Dearest Gaians, Moderators, and Administrators,
I have posted one last time to relate my story of the unfortunate events that have led to the banning of myself and my love Nephilim in the hopes that our side of the story may be heard and our accounts unbanned. Even my main account, an account that I hadn’t even logged into that day was banned. Those who read this post may or may not have already formed an opinion - I implore you to read this through completely, even if you have. And please post your opinions no matter what they are - I would like to address them all myself.
Yesterday, we were banned because we had tripped the “copy glitch” and were accused of exploiting it for profit. I am here to state that this accusation is completely untrue – not only did we not do this but we took steps to get rid of the copied items without harming other Gaians as well as specifically not turning a profit on them. As I write this, I write as a Gaian pushed to the point of leaving Gaia – one that hopes that with his last message, a grievous wrong will be rectified, not for his sake, but for the sake of the one he loves.
Here is the story exactly as it happened yesterday as well as all the details of the glitch that I know of. I may have missed small details in my sleepy state but the main ideas are intact. I implore the users of Gaia to post here to voice their comments, good or bad, and debate this story together to determine if we were innocent or not. I implore the Moderators of Gaia to read this in order to hear our side of the story – the story that was never allowed to be voiced before our banning. I implore, most of all, to the admin to read this in hopes that they will see the need to upgrade the servers so that more Gaians are not hurt in the future by glitches, and that they know exactly what the details of this glitch are so they can fix it if they haven’t yet.
In the early afternoon yesterday, I logged onto Gaia and my private MSN as I always do to spend my limited time online for the afternoon. Those of you who know me know that here, at my home, I am sanctioned by my parents to stay online for online a limited amount of time, and that I have a very slow and crappy dial up connection. I found Gaia in a disarray – every few minutes I would be encountered by a screen saying “message_die() was accessed multiple times. This isn’t supposed to happen. Was message_die() contained in the message tail?” (I know the ending isn’t verbatim but its close enough) Despite the errors, I decided to brave it out and vend as best I could, since I had no other choice – errors and lag happen all the time on Gaia and if I let that stop me from vending, I would never get anywhere. Suddenly it came to my attention that user z0ran had more than 4 items in his store – I believe there were 6 June Letters. Intrigued, I Pmed him to ask what was going on and after a few PMs, we determined that the errors and store phenomenon were the work of the admin upgrading the stores. I remember being pretty excited at the prospect of putting more than 4 items into the store, and chatted with Nephilim about it for awhile.
At this point, I began to put items into the vend to sell, items I had purchased the day before. Among them were a Trunk, a Coon Tail, a June, and a Nitemare Bustier. Upon inserting the bustier, I received the message_die() error – annoyed, I first tried to refresh the page and after that wouldn’t work, I clicked the back button into my store and plugged it back in. After waiting awhile for it to load, I clicked the confirm button again, thinking that my dial up connection was lagging again as it sometimes does. Upon entering the vend I found that I had not one but 2 Nitemare Bustiers in the vend. Priced at 6900, one was sold in minutes and I quickly canceled the other to give me some time to think.
Obviously it was a glitch – I thought nothing of it. After all, glitches happen all the time in the vend – on one occasion, for example, while Nephilim and I were vending, we both saw a cheap Jack’s Despair, and raced to buy it – inadvertently, both of us got it, probably by accidentally buying it at the same time. On another occasion, I had purchased a ^_^ paper bag, and it wouldn’t appear in the vend. Jokingly we called it the paper bag of doom and upon trading it to a fellow vend-whore [Mileena] for her ^_^ paper bag, the item disappeared.
I couldn’t sell the June letter at the 3850 gold I priced it at, so as I normally do when something won’t sell for my low prices, I canceled it from my vend and inserted it again so it would appear at the top of the vend. After a few iterations of this, I put the June in and it duplicated after my hand slipped and I double clicked. This is the second duplication and my curiosity got the better of me. I reasoned that my inadvertent double click while on dial up was the cause of it and told Nephilim about my theory. To test it on her cable modem, Nephilim used a Jacked-Up Shirt. To our mutual surprise it produced not one but 3 new Jacked-Up Shirts. We talked about it for awhile and then decided to simply continue to vend as normal – I remember smiling at seeing my theory proved.
However, that’s all we did with the glitch on purpose.
