Welcome to Gaia! ::

Eloquent Dabbler

Triad

It begins with marbles. Marbles friggin' everywhere. Marbles filled with power--yes, you heard right, power marbles. Problem is, nobody seems to be able to figure out how to get at this power in the first place, though everyone seems to think that it's there.

Well, there are a few who've reached the power within--and they've all gone stark-raving mad.

*****

This is the pre-game RP thread for Triad, a Gaia mainstream event happening the first weekend in February. If you're going to be in Triad, feel free to RP your team getting together, joining your faction, and all of that. You can always RP that elsewhere, if you prefer, but here is fine too. If you're not in Triad, you're still welcome, so long as you follow the rules.

What is Gaia mainstream? It's the place you go when you're in a random hangout thread, or going from place to place with the same character: it's all of Gaia. If you have to make up a new character to go into a thread, that's different. Everything else is mainstream.

The Setting

This RP takes place all over the four major cities of Gaia: Barton Town, Durem, Gambino, and Aekea.

When you post, please include your location at the top in brackets. Like so:

Quote:
[Durem Downtown]

Jeffrey spotted the purple Easter egg under the seat in the cafe, and he wasn't about to let Billy find out...

Eloquent Dabbler

The Cast

As both marbles and lunatics grow in number throughout Gaia, fliers and word of mouth have spread rumors about three new organizations.

The Circle of Justice

Based in a small stone building in Durem, the Circle of Justice is a group determined to put an end to the lunatics that have besieged the area. These folks are determined, devoted, and holier-than-thou. Headed by a samurai named Hiroshi Mumei.

The Fist of Power

The Fist of Power has set up a base in Gambino. Leader Minxi is busy gathering soldiers of fortune to collect the marbles, by whatever means necessary--and she's willing to pay a pretty penny to whomever can bring her what she wants.

The Institute of Lost Marbles

Literally a hole in the wall of Aekea, scientist/mage/smoker Tadashi has formed an institute devoted to figuring out exactly what these marbles do, and what they're capable of. What they're looking for now is a few sharp minds to help them put the clues together and find the bigger picture.

What truly sets these three groups apart is that they're all on the verge of discovering a way for average Gaians to unlock the power of the marbles, without losing their sanity. Who will you side with?

Eloquent Dabbler

How to Join

How to join this thread? Simple. Just post in it. The only prerequisite is that your posts are legible; if we can't understand what you're doing, we'll probably just ignore you.

Anyone is welcome to RP here, as long as you follow good RP etiquette, and you follow the conventions laid out in the above posts. If you want, your character can have found a single marble; however, no one is allowed to RP a character who has accessed the marble's power without my prior approval. And my approval is pre-given: if you have to ask, you probably won't get it.

How to join the real game? Go to the main thread and read the first page. If you're interested, write up your bio in the form given, and send it to one of the people given. Easy as that. The game happens the first weekend in February, and it's free to join, as long as you're accepted.

The Rules

First off, we follow the Anti-Munch Project, or AMP. We've lost the AMP thread to the sands of time; it's basically a list of common forms of Munchkins, people who break the limits of good/fair RPing. Avoid these forms, and you should be fine:
The Anti-Munch Project
Here's the (unfinished) list of what we're against:
The people who never miss a single shot no matter how hard it is (Aimbotters).
The people who can't be hit or just shrug it off (god-moders).
The people who never are without a weapon and ammo (idkfa-ers).
The people who have absurdly strong powers (twinks).
The people who 'balance' thier characters by having a massive but irrelevant weakness and massive powers (min-maxers).
The people who use Out Of Character knowledge to get an edge (Miss Cleos).
The people who do things in hindsight (McFlys).
The people who RP other people's characters for them (Puppetmasters).
The people who RP completely irrelevant things (Daydreamers).
The people who RP actions and time against others while the others aren't presant (Shoe elves).
The people who ignore or alter RPs that they don't like (Revisionists).
The people who RP an absurdly time consuming sequence occuring between other people's actions (Speedhackers).
The people who play as characters that are completely impossible (Oxymorons).
The people who arbitrarily declare themselves the winner with instant death attacks (Baghdad Bobbits).
The people who've taken actions before they start RPing (Gaseous Snakes).
The people who pull-in elements that were approved in an unrelated RP (Augustines).
The people who use an existing persona and only RP them when it helps (Batmen).
The people who alter thier character as needed for the situation (Zoicite).
The people who gain abilities as they need them with no prior exposure (Trinities).

