Welcome to Gaia! ::

A "what if?"-situation

As most of us know, the Battle System is well underway! However, we don't have much information on what the game will be all about, all we know is what they told us last year. We wouldn't want to fill our sticky with discussion about this, so we figured we would go ahead to make a new thread to specifically discuss the following:
Every Massive Multiplayer Online game in existence has its flaws, from Ragnarok Online to World of Warcraft to EVE. Naturally, Gaia's game will have its flaws as well and they will probably be rather annoying. In this thread, we want to discuss what sort of mistakes will probably be made and, more importantly, how you would go ahead to fix these.

To streamline this discussion, we request you to read the information on the frontpage of the BST and go by the situation sketched in there. On top of that, we will assume some other things:
  • It will be in Real Time.
  • It will be in-browser.
  • The first version will not contain Player vs Player combat.
  • The first version will not be linked to the Gaia Guild Network.
  • There will be no interaction with the environment other than what we have already seen in Gaia Towns.

Please remain civil, on-topic and constructive, we will report any posts that fail to comply these basic points.
What I would dislike A LOT is having the swirly leg walking animation... nothing ruins a warrior avi like that...

I also worry that our avi's won't have much motion in the battle system, kinda just move a few inches and have a little special effect.

So these two are graphical worries for me...

The first major issue that I forsee is compatiblity. Currently, quite a few people have trouble running the flash based games, or seeing the entire window if they have reduced resolution. It would be odd if certain quests or aspects of the site were dependant on the battle system, yet users were unable to load it at all. Though it has to be browser based, it would be best to first poll the site to see what works best with people. For example, if more users can use shockwave (houses) than flash (towns), then make it a shockwave based system. Or perhaps a java applet?

The second major issue I see is traffic. Users often have trouble entering towns, or avatars get blacked out when an area is too crowded. I address this in my next point:

The third issue I predict is with the current rooms system. Both games like jigsaw and fishing have a certain configuration for rooms or areas, and neither one of them is very efficient. The problem with towns areas is that they get flooded and people have to quit. I suggest that the battle system play in rooms, like diablo or Gunz, where it's limited to a party of ten or so people, as opposed to mass chaos. This leads to another major problem: Balance. Newbies and experienced players won't want to be stuck in a room together. While it works with jigsaw, it won't work with the BS. So there needs to be an option to restrict entry to a room. Perhaps by level, owned rings, etc.

The forth issue I predict is limited gameplay. I'm afraid that once users complete the battle system, they'll leave the site. For this reason, I suggest that the admins start with a worse-than-average curving system, where the more you play, the harder it gets. This will prevent anyone from exhausting the system too fast.

I also forsee a problem with kill stealing and looting, if a system is not designed to prevent it.

Burning Crimson, oh god, I can already imagine my fierce assassin swirling to his unsuspecting victim! Yeah, the solution is simple, make some decent leg-moving visuals.

Constructive feedback, please. gonk How would you fix these problems?

Lag is something that all MMORPG's have problems with and usualy its not something the admins can fix. Like WoW. I played it on a desktop and a laptop and the laptop laged because the laptop realy couldn't handle it. Its more a user side problem rather then a server side problem.

Personaly I think the battle system might be like Maple Story (please dont stone me. I know its a bad ref but its the only one I got ^^; ) only more 3 dementional. If they made it a downloadable thing like that it wouldn't have the problems that browser games have and it would be easyer for the q and a to help with the problems if they dont have to ask "what browser are you using to play?"

(this next part is unrelyable. I have not seen first hand it is all hearsay sweatdrop ) I've also been told a downloadable version is easyer on servers as well. I'm not entirely sure how but I think it has to do with the pinging back and forth between the servers, the browser company (this is mostly a problem with IE and AOL), and the user.

Would the game still be an MMO, then?

Although they wouldn't be missed by the community, it would of course mean less money for Gaia, which is a bad thing. However, we must keep into account that the game must also be fun to play and as we know from almost every RPG in existence, half the fun is getting better, the other half is exciting gameplay. I doubt we can expect much on this field.

That's bull, I've played WoW with 1sec lag on a system twice the recommended specifications. The problem was with Blizzard having lousy servers that couldn't handle the amount of people playing.

It's easier on servers because you don't have to download a lot, you'll only be uploading information. However, that's besides the point of this thread.
heart lolz..so true
along with the battle system's release there will be problems but when they fix it will it all have to go down or just certain parts?

1) Why does this matter?
2) No one knows.

I see a lot of confushion and little patience when the BS comes out. I sugest we have a searies of stickys to handle these questions as well as informitive annocments.
"How do I play?"
"Why can't we _______?"
"How do I get to it?"
"Battle Sysetm doesn't work."
"Which Wepons do I buy?"
"Why don't my items change stats?"
"WHy can't I get on?"
While the application flaws have already been brought up, I am expecting a whole other set of problems given Gaia's quick/poor coding for first gen anything. (Cause we gotta throw it out there as fast as possible without test it, right?)

First, monster spawn rate. I believe some fields and areas will be horribly filled with an endless sea of monsters, while others will have almost none. And with that, some areas might become well known for kill one, one spawn instantly, while other areas will become infamous for kill one and wait an hour if your lucky. When the BS is released, I think this imbalance will be the first of many problems.

Next, avitars in general. Either they won't load properly, like when word bump was first released, or they won't load at all. Then there will be the interactive aspect. I think some users will come across glitches that will either have it so they can't kill a monster but it can kill them, or the other way around, which would be nice for that person, but unfair to everyone else.

Then of course there will be the item drops. "Look mom, I killed a slime and it dropped three rares. Oh wait, the admins took them away. Hmmm sounds like Daily Chance all over again."

And last will be my favorite. Because PvP is only a few key stokes away from normal game play, I think the admins will accidentally not code things properly, and this will lead to a massive amount of Player Killing (PKing). Trust me, if they aren't careful, it will happen.

Overall, I am not very optimistic about the BS. Why? Given Gaia's past with coding and not testing completely before release, I am predicting that major coding flaws will bring down the BS faster than you can say Gambino. It's not to say they won't be fixed, but Gaia is also very slow at fixing problems and then letting the community know when something is fixed. I mean, look at the Ink Mixing system, still down. I am hoping for the best, but with Gaia, I am always expecting the worst.

Towns were tested pretty thoroughly, ne?
