*The following is a 'ficticious' account of the real life of William Roivas. There is no need to create your own characters. Be your real-life self. You decide where this 'story' ends up depending on which actions you take, and how you help William in his quest.*

Hi everyone. My name is Will Roivas, and I'm a college student at the Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusettes. Arkham is a little known place that's part of the Essex County in Massachusettes.

I know I probably shouldn't be giving out so much information, but I need to know if anyone out there would be willing to help me.

I'm sure some of you may think I'm crazy, but I have no where's else to turn. Strange things have been going on at the university. I was recently rummaging through some of the old archeological files for a research paper I'm doing, when I came across this strange statue. I can't exactly describe what I saw, but touching the statue caused me to feel slightly dizzy. I can almost swear that the eyes on that thing flashed red for a moment.

This statue was packaged in a crate back in the corner of the room. The crate was filled with strange bottles of what looked like some type of herbs, and strange pieces of paper that I couldn't really understand. It must be the language of whatever tribe created the statue.

Since then, I haven't been able to sleep. I've been seeing strange landscapes...landscapes that are beyond human understanding...and I can hear the most horrifying howling of some unknown beast in the depths of that landscapes darkness...

Those eyes still haunt me too...

Night after night, I wake up in a cold sweat...usually around 2:16 a.m.

I'm going to go back and get that statue. Maybe if I prove to myself that it's just a normal artifact like all the others, then I'll be able to get some rest. However, I am curious to know what those pieces of parchment I found with the statue have to say about the crate's contents, and I may need as much help as I can get to decode some of those documents. That language is something I have never seen in any of my classes. Once I get it, I'll upload some of those pictures so you can see it and help me decode it.

So, if you don't think me mad, I beg you to help me in this quest. My mind can't take much more of this.

Sorry for being so brief, but I have plenty of tests to study for tomorrow, and I have little time to rest.

Thanks

Bad news guys. I went back for the crate today, and it wasn't there.

I don't get it...when I found the thing, it was pretty dusty and looked like it hadn't been touched in years. Why would anyone all of a sudden want it for? Was it just another dream? No...I know I'm not that crazy...yet. Someone must have taken it, but I can't figure out who or why they would take it. Hmm...I'll check again tomorrow.

As for last night, the dreams didn't get any better. Sometimes, it almost feels like I'm drowning. Urgh...I'm so frustrated! I know if I could just understand what I saw that day, everything would be all better.

Well, if I can't show the statue to you, maybe I can describe it. Ok, it looked like a humanoid figure sitting cross-legged and it was holding something. It was holding what looked like an armadillo, and the armadillo's back was strangely gridded. And some squares had a gold covering on them--almost like a checkerboard pattern. I know this may sound weird, but it sort of looked like a corn cob. Any ideas as to what that could mean?

And on top of the humanoid figure's head was what looked like a snake with the head of a hippopotamus. And I can't remember if this snake thing had wings or not....

I really hope I find this statue again and get to take a picture of it. It is the only way I can prove to you, and myself, that I am not crazy.

Any suggestions would be greatly apprecaited. Sorry for placing the burden of all this research on you, too, but I have way too many other things to do like study for exams.

Arkham has a rich history of 'unexplained' happenings. Everyone says it's just urban legend, but I have a feeling that there is some truth to those tales used to frighten freshmen from their pleasant dreams at night. After all, I am open to the idea that this could be some elaborate senior prank, but it just seems too complex for a simple explanation like that.

So if there are any suggestions, or if you find any meaning to the objects on the statue, please let me know A.S.A.P.

Thanks
Dear Will,

I came across your correspondence this evening and I was at first perplexed, then rightly shaken by your experience with the said statue. I myself have come across a similar form in a locality quite close to Arkham.

Roughly 15 miles down the coast from Kingsport there lies a detestable track of wilderness known to the locals as the Dravidian Forest. Located on its coastal boarder to the east, one is chanced to come upon an aging seaport known by the name of St. Gabriel. I myself spent a summer in and around its environs;
While making a tour of the east coast before my entrance into university.

My main purpose for visiting a place so far off of normally traveled routes was that of genealogical data. Apparently my great-grandfather had grown up in St. Gabriel, before the family moved westward and settled in our ancestral seat in Michigan. It was while I was researching, I came into contact with a man who had lived in the town since the times of my great-grandfather; he being quite old and demented when I met his acquaintance. Though my staunch upbringing has taught me that even from the mouth of madness may one gleam a bit of the truth. And so it was that I embarked to rifle the mind of my aged friend.

It was on a night in the later part of July that he invited me into his study to show me a book which he had spent his life studying. One of his proud ancestors had been among those archeologists who had ransacked the great tombs of kings in the early part of this century. Of what I remember of the worn pages I was shown, I can remember shape roughly like you have described to me.

I shall attempt to contact my friend, in hopes that I may procure the volume from him for closer study. I hope I can be of some assistance in the future.

Sincerely Yours,

Robert Garehn
