We are over a year now in the manga subbie and I'm so happy that we are still alive and kicking. As all of you may have noticed, we are a HUGE SPOILER THREAD. ::The Story::

Fruits Basket is a story about a young girl named Tohru who had just recently lost her mother in a car accident and decided to live in a tent in a forest. Unknown to her was that the land where she had setup her little tent belonged to the prestigious Sohma family. As it turned out, their class prince, Sohma Yuki resides within the area with his cousin Sohma Shigure. Soon they found out about Tohru's dilemma and offered her to stay in their house in exchange for her to their household chores. All was well until Tohru had stumbled upon a well-kept secret of the family. It seemed that the family had a curse which ran from one generation to another. Twelve individuals were cursed with the spirit of the chinese zodiac animals; Yuki included. They are the juunishis, which bodies turned into the specific zodiac they represent whenever they get hugged by a person from the opposite sex. (or when they get weak or get nervous)

Soon, Tohru meets the other members of the juunishis one after another and explored the darker side of the curse in the midst of the innocent facade.



::The Anime::

Fruits Basket anime has 26 episodes all in all back in 2001 whose animation was done by Studio Deen. US distribution by FUNimation. The anime has a different ending compared to the manga. Ah well, the manga hasn't ended yet. And the anime served as promotional for the manga back then when Takaya-sensei's drawing hand got injured and she wasn't able to draw Furuba for a while. The animators didn't know a lot of things in terms of Furuba's real story in which our dear mangaka only revealed in the later chapters. One would be was that in that in the anime, Akito was drawn as a male, but in the manga Akito turned out to be a female raised to be a man by her mother. You will see more of this below in the major spoilers area. The red-cap boy incident was also not shown in the anime and that the last scene in the anime NEVER happened at all in furuba's story.

I believe there were little details but I think those mentioned above were the major ones. 3nodding

::The Manga::

Eventhough the anime ended, the manga still continued and is still on-going in Japan whose chapters get released in a bi-monthly magazine, Hana To Yume. But all in all, Takaya-sensei mentioned that she was planning in making 22 volumes of Furuba. 3nodding

:: MAJOR SPOILERS (Frequently Asked Questions in Furuba) ::


"Who is the red cap boy?"
The boy was Yuki, but the cap was Kyo's. When Yuki was little, he runaway from the main house dressed as Kyo. The red cap became an accessory when Kyo refused to retrieve it from Yuki since it was already been touched by the rat. So Yuki ended up having Kyo's hat. He was wearing it when he helped Tohru get home when she was bullied and lost her way. Tohru has a very faint memory about this but all she knows is that the boy helped her and he was her first love. Yuki placed the cap on Tohru's head back then and left it with her. Tohru had kept the cap all this time.

"Who is the rooster and the horse?"
Kureno is the rooster and Rin is the horse.

"What the deal with Rin and Shigure? I thought Hatsuharu was her love?"
Hatsuharu is still Rin's love. Rin offered herself to Shigure back then in exchange for him telling her how to lift the curse. Shigure, eventhough he was branded as a pervert, turned Rin down and laughed off her feeble attempts of seduction. He claimed that he doesn't know how to get rid of it.

"Is it true that Akito is *gulp* a FEMALE?"
YES, it is true. Akito is indeed a female. This was revealed in Chapter 97 (see supporting scan here). This was confirmed more by Kureno during his talk with Tohru in the succeeding chapter. Akito was raised as a man by her mother, whose name is REN (not Rin...Sohma Rin is a different person) with reasons only they know of. The younger Juunishis don't know about Akito's true gender. Only the older ones, Shigure, Hatori, Ayame and Kureno. Akito was the girl in Shigure's dream that was hinted before. Akito is the girl that Shigure loves.

