About the show

Fushigi Yuugi, also known as Mysterious Play, is a series that was created by Watase Yu and first appeared in manga format in 1992. The series completed its run in 1996 with eighteen volumes. Fushigi Yuugi proved to be a fairly popular series and was made into an anime with fifty-two episodes. The TV series followed the plot of the first fourteen volumes of the manga.

The last four volumes of manga were animated in the form of OAVs. The first Fushigi Yuugi OAV is fairly confusing and is an attempt from the animators to link the TV series to the second OAV. Its plot is unique and does not appear in the manga at all. The second OAV is a concise, animated version of the last four volumes of the manga. There is also a third OAV based off of the Fushigi Yuugi novel, Eikoden.

In addition to the manga and anime, a series of novels have been written by Nishizaki Megumi and illustrated and supervised by Watase Yuu. The first six novels tell us about the pasts of the characters in Fushigi Yuugi. So far, the pasts of Tasuki, Chichiri, Nuriko, Amiboshi and Suboshi, Hotohori and Nuriko have been revealed to us. Novels seven and eight are titled Eikoden and continues the story of Fushigi Yuugi after the eighteenth volume of the manga. More novels are planned in the future (the next novel should tell us about Tamahome's past) and there are plans to have all novels animated.

Fushigi Yuugi can be placed in the shoujo genre. It's about a young girl, Yuuki Miaka, who is a normal school girl studying for her high school entrance exams. While in the library with her best friend, Hongo Yui, Miaka is called towards an old book (Shi Jin Tenshi Sho - Universe of the Four Gods of Heaven and Earth) in the restricted section. Upon opening the book and reading the introduction, both girls are whisked away to a world similar to ancient China. They are assaulted upon arrival by slave traders but are rescued by a handsome young man with an Ogre symbol on his forehead.

Soon enough, the girls find out that they have been transported to the world inside the book. Yui has returned to the real world and Miaka remains in the Shi Jin Tenshi Sho. Searching for the young man who rescued her earlier, Miaka ends up in the capitol and the story unfolds as she becomes Suzaku no Miko (Priestess of Suzaku).

The world inside the Shi Jin Tenshi Sho is divided up into four equal parts. The northern empire, Hokan, is governed by the turtle god, Genbu. The eastern empire, Kutou, is governed by the dragon god Seiryuu. The southern empire, Konan, is governed by the phoenix god, Suzaku. The western empire, Sairou, is governed by the tiger god, Byakko. Each of these quadrants have seven constellations.

Each of the priestesses have seven warriors (Shichi no Seishi - Warrior of the Seven Constellations) named after the seven constellations of their respective regions and these seven warriors are equipped with special abilities.

Fushigi Yuugi is a series full of hardships among friends, lovers and family. While some of it may be cliche, it's a story that's certainly worth checking out if you get the chance to. The plot has many twists and turns and the characters are all unique and lovable in their own ways - even the antagonists have their own special charm.

Characters-
Suzaku

Tasuki-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Tasuki is the fifth member of the Suzaku no Shichiseishi in the popular series Fushigi Yuugi. In general, his firey hair reflects his firey personality; Tasuki is a loud-mouthed, rude individual. He has a short temper and he swears a lot. However, underneath his rough exterior, he's actually a kind and caring individual when it comes to the ones he loves. He'll go at great lengths to make sure that his friends are unharmed, and will even sacrifice his own life in order to protect Yuuki Miaka.

As with all seishi, Tasuki has a mark on his body that appears while he is fighting. It's the Chinese character for wing ("yoku" in Chinese, and "tsubasa" in Japanese), and is located on his right forearm. The name Tasuki comes from the largest constellation in the southern part of the sky; the crater.

Perhaps one of the more light-hearted characters in the series, Tasuki has many personality quirks. He was born into a family consisting of five women and one man, so one can only imagine the torture that he must have endured while growing up. Because of this heritage, Tasuki has grown a dislike for women. Actually, there are a lot of things that Tasuki doesn't like...

Tasuki dislikes milk. He claims that he was smothered by his mother's enormous breasts when he was a baby and has avoided drinking milk at all costs, prefering the sweet taste of sake. Er... Yes, well, Tasuki was never one to avoid being blunt. ._. In any case, Tasuki also fears any large body of water because he can't swim. This often results in Tamahome getting the upper hand whenever the two are near water. We're never told why Tasuki is so afraid of water but perhaps he nearly drowned as a child..? Who knows what he went through, having a sister like Aidou.

