"But I'm not very good (yet)!"
an art contest especially for beginning and/or hobby artists

So you're not as skilled as artists who've been at it for ages, or had the good luck to be "naturals?" You like to create art for fun, and wish you could participate in all those neat contests, right? But you don't, because it's discouraging when your art is always overlooked, or worse, ridiculed, when held next to the shining pieces of those at a higher level. If that is true, then this is the place for you! WELCOME! biggrin

Who this contest is for: People who love art for the joy and fun of it. People who aren't very good (yet!) but who would like a place to show their work and recieve encouragement for it. Maybe even win a little recognition in a lighthearted competition. Whether you doodle every day or just every once in a while doesn't matter, just come on in and have fun!

So what if it's not ready for publication in a major magazine or a Los Angeles gallery? Be proud of your art! We need to take a lesson from kids who burst with pride to show us their completely unintelligible scribbles in crayon. Are they happy and proud because it's better than Picasso? No! They're happy and proud because they had fun making it, and they like it, and it's good compared to their OWN track record and standards, not anyone else's!

Who this contest is NOT for: Pro artists, advanced artists, serious students, or otherwise already talented people who think they can snag an easy win by "pretending" they've barely picked up a pencil before. Nice try, but that's not what we're here for! The prizes are deliberately modest for this very reason. We're here to encourage the newbies and give them their moment in the spotlight, especially since they might not get it otherwise when they only do it as a hobby and don't intend to make a further career out of it.

This contest is also not for anyone who is into cut-throat competitiveness, regardless of skill level. It's supposed to be encouraging, uplifting, and most of all, fun. If you can't do that, don't bother coming in please.

Who is welcome to be here: Everyone! if you are a more advanced artist and you find your way here, don't think you're being snubbed just because you won't win this time! Please feel free to stay and talk if that appeals to you, especially if you have insight or stories from your own beginner days!

Just remember that the atmosphere here is all about positive, friendly, relaxed fun. Should you more advanced folks for any reason feel moved or inspired to create art for this contest, you may also submit it, but be advised that if I get any pieces from more advanced artists they will go in an "advanced gallery" for show only, and are not elligible for the prizes. But nobody is required or expected to submit anything at all, so if you just want to talk and have fun, yes, yes, oh please do!

Who is not so welcome: If anybody comes in here and belittles our artists or has only negative things to say, you will get exactly one warning. After that it's straight to the blacklist for you. If something uplifting and nice for beginners offends you, there are lots of other threads for you to be an elitist in, so leave ours alone please.

Special Note: If this contest is well-received, and especially if we get lots of people interested in the idea (even if they're advanced!) I'm thinking of making a more long-term haven for lightheartedness, happiness, and enjoyment in art. If you like that idea or have further ideas/suggestions about that, let me know! It's not for sure yet, because I still have to do a little soul-searching to be sure I'd have enough time to devote to it to make it good for everyone, but if I get enough people interested...
RULES

1. All submitted art MUST be your own work. Don't submit a friend's piece for them, and certainly no stealing, tracing, or other dastardly cheating!

2. If you use a character you didn't create (like a friend's character) in your piece, proper credit must be given (in your entry, not mandatory to put it on the actual artwork). Also, no fanart of professional/published characters this time please (like a tv, movie, video game, or comic character, etc.)! We encourage original ideas as well as artwork!

3. To be elligible for the prizes you need to be a beginner artist. For our purposes here, we will define a Beginner as someone who pursues art as a hobby only, and whose work lacks the knowledge, flash-n-dash, and/or professional look of a more experienced artist. And I'm sorry, but to avoid dispute on it, I reserve the right to make the FINAL say in what is beginner work! And if there IS any dispute, don't think I'm above doing my homework on you either. If you have a near-perfect grasp of anatomy and composition but you think you're a beginner because you can't shade like the guy who draws Spiderman, well I'm sorry but that doesn't mean you're a beginner, it means you're being too impatient about your learning process.