I can remember missing Angelic Gloves for 12K while we were vending normally and got annoyed so decided that I would just log off and come back later that night after the lag and errors died down since my time is limited on the computer anyway. As I was about to log off, I inserted my September Letter as well as a few other items, including the June, a Coon Tail, and a Nov in case they sold while I was gone. Getting the error screen upon inserting the September, I tried refreshing, rather annoyed that the screen was still there upon multiple refreshing. In a bad mood, I mashed it for about 15 seconds until it finally said that my item was inserted. However, upon doing this, I returned to my conversation with Nephilim on MSN and she told me that there were multiple Septembers in the vend. Disbelieving her, since the screen had been in errors while I was refreshing, I clicked back into the vend to find that indeed there were multiple September Letters – 3 total – 2 together and one apart.
We laughed and talked for awhile and determined that we would trade one Shirt for one September to see if they would delete like the Paper Bag of Doom did, or would stay, joking to each other saying that it was a fair deal since they had both been products of the glitch. At this point, there was an announcement stating that Gaia would be under maintenance for 15 minutes – I confirmed the trade and then went to log off. And stopped.
The September Letter had apparently vanished.
It was no longer a laughing matter, even less so because of my previous encounters with glitches on Gaia and knowledge that this could be potentially devastating if we weren’t careful. We could accidentally sell the virtual items to people and they would vanish in the trade windows. We could stick the virtual items into the vend and people would buy them, not knowing that they were glitchy items, essentially profiting at another’s expense. If we tried to get rid of them by selling them to the store, we might lose the original item, losing approximately 155K in the case of Nephilim’s Shirt and about a million and a few hundred in the case of my September Letter. Gaia was going to be down for maintenance, and I had to leave anyway since my time was up, so I sent Nephilim her Shirt again and left after taking out the September Letters so others wouldn’t buy them and get screwed over while I was gone. She kept the Shirt and I kept the Letter so we wouldn’t get rid of the real ones, and waited for an announcement from Lanzer thinking that we had washed our hands clean of the incident by not using the glitch for profit. I logged off and Nephilim stayed online.
That was the last thing I heard about it until after 11:00 PM Mountain Time, which was when I returned to my house after roleplaying D20 for a few hours with my real life friends. I found that my mother had done away with my internet connection by unplugging the phone line to my computer, and so I begged her to let me on for a half hour to say good night to my love Nephilim. Finally she relented and let me log on at 11:25 PM. I logged on MSN to apologize to Nephilim for being on so late and to tell her good night, and then she told me the news.
“Kalec: Hey love, sorry I’m on so late – my mother took away my internet connection for awhile and I managed to convince her to give me a half hour for tonight.

Alura: We got banned.”
Yes…we had been banned. No warning, no PM – nothing. Apparently Kenshin, Rayne, and Jester were banned too – the 6 of us being the only 6 out of potentially hundreds that had been affected by the glitch to be banned. Nephilim had safely purged her account of the copies after I left by trading them to mules only to have the Moderators state that she did it to keep the shirts. She had tried to express her side of the story but they wouldn’t listen – I saw a thread in which her name was being defended and the Moderators kept saying that she had done it on purpose to keep the items when in fact she had done it for the opposite reason. She had tried to purge my account of the lone September Letter copy but had been too late – I had already been banned.
And that means both accounts…. My vending mule Lindin and the account I didn’t even use in a few days – my main account Kalec.
Now, if we had sold those glitchy items into the vend to unwitting people, or had continued to use the glitch over and over to get tons of items I could see how we would have been banned and would not be writing this right now. If we had been asked to get rid of the items that we had ended up with and held onto in order not to make mistakes and we hadn’t complied, I could see why we would be banned and wouldn’t contest this. However, not only was our side of the story not heard, but we were banned for doing the right thing and either purging our items from our accounts safely, or holding onto them so we wouldn’t chance losing the originals. We were banned even though we did –not- exploit the glitch while literally hundreds of others (you know who you are) had not only copied all day but had sold those copied items into the vend. What had started out as an accident and turned into a joke had turned into something deadly serious and we didn’t want to mess with it, and we were banned for doing the right thing.