Tasuki is quite a talented guy when it comes to fighting. Most of the skills he learned came from his times with the bandits of Mount Leikaku. His martial arts skills can be compared to that of Tamahome before Taiitsukun gave him more power. Not only is Tasuki good at judo, but he is adept at archery and swordsmanship to some extent. Of course, for Tasuki, nothing beats brawling. ^_^;

As mentioned earlier, Tasuki has a habit of not being the brightest of the bunch. He's fairly blunt, and tends not to think before acting or talking. He's also a bit dense in the sense that he doesn't catch onto things quickly, unlike some of the other characters. He's far from being stupid, mind you! It just so happens that he's more of an emotional, instinctual character than an intellegent one, and prefers brawns over brains.

Tasuki is a member of the Suzaku Seven, celestial warriors dedicated to protecting the Priestess of Suzaku from harm. Tasuki is also known as Genrou, and he is the leader of a group of bandits who make their home in Mt. Reikaku. These bandits are known to steal from the rich and give to the poor (especially themselves), and while they are thieves, they also have a sense of honor. Tasuki, with his tough attitude and strength is the perfect leader for these bandits. However, he is also one of the strongest and determined of the Suzaku Seven as well.

Tasuki first encounters Miaka and her friends when Miaka is captured by the bandits of Mt. Reikaku following her exploration of a rumor that a member of the Suzaku Seven was among the bandits. Eiken, an ugly bandit who had taken control of the Mt. Reikaku thieves and was ruling them through force and fear (as well as possession of the tessen, and enchanted fan that can throw fire), attempted to seduce Miaka, and Tasuki (known as Genrou at this time) kidnapped Miaka, challenging Eiken to a duel for the leadership of the bandits. Miaka ends up helping Tasuki win this battle, as well as get back the tessen from Eiken. Tasuki doesn't follow Miaka and her friends at first, he does end up doing so eventually, revealing his mark as a member of the Suzaku Seven in the process.

Tasuki has a fiery spirit and is quick to anger. However, he is far from merciless or ruthless and is honorable in his actions and attitude. His aggressive and loud-mouthed nature does land him in trouble at times, but he is nevertheless an asset to the Suzaku Seven at many points throughout the series. Tasuki has a known phobia and dislike for women in general, though he makes an exception in Miaka's case for several reasons, the least of which is his puzzlement over Miaka's foreign attitudes regarding the world.

Chichiri-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Chichiri grew up one of three best friends in a village. One of them, a girl(I think her name was Korin), became his fiancee. His other best friend was a boy who had a small interest in Chichiri's fiancee. When Chichiri was 18, he caught his friend kissing his fiancee. He flew into a rage at these two people whom he trusted most, and started to fight his friend for trying to take his fiancee(although the boy just wanted to steal a small kiss from her, with no lasting harm). While the two were fighting a large storm blew in and brought heavy rain, causing the village to be quickly flooded. Most of the village inhabitants were drowned, including Chichiri's family and his fiancee. While they fought, his friend fell into the rushing water, and Chichiri, realizing what he was doing, attempted to rescue him. But while he was pulling his friend from the water, a large log that had broken under the pressure of the water swept at them. It smashed into Chichiri's head, gouging out his left eye. Chichiri had let go of his friend, who was swept away with the flood. When all had ended, Chichiri had a large scar over his left eye. He chose to pursue a life as a Zen Buddhist monk, but kept his scar so he would not forget his friends, and what had happened. He wears a smiling mask over his real face to hide the pain he has endured from the world.

Tamahome-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The first seishi to be found, Tamahome is one of the most important characters in Fushigi Yuugi. At first he seems selfish and greedy on the outside, but Tama's financial efforts actually lead to a good cause. His good heart and vow of protection to Miaka causes her feelings for him to bloom into a loyal and undying love.

Tamahome is one of the Suzaku no Seishi, and is a well-skilled fighter and martial artist. He is the first one to find Miaka. Although at first he only appears to be interested in money, his true feelings for Miaka are eventually revealed, as well as is a kinder him.

