain and a bit conceited, but quietly so, aside from the occasional insult (which the mastiffs rarely understand, anyway). They've got speed on their side, and can have someone down before they even know what hit them. They don't get along well with others, even of their own kind, nor do they like to work together.

The Hunted
Deer:
Regal and well-mannered, deer have their speed and intelligence going for them. They don't think as well in the heat of the moment, but they are very intelligent. Deer rarely fight, preferring to rely on other tactics, such as leading an enemy astray, using their speed and light steps to their advantage. When cornered, though, their hooves (and antlers, in the case of stags) can do some serious damage. Very self-important, but still well-intentioned...sometimes timid. The nobles, if you will, of the Hunted.
Boars:
The brutes of the Hunted, caution is required when dealing with them. So far as strength goes, boars are the most dangerous of this group. Their tusks are something to be avoided at all costs. On top of it, they're powerhouses, and on occasion a berserker has been known to turn up. Boars are quick to anger, aggressive, and not very bright at all.
Foxes:
Swift, cunning, even a little devious sometimes. These are the least well-off in a fight if it comes to one, but they still know how to use their fangs. Their small size, quick minds, and quicker reflexes make sure it rarely comes to that, though. They're loners, don't play well with others, and serve mostly as spies and strategists.

As you can see, there are parallells in the two groups: horses and deer, mastiffs and boars, hounds and foxes.
Teh Stages
Well, now that you know what this is all about, I'll get down to the more mundane things, such as stages and the like.

First off, because they're spirits, they don't exactly 'grow.' They start off housed within an object, and gradually manifest themselves until they're of tangible form.

The first stage:
All Hunters begin as hunting knives, all Hunted begin as hunting horns. At this point, we're not sure which knives house which Hunters, or which horns house which Hunted. Once the first batch starts to manifest, we'll know what distinguishes them.

Materialization:
This is the part that takes a little while to happen...at the moment, we're not entirely certain exactly what happens, but after a time the creature inside will gradually begin to appear. Once they reach a certain point, they'll be able to see, speak, and hear, but they won't be able to do much else. They can't move, either, as they're still reliant upon their object. As they cannot touch or be touched, they are, for the most part, invulnerable.

Tangibility:
Now, they'll be able to do anything, and make use of all their senses. They'll be able to interact with others beyond just conversation. At this stage, they'll be able to fight, and can even incur injuries. They may now leave their objects behind, BUT they will still keep their object hidden away somewhere.

Death?
Well, it stands to reason that if they can be injured, they can also die. What happens when one dies, however, is not known. One way to kill any of them, whether they're tangible or still manifesting, is to destroy an individual's object.
[Note: Yes, they can be killed during RP, but it had better be good, and it goes without saying that the owner and have to have agreed to it (over PM, so no one else will know what's going to happen). Don't worry, if your pet is killed, you won't lose it...but something very interesting will happen.]

Breeding:
As yet, nothing is known about this. It is probable that an equivalent exists, but it will be some time before this is put into place.
The Fun Part (aka: roleplaying!)
NPCs:
I, and perhaps a few others of my choosing, will also be involved...as the gods, among other things. Don't ask me if you can be an NPC, please.
They are only seen when the wish to be seen, and only by whom they wish to see them. They can and do see and interact with one another, though they don't necessarily get along.

Deer: The White Hind (to be played by: Safaia)
  • The Hind acts as a sort of messenger, appearing in dreams to give advice, inspiration, or even a warning. She often heralds good fortune, and may literally lead followers to it.

Boar: The Golden-Bristled
  • A warrior god, he rarely appears in dreams, and never to anyone but a Boar. Swift to anger, demands absolute devotion from his followers. Those he favors highly, he will bestow with the gift of the berserker. Otherwise, he will goad his followers into action if he feels they are slacking.

Fox: The Bronze Fox of Theumessos (to be played by: Angmar)
  • A master of escape and deception, he may appear to followers in dreams to assist them somehow (his advice, however, may be cryptic and two-sided), or they may catch a glimpse of his tail 'rounding a corner, showing them the way out.

Horse: The Grey of Macha (to be played by: Meepfur)
  • A god of warrior honor, devotion to cause, and revenge. He will appear to spur on his followers, or even to chastise them. Can sometimes be seen in the midst of a battle, though he, like the other gods, is forbidden from actually participating.

Mastiff: The Black Shuck
  • Will sometimes appear to his followers (though he has been known to appear to other Hunters) as a warning of something dire about to occur. If a follower earns his favor, he may lead them to a 'gift' of sorts. Never speaks.

Hound: The White Hound of Lugh (to be played by: Elocyn)
  • Info for the Lugh-hound coming soon (as in, when I stop being lazy).

