"Oh, this is stupid - you can't be serious," Crispin said, nervous.

She'll love it. Come on! Shaiming prodded his host along the hall towards the front door. Just because you're afraid to use the portal doesn't mean you shouldn't. A bit of fresh air from your own world will do you BOTH good.

"But what if it closes behind us and we can't get back?" Crispin protested as he stumbled. The dragon had gained just enough control that he could make his host move forward, in a deeply awkward and unstable fashion that was less like walking than a series of barely-controlled falls.

It won't, Shaiming said, firmly. According to Toki, the portal's been there and stable for twenty years.

"Nice of him to only tell us about it NOW," Crispin muttered. "I wonder where it goes?"

A major city where they speak the same language you do, Shaiming said with a mental shrug. So... get... GOING!

"Ooof!" Crispin tripped over the edge of the rug and only managed to avoid faceplanting by windmilling his arms until he got his balance back. "Okay, okay! Sheesh, I'd think YOU were the God of Love, not this Rio person."

I have had a lover in my time. I know what it takes, Shaiming said, simply.

With a sigh, Crispin straightened his clothes and headed in to the Aoidei quarters, then knocked on Morgan's door. "Hello? You in, love?"

Beloved Shapeshifter

"Of course I am. Where else would I be..." Morgan had been straightening up her desk when she heard footsteps in the hall, and had merely peeked out to investigate. She grinned at him. "...darling?" She added at the end and leaned out to give him a peck on the lips.

"Here just for a visit, or something else?" She pushed the door open so he could slip past her, as she was leaning against the inside of the door frame.

She had somehow managed to get her to stay up in some semblance of a bun with a pair of hairsticks she found buried in her backpack, and was dressed in a black shirt, the one he'd first seen her in in fact and jeans.

"Something else." Crispin grinned when he saw her; maybe this was the right choice after all. He returned the peck happily. "Darling? That's a new one. Listen, it seems a certain flop-eared Aoide of mine has found a new portal for us to go through... and I was wondering... would you go out with me?"

He paused, added, "Smookywookums," then brought his arms up to defend himself if need be.

Beloved Shapeshifter

Morgan gave him a playful swat. "Silly boy, depends where it goes to." She laughed and pushed her glasses up on her nose, resting one foot against the door frame. "I'll have to think of a pet name for you, I haven't found a suitable one yet." She smiled playfully.

"Ack! Okay, I give, just don't make the nickname something horrible... and I'll be good," Crispin pleaded, then laughed.

"I'm sure I can help you come up with something," Shaiming put in, jovially. "Good afternoon, Morgan." The dragon was in unmistakable good spirits now.

"No," Crispin groaned, shaking his head. "And... um. The portal, according to Toki, goes to Earth... a big city where they speak English. So... the US, Canada, the UK, Australia maybe... where were you from, anyway? I lived in podunk New England..."

Beloved Shapeshifter

"Hello Shaiming." Morgan giggled and her eyes widened a bit when he said 'Earth'. "Really...then of course I'd like to go." She put a hand on her hip.

"Took you long enough to ask that..." Then again, she hadn't asked him either, though she'd wondered about it. "Born in Georgia, lived there most of my life, then my family moved up north." He would hear traces of a southern accent on some words, but mostly it had faded from her voice now.

"Huh. So close, yet so far... good thing for us there was magic, huh?" Crispin winked at her, then sighed. "Well, do you want to go and see? I hope it goes somewhere in America, because I don't have money for any other country, but I guess I'll manage if it doesn't. Find an exchange bureau or something."

Beloved Shapeshifter

"Mhm...just a minute, though." Morgan disapeared into her room, to pull on her shoes, collect a couple of things and take her hair down to run a brush through it quickly.

She tossed the hairbrush on her bed and worked on putting her hair back up as she walked back to the door. "Now I'm good to go. Do I look alright?" She asked him, mostly just teasing, since it was a date of sorts.

"Stunning! Rapturous! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Morgan is the sun..." Crispin struck a mock-dramatic pose, then laughed. "You look beautiful as always. Toki says the portal is about half an hour's walk away, unfortunately... is there anything you might want to bring because of that? Got comfortable shoes?"

Beloved Shapeshifter

Morgan laughed too. "So silly and sweet, but I love you that way." She grinned. "Comfortable shoes are all I own, hon, anything with a heel over an inch or so and I'd probably break my ankles."

She giggled again, then double checked to make sure she'd grabbed everything. MP3 player, wallet, keys (out of habit). Yep that was everything. "I'm good to go."