The symbol on his forehead is Oni, meaning ogre or demon. In Japanese, "demon" does not have the same religious connotation as it does in the United States, so ogre might be the more appropriate translation here, and in fact they actually use the term "ogre" several times in the English translation. However, in the manga, it's stated that the symbol means "demon" or "ghost", and not "ogre", whic is why he was teased as a kid, being called "ghost boy". So you can be the judge on this one

Nuriko-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

What can I tell you about the wonderful guy we all call Nuriko? Well, his given name is Ryuuen Chou. He went by the name Kourin when we first met him. This is for a good reason and I will explain further. The next part is a spoiler, so don't read if you don't like spoilers!
When Ryuuen was young, he had a younger sister named Kourin. One day they were in town and little Kourin fell behind her Nisama. She was killed by a runaway horse. Poor Ryuuen was devastated. His parents told him that Kourin wasn't around anymore and to forget her. He couldn't do this. He dressed in her clothes and "became" her in a sense. So much so that by the time he got to Hotohori's court, he was known as a she. He took her name Kourin to be known by. He also thinks he is in love with Hotohori and everyone thinks he is gay. He is not. He just likes to cross-dress. NEVER call Nuriko gay. I will hurt you! Later in the show, he realizes that it is time to let her go and he decides to act more like a man. Sadly though, he doesn't get to act that way long. On a sad day on the snowy mountain, Nuriko gives his life in the pursuit of being a Suzaku Seishi. He fights Ashitaire and is hurt very badly. Even though he is hurt, he uses the last of his strength to remove a boulder from the door in which the rest of the Seishi need to go. In life and in death, Nuriko is a nobel and true friend to all who know him.

Chiriko-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The youngest and the genius among the seven seishi. He is an extremely intelligent child who becomes attached to Tasuki, and likewise Tasuki becomes attached to him. When he first appears, it is revealed he was studying to take an exam to take a seat in the government. He and Chichiri are the two technical minds of the team, but Chiriko is ruled by his character: when it is not on his body, he's a rather average child with limited intelligence, which is a source of frustration for him. The youngest and weakest member of the group, it is unusual that he would gravitate towards someone like Tasuki; however, the reasoning behind it is that Tasuki always wanted a younger brother and is more than happy to fill the roll for Chiriko. His body was taken over by Seiryū Senshi Miboshi, but after regaining control, he stabs himself, taking Miboshi with him to his death.

Hotohori-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The beautiful narcissistic fourth emperor of Konan. When he first heard about the Suzaku no Miko at a young age, he thought the priestess would be the one for him and love him for himself, instead of his title. Eventually, when he met Miaka, he loved her deeply and would do anything for her. Thus, he became Tamahome's rival, but stepped aside when he realized Miaka only had eyes for Tamahome. He eventually marries a woman named Houki, who bears a striking resemblance to Nuriko. He is killed by Nakago during the battle between Konan and Kutou, leaving Houki pregnant with his son Boushin.

Mitsukake-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Mitsukake's cat- User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The healer of Suzaku's warriors. He is soft-spoken and one of the most serious of the Suzaku Seven. The son of a country doctor, he put his natural talents to work and often would help his father with his rounds. However after the death of Shoka, the daughter of the local nobleman and with whom he was in love, Mitsukake gave up medicine and devoted all of his time and energy into finding a miracle herb that could cure any illness. It was during this reclusive stage that Miaka and the others found him, and with a little persuasion managed to get him to join them. During the battle between Konan and Kutou, he is severely wounded by Nakago, and later gives up all his strength to heal the wounded. His cat Tama is the unofficial mascot of the Suzaku Seven, and after Mitsukake's death, becomes Chichiri's pet.

Miaka (priestess of Suzaku)-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

She's an ordinary high school girl with a tremendous appetite and is generous and cares greatly for others. She became the priestess of Suzaku, or the Suzaku no Miko. She admittedly isn't the brightest crayon in the box, despite studying extensively for her high school entrance exams and going to juku (cram school) for hours on end. Her goal is to pass the entrance exam for Junon High School to please her mother and be with her best friend Yui (an admitted genius), though she really wants to attend Yotsubadai High School with her friends.

Miaka is also an avid fan of anime and imitates several characters during the course of the story. In episode 5 she impersonates Sailor Moon's "I will punish you, in the name of the moon" introduction (this is also a nod to the fact that actress Kae Araki was the voice of Sailor Chibi-Moon) and in later episodes mimicks Astroboy and even Doraemon.