4. NO ridiculing, deragatory statements, flaming, etc. Not of artists (ANY of them, this is not a "bash non-beginners" thread either!), and not of the art. If you want to share a story about a bad experience you had, you may do so but keep things civil! Saying "boy someone told me I should never draw again, it hurt my feelings and made me mad!" is acceptable, but "OMG artists are all just a bunch of elitist jerks tey are so meeeeen!" is not!

5. Keep to the general rules of Gaia, naturally. Artistic nudity is AOK but pics must be PG-13.

6. You can enter as many times as you want, no limit! But if you submit multiple entries, only one can win a prize. Let's give everyone a chance! biggrin

7. If we near the closing date and there are not as many entries as prizes offered, I may extend the date, but I will NOT just close the thread and not give anybody a prize, so don't worry about that!

8. Be a good sport! Sore winners are as bad as sore losers, remember it's all about fun!

9. This is a biggie-- please no critique in this thread, unless someone specifially asks for it, or you ask first if it's okay to give one! Yes, constructive critique is important to learning and improvement, but let's face it, you can get that anywhere, whether you ask for it or not (and plenty of not-so-constructive critique too!). This is for encouragement and what is GOOD about beginner's pieces.

Theme/ How to Enter

The theme is to answer the following question with a piece of art: "What Makes You Happy?" Have fun with it and be creative! All styles are welcome, heck, make it a little comic if you want to! It can be a sketch or a more polished piece, but keep in mind the judging criteria if you really, really want to win.

The only mandatory thing is that there needs to be a character who is doing something in the piece. For example, if your dog makes you happy, that's great! But don't just draw a picture of your dog. You can make it happier than that, I know you can! Draw yourself hugging your dog, or playing fetch with her favorite toy. 3nodding It doesn't have to be a "true" picture. If your character in a story you wrote, Zthar the Mighty, is made happy by a good pillaging, draw that too. ^_^

If there is anyone who wants to participate but is very intimidated by a broad theme, or if you don't want to make up your own original character, let me know, and I'll add to this post an alternative that is more structured, or maybe a link to some of my characters/ my friends' characters so you have somebody to draw. I am not doing it now because I don't think it'll come to that, but if it does I do not mind so know that the option is open. Favoritism will NOT be shown either way, you can't suck up by drawing my character, nor can you be counted down for not being creative enough to make your own. YAY.

Submit entries in the thread, please.
This is the form!
All the fields are mandatory; it doesn't need to be Pulitzer-worthy, just scribble a few words so we know what we're looking at):

Your Name:
Your piece: (either post it, or put a link to it)
Who is in the piece?
A brief explanation of why it makes you happy, or any other comments you may have:

Win Criteria

We will be judging on how much work you put into the piece, how much fun it seems like you had with it, and how well it fit the theme. The most important thing is that the judges are made to feel your character(s)' happiness, or the joy you took in creating it, when they see your work. Color is not mandatory, nor are backgrounds or any fancy bits. Again, it's all about effort and joy, so if you submit a piece that has pretty colors and a background but is done with careless, scribbly-looking lines (i.e. looks like you rushed and didn't care), your score won't be as high as someone who sends in a black and white piece they obviously spent time and effort on. But if you want to do a scribbly, go ahead and send it in, maybe you'll get the Scribbly Award!

PRIZES! YAY!

Each prize includes a single-flower bouquet with the gold, so you have a trophy to hold for your acheivement! Yay! The paper will be colored of course, we go all-out here! (er, what color the paper is depends on what inks I've got so... uh it's a surprise! I'll make it pretty I promise!) biggrin

Prize De Grande Fantastico: 500 gold and a sunflower bouquet
First Prize (2 selected): 300 gold and a blue daisy bouquet
Second Prize (2 selected): 200 gold and a purple daisy bouquet
Third Prize (3 selected): 100 gold and a white daisy bouquet
Scribbly Award: given to the best sketch, blue carnation bouquet

wolveslair for disrespecting our vision

People, if you don't like the idea, there's a lot of other places you could be. Just ignore it if it bothers you, it's not like we're hurting you.

It is possible to get off the SMB list if you apologize, and don't do it again. But you're better off just not getting on it to begin with, because really, what do you gain by insulting us?
