In his village, about a half-day's walk from here, Tsai Shen was one of the richest boys, and treated differently from most, yet in crowded, prosperous Ba-sing-se, he was just another patron. On his hip was a large pouch of copper pieces, which he wasn't too concerned with, but inside his over shirt was a smaller 'wallet' of larger denominations, one he wasn't foolish enough to leave unguarded. Tsai Shen was wealthy, not stupid, however often those two attributes went hand-in-hand.

Turning from a small, obviously poor child, whom now clentched twelve of his copper pieces in tiny fingers, he frowned, eyeing the wares of the crowded bar and market area. This was boring. It was too bad he didn't have any real friends. The poorer boys in his village hated him, and the more wealthy ones were rather uninteresting.

He'd been changing in the slightest. After all, he still didn't truely understand the value of money, always having all he wanted. Silly boy. Still, he was willing to learn.
She had been watching him for some time. There had been times that rich folk had come into the marketplace, rather then sending their servents for them. But this one seemed different. The other ones that had either escaped the repressive boundries of their parents or were brave enough to risk the streets on their own always had a sparkle to their eye, like it was so exciting, this busy, uncaring place. This one was...bored, for lack of a better word.

It had made her mad. What was he doing here, then, if he didn't think it worth his time? She watched him throw his money away on things she knew he wasn't going to use later. She had been following him for well over a half hour.

He didn't deserve anything he had. The 12 year old girl clenched her fists. She wondered how much medicine she could buy for Lei, in that little purse of his. As he moved away from the crowd, she followed more quickly, and started to pick up speed. Soon her small feet were flying across the ground. As she reached close to him, she ran straight into him, falling headlong, but taking him with her.

She had never tried this before, but regardless, reached her hand towards his coin pouch.

She alleviated her guilt by saying that he'd never miss it.

Tasi Shen was more concerned with catching her, then holding onto the pouch at his waist, and after they were on the ground, him sitting up, supporting her weight, he fixed his hair. Not out of vanity, but to assure himself that his old injury was hidden.

Still, he was wealthy, not stupid.

His dark eyes had quickly scanned the area as he'd locked his arms around her waist, and saw there'd been one chasing her, and no reason for her to run into him, unless... Yep.

"Miss, you can have it, just point me to a damn massage area, because my back hurts now."

He'd been giving away his money anyways. And she was pretty. But she was also the most interesting thing he'd met in a week, and he didn't want her to just scamper off.

"And you have to earn that money..."

He wasn't being vulgar, and besides the mischevious mirth in his eyes, he appeared serious.

"Spend the day with me, stranger."
Avani's shoeless feet kicked beneath her skirt as she had been lifted slightly, not expecting to be grabbed quite so quickly.

Her dark green eyes flashed as she struggled to escape his grasp. She couldn't attempt to bend here, there were too many busybodies around that would tell her father. She realized she was already drawing far more attention to herslef then she had wanted.

Her arms hung limp at her sides as she gave up, hoping the crowd would turn away.

"Why would I know where a massage area is at?" she spat back. "I don't have time for frivolities, like you."

Avani felt she had bared a great deal of humiliation that day already when the boy suggested, no, appeared more to demand, her to spend the day with him.

"Rich brat!" she cried.

Standing up straight, he still had his arms around her, and squeezed affectionately for effect, as he grinned charmingly at the crowd.

"My girlfriend likes to joke around... Sorry to disrupt anything!"

A few goodnatured chuckles, and comments on the 'humor of youth' and the two were left unnoticed, at which point he let her go, that smile still on his strangely dark face, causing a flash of white, perfect teeth.

"Now, now. No need to be rude. After all, it was you who ran into me."

A pause, and he tapped his chin, humor glinting in his eyes as he leaned toward her to nod eagerly, face inches from her.

"But then, being my girlfriend, of course you would miss me so much to need to barrel onto me like that."

A larrrrrge grin, and he lifted her hand, planting a kiss with a bowing flourish, before fully detaching his almost-torn-off copper pouch, and tossing it toward her, expecting her to catch it.

"Easy money. Just accompany a spoiled brat for the day. Of course, you could always call me Tsai Shen... Hmm, what can I call you?"
"I am NOT your girlfriend," she hissed in a low voice, but was happy to see the crowd dissipate, all the same.

"I believe it was you who was in my way," she said boldly, crossing her arms and staring at him hardly.

The small child snatched her hand away as the rich youth kissed it and she blushed furiously. "Why you..."

Her hand was easy and quick to catch the flung pouch, then stared down at it. Was it worth it? It felt relativly heavy... She squeezed the top of the pouch angrily, feeling the shame. What a worthless way to earn money, so pathetic, to accept money from a rich boy with a whim.

She gritted her teeth. "Avani," she said quietly. "My name is Avani."

And she would stick with rich brat for his name. And if he tried to call her his girlfriend again, he'd have dirt in places he didn't know exsisted. She grinned grimly. Yes, she always had that, if it came to it.

"... Avani..."

Tsai Shen looked serious for a split second, before that cheeky grin lit his face and he grabbed her hand, as if they really were a couple, strolling through the market place.

"I like that. Unique."

A chuckle, and he glanced around, looking entirely uninterested in the various booths. Sighing, he wanted something to liven things up, and got an idea, his brows shooting up.