In these examples, A will be our Good RPer and B will be our Nasty Filthy Munchkin.

Aimbotters: Especially annoying when using NPCs, as NPCs don't get to argue about munch...
A: Three hundred seventy of my trained assassin gymnasts crest the hill, sight you, and rush toward you.
B: Luckily, I have three hundred sixty-nine bullets in my chain gun! I quickly mow them all down, each taking a single bullet to the head, and peg the last one with a rock in the sternum.

Godmoders: Obvious.
A: Now that you're strapped to the end of a naval cannon, I fire it.
B: Whoosh! I nimbly dodge, somehow forgetting the fact that I'm restrained by three-hundred-pound chain!

IDKFA-ers: Most likely people attempting to emulate Solid Snake or some other cheesy spy-novel hero.
A: You're all out of ammo for all five of your Ingram submachine guns, 501!|). Since you're buck-naked, I know I can now safely step into the open and begin returning fire.
B: Ha! Little did you know, I have twelve shuriken hidden within my pubic hair!

Min-maxers
A: I've successfully broken into the facility which gave you your incredibly 1337 power armor. Now I pull up the file on it. What does it say about weak points?
B: The metal of my armor is... um... allergic to praying mantis urine.

Miss Cleos: Obvious.
A: ((OOC: There's a secret switch hidden in the lamp.))
B: I suddenly think to myself-- why not check the lamp for hidden switches? Call me now for your free reading!

McFlys
A: Ha! Now that the force field is down, I run inside your evil lair!
B: Um... um... there's also a super-secret second force field which causes you to die instantly! I just didn't say anything about it because... um... I had to do my laundry! Not because I just thought of it now! Honestly!

Puppetmasters
A: I step carefully into the room, peering around for occupants.
B: Suddenly a dragon pokes you in the eye. You run screaming from the room, whereafter you go home, make a pickle sandwich, and call your mother to cry about how she ruined your life.

Daydreamers: Not exactly munch, per se, but it does get annoying.
A: In the middle of the intense shootout, I dash across the narrow alley, ducking and weaving in hopes to avoid getting hit. I'm unsuccessful; two bullets peg me in the shoulder, throwing me back into a Dumpster.
B: The bullets make me think back to my days as a youth, when I had to melt down tin soldiers to use as musket balls against the Redcoats... or was it redskins? I can't remember. Anyway, I had to walk uphill all three ways to school and back, running from glaciers all the while. It was torture, lemme tell ya. And then there's the story of how I met my first wife...

Shoe elves: Pretty obvious.
A: ((OOC: Well, gotta go to bed. Big neurosurgery test tomorrow.))
B: Ho, ho, ho! Now that the loser's gone to bed, I can strap his character to a cross and peg him with rotten fruit!

Revisionists
A: You chose the blue pill? Ooh, tough luck.
B: Red! I said red! Don't go pulling that "I can read your previous post" mind game crap, either!

Speedhackers
A: I walk to the door and step outside.
B: Suddenly, twelve men grab you, carry you off to my secret lair in Tibet, and torture you for weeks. When you finally die from the agony, we bury you in the frozen wastes. Hundreds of years later, arhcaeologists discover your frozen body and try to determine if you're another Lucy.

Oxymorons
A: I'm a farmer with a shotgun.
B: I'm a black hole which emits blinding pulses of visible light!

Gaseous Snakes: An advanced (or is that "dumb"?) form of McFlys.
A: I walk to the door and open it.
B: Being a fellow with a bit of foresight, I hooked that doorknob to a car battery an hour ago. You're thrown across the room.

Augustines
A: Given that this RP's technology base is midieval, I happily drive my cart to the market to buy some maggot-ridden meat.
B: Too late! I already got there in my Gundam and blew up everything with my insanely overpowered weapons! And don't start whining, because my Gundam's already pre-approved in the "This Is Not a Midieval Technology Base RP" thread.

