.:*Rules*:.

-Follow the ToS and Barton Town Rules rules at all times!!
-No controlling/killing other people's characters without their permission, no auto-hitting (“He slashed at his chest and drew blood that made him very weak.”) no matter who or what the character is, and no god-modding of any kind. But at the same time be realistic and let them hit you a few times.
-Literacy is a must. Try your best to write in novel format. That means you don’t use **’s for ANYTHING, you use proper punctuation, capitalization, grammar, etc. Type like this if possible. Some spelling mistakes I will gladly ignore, but you just look stupid mixing you “your” and “you’re” here.
-Do not use one-liners, even when you are speaking to someone.
-Do not type in first person.
-Use (()) [[]] {{}} for talk outside the RP. Otherwise, you may talk or ask questions in the OOC thread.
-This is a rural fantasy style role-play, so no modern or futuristic weapons or references unless you have a VERY good excuse.
-PM me your profile with the title ‘Sequel Profile’. If you have a picture, upload it on either Tinypic or Photoshop and put it in URL form. Don’t be surprised if I ask you to add or change something, and take it out if I ask. I will put it up in the Profile Thread, and as soon as I do you may post. Check there for available positions.
-Yes, I do accept made-up races and half-breeds, though no purebred angels nor demons. Gods and Goddesses are also not allowed. Anything else is fine.
-If your profile is accepted, don’t just get up and leave and not tell anyone. That is disrespectful to everybody. That means that you’ve taken a position another dedicated writer might have wanted! If you absolutely must leave, plan an exist scene. It would be much appreciated by all!
-Keep violence and romance PG-13 like everything else in Barton Town. Both are encouraged as they keep role-plays alive as long as neither are too graphic!
-There’s a difference between characters being mean to each other, and writers being mean to each other. If you think someone is harassing you contact a mod.
-Respect other's wishes. Do not 'forget to mention' something just so they can't attack or harm you.
-I can add or change rules as I see fit.

.:*Story*:.

Centuries ago, when the countries first began to be shaped and fashioned, the Royal Council of this continent debated upon the boarder lines between the four countries: Niveus, Pacis, Durus, and Inculta. The West, Durus, wanted an excessive amount of land while Pacis, to the East, was left with almost nothing. Niveus, in the North, paired with Pacis and together they held back Durus without resorting to battle. But when the first attack hit the Eastern boarder, war and panic broke out among the people. Niveus and Pacis joined forces against Durus’ unimaginably large army, and for 150 years they fought for their right of land. Inculta, to the South, stayed out of the mess entirely.
Eventually Durus settled being the largest country overall, but Niveus and Pacis still got their fair share of land. To celebrate the end of a long and difficult war they began hosting bi-yearly celebrations amongst the royals in each of their expansive castles, taking turns on location. All nations gathered, had parties, drank, and even had temporary romances together before returning to their own homes. For 500 years peace reigned supreme, no real indications of a serious conflict amid them at hand.

Then one year, the Northern royals spotted something else on the map that had been missed. An island, and a rather large one at that. Upon doing some research they discovered much about this otherwise unknown place, including it too had a king and queen, set with their own monarchy. They would have invited them right away, had they not had a reputation most horrendous. Cannibalism to be exact. Still, after debating between themselves while patiently waiting their turn, queen Dugona Henshei finally convinced her husband to invite the Shadowland imperial family to the celebrations.
All had gone well, and as it turned out they were quite pleasant people. However, they did not take the matter of deception well. As it turned out the only reason King Nathius agreed for them to come was because he sought a chance to invade them whilst they were away, and Dugona wanted someone she could relate her cannibalistic nature to. As soon as she discovered this was not true, and their reputation was false, she became so angry she turned and attacked the Shadowland child, guard, and one of her own servants. Conflict arose and due to their actions, war once again rose it’s ugly head not a month afterward. Once again Inculta did not join, for they were having problem of their own dealing with the family.

