What is family? One would say it is a group of people who are related by blood, who therefore see life as something to be shared together for eternity.

Still others say that it is more than that. The group can extend, it can gather others like the branches of a tree gather life. It can make itself into something stronger by letting those branches flourish.

Both answers could be true, but then again, both can be false.

Fridged had a large family. Or at least she had been told that she did. She had met her mother, known her father a short time. Disdained her siblings, with perhaps the exception of Shiver, her skittish brother who liked running off more than knowing others.

Still in her mind she was sure the family would be close.. or at least it seemed to be. Then she saw.. for the first time in her life, her own father, down from his mountains. It would have taken something major to cause that.

Major.. like a break up.. a shatter in the pristine ice surface of her family. One she didn't know. One she wasn't sure she wanted to know now. So she wandered. Like her brother before her, she wandered, to find truth, and peace of mind.

Chikotae wandered along silently, his thoughts as always swirling about in his head as he thought about his past, how he grew up...his mother. He was too young to remember what she looked like, but he knew he hated her. He hated her for leaving him to die, alone in this cold world. Bitterness encased his heart and the only true emotions he felt other then that was the love he had for his adopted parents, Aruna and Delano. They had found him and saved him, taking him into their home and nourishing him. A slight smile crept onto his face as he thought about them. He visited at least every few days. To them he owed his life and in his heart they were his only true family.

He found himself wandering closer to the mountain base. He had heard there were soquilis of ice and snow that lived in the mountains. A part of him was curious but for the most part he avoided contact with others. Whenever he was around others he was often sarcastic and even mean, taking enjoyment in putting them down and making fun. Little known to anyone else, he did this because he feared letting anyone close. He feared secretly if he let in someone he could grow to love, they would leave him, abandon him like his own mother did. He didn't need anyone and he much preferred it that way.

Fridged kept moving slowly, away from the cold that she called home part of the time and back into the warmth she called home the other part. The ones she passed on the way she walked past with little more than a sarcastic bitter series of glances.

It wasn't hatred, it wasn't envy, it was distance. She felt love for her brother, she felt some for small innocent children, but other than that she wasn't sure what she felt. All deserved some care, but she kept it on a practical level.

"Stay away and you don't get hurt. Stay too far away and you get hurt more later." The lesson was a good one, and one she was teaching herself. So.. when she stumbled upon the stallion heading to the mountain as she was leaving it, she put it into practice.

"Its cold there.. you don't look like you would last long.." Practical advice given fast and painless. Job done.

Anxious Lunatic

Chikotae was moving along at a good pace and ignoring all others he saw, but stopped dead in his tracks when a blue icy female spoke to him. He frowned at this mare, who herself didn't appear too happy. "Awww poor little blue mare. Is it too cold for you up there? " He snorted and stomped the ground as he stood, awaiting her response. His expression was one of slight annoyance that she had made such a remark to him.

The mountains made sense to him. Where else could he go to avoid contact with others? It was great for isolation. Hell he could stand the cold. It was better then the happy, cheery faces he saw all day long. Such foolish happiness made him want to be sick. He shrugged slightly and went to turn and be on his way with a remark of his own to leave her with, "Perhaps such a weak little mare needs a big, strong stallion to keep her warm up there or if she is smart she'll keep her a** down here where its warm." He tossed his mane and smirked at the wind mare.

Fridged laughed and shook her head. "No big stupid stallion.. I was bred in the mountains but I am sure your pea brain missed the fact that I am marked for mountain living." She rolled her eyes and shook her head. At this rate she would be best of swearing off her speicies and living with the rabbits. They were silent and though kind of dumb it was innocent stupidity not just being a jerk.

"Go.. freeze your a** off but don't say I didn't warn you.. and say Hi to my father Kinguyakkii I am sure he will love to kick your a** back down when it freezes."

Anxious Lunatic

Chikotae stopped as he was about to continue on and turned his head back towards the icy looking mare. "Oh I didn't miss it, but it seems to me you were commenting to a stallion you know nothing of. Are you that insecure you need to look to strangers and make remarks towards them? " He turned around fully now to face her, flexing his red and white wings, his blue runic markings on his forelegs sparkling in the sun.

"ohhh I tremble and my hooves quake with fear." He mocked her giving a mock fear expression before smirking at her once more. He swished his long white tail back and forth as his mane flowed lightly about his chest as the wind blew softly. His dark eyes fixed upon her as he challenged her to oppose him. "Stupid little mare. Same as the rest of this wretched species, always abandoning things and leaving the ones they love alone out in the cold. You are no different from my mother, a heartless mare who cares for no one but herself. Such a waste of life really" He snorted at her and just stood watching and waiting. It was no surprise she seemed no different from the rest. The only real difference he noticed was her comments.

Frigid scoffed and rolled her eyes. "Here I was trying to give you a fair warning of what is up there and you get all rude. Of course I will right back!" She stamped a hoof as anger bubbled in her. "How dare you call me one to abandon others! I did not. They left me! Father being so stupid to not realize that family needs him. Mom being.. where ever the heck she was! I only had Shiver....." She stopped turning away.