"Is it true that Akito had been sleeping with different men?"
YES, she had been sleeping with different men. Kureno just sticks with her because he pitied her and well...he's too much of a nice guy since he promised her that he wouldn't leave her. Akito is also sleeping with Shigure. Ah well this guy really loves her but he often toys with her. Shigure even dared sleeping with Akito's mother just to get back at her for sleeping with Kureno. (Yes, I know...furuba seems no longer that innocent)

"Who is Ren? Is she Rin?"
Heavens, NO! Ren is not Rin. They are two different people. Ren is Akito's mom while Rin is the horse of the zodiac, Hatsuharu's girlfriend. Rin's real name is Isuzu. Rin was just a nickname given to her.

Who will Tohru end up with?
Now, this is a question that had been asked in many many threads. I'm putting it up here so that all of you will get informed properly. In the early chapters, Yuki seemed to be the one getting closer to Tohru romantically. Taka note that he already kissed Tohru before. (in the forehead, that is)

BUT...

Yuki also said that he only sees Tohru as a mother figure and nothing more...since Yuki has some mother issues. It was Kyo who accepted to himself that he had fallen in love with Tohru, although he can't say it to her coz for now he is contented in just being with her since he is going to get locked up after highschool. All cats gets locked up.

New developments in the manga finally came out! Tohru confessed to Kyo about her feelings towards him. The she loved him. For a while there was this thing going on inside her about choosing between her mother and Kyo. She felt guilty inside but thought Kyo accepted her despite all things. It turned out that Tohru is not so perfect after all. She had many things hidden inside her which she had kept that way with her happy smiling facade. In the end, it was still Kyo who got her heart. Unfortunately, Kyo ran away...Kyo was still confused and scared that he might end up hurting Tohru much like that day he wasn't able to help her mother during the accident since he was in his cat form.

Things are more explained in detail in the summaries listed above. You'll be happy to know though, that KYO FINALLY KISSED TOHRU. And no, It wasn't a platonic one. He kissed her on the lips! Way to go, Kyo! (although, she was in terrible shape back then...and bleeding... >.> again pls, refer to the summaries above...lolz)

Plus, Yuki has a new love interest. Her name is Machi Kuragi from the student council. Manabe Kakeru's half sister. Now, that's a match all of us had been anticipating so much. Cute moments as well.

On the side note, in a very recent chapter, Momiji developed romantic feelings for Tohru, but I don't think he really wants to get Tohru, coz he ended up challenging Kyo. That if he won't move...Tohru might get taken away by another man. (yeah..our little Momiji grew up)

FINAL/CONCLUSION:
Tohru ends up with KYO. They grew old together with grandchildren. If the cat is finally loved then the curse will break, which is exactly what happened.

Heaven's NO! It's not childish at all ^_^;; Do not be deceived by it's seemed light aura. It has lots of dark and pain inside. Very very good character development by the mangaka. 3nodding

sweatdrop I have a question about the word aruji. I know I've asked this earlier, but it's driving me mad. You all know the way sometimes furigana will have different meanings than the kanji?

So when Shishio and Touru are talking about Akito and he says Akito is the jyunishi's god(the kanji anyways, the furigana read minna-san no aruji), what does aruji mean in this context? I can't find it in the dictionaries and it drives me positively and absolutely mad that I can't figure it out. sweatdrop

Fruits Basket! So far, I've only read the first two volumnes in English and I'm waiting for the third one to be published, but I've watched the anime shows before.

Well, the anime is after all, just a promotion for the manga. I've heard from someone, though, that in a convention where funanimation was interviewed regarding whether there are plans for making more furuba anime, they said that "It is not included in their list right nowm but never say say."

So there is still hope ^_^ heart

Aruji, meaning 'Ruler'. It basically verifies his position as the head of the family. And.. did you really mean to type "Shishio"....? You see, if the "o" was in smaller text in the manga it would read "Shisho."
As for the manga, I have the 11th, 12th, and 13th volumes in Japanese, and am currently waiting for the next one to come out. I think it might have Kureno on the cover, judging by the current trend...

oh, i went to buy the second volume today, but i havnt read it yet... exept the scanlation of it razz Im so happy, since i think Furuba is the best manga i have read and the best anim ive seen wink