Minor Character-
(i have descriptions for all of them but only have a picture for one. when i find the others pictures i will post them up as well)

Koji -User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
(the one with the blue hair)

Koji is the best friend of Tasuki (who he calls by his real name, Genro) and a member of the Mt. Reikaku Bandits, a group not unlike "Robin Hood and his Merry Men" who steal from the rich and give to the poor (especially themselves). Koji and the others are led by the bandit that posesses the "tessen" - an enchanted iron fan that spews out flames when invoked.

Koji first encounters Miaka and friends when he and his fellow bandits capture Miaka to take her to the current bandit leader, an ugly brute named Eiken who is forcing the bandits to follow him because of his tainted possession of the "tessen" fan. Miaka goes with them willingly because of information that she had gotten that one of the bandits might have a symbol on him that would mark him as part of the Suzaku Seven. Koji even contemplates helping Miaka escape from Eiken's clutches, but is later "persuaded" by Nuriko and Hotohori to do so. It is at this point that Genro (in actuality Tasuki, a Suzaku Seven warrior) shows up and kidnaps Miaka, challenging Eiken for a fight for the position of leader.

Koji, with Miaka and the others' help, eventually is able to help Genro take the position of leader back from Eiken, as well as the tessen. However, after Genro leaves to follow Miaka later, Koji is made the leader of the Mt. Reikaku bandits in his stead, and even though he does not possess the tessen, Koji is still very skilled with a sword and explosives, and is able to utilize them to full advantage as a bandit leader. His bandits also eventually fight in the battle to repel the Kutou invasion of Konan.

Okuda, Einosuke -
Einosuke Okuda is the first known person to attempt a translation of the "Universe of the Four Gods" book. He was the one to originally bring the book back from China to Japan in the early 20th century, where he began his work on it. However, his work on the book would prove to be his downfall and one of the tragedies surrounding it.

While Einosuke was translating the book, his daughter, Takiko was sucked into it, much like Miaka and Yui were years later. As Takiko did her work in the other world as the Priestess of Genbu, Einosuke read the book and translated it as it happened. Takiko was eventually able to summon Genbu and make her wishes. Takiko returned home to an overjoyed Einosuke - however, the spirit of Genbu was still within her, threatening to consume her. A helpless Einosuke could only watch as Takiko was nearly devoured by Genbu, and in a final act, killed his daughter and then himself, to prevent the consumption. The whole history behind this was discovered by Keisuke and Tetsuya, as they raced to find out a way to keep Tamahome from disappearing.

Shoka - Shoka is Suzaku Seven member Mitsukake's old lover, and one who is part of one of the great tragedies of Mitsukake's life. Mitsukake and Shoka were once on the path to marriage and a happy, uneventful life. However, one day, Shoka came down with a horrible fever and disease. Mitsukake, a doctor at the time, was in another village tending to a patient. When he learned of the news of Shoka's sickness, he came rushing back to her side. But by the time he finally got back, she was dead. Shoka had fought the sickness to the very end, believing that Mitsukake would be there for her. When he did not come before she died, Shoka's last living thoughts were those of abandonment, anger, and despair. As a result, her spirit did not rest and was reborn.

Miaka and the other members of the Suzaku Seven encounter Shoka when they explore a rumor that she has the ability to revive the dead. Not knowing that she was a spirit in disguise reviving zombies out of the dead bodies, Miaka and the others turn to her for help, especially when Miaka comes down with a burning fever. Shoka says that the only way for her to help Miaka is to kill her and then revive her, but the Suzaku Seven members believe otherwise. Seeking out the now-slovenly and despondant Mitsukake, they beg him to help Miaka, and the spirit of Shoka who is doing these terrible things. Mitsukake agrees, and the ensuing exchange between Mitsukake and Shoka is one of the more touching moments of the series. Mitsukake is eventually forced to kill Shoka again, to release her from the demon that was causing her to do evil deeds.

Sou, Chuei-
Chuei is Tamahome's younger sibling and the next oldest among all the siblings. As Tamahome's little brother, Chuei looks up to his older sibling and attempts to emulate him. When Tamahome is away Chuei is the one who looks after their sick father and manages the money that Tamahome brings in for his travels. While Chuei usually wears his hair back, when it is let down he looks similar to Tamahome, and the family resemblance has even fooled Miaka.