Niveus, Pacis and Durus all made an army united against the Shadowland. Pacis joined because they saw it as their way of paying back Niveus for aiding them in the last war, while Durus joined because they had grown bored and needed a new form of excitement. The Shadowland, amazingly enough, proved to have an army to nearly equal all three combined. Their hostilities raged for only a few years before the three main countries decided to ship off the wealthy and important to Inculta, where they thought they would all be safe. Of course they were, and the country took them in as a favor. Several hundred died due to the extreme climate change, and those who survived grew weaker by the day. However, the majority managed to scrape by and nestle themselves in with their families.
But once the Shadowland discovered this some years later, they sprang at the chance to offset the war. Once the other three regions were distracted they came from behind and invaded Inculta at it’s weakest low. Every town, city and village was taken over except the capital, which they couldn’t seem to find. Many from their armed military died as well, due to going from the snowy mountain tops to a never-ending desert.
Around 100 years after the war first started a break followed, as the Shadowland agreed not to kill those important if all opposing troops left for the time being. Fear thickened and brewed as the dark beings guarded their camps heavily, not taking their eyes off the map which showed where every individual was at every second of the day and night. At a loss, the other royals debated upon forfeiting and backing out with the peoples’ lives intact…until the unthinkable happened.

Picture, if you will, a woman. A woman known to the public as the Sand Mistress, coming from an unknown desert land somewhere around the Southern coast. She is not from any identified land, and her background regarding such is filtered to the point it hangs in a string of rumors. Some say she had magical attributes, others she was the long lost daughter of a sultan who died years past. The one bit of apparent truth, thought to be a myth but hasn’t been proven otherwise, was that she was the reincarnation of Dugona Henshei. The very queen who started this war over a century ago. Not only do the two look exceedingly alike, but they also have the same (controlled) cannibalistic qualities that have made their name known. Her name? Malikanti Embrodahts, formally named Dugona after the very queen she most resembled, but changing it once she came into the country. She rose to the throne and brought along with her the army and forces of her homeland. In order to do this she cast down the sultan and his queen, killing them but sparing the children. Upon hearing of the current political situation she in turn captured the part of the Shadowland’s army that had been based on ground in her name. Their leaders could do nothing, seeing as the bulk of their troops had been stationed there and now remained helpless against the continent’s attacks.
All of Niveus, Pacis and Durus burst out in pride and joy as the news reached their ever-awaiting ears. They wanted to see her in person and thank her for swinging everything in their favor, but before they could suddenly something seemed off. When they sent their letters of praise all they got was a letter in return. It read:

Letter
Dear Royals,

I picture you all, gathered ‘round, waiting for one of you to read this aloud to your anxiously awaiting family. It has been a long, difficult journey for all you political folk, and finally now there is a chance for some rest. You await my news of safe individuals from your side of the map, the defeat of the Shadowland’s army, and my own words of acknowledgment to how bravely you have all fought. And you deserve it, don’t you think? I can’t be easy sitting around, drinking merrily, laughing and jesting as your duties slip further and further behind your turned back. Surly, you thought of reaching an agreement and ending the war entirely…but you didn’t. No, you chose to kill off thousands of people for your own personal enjoyment, the rush of which is like no other. Peace was getting boring, and I’m positive your celebrations were getting tiresome. The concept of a gamble, a real chance where any wrong move could throw you into disarray was just what you needed. Like a wolf on the hunt, not only did you gain something, you had fun doing it.
But of course it couldn’t last forever, seeing as digging a hole over your head never goes unpunished. Soon real danger surfaced, and no signs of stopping were apparent. It became more then a game; it became a reality. And the reality was that the corruption of your nation might actually happen. Did you anticipate this? Were you following the leader and keeping your mouth shut, doing anything that made it look like you knew what you were doing? If so, good for you. I can see it really paid off in the long run.
Now, you reside in my hands. I have your people, the Shadowland’s people, my people, and an army probably more powerful then any of you all at my command. Do you see now that maybe starting this whole bit maybe wasn’t the best idea? Have you realized it isn’t just a game, where people are you pawns, ready to defend the splendid king and queen? I hope you have, for if you haven’t it will make my job too easy. It would take all your forces to bring me down, so you must find peace amongst yourselves least you be taken over by a woman who used to dance for tips.
I hope for your sake you reach an agreement soon, for I would hate to have to follow through with my plans.