Yesterday, I saw that the Moderators had banned Nephilim for sending trades with the items to mules. Neither of us contests that because it is the simple truth. Again, I iterate that she did not do this with the intention of keeping the glitched items but instead was attempting to purge her account of the copied items while keeping her normal Jacked Shirt intact. To the Mods - You say that she couldn’t have known they would delete – I say look at our single trade of September and Jacked Shirt – the one in which the Jacked Shirt copy was deleted and see for yourself that we knew that it would delete, both from prior experience with Paper Bag of Doom glitch and that particular trade during the Copy Glitch. Instead of selling the glitchy items into the vend to purge them, or sell them all to the store, losing her hard-earned Shirt, she did it the only way that she could without hurting anyone – trade them to delete the items from her inventory safely. I find it appalling that she should be penalized by the worst way known on Gaia, a banning, for doing the right thing while hundreds of others continued to and I know continue to sell those glitchy items into the vend. Nephilim has always been an independent Gaian who likes to work for her own things. She has exchanged for hours, spending as much of her waking moments as possible there. After the vend went up she spent her time there, working until she completed her final big quest for all the major items on Gaia that she wanted, eliminating her wishlist and leaving her with only a few store items that she may want to get later, should it strike her fancy. And she did it with negligible help from anyone, including me - I am her Gaian husband and she won’t even borrow gold from me because of her morals. I find her banning to be inexcusable – she didn’t deserve it at all.
Similarly, I am appalled that I am banned before even given a chance to voice my side of the story, and for doing the right thing. Those of you who know me or my reputation know that I have always made a very honest living, working very hard and for long hours for every digitized piece of gold or item that I have owned. You will also know that I am by all Gaian standards “rich” – I own close to 17 million in items and gold that I earned over the course of the 6 months I have been on Gaia, even after losing millions to scams and giving my Gaian wife and online-girlfriend Nephilim a Rose Corsage purchased for 4 million in pure. I have given away close to 2 million to others intentionally, doing favors for a few friends, selling things to people for less, giving people items or gold. Recently, the Bear Hat stolen from me because I was nice and loaned it to a “friend” was returned to me. I have earned millions not by scamming, hacking, botting, or heinously exploiting glitches – no – I earned it by spending hours and hours on the site, specifically the exchange where I hade money in a store like anyone else on Gaia, and most recently with the introduction of the feature, through vending. I earned up over 15 million for a Halo offer through my Kalec account in the exchange from scratch before buying the Corsage. When my trades were locked up during the Grizzly investigation, I started a new character Lindin to vend, and starting with 2 Enchanted Trunks and an Angelic Headband, I worked and worked for weeks until I ended up with 3.2 Million in items and gold. Tell me why I would have any inclination to even want to profit illegally for the money, especially when my moral integrity told me to completely stop vending for the day when I determined the glitch to be a potentially repeatable glitch, which could be done either purposely or by accident.
Instead of exploiting the glitch or doing anything more to jeopardize other Gaians or myself, I logged out and held onto the one copied September and she had held onto her Shirts in wait for announcements, and were promptly banned while others copied items multiple times and sold them to others, exploiting the glitch purposefully intending to profit from it. If we had truly wanted to profit, we would have continued to copy on purpose with the items that we would profit most with - I had Portable Headphones and Grizzly Hat available to me and she had Minis and a Corsage – neither of us copied them. Before leaving for the day I saw clusters of Junes, OMG Hats, Jacked-Shirts, and even a line of at least 10 Hockey Masks in the vend by people who then sold them for cheap to other users. A good deal in vending suddenly became a signal of someone cheating the system using the glitchy copies they had received for exploiting the glitch.
And with so many people doing it on purpose, we were banned for not exploiting it intentionally. That is a fact that I find appalling.
I implore you to unban Nephilim’s account because she didn’t deserve the banning. She did the best she could to rid herself of the glitchy items and did not intentionally exploit the glitch to profit and should not have been banned. She traded her items away to mules with the intent of ridding herself of the items – had she wanted to keep them, she would have put them into vending, sent gold to her mule, and bought the items from her own vend instead of trading them, with prior knowledge that trading would erase the copied items. I also ask you to unban both my main accounts but not for my own personal benefit. Upon the conclusion of this situation, whatever the outcome, I intend on leaving Gaia. No mules. No resurrected main accounts should I be rightfully unbanned. The items in my accounts are Nephilim’s now, should I be unbanned. Both of us did our utmost not to profit from the glitch – I left the vend for the day while the glitches were worked out and Nephilim purged all her glitch items without getting a single Gaian gold from them.