Miaka first encounters Chuei when her, Tamahome, and the rest of the Suzaku Seven pass through Tamahome's town in their travels. The Sou family immediately takes a liking to Miaka and even senses that they belong together, much to the embarrassment of both Miaka and Tamahome. While they do not appear in the series that often, the Sou family is a reminder of the ties that Tamahome holds to them and how important they are to him.

Sou, Gyokuran-
Gyokuran is Tamahome's younger sibling and the oldest sister among all the siblings. Gyokuran, along with her siblings and father, all love Tamahome and his care for them, as he struggles to earn money for them to get by. Gyokuran and Yuiren, Tamahome's other sister, become close with Miaka when she visits.

Miaka first encounters Gyokuran when her, Tamahome, and the rest of the Suzaku Seven pass through Tamahome's town in their travels. The Sou family immediately takes a liking to Miaka and even senses that they belong together, much to the embarrassment of both Miaka and Tamahome. While they do not appear in the series that often, the Sou family is a reminder of the ties that Tamahome holds to them and how important they are to him.

Sou, Shunkei-
Shunkei is Tamahome's younger sibling and the youngest brother among all the siblings. Shunkei, along with his siblings and father, all love Tamahome and his care for them, as he struggles to earn money for them to get by.

Miaka first encounters Shunkei when her, Tamahome, and the rest of the Suzaku Seven pass through Tamahome's town in their travels. The Sou family immediately takes a liking to Miaka and even senses that they belong together, much to the embarrassment of both Miaka and Tamahome. While they do not appear in the series that often, the Sou family is a reminder of the ties that Tamahome holds to them and how important they are to him.

Sou, Yuiren -
Yuiren is Tamahome's younger sibling and the youngest among all the siblings. Yuiren, along with her siblings and father, all love Tamahome and his care for them, as he struggles to earn money for them to get by. Of all the siblings, Miaka forges a bond with Yuiren the most, as Yuiren takes the trouble to make simple jewelry and necklaces for Tamahome's "future bride" to wear and cherish.

Miaka first encounters Yuiren when her, Tamahome, and the rest of the Suzaku Seven pass through Tamahome's town in their travels. The Sou family immediately takes a liking to Miaka and even senses that they belong together, much to the embarrassment of both Miaka and Tamahome. While they do not appear in the series that often, the Sou family is a reminder of the ties that Tamahome holds to them and how important they are to him.

Tama-chan -
Tama is Mitsukake's pet cat, though he also is seen with fellow Suzaku Seven member Chichiri as well at times. Cute, yet very perceptive, Tama is a faithful companion through many of the Suzaku Seven's adventures, and is unafraid to accompany his master in any situation, no matter how dangerous.

Tama first encounters the Suzaku Seven when they come looking for Mitsukake to heal Miaka from a terrible fever. After Mitsukake joins them in their journeys as a member of the Suzaku Seven, Tama goes with them. Though he plays a minor role, he still serves to encourage the sense of companionship and friendship in the Suzaku Seven. While usually on Mitsukake's shoulder, Tama also takes residence inside Chichiri's robe as well.

Toki -
Toki is the grandson of Suzuno Osugi, who was once the Priestess of Byakko. Though not particularly a strong believer in the legend of the book that his grandmother told him about when he was young, he nevertheless feels a responsibility to care for her in her final days. A monk by trade, Toki is a spiritual man, and one who knows very well the tragedy that befell those that came into contact with the "Universe of the Four Gods" book.

Toki encounters Keisuke, Miaka's brother, and his friend Tetsuya in their investigation of the history behind the book. He informs them of its tragic past, and eventually comes to be a believer in the book's power after Suzuno is reunited with one of the Byakko Seven that she had fallen in love with, Tatara. Later, he makes another appearance with Miaka and her friends as they go to visit the grave of the Priestess of Genbu, in the OAV series.

Xi Fang -
Xi Fang is the adopted daughter of former Byakko Seven members Subaru and Tokaki. She was taken in shortly after her parents passed away and has been under their care ever since. While not a warrior like her foster parents, she does have some talent in cooking and housework.

Xi Fang is the one who, along with Subaru and Tokaki, nurses Tamahome back to health after a particularly dangerous encounter with Tomo, one of the Seiryu Seven. She also is later involved in a minor rivalry with Miaka in cooking, one which Xi Fang wins hands down. Sweet and innocent, Xi Fang also has an aggressive side to her that shows itself when it comes to Tamahome.