Batmen
A: In this Fantastic Four RP, I'll be Ben, the gruff rock-man with a heart of gold.
B: I'll be Reed Richards, the living sex toy who hunts down innocent women to subdue with his incredible flexibility!

In addition, here are a few other general RP rules that we uphold:

Don'ts

Some basic don'ts.

Teleportation. It's going to be allowed, but it's frowned upon. Teleportation generally leads to less interesting role play, and lends itself to some major munching. As I said above, it's going to be allowed, but teleportation is going to be considered a crippling energy drain, and should only be used as a last-ditch effort.

Flight. Two types of characters who can fly: winged characters (wings can include jetpacks and whatnot), and magic users. These two make perfect sense. People who shouldn't be able to fly are, for example, warriors. The whole "DBZ controlling one's chi" thing isn't going to work here.

Mortal damage. Only if the other person agrees. If they'd normally take mortal damage and they don't want to, they can choose to be simply incapacitated (but they can't just walk away and continue on without any consequences!).

Dos

Well, that's about it for the don'ts. Here are some dos:

Detail. It's not a requirement, but it's greatly in your favor. If you simply write, "Chris slashes at ChikenBoi101," that leaves both ChickenBoi101 and the judge a lot of room for interpretation. It puts you at ChickenBoi101's mercy, because now HE gets to decide what angle you are attacking from; HE controls the flow of combat for that turn. Next time, at least you'll know to post "Chris swings his sword over his head, slashing down at ChickenBoi101's right shoulder."

More detail. This is really a continuation of the last paragraph, only for when you are fighting alongside others. It's just as crucial to be sure to explain where you are relative to your allies when two teams with multiple people on either side are fighting. Think of it this way... if everyone on your team just wrote, "I rush forward at ChickenBoi101," what's to stop ChickenBoi101 from posting, "ChickenBoi101 fires a single shot at the leader, the bullet flying through all ten of his attackers, as they were all conveniently moving at him in a straight line." "Chris rushes at ChickenBoi101, just behind and to the right of his leader," is much better. Which leads us to...

Tracking. Keep track of where the heck you are, and what sort of stance or position you are in. You aren't going to be able to punch ChickenBoi101 in the face, then kick the guy on the other side of the room in a single turn. Nor will it be an easy feat to block with your left hand when your right is extended forward, and your enemy is on your right side. (Possible, but certainly not easy.)

OOC ends... now.
((Let's kick this pig.))

[Road to Aekea]

Aiolos was in a rare mood. He was happy.

Yeah, everything's been looking up since he found his lucky charm. He held the marble to the sun, the little thing seemed to swallow up the giant ball of fire, like an eclipse, just like every other time he did that. He had everything back in order, all he had to do was pick up the pieces of his company, and the money would start flowing in again.

Everything was perfect.

He played his flute, his music had a upbeat cheerful tone, which hasn't been heard till recently. The air whirled around him excitedly Aiolos kept walking, he could see the town on the horizon. The song quickened, as well as the wind. The man strided towards it, into the smoky Aekea.
((The wootness!!))

[Barton Trench]

Anji sighed to himself boredly as he hung upside down from a nearby tree, tilting his head to one side as he looked out over the field before him. There was a large trench a few meters behind him, yet that didn't catch his interest very much. What had caught his attention was a large bear-like creature which was strolling along in front of him, oblivious to his presence entirely. The bear went about its business, leaving Anji to contemplate for a moment....

"Kitty!!" came the sudden decision, Anji jumping down and ran over to where the bear was, his mask concealing the grin on his face. Jumping up into the air, he landed on the creature's back, wrapping his arms around it in a strange hug. As the bear trashed around, roaring, Anji merely continued saying, "Kitty kitty kitty...." apparently very pleased with himself....

