Topic up for discussion for 11/20/04: What do you think about the current state of A/M/C? What do you think could be done to improve it?

Morbid's Thread on A/M/C Etiquette</center>
Hello. I'm Morbid Gnome. I've been a regular in A/M/C for over 4 months(I've been on Gaia for almost 5 months). Because of this, I've come to realize that there are some common problems that arise. Today, I'm here to try and help people new to A/M/C learn what to do, and what not to do.
This post is kinda long, but at the very least, read the basics. If you wish to read more in-depth explanation on a topic, read the sections listed under "Extras".
<center>Basics</center>
Try to type properly. This means caps, punctuation, and proper grammar. If we can't understand you, we can't possibly have a discussion with you.See Typing Skills
Please, Please PLEASE read the thread you are replying to. Read at least the first and last page. There might be important information you'll miss if you don't read. See Posting Dos and Don'ts
Spam and excessive bumping belong in the Chatterbox. Please do not do either activity while in A/M/C. See Bumping Threads in A/M/C
Make sure you use the right subforum before making a thread. Also, check several pages back in the forum. If you see a thread on a topic you want to make, post there. There's no need to repeat threads. See Thread Making and Placement
If you place your thread in the wrong forum by mistake, PM an online moderator. Just include a link to your thread in the PM, and ask the mod to move it. See How to Get a Thread Moved
Many rules that are covered in the TOS and Rules & Guidelines are broken. Please read these two important things, the links are at the very bottom of the page.

Typing Skills
Gaia isn't an essay contest. Gaia isn't a chatroom. Gaia is a discussion board. It's hard to have a discussion if people can't read what you're posting. We encourage proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.
~Please do NOT post in l33t, chat speak (LOL, u, ur, ppl, etc.), or ThIS ScrEWed Up ThiNG THaT PeoPlE Do.
~Please do NOT abbreviate Japanese as Jap. Jap is a racial slur that many people take offensively.
~Please take the time to type out the words. Ppl, ur, btw, etc. are annoying. If you are putting out the effort to post, you can put out the effort to type properly. Are the two or three extra keys really that hard?
~Emoticon abuse is NOT cool. stare doesn't always make you look smart, and crying doesn't cause the forum members to feel your gut-wrenching pain.
~Please use a spell check. If you know that you are bad at spelling, open up a word processor. Type what you want to say, check it, then copy and paste.
Note: For people that do not have spell check: http://www.iespell.com/download.php You simply right click on the text window before you hit reply. Poof! Spell checked.
NOTE: I understand that some people grew up speaking a language other than English. These people have a reason for making mistakes. It's the sixteen-year-olds who have spoken English all their life that have no excuse.
Posting Dos and Don'ts
Always, ALWAYS, read the first post of a thread you are about to reply to. Then, read the thread (if it is 4 pages or less). If the the thread is more than 4 pages, read the first 2-3 pages, and the last 2-3 pages. What you are about to say may have been addressed already. There's no need for redundancy.
If the thread is asking a question, please don't give a 1-5 word sentence for an answer. You should give supporting reasons.
There's a problem I see happening in the "Can you help me identify...? or Can you tell me when/where I can find..." type of threads. If you don't know an answer to a thread, don't post 'I don't know'. That does nothing to aid the discussion.
If there is a versus thread, do not vote if you do not know both characters involved. You will get flamed if you say: "Well, I don't know anything about Character A but, Character B would win because he's cool, and no one can beat him." You can't make a decision unless you are educated about both sides involved.
Bumping threads in A/M/C
What some people don't understand is when you should bump a thread. There are only two times that a thread needs to be bumped: 1) When the thread is the last or next to last thread on the first page or 2) When the thread is not on the first page. That's it! There's no reason to bump a thread if it's the 10th one on the page.
There are also people that don't understand the difference between a bump and spamming. Posting "Bump" is a bump. Posting the word "Bump" 500 times in one post is spam. When you bump a thread, all you need to do is type "Bump" Type it once, not 7000 times.
Thread making and placement
Before you make a thread, please look 5 pages back in the forum. If you find a the topic that you want to make, please post there. If not, create the thread.
The mods of A/M/C work very hard trying to keep the forum clean. Mods spend a lot of their time moving threads of overdone topics. Some of these topics are:
~Hentai
~Sub vs. Dub
~Wanna-be Anime
~Do you like Shounen/Shoujo-ai?
~Do you like Yaoi/Yuri?
~Dubs suck
~Do you like anime? -- Considering you're in a forum for anime, the answer is usually going to be yes.
~What do you think of anime haters?
~What anime character would you be?
~Has anyone heard of <insert anime here>? -- If you're asking about an anime shown on TV, the answer is yes. Many people have heard of it. The answer is almost always yes, no matter what series you are asking about. I highly doubt that you're the ONLY person to have ever heard of a certain series.
Another overdone topic is Inuyasha. Please avoid making an Inuyasha thread unless it's original. 'Have you heard of Inuyasha?' 'Who likes Inuyasha?' 'I hate Kagome' etc. are not original.
Just because something is Japanese, doesn't mean it belongs in A/M/C. Topics about Japanese live action shows do not belong here. Topics about speaking Japanese do not belong here.
How to Get a Thread Moved
This is something that most of the newer people don't know how to do. I'm going to walk you all through it, step by step. You'll find that it is VERY simple.
~First, goto the Forum Index. At the bottom, you will see some purple names. They are moderators. Click on one.
~Next, click on the PM button in the mod's profile page.
~For the title of the PM, type something along the lines of 'Misplaced thread'
~In the message, give a link to the thread, and ask if the mod can move it.
~Send the PM.
You can use the same process to report other TOS violations. People asking for porn, suicide encouragement, etc. etc. You would need to provide the violator's username, a link to the violation, and any other information, if there is any.
<center>Miscellaneous</center>
Correcting a user who has made an error
We all see it. A user who has a sig that is too large. Someone who posts a link to an anime download site with licensed anime. A sticky duplicate. The list goes on.
When you see someone has done something wrong, don't flame them. Be polite. State the rule that has been broken, and tell the person how to fix it. If the problem isn't solved by the violator in a timely fashion, contact a mod.
Oh, one last thing. When someone makes a duplicate thread, or someone misplaces something, ONE MESSAGE IS ENOUGH. If someone comes in the thread and says 'This is a sticky duplicate', you don't need to quote this person. You don't need to post a message about it. I'm sick of going into a thread, and see 14 messages about 'OMG this is overdone' spring up over an hour.
Lag, a.k.a. My post isn't showing up!
Gaia experiences a lot of lag. Please try to understand this and be patient. Let's say you post a thread at 4:45. You goto the forum, and see that the thread isn't there! Look at the time next to the first thread below the stickies. If the time says 4:40, the site is lagging. Give it a few moments. Lag occurs. Please be patient and wait 5 or 10 minutes before you attempt to repost something you think never went through.