Love,
Queen Malikanti Embrodahts
Inculta Council

Now, painful as it may be Niveus, Pacis, Durus and the Shadowland must work together if they want to overtake the new Inculta queen. It will be awkward, seeing as they’ve been fighting for years now, but it won’t be the first time they’ve been singled out or intimidated. They will meet at a location known only to them, somewhere around the middle of the map. Each will have two guards to come along to protect them…just in case. Only the man and wife will go, leaving their children in care of the castle staff.
Meanwhile, the remaining Inculta people who live inside the palace must deal with the new queen. She doesn’t particularly favor any of them, seeing as she doesn’t feel they truly think of her as family. Will they put up with her, or do their best to get rid of her? And will the country ever find peace, or will destruction finally take its toll?

We’ll have to wait and see…

Four basic countries of this giant diamond-shaped continent and one rugged island off the coast make up the world of which these people know.
Niveus, to the North, houses the wise and cunning.
In Pacis, to the East, live the kind and gentle.
Durus, to the West, is home to the dominant and strong.
Within Inculta, to the South, reside the formally calm and soothing.
And finally in the Shadowland, off in the Northeast, dwell the dangerous and unfamiliar.

Niveus/The North: Most of this callous landscape is hidden beneath a solid sheet of ice, where few tundra creatures dwell between the seasons. Coniferous forests are spaced out, sprouting out of the permafrost-ridden soil above the snow in the arctic regions while thawing out the further down the boarders traveled. Even if the sky is clouded over for the better part of the year, when the night is clear and the stars shine down by way of the silver beams of the moon, northern lights can be seen padding across the sky in brilliant pastel textures. In the few summer months the small ponds and clear lakes thaw out, thousands of flowers blossoming as grazers migrate with the food supply. Ice halos frame the many icebergs and glaciers that float through the frozen oceans, tearing at the ships that try to get too close uninvited.
This expanse is famed for the royal White Palace, home of the unexplained Opal Gate, perched at the peak of a rock face at the tip of a violent ocean.
They are closest in alliance to the East, the two pairing up for nearly one thousand years against all other forces. Inside the palace is warm and open…save for the top floor in the northern tower. Most royals, after they die, would pass all rooms onto their successors. However, Nathius Henshei’s study remains locked and barred at all times, no one coming or going since his passing. The door is old and rotten, chipping away but never so much a hole opening up for someone to look through. When listening closely to the damp wood one could swear to hear a heartbeat growing louder and louder until the door bursts open and a river of blood cascades out and down the hall, powerful enough to drag any beast downstairs and away from the lobby. This room is what the White palace is truly famous for. (see links at the bottom)
The legendary Simurghs, the philosophical ‘birds’ of the ages, live on the sacred mountain Aubraz at an unknown location. Of both bird and mammal, they lay eggs then suckle they’re young like bats. Resembling a giant hawk, their plumage fades from pale yellow to rich wine, their hooked beaks and keen eyes sharp. They’re wings are as wide as clouds, and are such that they can carry nearly ten people at once during flight. Even though they have only given help during select times in history, all Northern royals have to do is cast one of their colorful feathers into the fire to summon one for help. They are far more intelligent and wise then any other creature, even compared to the most ancient of dragons.

Pacis/The East: Perhaps one of the most sensual of territories, the East shares both the heat of the South and the cold of the North, so rain is standard to everyday life. Temperatures are mild, winding deciduous forests and magical spells keeping others at bay during the war at hand. Their enchantments are most impressive to make up for their less-then-powerful armies. When paired with the North, however, they become a nearly unstoppable force matched only by the West in strength. Otherwise, they are peaceful and welcome outsiders into their kingdom with little difficulty. Freshwater rivers and lakes dot and zag through the rocky cliffs, rainbows arching overhead whenever the sun chooses to shine.
Of Oriental design, the Emerald Palace is tucked away in the capital city, on the wooded edges of a serene lake where few problems exist. The palace is practically a city in it’s self, covering much of the cleared forest to make way for temples, servants’ quarters, training grounds, and many other buildings that serve a significant purpose. Inside the actual chambers, elegant fabrics and bamboo accents decorate the many rooms the wooden spiral staircases lead up to. Blank windows deliver a view most spectacular of the far off mountain valleys, jade green forests and dazzling cerulean sky. Pets may wander throughout the palace at will, numerous which venture too far disappearing into the trees and never returning.
They are closest in alliance to the North, the two pairing up for nearly one thousand years against all other forces.
Because the East is such a nonviolent land, and due to the birth of the Eastern emperor, it was formally home to the immortal phoenix Feng Huang for quite some time. Five colors: black, white, red, azure, and yellow, fan neatly throughout its long, soft feathers. The body was like a swan and a crane bred, along with a number of other animals cluttered together. It’s had its very own servant and outdoor garden all to it’s self, where it sat and brought nothing but good fortune to the people. But war tore this creature away from this land, and now the Eastern people desperately want the fighting to end as soon as possible so their good luck charm may one day return.

