Hello Gaia, and welcome to my latest bit.
As you may tell from my signature and previous posts, I do often have something to say during the course of a decent gender vs gender debate.
Who is better? Men or Women?
In short, it's a stupid question. What are the factors that determine "better"? Men are physically stronger but women bear children. Men navagate by direction, women by land marks.
There's just all sorts of differences that can't be quantified. So I will try and end the debate right now.
There is no debate.
Asking who's better, Man or Woman; is like asking which is better: A Walnut tree or a Maple Tree?
You just can't compare the two, they're too different and they have their own uses, strengths, and weaknesses.
I would like to geek out for a moment, if I may, and compare Gender to an MMORPG (Mass Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game for those not into the geekdom)
I've not joined the Internet Sensation World of Warcraft, so I'll go with the MMO I do know: City of Heroes. The archetypes break down thusly.
Tanker: High hit points, low damage dealing, limited range. Comes in different varieties. Mostly used as a distraction to take as much damage for the rest of the team as possible. Basicly the "human" shield.
Blaster: High damage dealer, low hit points, long range. The main powerhouse, a good blaster sits back and kicks the crap out of the bad guy(s) at a distance.
Controller: Potentially incredible damage, very low hit points, variable range. Controllers are mainly for buffs/debuffs but they have powers with such a wide area of attack they can be attacking half a dozen foes and seriously sapping life or endurance and keeping enemies immoblized for the heavier hitters. Also can double for healer.
Defender: Low damage dealing, medium hit points, variable range Primarily healers, they are in the middle of the group of heroes trying to keep everyone alive while they take damage. They are also buffers/debuffers. Some can deal damage but it's not their primary ability.
Scrapper: High damage dealing, medium hit points, variable range. Normally melee combatants with the ability of Critical Strike which can knock an enemy's HP way the hell down. With decent hit points themselves they're pretty good at soloing.
I'll leave out the other two cause they're kinda redundant.
So we have these five basic types of characters. Now which is the best? Due to the style of gameplay after a while most worthwhile missions require you to form a team of 2-8 people. Certain types can Solo, but it's not very fun and not often reccomended. So, theoretically, you can just have a group of 8 blasters and dominate, right? It's possible, but given their low hit points, if you come across a mob that charges you, or someone can't control the "aggro" you have a mess on your hands and everybody dies. Sometimes Blasters like to think they're tanks and they charge in head first and accidentally draw 10 enemies on them and die immediatly. Then they tend to b***h at the healer for not healing them immediatly cause they were being stupid.
Defenders can't do too much on their own, but they're constant lifesavers and an invaluable asset to the team.
Scrappers can sometimes double for tanks if they're not available, but they don't have the resistance that most tanks have. They do good damage, but not enough to rule out a blaster niether are they capable of holding the interest of an attacking mob the way a tank does.
Tanks have ridiculously high hit points, but they deal about enough damage to piss off the enemy enough that they focus the entire mob's effort on the tank. But tankers die pretty quick without healers and they just don't do nearly the damage that Scrappers or Blasters do.
Controllers have outrageously low hitpoints but as mentioned earlier, if they have a good build they will make destroying enemies effortless. Plus, if your primary healer is overwhelmed they can aid those who desperatly need it if they have that power set. A controller that tries to be a tanker is just an idiot who should have learned better at level 4.
So, knowing all this, who's the best?
The answer: It's a matter of preferance. You WANT all of them to come together and do their job so your team is successful because they are a TEAM DOING SEPARATE JOBS. When you build your Blaster character you build him/her knowing that you are resigning yourself to staying physically farther from the action and taking out enemies while staying out of danger for the most part. When you sign on as a Defender you know you're not getting all the glory of a Tank or Blaster, but you're performing an essential service to the group and they all love you for it. Whether or not you get all the glory, you ARE an EXTREMELY important member of the team. I personally hate Scrappers, but when you get down to it every single one of them has their use and at the end of the day they're all Heroes.
So what I'm saying is even if men can lift a couch over their head they still need a woman to help him bear his children and raise them. And even though the woman wields the power of creating life in her womb sometimes she needs help opening that damned pickle jar.
Men and women both have their strengths and their weaknesses, but like Heroes, when you get right down to it we all have the same goal, we just play different roles.
*Edit*
Changed the topic name to a homonym for my amusement.