"Alrighty, let's go - adventure time, I guess. Here's hoping it's somewhere fascinating!" Crispin grinned and held the room door open for her, then called for Toki.

The Aoide appeared at once, looking cheerful, and immediately executed a perfect court bow. "Good afternoon, Master Crispin, Lady Morgan - you are ready to head for the portal, then?"

"Yep. Lead on," Crispin said, then added, "but do it at a speed we can keep up with."

"Understood. If sir and lady would follow me..." Toki flapped his wings enough to get hovering, then flitted down the hall and the stairs.

Beloved Shapeshifter

Morgan smiled and waved to the Aoide when he appeared. "Hey Toki." She slipped past Crispin, "I hope so too." Hopefully we'll be able to see the stars, once it gets dark. She added to herself; she missed seeing them and that would give Shaiming some more to be cheerful about, to know his friends had not disapeared entirely.

"I still haven't gotten used to being called 'Lady', though." She grumbled, shaking her head; she'd tried several times to get the Aoide to just use her name, but it hadn't panned out.

((timejumping becuase who the hell wants to RP walking for half an hour razz ))

Toki led them out of the shop and away; the surroundings of the shops remained as oppressive as ever, and the Aoide had to be called to slow down several times. But, after the promised half-hour walk, Toki pointed out a house that was mostly standing. "There. It's in there. It used to be some kind of travel agency, I think?"

The dust-covered sign swaying in front confirmed that, and Crispin pushed the door open with care. Sure enough, there was the swirling shape of a portal in the back room. There were no other footsteps in the dust except for one set leading to the portal and out again; Toki's, he assumed. Another sign near the portal identified the destination as Earth and that it was a two-way installation, but the lower half of the sign with the specific destination was missing.

He took a deep breath. "Well, this looks like the place. Shall we go see?"

Beloved Shapeshifter

"Heck yeah." Morgan giggled. "Definately an adventure. I'm just glad I'm not alone." She smiled, gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and took his hand. "Lets go."

The prospect of an adventure had definately brightened Morgan's mood, even if it was just going home in a way. The mystery of not knowing where they'd end up made her a bit nervous.

She squeezed Crispin's hand gently. "Knights first, darling." She teased, hoping to mask the touch of uneasiness in her voice.

((*randomly decides where it is* I picked somewhere I'm kidna familiar with so I could set the stage, somewhere small and pleasant. Hokay.))

"Okay. I'll poke back through to let you know it's safe for sure," Crispin said.

"And I will make sure no harm comes to him. I can do that, at the very least; a sorry Dragon King I would be if I could not even protect my host," Shaiming added, trying to be reassuring.

Crispin made a face. "Okay. Here goes." He stepped towards the swirling portal, took a deep breath, and walked through. There was a moment of disorentation, then a jolt as the portal spit him out on the other side, a good foot above the sidewalk.

"Oof!" Crispin stumbled, then straightened up and looked around. Everything seemed fine... the air was crisp, and he could see his breath. The portal was in an alleyway, behind a pile of discarded boxes and a few dumpsters. Cautiously, he made his way towards the street. A few cars went by, perfectly normal.

The landscape that greeted him was not one that he was familiar with, but neither was it fantasy - no, this was the real Earth, he was sure of it. Normal humans walked around. He was behind a strip mall, he realized, next to a large grocery store. An American flag was flying at a fast-food restaurant across the street. Behind the shopping area, hills covered with dark scrub and the remains of snow rose up, dotted with unusual, boxy houses.

"Adobe?" Crispin murmured, then waved down a passing shopper. "Excuse me!"

"Huh?" the woman said, looking surprised, taking a step back.

"Sorry, but... I just got into town, my buddy was driving and he's sleeping in the car now. What town is this?" Crispin tried to make his explanation as real as possible. Heaven knew he'd had several road trips in the past that had been conducted in driving shifts, sleeping in the car most of the way to save money.

"Oh. Santa Fe," the woman replied, with a shrug, and moved on.

"Huh. New Mexico. That's kind of an odd place for a portal to go..."

Shaiming was following his every move, with great interest. This is where you're from?

"Not this state, but yes... this is my country. My world." Crispin heaved a sigh of relief that nothing here looked too bad, and took a deep breath of ash-free air. "Let's go get Morgan."

He returned to the portal quickly and hopped through again, ending up on the other side with only a little disorientation. "It goes to America!" he announced, proudly. "To Santa Fe, New Mexico, actually. I've never been there. How's that?"