"Gah! What the hell do you care!" She looked off into the distance. "What does anyone care. Family is a dream.. or a nightmare.. something that hovers off in the distance like a mirrage. I plan to at least see what others make of it."

Anxious Lunatic

Chikotae watched the wind female's temper flare and he stood there grinning menacingly at her, his dark eyes glinting with glee. He was enjoying every moment of this now, perhaps more then he should. But then how often did he really partake in tormenting or frustrating others? It had been a while. "Temper temper my dear little icy mare. Be careful or your heated blood might melt your fragile little body."

He laughed to himself, not loudly but not softly either. He took a few steps closer, surveying the angery blue mare, her eyes blazing with an icy cold look. Such a contradiction really. such fire for a cold creature such as herself. "Oh a warning you call it? I perceived it as instigating an argument, why insulting my ability to survive in the moutains and all. But then what else should i expect from such a cold hearted mare as yourself? You probably know nothing but how to be cold, emotionless, a mask hiding from the world and all those in it." Much like himself really. Was he really describing her as he saw her, or was he sort of looking at himself?

"Oh? hit a sore spot did I? You know nothing if abandonment like I do..." His dark eyes flared and gleamed with their hint of crimson, bitterness and resentment shining clearly in them. Abandonment was not a subject he took lightly. "At least they were there, even if for a short time. You were not left to die like I was... no food, no protection...nothing. Waiting for the predators to find you for their next meal, or die of starvation. Whichever came first.." He stomped a hoof and flexed his wings, his voice growing very angry as he seemed to relive the memories. " I never knew my mother or father or siblings. Nor do I want to. They can all die horrible, slow painful deaths for all I care. A nightmare you call it? At least we agree on something."

He listened at her last words and shook his head. "Foolish mare." He hissed his words softly at her now, every word still dripping with the bitter hatred he felt. " Why let others into your heart so they can only leave and abandon you? Such a notion is beyond my comprehension. One does not need anyone but themself." He turned to look at the mountains, longing for their isolation, their protection from the pain he also felt. His gaze was fixed on the highest peaks. "I do not wish to seek out others love to only feel pain when they leave. " He whispered softly, this last comment. A part of him wanted nothing more then to be needed and lvoed, but a larger part of himself pushed that inside and would not let it out. He did not need anyone. He could trust no one to be there and never leave him.

Would that I could follow the words he said. Oh for the feeling of isolation and the need to be alone always, but that is one thing that never locked within me. Like others I foolishly flounder around, seeking one to call a family. He speakd of true abandoment, but what he knows and remembers is primarily what came out when security set in. That is not truely alone and lost, that is having found something new. "It hurts more to have once had.. and lost, than to have lost and finally gained." She spoke softly as she too turned away.

A brief respite from lonliness, a teaser leading her to new feelings of seeking and wondering. "Enjoy your time up there.. enjoy what you find and my hopes to you that it is what you truely seek." She spoke the last softly, her head lowered as she wondered now where she would go.

She had a large family, but was not willing to be part of it at the moment. Sisters, brothers.. but none that called. Shiver was out there somewhere, likely sad and alone, not knowing how to push that away. He was more gentle than she ever was. HE needed and wanted the love but didn't know where to find it. Was that were she should go, or should she follow the stallion?

Anxious Lunatic

Chikotae just stared at the icy mare. She baffled him. How could she experience the pain in loss and still seek to find love? "So you would seek out love, to seek it out and risk being hurt once more? Why? Whatever reason could drive you to such madness?" He shook his head. She had to be insane, perhaps she had lost it, or maybe she knew somehing he didn't and perhaps thats what peaked his interest.

"What would you know of what I seek? I seek nothing but to prevent being hurt any more. I seek isolation alone because I know if I let myself feel love or any kind of emotions, I will only be left and hurt again. Tell me why I should risk that? Why I should lay my heart out only to be trampled over? My parents did it once to me and I have seen it happen between lovers. " He turned around now to face her. "Its not that I don't want someone to love me...I just don't want to have someone say they do and then break my heart which would only bring me back here."

He sighed deeply as she seemed to unlock with ease the very fears he had pushed away and tried to hide. He only had his adopted parents, whom he loved, but all in all, he had no one else to share his life with. Oh how he longed for it but he pushed that away too for the fear of experiencing a broken heart as he had told her.

She looked at him with a slight curl to her mouth. "I seek it because I guess I am a sucker for punishment. Madness is what created me, I guess it is fairly instinctual for me to seek more."

The words of the stallion made her tip her head to the side in curiosity. "What makes you think being alone is any better than being with others. Granted it is more peaceful, less chance to fight, but also less chance to grow. I understand that you would not want to take the chance that you will be hurt, but if you don't, what if that is what hurts you in the end?"

She made a shrugging motion. "I am not trying to change your mind, only open it to new thoughts. It is all that I am able to do."
