I was looking through the guides the other day and correct me if I am wrong but I didn't stumble upon any guides to security. Something this important should be addressed so I decided to take it upon myself. As most know, the incidence of hacking on Gaia is high. Here you will find an overview of basic security such as password protection, clearing out files, cookies and links to download programs to protect your computer. I have tried to make the guide as simple as possible.

arrow I cannot guarentee you will not be hacked. These steps will lessen your chances of it occuring if you practice all of them.
arrow I'm not a mod. I'm just someone who likes gaia.
arrow Please do not pm me about questions when the answer is given here or they will be ignored. If you have a question post it in this thread and I will try to answer best I can. My knowledge is limited but I will try.
arrow If there is something I should add post it in the thread and I will consider making changes with credit of course.

Thanks for coming and play safe on Gaia.

Post I Introduction
Post II Passwords
Post III Cookies and Temp Files
Post IV Keylogging
Post V Internet Security Programs

We are a continuation of the Protection thread. That thread goes in depth about what happens if you are already hacked with some general protection tips. We show you how to literally protect in technical ways. Combine both threads and you'll be good to go.

There are passwords and pins for everything now adays to the point where my list is huge. My first recommendation is to NEVER let a site remember you. Staying automatically logged in makes you an easier target than if you are logged out. So remember do not click this box:

User Image

Yes that means you will have to log in each time. This may seem inconvienant but it is in your best interest.

Choosing a Password

When choosing a password don't pick something obvious ex. the name of your favourite character or something mentioned in your profile. Choose a different password than the ones you use on other sites. Include numbers in it and make it as long as possible. Try to even use words from other languages mixed together to really throw someone off.

Example: treeoui78pu, tz23r6hj3

Try to change your password at LEAST once a month on random days. More often is preferred but may not be ideal for you.

Do not give out the password to anyone. I don't care how much they say please, plz etc the answer is no. Don't even give it to friends, family NO ONE!

Can't come up with something? Try this site recommended by Toxic Haze:Password Generator

Worried you wont remember? Write down your password somewhere (post-it, password list printed out)and keep it handy.

Other password Tricks

1)Too difficult? Try using this tip from another gaian user:

Choose a phrase that has meaning for you and is easy for you to remember. Then, take your password from that phrase.

For instance, if you love Inuyasha, having the password "Inuyasha" could be guessed not only by friends, but by anyone who reads your posts. On the other hand, if you can remember the phrase " I think Inuyasha is way too jealous of Koga" you can easily remember "ItIiw2joK"

Now, to the casual observer, that looks like a random sampling of capital and lower case letters with a number thrown in, but if you can remember the phrase, you will always know your password. You don't have to use first letters, you can use last letters, too: Ikasy2sfa. As long as you keep your password phrase a secret, it's unlikely that anyone would ever guess your password.

2)One more tip from a user (I actually use this myself)

On gaia, you can sign in using your member number, example, someone's name is say.... "hellsingfan87" well he can sign in using his member number(you can find this on the end of the URL on your profile, and a few more places), so instead of signing in with that name, he can sign in as(for the sake of random) 12345678901.

When you write down your password, write down this number too (instead of your username). write it over, under, after, before, etc...

so it can look like

12345678901/ItIiw2joK
or ItIiw2joK12345678901

So no one knows what the numbers/letters are used for. Just looks like mindless mumble jumble.

The Password Scams

This has become more prevalent and I was asked to add it in so here goes.

Quote:

Username, You have been suspected of hacking multiple accounts on Gaia

We have received a few reports of you "hacking" accounts on Gaia. In order to avoid an immediate ban, we require your password to check your trade history. If you take longer then TEN minutes to respond to this warning, your account will be permanently banned. If you chose to cooperate and we find you guilty, your ban will only be temporary. But if you chose to disobey, your account will lose all of its rights and your IP will be blocked from our site.

Please read our TOS, Rules and Regulations.

Sincerely,
The Gaia Administrators

There has been a few variations of this letter but they basically say the same thing. Here's a new variation that has popped up:

Quote:
I'm sorry to inform you but your account has been brought to our attention, the mods of gaiaonline. Your account has been reported and needs to be investigated with further information. Like any other Gaia Moderator, we do not want to ban any account for no reason so we just want to help some innocent people out. You will be asked a few questions to verify that this is your account. Please fill out the information requested. If you do not fill out the information requested immediatley your acount will result in a Perma-Ban.
USERNAME
PASSWORD
E-MAIL ADRESS
Once your account has been verified that its free of faults, your e-mail provider will be notified when your account is done investigation. We thank you for your patience.

