Article A: Role Playing Basic Techniques
So, you have your character, and you have your Role Play. So far so good. Assuming you have been allowed in, of course... You see, applying for a Role Play is sort of like applying for a job, without the stress and the interview. You want to make sure your application is as clean as possible, and that it has very limited spelling errors and such. Oh, and that it MAKES SENSE. Big deal there.
Anyway, so you are now in an RP. Time for your first post. Make this one the best you have ever done. First impressions! Now then... Introduce your character with a lot of vocabulary and interesting features. Try not to show off too soon, yet, save your more dominating features for when some action or dialouge starts. Explain how your character looks, their personality, or even their alignment (good, bad, neutral). This will give the other people reading this a good idea of how social and dependable your character is. Make it multiple paragraphs, if need be. This first post is not the time for a silly one liner about how cool your character is.
Your next posts should be detailed and informative, leaving no questions left to be asked. Remember, playing in a role play is like writing a story wth multiple people, piece by piece. Also remember that you are not the only one playing, and to be considerate and patient. It may take days for someone to respond. And if you yourself are leaving and will not be able to update, let everyone know so that they will not be forced to wait. A good Role Player has multiple sentences in his/her posts. Readers like that, so that they will know exactly what to do. Don't leave them a simple post that makes no sense, and hope they can understand it. Give them a nice detailed event that they can digest.
A common thing I see is that some people post for others. Make sure you only do actions for YOUR character, because you don't know what the other person can do. Remember, when you assume, you make an... Nevermind. Okay, moving on to the basic lingo...
LINGO!
Role Play (RP): A game involving 2+ people in which the players take the role as the character in the game in order to achieve a common goal or to entertain. (Moderators, check this)
IC (In Character): A normal post where the character is speaking or acting, not you.
OOC (Out of Character): A post where you, the person at the computer, YES YOU, are the one talking or acting.
IRL (In Real Life): Uh, yeah.
Dialouge: Interaction with words between two or more players.
Actions: A series of movements, or actions made by a character.
Literate: A Role Play or Role Player where their descriptions are full of detail and usually have multiple sentences and even paragraphs. Literate RPs require a lot of patience and skill, but are very fun. This is not recommended for rookies, or people who do not understand how to Role Play.
1st person: Where the explanations of detail are given through the characters own mouth, or when the actual character is the narrator of the actions.
3rd person: Where the actions are explained by an unknown, omnipotent narrator.
NPCs: Non Player Characters. These only exist in special cases, and are not a huge part of the story, rather, a liability.
O.o Hm, that just about does it for now. (MODS- PM me if there is anything else I should add)
In advanced, I will explain in further detail some new techniques in Role Play, so keep reading!