Durus/The West: If there is one land you want to aid you in war, it’s the West. Growing up in a land where time is of the essence, where any horrid tyrant could leap out of nowhere and butcher the nearest village in a single day, trains the people to be harsh and assertive at all times. Even in the smallest town there are warriors, and when night falls, combat begins. Weather varies, rain falling on the coasts far more then the valleys seeing as many clouds can’t seem to pass over the jagged mountain range. Cliffs and canyons carved out over thousands of years are strewn throughout the many coniferous forests, raging rivers sweeping those unlucky enough to get caught up in the current to their death. This part of the map occupies the most land, pressing on the East in particular.
Of Medieval design, the Cobalt Fortress is built specifically for defense on all sides. The outer wall has fairly circular towers much like a wide lighthouse, narrow windows used for arrow holes for an added bonus of protection. Silencing spells placed within dwindle the sound of the surrounding cascade so at least some form of quiet can be found. Inside, stone is the main item used, and it is used for almost everything. Carpets and furniture of some sort of triangular pattern wind down and soften the look as much as possible to try and take away from the cold exterior. In fact, the entire castle seems to be a mix of Medieval and Tribal design, the sources of this theme being pretty much unknown. Literally lying just outside the coast, it is poised on a small rocky ‘island’ about a hundred yards in front of a flowing waterfall. Cliffs on all sides surround the fortress, open strips every few hundred feet allowing ships to pass through from the open ocean and deliver food and supplies. Lookout towers are perched in every direction above to signal those inside the inlet of oncoming visitors. Incredibly strong bridges link together other buildings on other small islands, the main castle always being the largest.
Hundreds of years ago the West dominated more then half the known map, but was set back when pitted against the Northern and Eastern armies.
Nesting in one of the highest canyons in the West, the widely known Thunderbird soars across the land above the clouds, wind picking up wherever it flies and thunder crashing down with every beat of it’s expansive wings. Arrows of lightning flash down and strike anything that seems to oppose it, rain rolling down from the rejuvenating lake on it’s massive feathered back. Appearing as a colossal golden eagle in depictions, the Thunderbird has a sharpened beak and talons, blood red eyes as bright as burning coals. Always unpredictable, this creature stirs up storms wherever it ventures, sometimes using this to the Western armies’ advantage over seas but also causing floods that devastate the people. Even if it lives in the West, rain still reaches other points of the map. Its main enemy is the Horned Watersnake that lives at the bottom of the ocean, killing people that come too close to it’s territory. The Thunderbird mainly eats surfaced whales.