Houki -
Houki is Hotohori's wife. Hotohori married her shortly after Miaka and the rest of the Suzaku Seven left on their journey to find the shinzaho, a relic that would help summon Suzaku. Houki's looks and demeanor are very much like Nuriko, another of the Suzaku Seven who had dressed as a woman and was in love with Hotohori. Houki looked so much like Nuriko that upon returning from their journey Miaka actually mistook Houki for Nuriko, but was embarrassed when she saw that Houki was clearly female.

Houki was pregnant with Hotohori's child (and heir to the throne) when Hotohori died in battle stopping the invasion of Konan by Kutou, the country that worships Seiryu, god of the East. Houki's pain and suffering was great afterwards, and even though she was able to give birth to Boushin, their son, she was never truly able to forget the loss of her love, so soon after their marriage. Boushin was also likewise affected, as he never spoke a word for the first two years of his life.

However, a reunion was arranged, as Miaka's second journey into the world of the book would dictate. Looking for Tamahome's memories, Miaka and her companions ended up at Hotohori's palace, where Hotohori's spirit had returned. After foiling an attempt on his son's life by the servants of Tenkou, Hotohori was finally able to get Houki to see his spirit form, much to her happiness. Eventually Hotohori and the others are able to foil a second attempt on Boushin's life, and Boushin was able to speak his first words to his father, something which made Hotohori and Houki especially happy.

Seiryu Characters

Yui(preistess of the Seiryu)-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Yui has been Miaka's best friend since kindergarten. As children, they often competed against one another. One of the proposed races was to see who could get a cute boyfriend first. Upon entering the World of the Four Gods, Yui and Miaka met Tamahome. For Yui it was love at first sight. Later, when she learned that Miaka and Tamahome loved one another, she became determined to break them up. Yui is a bit obsessive in this. However, it's nice to know that she doesn't do this simply to get revenge on Miaka. Yui truly is in love(infatuated) with Tamahome. Sadly, this love does seem to turn into a simple want for revenge. Still, Yui suffered(or so she thought....) when she entered Kouto Country and turned her anger first against herself and later, Miaka. Yui has a kind heart, though. She was eventually able to see through her anger and see that Miaka truly was her friend. She even thought well of Nakago at the end of things.

Nakago-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Nakago is a member of the Seiryu Seven, celestial warriors sworn to protect the Priestess of Seiryu from harm. Nakago is the cold, cruel, but intelligent leader of the army of Kutou, the land that worships Seiryu, god of the East. His mastery of the power that he possesses as a member of the Seiryu Seven is nearly unmatched, and his power to seriously hurt and drain a person and their life force by his blasts is one that is definitely dangerous to anyone he hits.

Nakago's rather cruel and emotionless attitude may stem partly from his traumatic past. Nakago was born a member of the Hin Tribe, a group of people that the emperor of Kutou had ordered shunned and then exterminated from the lands. The people of Kutou came to hate the Hin Tribesmen and hunted them down whereever they went in the land. It was during some of these "hunts" that Nakago had the horror to witness his own mother being raped by Kutou soldiers. Raw emotion and anger took hold of the child Nakago, and he released his first life force blast, an uncontrolled burst that killed both his mother and the guards that were assaulting them. Nakago was then captured and taken to the emperor, who, when he learned of his power, concluded that he was a member of the Seiryu Seven, destined to protect the Priestess of Seiryu and help Kutou in its bid to dominate all the lands. Having nothing left but revenge to think of, Nakago agreed to stay with the emperor, and it is during the intervening years that he truly hardened himself and mastered his power.

Miaka first encounters Nakago at the border between Kutou and Konan, as Miaka had traveled there on her own to explore rumors that Yui, her friend, had ended up in Kutou. In order to masquerade her true identity, Miaka told Nakago that she was the Preiestess of Seiryu, and was then taken to the emperor where she met Yui once again. However, Nakago discovered Miaka's true identity and had her imprisoned. Miaka was able to escape, but only out of the efforts of Chichiri and Tamahome, who were somehow able to circumvent the magic of Nakago and Seiryu and leave with Miaka.