Your role:
[I'll make this more detailed, less vague, etc. later.]
Like I said, humans have nothing to do with this war...so even though you may roleplay yourself a bit, you're not going to be human. For the moment, we'll call you a Fairy Guardian. Said Guardians are bound to a temple, of which there are two...one for the Hunters, and one for the Hunted. The primary role of a Guardian is to prevent any harm from coming to the object before its Beast manifests. Thus, they are tied to a single room in the temple, where the objects lie. While you'll guard 'your' object for as long as it remains in the room, there's a catch: even when the Beast manifests and then becomes tangible, they have no idea you're there. They can't see you, hear you, or anything else. The Beasts know that something protects the objects, but they assume it's some sort of holy protection and leave it at that. Once a Beast becomes tangible, they often choose to remove their object from the room and take it elsewhere. You will remain in the room with the other Fairy Guardians (with whom you can interact), and the object will be beyond your protection.

Roleplay:
RP is absolutely necessary for these pets (they are not journal-based, though). First, with you as their fairy guardian. Then as they manifest and become aware of things, and finally as they live, makes friends and enemies, fight, and go about other such business. If you are inactive for a prolonged period of time (say, a month or two) without giving me any warning or reason, and you don't respond to my PMs, your pet will be taken away and go to someone who will RP with it.
Non-RP pets will probably be available through flatsale and auction, but they'll most likely be few and far between, at least until there are a good number of RP ones out. Pet trades will be exempt from necessary roleplay, but it's obviously encouraged. Those sold through non-RP flatsales may not be roleplayed, in order to prevent people from using them to get out of the writing-required RP flatsales.
Acquiring One
Flatsales
As I've noted, these are RP-heavy pets, so I want to make sure I have owners who are good at roleplaying. Every flatsale will involve a writing contest, the details of which will be posted just prior to the sale. There won't be any entry fee, of course (those are just absurd, in my opinion), but the winners will pay 5k for their pet.

All told, the first flatsale will probably last a good three hours. A bit more, with time factored in for judging. This is (roughly) how everything will work:

At the appointed time, two prompts will be posted. Prompts that may or may not relate directly to Beasts. One prompt is to be answered by those who are going to be trying for a Hunter, one for those going for a Hunted (you will have one hour to respond). Based on the responses to those prompts, I'll narrow things down. There's no specific number it'll be narrowed down to...if I get twelve excellent responses, that's how many go on, same if it's eight or any other number. I will pick an equal number of people who answered each prompt (say, 6 Hunted and 6 Hunters). Once things have been narrowed down, there'll be as much as two hours of actual RP among the remaining, at the end of which I'll pick the six people who will be receiving Beasts. I and at least one other person will be participating in the RP as well..maybe more, depending upon how many of my 'gods' are available.

While which prompt you choose to answer determines whether you get Hunter or Hunted, I'll be deciding which Beast you actually get based on your RP (as in, which Beast would suit you for RPing purposes). Of course, no one will no for certain who got what until they actually start to manifest.

Depending upon how this format for things goes through, it's probable that all flatsales will be held this way. It sounds like a lot, I know, but I want to get a feel for how you RP, interact with others, and so on.

Auctions
I want to hold auctions, and intend to do so, but I still want to ensure quality of RP. So, before you bid in an auction, you'll need to RP to a prompt for me. Further details will be included in the auctions themselves.

Contests
It's likely that there will be a contest or two down the line with an object as a prize, so don't despair if you miss out in a flatsale or auction.

Pet Trades, etc.
There are some things I'd be more than willing to trade for. If you're interested, run it by me and we'll see (I'd feel weird listing them, so just ask).
I also adore art of my OCs, so trading a pet for art might also be an option.

...the other possibility is that I might give some away to deserving people.

Well, okay, I lied. I do have a preview for you. Sort of.
It's a little, unfinished piece of the map I'm working on, but am nowhere near done with yet (and I promise, I'm better at coloring than I am at cartography.)

Alright, so you might be thinking something along the lines of 'What? Another pet that has to be RP'd?'. For me, it has nothing to do with wanting to keep owners 'active,' or that sort of thing. Instead, it has everything to do with the fact that I love to RP, so I made a pet for other people who love to do the same. The more people, the more characters we have, the more interesting things are going to get.

I'll admit, I don't have everything figured out yet. I might add 'quests' of a sort to boost stats, maybe even for special items. There are a lot of possibilities, and I have to get them all straight in my head.

I promise you, though, I'm not going to be some sort of RP-Nazi. Granted, you can't make your Hunter some flowery, bunny-loving pacifist, but I'm not going to try to control you character and how you RP it. That's your business.

If you have any suggestions or ideas, please let me know! I want to make this as interesting and fun as possible for everyone.

...and if you're sick of seeing RP-required pets? So be it, that's your own view of things. I'm not doing this to be all 'OMG RP PETS R SOOOO KEWL!!' I'm doing this because I want an animal-oriented RP with a good plot, but one that you can play with. Also one that's something more than '*the pretty stalion reared and looked cool*'. I have another shop that's no RP, and one on hiatus that's completely optional, but no one ever did. Let me have my fun with this one.
Coming eventually...
