Announcement!

Alright, I really am terrible at updating this... AaN will be going through some transitions soon, and this thread will be shutting down and becoming nothing more than a directory. Beyond that, what exactly will be happening is still uncertain. A new thread run by someone else but still fully associated with this one may or may not be set up. Whatever happens, I will be doing my best to gather links to different newbie and instructional programs and such (though I would also be open to people helping me out with that).

REMINDERS:
- If you like to chat, bump, and spam, check out our Chatterbox thread!
- If you like to roleplay or want to practice, check out The Shooting Star!

Thanks to everyone for your help and patience.

Dear Gaians,

I have been an internet user for about 8 or 9 years, and a member of Gaia since June 1, 2005. I've been a member of some large sites, some small sites, some great sites, and some sites that died away. There's a number things I've learned in the time that has passed, and certainly many more that I have not. I've also gone by many names, and invite you to call me what you like - that is, so long as I know you mean me, and it's not something meant to insult.

Something that is very apparent on Gaia is that many of the members need help around the site, especially the new ones. This can be something simple as knowing where to get a particular item, to something more lengthy, such as getting lessons on how to role play.

Furthering this problem is something worse: flaming of those who aren't sure where to look for information, who have a bit of trouble, who do not yet understand how much many don't like chatspeak, et cetera. Being rude to these people generally won't have that great of an effect on them; instead, we often end up with one more rude n00b or another dead account that just takes up space.

I have seen attempts to help these people, though, and those who are patient with them. I've tried to help out, too (though, admittedly, I have participated in a minnor bit of n00b bashing and have wanted to slap some people who type very poorly). These things are limited in how much help they actually are. But, because there does seem to be willingness to help, and because individual attempts are so limited, I decided to create this thread: Adopt A Newbie.

So to all of you, newbies and oldies alike - Welcome to GaiaOnline.

Sincerely,
Novalyyn
10/24/07

There are just a few more things that you should know, before you go on...

First, you do not have to be new to be considered a "Newbie." I'm using the word to replace "student," so you only need to be willing to learn.

Second, this is a free service. Depending on how things go I may request donations to help with certain things, but you will never be required to pay for anything by Adopt-A-Newbie.

Third, anyone can help anyone else, whether Newbie, Mentor, or random passer-by. That's what this thread is all about, after all!

If you've read the first post (like you're supposed to razz ), you may be wondering, "What's the point of adoption of anyone can help anyone?" The reason is quite simple, really. Mentoring. It's a little more in-depth than a few tips here and there.

The job of the Newbies is to be willing to learn and grow, and to listen to their Mentor. If given an assignment by their Mentor, then provided it isn't unreasonable, they must do it. If there is a problem, they must be willing to admit it.

The job of the Mentors is to teach and train, and to be there to support their Newbie. If their Newbie asks a question or needs help with something, they must do as best they can to not only answer and help, but to teach their Newbie how to do things for themself.

Remember - this is a free service!

The Process

This thread serves mainly as a list of people who want help and people who are willing to help, a way for them to find one another easier. There are two ways to do this, one of which is to simply post what you need/can help with. The other is to apply to be listed up here on the front.

To apply to be listed on the front, send me a PM with the subject line "I Want to Be a (Newbie/Mentor)!" and use one of the following formats:

Newbie/Student
Name: (Type your username here.)
I need help with: (Type what you're asking for help with, such as literacy, roleplay, CSS, marketplace, etc.)
Other: (Type in anything else you'd like to include, such as preference or a little info about yourself.)

Mentor
Name: (Type your username here.)
I can help with: (Type what you're offering to help with.)
Other: (Type in anything else you'd like to include, such as preference or a little info about yourself.)

Make sure to check your message over before sending it, as I will not be changing it before posting it here. Also, make it as brief as you can to allow for more space for others.

Your message will remain up for 6 weeks, after which you must re-submit it. Every 2 weeks it will be moved into its appropriate list post, so the most recent applicants stay on top. This is to keep the list current and make space for other applicants. If you want to re-apply early to boost your entry, you may do so after the second week and you must mention that you are boosting an existing entry.

Please notify me if:
- you have formed a partnership to teach/learn.
- you no longer wish to be listed or become unavailable.
- you have change your username/switched accounts.

Once you've been listed, you may still browse the lists for a partner. If you see someone you would like to work with, contact them. wink

There are times when people, new and old, come across Internet terms that they do not understand. This is my attempt to compile a list of some of these terms, to help whomever to better understand. The meanings of some may vary a bit from person to person, but this guide should still be fairly effective.

Obviously there are many, many terms, and I may never have them all. The list will be especially short to begin with, but feel free to inform me of terms that the list is lacking. I'd also like to know about any errors I have. Thank you.
