"But I'm not very good (yet)!"
an art contest especially for beginning and/or hobby artists
So you're not as skilled as artists who've been at it for ages, or had the good luck to be "naturals?" You like to create art for fun, and wish you could participate in all those neat contests, right? But you don't, because it's discouraging when your art is always overlooked, or worse, ridiculed, when held next to the shining pieces of those at a higher level. If that is true, then this is the place for you! WELCOME! biggrin
Who this contest is for: People who love art for the joy and fun of it. People who aren't very good (yet!) but who would like a place to show their work and recieve encouragement for it. Maybe even win a little recognition in a lighthearted competition. Whether you doodle every day or just every once in a while doesn't matter, just come on in and have fun!
So what if it's not ready for publication in a major magazine or a Los Angeles gallery? Be proud of your art! We need to take a lesson from kids who burst with pride to show us their completely unintelligible scribbles in crayon. Are they happy and proud because it's better than Picasso? No! They're happy and proud because they had fun making it, and they like it, and it's good compared to their OWN track record and standards, not anyone else's!
Who this contest is NOT for: Pro artists, advanced artists, serious students, or otherwise already talented people who think they can snag an easy win by "pretending" they've barely picked up a pencil before. Nice try, but that's not what we're here for! The prizes are deliberately modest for this very reason. We're here to encourage the newbies and give them their moment in the spotlight, especially since they might not get it otherwise when they only do it as a hobby and don't intend to make a further career out of it.
This contest is also not for anyone who is into cut-throat competitiveness, regardless of skill level. It's supposed to be encouraging, uplifting, and most of all, fun. If you can't do that, don't bother coming in please.
Who is welcome to be here: Everyone! if you are a more advanced artist and you find your way here, don't think you're being snubbed just because you won't win this time! Please feel free to stay and talk if that appeals to you, especially if you have insight or stories from your own beginner days!
Just remember that the atmosphere here is all about positive, friendly, relaxed fun. Should you more advanced folks for any reason feel moved or inspired to create art for this contest, you may also submit it, but be advised that if I get any pieces from more advanced artists they will go in an "advanced gallery" for show only, and are not elligible for the prizes. But nobody is required or expected to submit anything at all, so if you just want to talk and have fun, yes, yes, oh please do!
Who is not so welcome: If anybody comes in here and belittles our artists or has only negative things to say, you will get exactly one warning. After that it's straight to the blacklist for you. If something uplifting and nice for beginners offends you, there are lots of other threads for you to be an elitist in, so leave ours alone please.

Special Note: If this contest is well-received, and especially if we get lots of people interested in the idea (even if they're advanced!) I'm thinking of making a more long-term haven for lightheartedness, happiness, and enjoyment in art. If you like that idea or have further ideas/suggestions about that, let me know! It's not for sure yet, because I still have to do a little soul-searching to be sure I'd have enough time to devote to it to make it good for everyone, but if I get enough people interested...