However, though I am leaving, you certainly haven’t won – you can take away my items but you will never take away my pride, my friends, or my love for Nephilim. I used to say that I started with nothing, and would end with nothing except a Halo on my head, mistakenly believing that it was the most valuable thing on the site. After being here half a year, I have since changed my views. Remember friends – Gaia may be about items but the real wealth is not in pixels – it’s in what you get out of it for your real life that counts. And now, even with nothing, I can still say I am still the richest of all for today, as I make my exit from Gaia with nothing but the most valuable thing here – my love for Nephilim.
Mods – Admin – Please do the right thing and unban us. Unban us to restore our items, but even more importantly to recognize that we did not do this intentionally and to restore our unjustly corrupted reputations to their original state. If I am not unbanned, please blame me for everything that transpired - make me the culprit for telling Nephilim about my glitch theory – make me the scapegoat and unban her for she did everything in her power to make things right. She deserves more than this for her year of honest and wonderful service on Gaia and I am willing to sacrifice everything for her. That is my final wish on Gaia. Please unban us, and if you can’t unban me, unban her..

When my trades were locked up during the Grizzly investigation, I started a new character Lindin to vend, and starting with 2 Enchanted Trunks and an Angelic Headband, I worked and worked for weeks until I ended up with 3.2 Million in items and gold. Tell me why I would have any inclination to even want to profit illegally for the money, especially when my moral integrity told me to completely stop vending for the day when I determined the glitch to be a potentially repeatable glitch, which could be done either purposely or by accident.
Instead of exploiting the glitch or doing anything more to jeopardize other Gaians or myself, I logged out and held onto the one copied September and she had held onto her Shirts in wait for announcements, and were promptly banned while others copied items multiple times and sold them to others, exploiting the glitch purposefully intending to profit from it. If we had truly wanted to profit, we would have continued to copy on purpose with the items that we would profit most with - I had Portable Headphones and Grizzly Hat available to me and she had Minis and a Corsage – neither of us copied them. Before leaving for the day I saw clusters of Junes, OMG Hats, Jacked-Shirts, and even a line of at least 10 Hockey Masks in the vend by people who then sold them for cheap to other users. A good deal in vending suddenly became a signal of someone cheating the system using the glitchy copies they had received for exploiting the glitch.
And with so many people doing it on purpose, we were banned for not exploiting it intentionally. That is a fact that I find appalling.
I implore you to unban Nephilim’s account because she didn’t deserve the banning. She did the best she could to rid herself of the glitchy items and did not intentionally exploit the glitch to profit and should not have been banned. She traded her items away to mules with the intent of ridding herself of the items – had she wanted to keep them, she would have put them into vending, sent gold to her mule, and bought the items from her own vend instead of trading them, with prior knowledge that trading would erase the copied items. I also ask you to unban both my main accounts but not for my own personal benefit. Upon the conclusion of this situation, whatever the outcome, I intend on leaving Gaia. No mules. No resurrected main accounts should I be rightfully unbanned. The items in my accounts are Nephilim’s now, should I be unbanned. Both of us did our utmost not to profit from the glitch – I left the vend for the day while the glitches were worked out and Nephilim purged all her glitch items without getting a single Gaian gold from them.

Keep safe and keep a good heads on your shoulders and fight for what you believe is right. Enemies– congratulations… your Gaia goal of making me leave has finally been accomplished, even if it wasn’t by your hand but at the hands of the Admin and Mods, and the unfortunate Copy Glitch I ran into. However, though I am leaving, you certainly haven’t won – you can take away my items but you will never take away my pride, my friends, or my love for Nephilim. I used to say that I started with nothing, and would end with nothing except a Halo on my head, mistakenly believing that it was the most valuable thing on the site. After being here half a year, I have since changed my views. Remember friends – Gaia may be about items but the real wealth is not in pixels – it’s in what you get out of it for your real life that counts. And now, even with nothing, I can still say I am still the richest of all for today, as I make my exit from Gaia with nothing but the most valuable thing here – my love for Nephilim.
Mods – Admin – Please do the right thing and unban us. Unban us to restore our items, but even more importantly to recognize that we did not do this intentionally and to restore our unjustly corrupted reputations to their original state. If I am not unbanned, please blame me for everything that transpired - make me the culprit for telling Nephilim about my glitch theory – make me the scapegoat and unban her for she did everything in her power to make things right. She deserves more than this for her year of honest and wonderful service on Gaia and I am willing to sacrifice everything for her. That is my final wish on Gaia. Please unban us, and if you can’t unban me, unban her..
