Welcome to Gaia! ::

Not all American comics are Superhero comics from the big two of Marvel and DC. In fact, many of of them actually have stories that do in fact end and it can come in many genres. Kinda like manga, if you think about it.

Here are some American comics, even hardore manga fans should read. Most of them should be available from your local comic shop, and those that aren't can be special ordered.

Oni Press

Kissing Chaos

Lost At Sea

Queen and Country

Blue Monday

Top Shelf

Blankets

Same Difference and Other Stories

Sei: Death and Legend

Dark Horse
Grendel
Usagi Yojimbo
<a href="star%20wars" onmouseover="window.status='Star Wars'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">Star Wars</a>
Not to mention the fact that Dark Horse imports a lot of Manga

Antartic Press
Ninja High School
Gold Digger

DC
Although I'd wanted to avoid inclduing the Big Two (Marvel and DC), there've been enough commic fans requesting that I recommend some titles from the Vertigo label.
Vertigo Most notably Hellblazer and Sandman

Other
James O'Barr's The Crow
Little White Mouse
Return to Sender
Shi
Poison Elves
Bone
Cerebus (fansite)
Kabuki
Elfquest
The Ballad of Halo Jones (Not official site) by Alan Moore.
Strangers in Paradise
Verotik (NOT for the faint of heart)
The Red Star
Herobear & The Kid

Hopefully, most of you die hard manga fans will get a chance to see these books, and realize maybe not all American comics are about Superheros.

WOW... I have to say, but I LOVE the art styles in every one of those! I think all of them rival the art of many mangas I've read... Especially Flight.... I'm probably going to look into those...

Oh yeah, and would you recommend Hellboy? I saw the movie, and I'm interested in the comics...

They all look amazing.
I could have sworn this topic appeared recently, and I already replied to it. Ah well.

Thanks for the recommendations. Now if only the local comics store wised up, and stocked something other than the hackneyed old series that have an undefined number of crossover characters and random obscure references...

^^;; I honestly haven't ever read (nor watched, yet) Hellboy. I WOULD, however, recommend James O'Barr's The Crow and (obviously) Dark Horse's Grendel by Matt Wagner.

Hellboy is an awsome comic! Start out with the "Seed of Destruction" trade paperback. I read super hero comics but I also read some non-super hero stuff too. I like "Way of the Rat", "El Cazador", "Abadazad" and "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", all titles by CrossGen and none of those titles have superheros and they'd all appeal to manga fans.

Also, DC has their non-superhero line Vertigo which is also really good.
I've heard about one called Pervert Club (it's not pornographic or anything) about a group of highschool crossdressers...it sounds pretty good, I'd like to try and find it. 3nodding
I liked the comic, "I feel sick" by Jhonen Vasquez (sorry if I misspelt that.) Its great artwork and the story isn't bad.

Thanks for the tips Grendelrose, I've heard fo a couple of the comics you mentioned but haven't had a chance to check them out yet. The others look pretty cool, especially Flight. 3nodding
Easter bump!
You should know better than to say "American comic" in a thread filled with anime fans who lack rational thought.
This is a awesome post. I will check out those comics when I have money or something.

To tell you the truth, I kinda getting sick looking at manga everytime I go into the store so I'm been getting into American comics especially the indies.

I also would sugest

Gloom Cookie
Serenity Rose
Lenore

which is all from the Slave Labor Inc.