Inculta/The South: Even the East cannot compare to the laid-back style of the South, who have not been in any formally recorded war since it was founded some thousand years ago. If it hadn’t been for this country being physically attached to the West and East, it almost wouldn’t be treated as a part of the continent seeing as they do next to nothing with the surrounding countries. Prairies are strewn between the rocky hamadas, tropical forests lining the coasts and climbing the low mountain ranges. Deserts occupy the vastest spaces, a surprising amount of oases popping up in the most random of places. Towns and cities vary in populations depending on the size of the selected oasis, as do the animals that live there. The blistering hot sun bakes the sandy dunes below during the day, no clouds but a wisp in sight. However, at night the moon and stars go on forever in the cold air, until daybreak or dusk sprouts on the horizon.
Deep in the Land of Dawn, the largest thriving oasis to date, sits the Ivory Palace. Made almost entirely of marble stone, golden prints of blooming vines spiraling up the outer and inner walls. The top of each tower is shaped to a bloated point, so to speak, as it is of an Arabian and Indian shape. All forms of riches the family has are kept underground and guarded by giant red ants, which attack anyone who comes near. Spices such as cinnamon and cassia are found more commonly here then anywhere else, having been mainly farmed by Cinnamon birds that make their nests not too far from the surrounding capital city. Yes, to get to the Ivory Palace you must first pass through the city entrance and travel along the dirt roads until you come to the first set of heavily guarded castle gates. Then you delve into an immediate maze, with narrow ten-foot walls, smooth as wet stone to keep people from climbing over it. In this maze there are a variety of animals and creatures to keep invaders away, such as desert Sphinxes, Yales, Crocottas and big cats. After that, there is a second wall with a specific spell to keep invaders from flying overhead. From here on in there are violent pets and guards to deal with. No one gets in, and no one is allowed out.
In the clearest spring in the entire south, around back of the palace in the highest date palm found, lives the earthly body of the phoenix Benu. While this bird flies, drinks and sings, it’s true spirit is leading the sun across the sky from morning till dusk. Coming into sight at sunrise the phoenix gently fades away as night darkens the sky, coming back each morning without fail. Though nobody knows where Benu goes, some say it is leading lost souls through to the light of heaven, also seen as the sun. With the body of a heron, this bird is large enough to put a person on it’s back but not to carry them. Golden neck ruffles, feathers of various warm hues spread throughout it’s long tail and wings, a bright crest of flaming gold and two long dark feathers capping a magnificent head make up a positively stunning creature. It’s eyes are like jewels and beak like tinted glass, which causes some disappointment in the fact that only one of these animals can exist at any given time. A temple was built to worship the sun bird, and still some are allowed to see the Benu with permission of the queen.

The Shadowland: Not until recently did the Royal Council issue an accurate map of the Shadowland, which resides as a large island far off the northeastern shoreline. There are few smooth coasts, seeing as rocky ledges and other surrounding islands encircle the greater chunk of land. The sky is dark for the better part of the year as it is with all semi-arctic regions, so the dominating forests are coniferous. Deep caves are carved into the rocky landscape, housing thousands of abnormal beasts. Towns of rather dark races are found wherever the conditions allow, but much is still left to the imagination of those outside their boarders.
Also left to wander in the darkest corners of the people’s minds is the royals’ castle, which could be more closely related to medieval design if one tried to place it. Tall, crooked towers scrape at the sky, some even climbing higher then the clouds themselves. Odd suspension bridges will connect two towers together, but so many people have fallen off they are used only for a last resort. The name of the Shadowland’s Castle is unknown like the rest of the country, but some have resorted to calling it simply that. This structure is nestled between the high peaks of a mountain crevasse, like the West using the surrounding waterfalls to the best of their defensive ability. It had to be placed around glaciers so they wouldn’t scrape right through; ancient spells were cast to create a giant invisible barrier between the snow and stone. Inside is actually quite warm and almost inviting, with sparkling torches and chandeliers in every great room. Like all castles there is a rather extensive library, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, a dining hall, several sitting rooms, and many other things of the like. Weapons are kept in a secret location somewhere below that castle, as are the extent of the king’s riches.
Even if the Shadowland is the smallest country, their army is unnaturally big in numbers.
Off on one of the few inhabited islands live the largest birds to ever grace the skies. They are known as Rocs, and they’re wingspan can get up to thirty yards across. Sure, they’re big and powerful, but most are so incredibly dense it takes years for them to understand the simplest concepts instinct hasn’t graced them with. They are of vulture design from the ruffle down, and crane from the neck up. Their large beaks are immense enough to be fashioned into a boat, and their pliable feathers a sail. In the fall they fly to an island off the coast of the South and shed their black winter plumage to gain feathers of bright emerald color, to better blend in with the tropical forests. Feeding upon elephants that dwell on the island, and larger mammoth-like creatures of the Shadowland, parents save their young the burden of winter by waiting until flying south to mate. Luckily for the Rocs there are no native people here, as it is a well-known fact that eating the flesh of their newborn chicks will restore lost youth and cause one not to age. More than a few of these immensely strong birds are trained to be used by the Shadowland’s army to fight over seas, but only in the short summer months. When the frost hardens their instinct kicks in and they abandon their duties, leaving the severely small number of trained dragons to transport what is needed.

A picture I found while wasting time on Google. This would be the cliffs, the cursed ocean raging in the background, etc.
