Flarn.

Once a lover of Gaians, now transformed into a man consumed by hatred, pain, and a desire for revenge.

People hold various opinions about him. Some say he is a destructive madman who must be destroyed. Others say that the old Flarn can still be reached.

Lately, many have taken a we know best stance and have been planning on finding a way to return him to Mother, and demanding our cooperation--and our silence.

But what do we really know about Flarn? Perhaps there is more to this case than meets the eye.

First of all, let us review. Flarn was once a friendly Zurg. He was very close to the group known as Believers. They held secret meetings. He warned them of Mother's plans. And if the rumors can be believed, he fell in love with not one but two Gaians.

His family was not pleased. They hunted him down, all in their different ways. Some, such as Mother, claimed he was sick, and had to be returned to her so that he may be "fixed."
Others hunted him down as a traitor, using threats as their weapons.

Eventually, he was forced out of hiding by Sorn and Zooeep, after they threatened to harm Narf if he did not cooperate. He finally agreed to come with them. And in the skies above Gaia, he was shot down.

By none other than his brother Sorn.

If the UFOs scans can be believed, Flarn died that day.

But Mother was not able to leave it at that.

She reclaimed his body and his craft. She then claimed that she was helping him recover, and that he was getting better.

But then Flarn came back.

He was...
Changed.

His appearance. His ship. But most striking was his change in attitude. He no longer cared anything for the believers or any other Gaians. He only wanted to serve the Zurg. Which is exactly what mother wanted.

But somewhere, something went wrong.

He started feeling intense pain that could only be satisfied with "Darknrgy."He became unstable. His mind started going. And finally, he went rogue, and left the Zurg Nation.

Since then, he has answered to no one.

For a long time, he stated no goals. No plans. There were only rumors of him trying to get to the portal, and fighting his siblings to do so, but always being turned away. And his demands...

WATERMEAT MUST STOP!

But then, the watermeat festival came.

And for the first time, he told us what he wanted:
Justice. Revenge.

He remembers what was done to him. What 11 did to him. And he wants revenge.

Now, here come the tough questions:

Who's side should we be on?

There are several sides to this issue.

There are those that are on the side of Mother. They wish to return him to her, so that he may be "fixed" yet again. They claim that she is the only one that can help him. Perhaps this is true.

There are those who think that he must be killed. This is understandable. After all, besides threatening 11, he is in near constant pain. His old identity seems lost. One might easily assume that the old Flarn would rather be dead than in this state.

Some think they can win him back over to the side of Light with their love. This is a beautiful sentiment, and might be the most beneficial to everyone if it works.

And then, there is Flarn's side. The side that no one else seems to be on.

But let's examine the wisdom of this situation.

Is Flarn really the enemy?

Besides revenge, we don't really know what Flarn wants. But we do know his enemies, which can tell us something.

For he is no longer allied with his siblings and mother. And we do know what Mother wants.

The last we heard from Mother, she wanted to protect us from ourselves, by giving us a 'treatment" that would remove our destructive emotions...
And our free will.
After a meeting between her and the signers of the Peace Treaty, she announced that she had listened to what we had to say and had made her decision. But we still do not know what that decision was.

So if Mother is in charge of taking over Gaia, should it come to that, then what is Flarn after? Why does he want to activate the warp portal? It must be separate from both Mother's goal of takeover and his goal of revenge. But what? How can we know who to side with if we don't know both sides of the story?

Then there's the watermeat. He DESPERATELY wants it to stop. He is even willing to harm Narf to make it so. Of course, everyone wants to side with Narf, and I'm sure Narf means well...
But what if she is being manipulated? She is not the most... intelligent alien of the bunch. Where did she get the watermeat? It is possible they have some function that none of us, including Narf, have considered, and Flarn is desperately trying to warn us about it, but is unable to get through to us. Are we really willing to take the other UFOs word that the watermeat are a symbol of love, and not something more dangerous?

And then there's the matter of revenge. Of course, most of us instinctually cry "No! Revenge is not the answer! Sorn has changed!"

And indeed, it seems he has changed.

But does that excuse him from what he has done?

If a man commits a crime, and then he changes his behavior, then he is still responsible. In civilized society, such a man would be brought to justice. He would stand trial for what he had done, and he would face the consequences.

But what court can try Sorn? No court on Gaia. How can we interfere in a matter that is separate from us, that involves only beings from another planet?
And it does not seem as though Mother or the other UFOs would let any harm come to Sorn.

When looked at that way, revenge is the only route to justice that Flarn has.

No matter how much Sorn has changed, the fact of the matter is that he killed Flarn. In cold blood, he murdered his brother.

Does Flarn not deserve justice? Should his killer remain free? Would the very thought not drive any of us as mad as Flarn seems to be?

For we know that Flarn is not without emotion. He feels cold. He feels lost. He feels like he is falling.

So what shall become of him? Should we turn him over to mother against his will, yet again, to undergo even more "treatments"? Must he be destroyed, even after suffering death once already? Can he be won over again, with love and watermeat, though these things now cause him pain?

Or should he be left to carry on hid own private mission without our interference, living as he can, fueled by the Darknrgy he so craves?

It does come to my mind about whether gaians are supporting the right side. Flarn has done a lot to the aliens. He seems evil. He hasn't done anything to gaians though. I know he threatened KLN, but, well, KLN is a ZURG not a gaian. What if it all turns out to be that Flarn was our hero and not our enemy? Or we could just be wrong and thinking way to much into this.

We should let him be, to do whatever he wishes! He's obviously determined enough to resort to Darknrgy. After he is done with this "Secret Mission," perhaps that is when he should be taken into the care of others...

But as of now, he's going to pulverize anyone who happens upon his merry (r not so merry) way. Let us back off of him for a while?
It is all trivial in the cosmic sense.

Well, it may be that in Flarn's new state he has a much more streamlined way of thinking.
Something like...

"MUST HAVE REVENGE ON SORN!"

Then KLN stood in his way. And he merely decided that KLN would have to be removed in order to accomplish his goal.
Nice report, you got me interested in the zurg plot once again xd

I don't know if he is so far gone as to destroy anyone that tries to contact him. But he is very determined.
I feel I need more info. Testimonies, interrogations, and what have you.
I demand a trial! Break out the law-droids! And make sure we get a working defence bot and a non-evil prosecution bot! domokun

i'm on the 'wait and see what happens' side, being neither Gaian nor Zurg. i also have the annoying habbit of taking the villain's side. but i want to know what's on the other side of the portal, even if it might be a Pandora's box.

Thanks. But do you have any thoughts on the matter?
Herm...flarn is starting to make me think of batman quite slightly.

He's seeking revenge against those who wronged him and going totally vigilante on his former "family" that was so eager to betray him.Yet at the same time while he may think he's in control, his rage and over all search for justice is manipulating him eh'? He's really pulling his own strings in a bizare way.

A trial would be helpful, but like I said before, I don't think it's in our rights.