Though Nakago merely wants to bring order to the land, his methods are indeed ruthless and cruel, and Nakago is personally responsible for many of the tragedies and bad things that happen in the series to the Suzaku Seven. Nakago is manipulative, crafty, and driven by revenge, and combined with his formidable power and disregard for mercy is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

Soi-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Soi is a member of the Seiryu Seven, celestial warriors sworn to protect the Priestess of Seiryu from harm. Of the Seiryu Seven, Soi is the only female - however, she is obviously not to be underestimated because of this. Soi has a natural ability to control lightning and where it strikes, able to throw bolts from her hands or summon it from the sky to strike down an enemy. This alone makes her a formidable opponent. However, she also has knowledge of Bouchu magic - the ability of using sexual intercourse to increase or decrease someone's chi. This can obviously be used in positive or negative ways. Soi's ability to use Bouchu magic stems back to training from her childhood, which was, to say the least, not a normal one. Soi's parents sold her to a brothel when she was young, where she was treated as a prostitute for paying men. When she was 12, one particularly ugly incident involving a customer was prevented by Nakago, who had been passing through the area. Since that day, Soi has been in love with Nakago, following him and eventually joining him as a member of the Seiryu Seven. It is this love for Nakago that motivates Soi against the Suzaku Seven.

Miaka and the others come into contact with Soi on their way to Hokkan, the land of Genbu, to retrieve an artifact called the shinzaho that is necessary to summon Suzaku. Soi attempts to stop the Suzaku Seven by summoning lightning to strike at the ship that they are on, throwing them into chaos and nearly drowning Nuriko, Miaka, and Tamahome in the process. Due to Miaka's use of Hotohori's holy sword, Soi is defeated, but comes back several times in the series to attempt to foil the plans of the Suzaku Seven.

Soi's love for Nakago is, unfortunately, never truly returned by Nakago, who is consumed with his own agenda to use the Priestess of Seiryu for his own ends. Though she is their enemy, Soi harbors a secret envy for the love that exists between Miaka and Tamahome, as it is a reflection of what herself and Nakago could be. Her loyalty, however, is unswerving, and she holds first allegiance to Nakago at all times, something which she is always eager to prove to him.

Amiboshi-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Amiboshi was ordered to pose as one of the Suzaku Seishi, Chiriko. He first shows up and saves the Suzaku no Miko, Miaka, from being attacked by bats. Miaka thinks he is Chiriko and is believes she has found all of the Suzaku seven. However, during the ceremony to summon Suzaku, something goes wrong. Suzaku doesn’t appear, and when Amoboshi begins to play his flute, everyone falls down in pain. Amiboshi tells them he isn’t really Chiriko, and that he is, in fact, a Seiryu Seishi sent to wreck their ceremony. He continues playing his flute but the real Chiriko shows up and destroys the spell with his own music. Amiboshi then runs away. When the others follow, Miaka stops their attack and tells Amiboshi that she knows he really isn’t evil like the other Seiryu seven. Then, however, Amiboshi looses his footing on the cliff and falls. Miaka grabs his arm, but Amiboshi realizes the harm he’s done and knows he doesn’t want to fight against the Suzaku Seishi. He lets go of Miaka’s hand and falls into the river. Later in the series, Miaka runs into a boy named Kaika, who is really Amiboshi who was saved by a family who thinks he’s their long lost son. Miaka belives Amiboshi has lost his memory, when, in fact, he does know who he really is. During an attack on his village, Amiboshi runs off to find Tamahome, telling Miaka to stay put. Amiboshi saves Tamahome from another of the Seiryu Seven, Tomo, and is trapped himself. He is almost killed by Tomo when his twin brother, Suboshi, shows up and defeats Tomo. Amiboshi tries to give his brother Kodoku (a potion that makes you forget everything), but Suboshi refuses because he’s in love with Yui, the Seiryu no Miko.

Suboshi-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Suboshi is a member of the Seiryu Seven, celestial warriors sworn to protect the Priestess of Seiryu from harm. Suboshi is the younger twin brother of fellow Seiryu Seven member Amiboshi. However, Suboshi is very different from his brother. Harsher and more apt to anger than his sibling, Suboshi is a fierce and sometimes malicious fighter that, when angry, seems to be in a rage that fuels his abilities. Suboshi's main power comes from limited psychokinesis, channeled through his weapons of choice, two sphere-shaped objects connected by a long string with blades attached to them. When he concentrates on them, the spheres spin with the blades, cutting anything they come into contact with. He sometimes calls these his "Meteor Bells", or "Ryuseisui".