Sincerely,
The mods of Gaia

And one with a different story...

Quote:
Congratulations, you have been chosen to test out a new feature on gaia. The new feature will include new items of which you can keep, a chance to see whats coming up new on gaia, and a sneak peak into whats going to happen in the gaia story line. If you decline, please ignore this message. If you choose to accept please fill out this form to verify your computer's IP address.

Other stories you could also come across are 'make you a mod', 'get a gold/item generator' (botting is against terms of service scream ), and 'help test the battle system'. Don't fall for these stories. They are just stories.

Remember, Gaia administrators will NEVER ask for your password. Developers, Moderators, and Helpers would not ask for it as it is not needed. They run the system and the code that asks for your password. And if it really really is an administrator contacting you about something which is very unlikely, their username will be in a different colour (thanks Syrus for jogging my memory about that). Report and delete. Do not respond just delete.

Quote:
Colours of the Gaia MOD Rainbow
What do each of the mod name colours mean? Here's a list with the colours and the jobs they do.

Site Administrators Creators of Gaia Online, responsible for sitewide development.

Omnimoderators Responsible for resolving account issues, hacking cases, and scamming cases.

Global GAIA Moderators Handle abuse and harassment cases, as well as help oversee ToS issues across the entire site.

Dedicated GAIA Moderators Work in a specific part of the site, handling ToS violations and thread move requests.

NPCs Entertain us in Gaia and run shops, events etc. Alert us of news.

This system WILL be changed soon though to make it even easier!

Quote:
For a while now, we've wanted to simplify how username colors of Gaia staff and Moderators appear around the site. We're about to make things way easier to understand:

In brief, there are going to be 2 main colors for people that are here to help; Green for Moderators and Orange for Administrators.

Green - For all Gaia's Moderators. In addition, there will be a text title under their usernames that better explains what their role is and how they can help you. If you need help, people in green are the ones who can help you.

Orange - For Administrators. These are the ones who manage the forums and lead the moderation and member services teams.

You may also see these other colors on usernames:

Dark Brown - For names will be given to those who do art, coding, and other fun stuff for you. These are the people that talk about features and development.

Black - For all other members on Gaia. So if a black username tells you they are a moderator or admin, they aren't

Members on your friends list will still be in Dark blue, and NPCs will continue to remain Red.

Cookies? Mmmm. Nope not those kind.

What is a Cookie?

A cookie is a type of code created by websites when you visit them. They identify you to the site and can be tracked. These codes can hold various information such as your computer location, time spent on site, times you visited the site etc (depends on what the site wants to collect). They are stored on your computer in designated Windows folders and can be retrieved by websites when you return.

Here is what a cookie looks like
WEAT CC=NC%5FRaleigh%2DDurham®ION= www.msn.com/

Kinda strange eh? So what's the deal?

Why do sites use Cookies?

There are many reasons a given site would wish to use cookies. These range from the ability to personalize information (like on My Yahoo or Excite), or to help with on-line sales/services by keeping track of items in your 'vitual' shopping cart (like on Amazon Books or eBay), or simply for the purposes of collecting demographic information (like DoubleClick). Cookies also provide programmers with a quick and convenient means of keeping site content fresh and relevant to the user's interests. The newest servers use cookies to help with interaction as well, such as helping with quick logins on your favorite sites, for example.

Are Cookies a Threat to My Privacy?

The sad truth is that revealing any kind of personal information opens the door for that information to be spread. The never-ending ethical debate associated with these facts shall be left to other forums. However, it is wise to consider carefully the information you collect and share over the Internet. People can access your cookies quite easily if they are trained.

So what do you do? Clean them out after EVERY internet session of course. Here's how we do it.

Cleaning things up

This tutorial uses the latest version of Internet Explorer (7.0). Other browsers will have similar commands and you should be able to find the options with a teeny bit of searching.

1)Done with things for the day? First let us go to the top of the browser (fancy term for your internet screen) and find the Tools menu.