"Do you want anything? I'll get it. Or, or, can you do anything?"

She seemed like the type to have a few secrets. He had some.
She sighed, but let herself be dragged off down the street. Although Tsai Shen held her hand, she stood as far from him as possible, so as not to make it look worse.

Avani started to shake her head, to say that she didn't want anything when her stomach growled loudly. She blushed and put a hand over it and looked at the ground.

"I...I'm hungry," she said shyly. She wasn't sure why she felt bad about him buying her lunch. Why should she care? He had money and she didn't.

But still.

"There's a...place, close by," she said hesitantly. "It's kind of fancy..." She could never go in there, obviously. But even some of the wealthy people of that area, she heard, had had trouble getting in as well. Maybe this little rich boy would know something she didn't.

Her mind started spinning as she tried to decide where else they could go. He didn't seem to like this marketplace scene, maybe she could take him slightly outside of town.

Her pale face went pink, briefly. "Do anything? I-I...no. I don't think so." She wrung her hands together nervously.

"Well, if that's where you want to go, then that's where we're going."

Tsai Shen was a strange mix of immaturity and kindness, and although he seemed to find a great deal of humor is this whole situation, he didn't really have any ulterior motives. He just wanted some company.

"Besides, I'm hungry too."

He seemed to be attempting to put her at ease, by suggesting that he was about to get something to eat anyways, so it wasn't as if it was her fault.

"And that can't be true, Avani. EVERYONE can do SOMETHING. I was just wondering if you could do anything special."
Avani took the lead and led them from the crowded streets of the marketsquare to an side street that was far more open. She breathed a sigh of relief. So many people made her nervous and she hated being sqashed between them. She watched the dirt as she walked.

"Well..." her eyes darted around as she thought about her stuffed animal sitting at home, next to her sister in the bed. Lei had begged it to be left with her while Avani was out. The young bender hadn't wanted to, but she had trouble saying no to her sister. "I nurse my sister alright, I guess..." as good as anyone could, on her budget. "But no...um, nothing really that special," she looked up and smiled unconvincingly.

A few twists and turns on the intricate workings of the back streets let them out finally to a fancier, ritzier part of town. There was no pushing and shoving here, like the marketsqure. These people were cultured and polite. She swallowed nervously and hesitated, then pointed down the street, where a fancy sign with a flowery patteren carved into the wood hung above the door.

"That's it," she said, looking over at him and suddenly realizing that he was a little taller then her. She was also starting to become uncomfortably aware of the difference in dress between the two.

"Better'n what I can do."

Yawning, his stretched his arms up, looking at the restaurant. Sure, it was a bit ritzy, but it wasn't that special. They'd get in easily. However, he spoke, without even glancing over at her.

"Want new clothing?"

Tsai Shen didn't mind either way, in fact, he'd even enjoy seeing the looks on the faces of the others inside the establishment. Still, Avani was already really uncomfortable with him, and he had cash to burn...

"This is all bonus stuff, just from hanging out with me, I'm not taking it out of the money pouch I gave you, okay?"

So maybe the prat DID have a heart, hmm?

[xD I thought I replied ages ago.]
((Haha, s'ok. XD ))

"Oh, I don't want you to go out of your way..." she said, blushing.

Shifting uneaslily beside him, she tugged at her patched clothing, then looked over at him curiously. He wasn't looking at her, and she observed hime with interest for a moment. Why was he being nice to her? Her eyebrows furrowed. No one else was. The rich ones of the town called her trash and pushed her aside and the ones closer to her status either ignored her, which she prefered, or whispered about her mother and brother as she passed by.

"I-I guess...maybe just not something all patched and dirty..." she said finally.

She tilted her head, smiling a little. Perhaps she had been wrong about this little rich boy. Avani shook her head. No, that wasn't possible...was it?

Sheesh, what happened to her spunk? Still, it was nice to not have her call him 'rich brat' every five seconds. He had to be nice, if he wasn't, she might leave. Tsai Shen grinned, and led her toward a small clothing shop. Not so elaborate that it'd make her uncomfortable, but out of quality fabric, and... Pretty.

"Choose what you want, I'm sure they've got your size."

Large smile, as a woman hurried over to him, obviously recognizing his wealth, although slight skepticism was in her glance for Avani.

"Get my friend whatever she desires. And be fast about it."
Hesitently Avani stepped in the shop, looking the woman up and down. She breathed a silent sigh of relief when she saw that this wasn't a woman she knew, or at least, not one that she had ever seen speaking with her father. That was enough for her and she narrowed her eyes and stared back at the shopkeeper, who obviously thought she didn't belong there.

Her dark eyes lit up as she turned and started looking around. She quickly spotted a dark green set of robes. They were simple and low key, but made of nice, durable fabric. Around the hem and the sleeves was a small bit of pretty embroidery. Close by she found a golden yellow sash for her waist and held them up to Tsai Shen, looking for his approval.

"You'll look amazing."

A fluid shrug, and he grinned, having the woman also throw in some new sandals, and paid her, letting Avani go into the small changing room, and when she exited, handing her a small bag for her discarded outfit.

"Shall we eat, then?"

A quick bow from the cheeky rich boy. Tsai Shen was obviously enjoying himself.