Misconceptions
There are some common misconceptions I've come across. Allow me to clarify them.
~Totally Spies and Code: LYOKO are not American made. They are both made in France.
~WinX club is not made in America. It is made in Italy.
~Downloading anime is illegal, unless the artist or licensing company says that it may be downloaded. International copyright laws protect all animation. Even if the anime isn't licensed in North America, it is still illegal to download it.
~Dubbing and editing are not the same thing.
~The Japanese have censorship laws.
~Some girls watch hentai. Some guys do not watch hentai.
~Not all girls like Yaoi. Some girls like Yuri.
~Not all guys like Yuri. Some guys like Yaoi.
~The proper abv. of Japan is not JAP. It is JPN. Jap is a racial slur that many people still find offensive. Please try not to use it.
~Yaoi is an acronym for yami nashi ochi nashi imi nashi. It means "no mountain(climax), no point, no meaning". A.K.A. male x male hentai. Yuri is the female x female counterpart of yaoi.
~Shounen-ai and Boys Love are used to refer to anime & manga that have male homosexual relationships that aren't hentai in nature. Shoujo-ai is the female counter part.
Common Debatable Topics
Now for the subjects that pop-up from time to time. I'll try not to be biased. sweatdrop
In English speaking nations, anime means Japanese animation. In other countries (such as Japan and France), anime means all animation.
In Japan, otaku is a VERY negative word. It originally was a polite form of the word 'you' or it meant 'your home'. In the 80s, many teens and young adults became obsessed with anime and videogames. People insulted them by calling them 'otaku', since they hardly left their homes. One day, a man named Miyazaki (not the anime director), went crazy. Over a several month period, he kidnapped 4 girls between the ages of 6-12. He raped, murdered, then mutilated their bodies. After the police investigated his small apartment, they discovered anime tapes stacked up to the ceiling, and pornographic photos of the girls. When interviewed the man said that he choose little girls because 'adult women have flaws. Young girls are flawless, much like an anime character'. The news labeled him as an otaku. Many people in Japan still associate the word otaku with that event. In America, otaku has come to be a positive word meaning 'hardcore anime fan'. BUT, due to the negative connotations in Japan, it would be wise not to refer to the former go-ers as otaku. Some people will be offended.
Some people say Anime is a French word. (Well, really they say it's Latin, but since Latin is dead, French is the common-day equivalent.) Others say it's Japanese. The Japanese word animeeshon (which they copied from the English language) was shortened to anime. You can argue that 'anime' came from either language; no one truly what the origin is.
I know that post was long, and I truly appreciate you reading it. xd Oh, just one last thing:
Everyone makes mistakes. Try not to be mean to people when they do. Don't flame them when they post in the wrong forum.
If you're the person who did something wrong, don't be aggressive when a person corrects you. Even they are not polite in the way they corrected you, be the better person. Stay calm. Don't argue. Apologize, and do what is necessary to correct your error.
^_^ Thank you all sooo much. I hope I helped someone out. I welcome suggestions on how to improve this thread, so if you think there is something I should add, feel free to tell me in a polite manner.

Common Broken Rules
Many people new to A/M/C haven't read the TOS and the Rules&Guidelines. Allow me to point out some common violations:
~Posting links to ANY material that is over a PG-13 rating (read: Porn) is not allowed.
~Posting links to anime/manga download sites that have licensed series on them is not allowed.
~Sigs can be no larger than 500 x 500 pixels, and must be less than or equal to 100k in size.
~Spamming is not allowed. Spamming is 'Let's bump' threads. A post that is only a long line of emoticons. Posting the same word over and over (ex. A person that posts 'bump' over 10 times in the post). Posting something totally irrelevant. Etc. Please note that a 'bump' if used properly is not considered spam. If you simply post the word 'bump' and only post that word once in the post to bring a page that was at the very bottom of the forum, or a few pages back, up to the top, you are not spamming.