User Image

2)Let's pull that menu down shall we?

User Image

3)Click on Internet Options and a smaller window will pop up.

User Image
Click on the General tab.

4)Do you see this? Excellent!

User Image

5)Now head to the section highlightend which is Browsing History.

User Image
Click on the delete button. On older versions of IE you may have TWO buttons (one cookies and one temp files)click to clear out both.

6)See this screen? Now go to the bottom and click on Delete All. If you feel comfortable doing each seperately it's up to you but I'd do all.

If they don't use the cookies they are probably using Keylogging.

What is Keylogging?
Silent software used by Law Enforcement and other government bodies to detect data you enter over the internet--such as your passwords. They are also used in businesses to keep an eye on employees. It is very strong and variations of them are sadly available over the internet (many for free) to be used by the wrong hands. Any one with a programming background (ex C++) can manipulate the information.

How do the simple ones get to me?
These software come wrapped up as a Trojan, virus or other invaders. When the infection enters your system it gathers the data secretly in a location specified by the hacker. The hacker then can collect the gathered data and use it in the hopes of either finding passwords, or possibly other useful information that could be used to compromise the system or be used in an attack.

What can you do?
There isn't a whole lot besides preventing and treating all infections ASAP.

1)Make sure you have all the internet security you can muster. Have a anti-spyware, netwerk monitor and a firewall installed (see Internet Programs in next post). Use them to scan your system fully each week and/or as needed. Keep them updated!!!
2)Avoid downloading questionable material and opening unknown e-mails. When in doubt don't let it access your computer gonk !
3)Clear your cookies and files often.
4)If you are unable to safety remove the infection yourself using the Internet Programs go for professional help. Incorrect removal efforts can result in damage to the operating system, instability, inability to use the mouse or keyboard, or worse.
5)Avoid logging on to gaia and your bank accounts/paypal in public places; ie, Cyber Cafe's, Library's, Schools. Who knows what lurks on those computers.

Security through your Browser
First lets do the most basic security step.

1)Like before we are going to Tools>Internet Options but instead of the General tab click on the Privacy tab.

User Image

2)Make sure you are at least Medium High or higher (higher levels get a bit more annoying but Medium High is just a teeny bit annoying). This as you can see ups the protection of your computer's data. Never let this be low!

Programs
Now for the real extra protection. Internet Security programs! I would hope you have some form of virus/worm protection already AT LEAST. If you are unsure ask the most computer savvy person in your family or circle of friends. These programs offer 20-30 free trials but you will have to pay for them and upgrade every year. If you are under 18 do not fret as this is not your job it's your parents. Still you should know what is out there.

Anti-Spyware
Spyware are programs and other junk that place themselves in your system and collect data without you knowing. Usually they are ads that are there to annoy, take up space on your harddrive (and clutter your internet browser) xd . Seriously though, many are becoming dangerous and attempting to access private information such as credit cards and passwords. So this annoyance is more of a threat now. Bottom line...block them with Anti-Spyware.

Anti-Viruses/Worms
The name says it all. Finds, identifies and captures infections and rids them from you computer. I really shouldn't have to explain what a computer virus/worm is. Please tell me you at least have this sweatdrop .

Firewalls
Basically, a firewall is a barrier to keep destructive forces away from your property. In fact, that's why its called a firewall. Its job is similar to a physical firewall that keeps a fire from spreading from one area to the next.

It protects outsiders from getting in to restricted and important files held on your computer. You can customize the level of blockage(security). Only you can go through the barrier.

All messages entering or leaving the your computer through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified security criteria.

Common High Quality Programs
Each person has their pros and cons for each but here are the most trusted, award winning program that are protecting millions. They each have sites with detailed instructions on their use. Please no pms about any of these programs. Some are free but most are pay after a certain number of days.

Sweet God, this is a needed tutorial. I like the simple explanations of firewalls.

Also, you may want to recommend getting SpyBot S&D. It's very good when used in compliment with Ad-Aware.

Probably should. Good point. This is why I need feedback xd

Updated! Also reworded the cookies section!
You might want to consider putting in a section about the ubiquitous [MOD] username tags. I know that's not really hacking, but so many people fall for it that a section could be useful.

I think that is already covered in the other thread I am linked to. I'll look into it though ^_^.