Suboshi introduces himself to Miaka and company at a certain point in the series, but it is with Yui and Nakago that he is first seen. Collaborating with his twin, Suboshi attempts to carry our Nakago's plan to infiltrate the Summoning of Suzaku ceremony held by Miaka and the Suzaku Seven, and almost succeeds. Afterwards, Suboshi is a constant thorn in the Suzaku Seven's side, motivated by the need for revenge and a rage that is seemingly unstoppable.

Suboshi is definitely an emotional individual - however most of this comes from his love and care for his older brother Amiboshi, who he believes has too gentle of a heart to witness the violence that takes place between the Seiryu and Suzaku Seven. He also harbors an unrequited love for Yui, the Priestess of Seiryu, and protects her with the fervor of a zealot. It is his love, as well as his strong desire to win that ultimately drives the rage and violent nature of his fighting, and in battle, he is merciless with his "Ryuseisui".

Tomo- User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Tomo is a member of the Seiryu Seven, celestial warriors sworn to protect the Prietess of Seiryu fromharm. Tomo is a master of illusion and manipulation, and his rather detailed and intricate illusions are enough to confound a person into thinking that they are living reality, when in fact they are trapped in an illusion. Tomo is known for his rather flamboyant dressing style, believing it to be a part of his image. He is also notoriously homosexual, though he does pursue Miaka at one point under orders from Nakago.

Tomo first encounters Miaka and the Suzaku Seven indirectly, through the use of his illusions. In one, he convinces Miaka that she needs to have sex with Nakago in order to weaken him and get the shinzaho back, and in another, he delays the Suzaku Seven by causing them to think they are in an oasis town, when in fact they are stuck in the desert. Though he does fail in his illusions at times, he is not one to give up and is often able to gain the upper hand with his manipulations.

Though he never fights directly with anyone, Tomo is still able to be a dangerous opponent, ensnaring victims in his hair and feathers, and casting illusions to help in his fighting. In his encounters with the Suzaku Seven, he often has worked in tandem with someone in order to increase his effectiveness.

Miboshi-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Miboshi is a member of the Seiryu Seven, celestial warriors sworn to protect the Priestess of Seiryu from harm. Though small in size, Miboshi is actually a very formidable opponent. In addition to his mastery of black magic, Miboshi can levitate in the air, and also has the ability to summon demons to his aid, something that makes him very dangerous indeed. As a member of the Seiryu Seven, Miboshi is loyal to Yui and Nakago and will do anything to prevent the summoning of Suzaku and impede the Suzaku Seven.

Miaka and the others encounter Miboshi in a tower as they try to prevent the summoning of Seiryu from happening. Miboshi blocks the way up to the upper floors of the tower and summons demons and uses his magic to attack the group. However, Tatara, one of the members of the Byakko Seven who was guarding the tower, is able to fight with Miboshi, using his power over vines and seeds to stop Miboshi's attempts to kill the Suzaku Seven.

It is eventually found that Miboshi lost his physical body a long time ago in his study of black magic, and in order to extend his lifespan has taken possession of a number of bodies (especially those of children, due to their susceptibility). Even though he was eventually defeated, he definitely pushed the Suzaku Seven to their limit, not leaving them out of the battle unscathed.

Ashitare-User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Ashitare is one of the Seiryu Seven, sworn to protect the Priestess of Seiryu from harm. Born as a werewolf with the ability to transform into a wolf, Ashitare was shunned and unwelcome in any place he visited, even his own home. As a result, he turned hardened and angry, and began to eat the flesh of humans after killing them. As one of the Seiryu Seven, Ashitare was found by Nakago and taken into the group, where he could utilize his strength to the fullest.

After a failed attempt by Soi to kill Miaka and the Suzaku Seven, Ashitare is unleashed on them to block their attempts to find a way to summon Suzaku (by finding the Shinzaho, a relic of great power). Ashitare's brute strength are dominating and seemingly unstoppable. However, both times he tries to kill Miaka are unsuccessful because of Nuriko, one of the Suzaku Seven who manages to burn out one of his eyes and seriously wound him, nearly destroying his physical body. For his failures, he is whipped like an animal by Nakago, and in the end, Nakago is found to be merely manipulating Ashitare in order to use his great strength, as shown when Ashitare successfully steals the Shinzaho relic from the Suzaku Seven.

Miaka walked aimlessly around Hong-Nan, looking extreemely bored out of her mind.

'I have to find a way to get to Yui!' she thought. 'I have to explain to her that she's being used!'

She sighed and sat down by a pond and sighed.