A few minutes later, the bear lay facedown on the ground, lying in a pool of his own blood. Anji sat on top of its corpse, a bemused smile playing across his face under the mask as he sat there, the bloody knife still present in his left hand. Reaching out with his right hand he patted the bear's back happily, as though praising him. "Good kitty." he said, apparently satisfied for the moment, not comprehending that the "kitty" wasn't just being obedient. He sat there, humming to himself a strange broken melody as he rocked back and forth, the knife having been wiped clean on the bear's fur before being put away. To anyone who saw this, it would seem to be a very strange sight....
[The Institute of Lost Marbles, Aekea]

Tadashi sat at the metal desk, hunched over, busily scribbling over long strips of paper. Every so often, he'd look up from the marker in his hand to glance out the window into the quarry below, before returning to his design.

Pulling the marker away from the paper, he examined his handiwork. A tangle of black and white vines spread across the sheet, bunching up and spreading apart in a deliberate flow. In the very center of the bramble was what appeared to be the image of a three-pronged shuriken.

Soon, he would find a way for the average Gaian to use one of these marbles without completely losing it.

Taking a drag from the cig clenched between his teeth, he turned to an assistant in a lab coat. "We get any recruits yet?"
A poster caught his eye on the way into town. There was a giant group starting up that needed people who apparently, found marbles. Aiolos had looked at his lucky charm and frowned. He didn't like the fact people were looking for these. It made him be on his guard, the whole thing was a tad bit too specific to him. So much for staying happy.

"The Institute of Lost Marbles... What kind of name is that?" Aiolos muttered, looking down on the poster he ripped off from the bulletin board. His gaze went to the hole in the wall it led him to, then down on the poster again. This can't be right.

Oh, but it was. Aiolos let out a sigh. He took a detour, for a hole in the wall. Fan-freaking-tastic. Ah well, he didn't drag himself over here for nothing. He knocked on the wall, that being the only polite thing to do.

Feeling stupid, Aiolos knocked again.
"Hmm?" Tadashi peered down the hall towards the door. "Do we have a customer?" Bounding past his assistant, he threw the door open, his eyes piercing the smoke to see Aiolos.

"Welcome to the Institute of Lost Marbles, friend," he said, stepping aside and ushering Aiolos in. The floor had been tiled in black and white squares, but the walls remained unadorned rock. Thin metal tubing connected regular hanging lamps that gave the structure an evenly bright light.

"You here to help us sort out this marble thing?" Tadashi asked with a smile.
Sure, lets go with that. Aiolos thought, walking inside the plain, undecorated room, as soon as he saw the smoke, he breathed through his mouth, if he was going to be forced to breath cigarete smoke, he was sure as hell not going to tolerate that horrible smell, that stuff reeked, even when he was as much of a lowlife as most smokers were, he prefered not to be around them.

"Yeah, I saw a poster, seemed interesting, felt like I needed something to do." He lied in a apathic tone, he held up the piece of paper. His other hand was in his pocket, the marble wrapped tightly in his fist.

"So why are you people chasing marbles?" He asked, an eyebrow raised.
Quirking an eyebrow, Tadashi glanced at Aiolos' pocket. "Hm. Well, if you'd come across one of these marbles, you might have noticed that there's a great deal of mystical power locked inside. As a scientist, I must find out where these came from, and more important, how we can use them for the betterment of mankind."

With that, he let the cigarette fall from his mouth, and stomped it out.
[Barton Town]

Shade stood at the back of the crowd surrounding the appliance store, a hood pulled up to conceal his face. Row after row of TV screens 'decorated' the front window of the store, all tuned to the same program. The daily news. Another series of killings by a berserk robot and the deranged individuals screaming about marbles. Shade had to admit to himself that this was beginning to grow interesting. He turned then, and walked off down the street.

Several blocks later he ducked down a side alley, then waited several minutes to see if he was being followed. A poster on one of the alley's discolored walls caught his eye as he waited. Who places an advertisement in an alley, he wonders to himself, or is this something else? Sure enough, it was. 'The Fist of Power,' the poster read, 'an organization willing to pay handsome dividends to bearer of a marble.'

Hmph. That makes three groups. The Institute of Lost Marbles, The Circle of Justice, and now these guys. Obviously related, if only by circumstance. The question is, who has the bigger targets...
