Welcome to Gaia! ::

Greetings from the Vista Awareness thread. I'm creating this thread because there is a great need for it. Lots of Vista threads popping up, asking basically the same questions. This thread is here to answer those questions.

But I need your help. I'm really bad at thinking of questions/myths off the top of my head, so I need you all to help. Flood Fighter came up with two, which will be added to the first post and answered. As questions/myths come up, they'll be added as well.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Myth #1: Windows Vista is Windows XP Service Pack 3
Fact: Due to all of the Kernel updates, UI updates, security updates, new features and applications, and performance tweaks, this is a lot more than a mere Service Pack. The purpose of Service Packs is to mainly provide security fixes, with SP2 adding a few new features as well.

Myth #2: Windows Vista is Windows XP with a shiny interface
Fact: See the first Myth. Too many updates and new features to be XP with a shiny interface.
Reserved in case I need it.
Reserved in case I need it.

And you can feel free to post now.
Over a year ago, I heard something about file searching being a key new improvement, making it like File Indexing but a lot more integrated.

I already turned off File Indexing, since I don't care about it, it wastes hard-drive space, and possibly browsing speed...

Any comments?
I've noticed a huge increase in searching performance in Vista.

The indexing service actually does something in Vista. That said, you may not find it worth the resources it takes up.
Is the search wizard, dog, and lady in a red car all pixel shaded now?

And how are the search options? I absolutely despise the interface XP has, what with all the collapsed dialog boxes.
Any comments on the release dates?

Will enterprise edition really be out in November? Or has that changed since I gave up caring about vista?

What do you think about the hardware requirements?

What beta is it in atm? Last I got sent by them was 3, has that changed?

Does anyone who use it find all those "cool" aero glass effects any good, or are they just pointless showboating like xgl and will all be switched off after the first day of going "Hey, check this out" to your mates?

I heard a rumour they messed with the task manager. Making it more user friendly AKA removing all the features that are of any use and replacing it with a memory eating graphic and some shiny things?

I'm sure I have many more things to say... I'll post them when I think of more.
How is the scandisk?

I thought Win2K and XP have an abomination.

98's was better.

XP is like... "searching for errors" -> "Done"
Doesn't tell you anything or have any options.
Whats the defragging like?
I used to love the old ui with all the clusters on the screen, xp killed all that fun. Whats vista like?
Command prompt?
Is it still there, or did they hide it away to ease user friendlyness?
And please god say they didnt apply any stupid effects, "enhancements" or "features" to it.

No comment, I haven't played around with the advanced search features, just the search dialog in the Start menu.

I'm still hearing Q1 2007 for the release.

Still hearing a Q4 release for Enterprise customers.

I think that it'll be kind of slow on the minimum hardware. But I think they're fairly reasonable for a modern OS. That said, I'd like to see a "Lite" version of Vista for older machines.

Beta 3 is being bypassed. Current builds are labled RC1, although it has not reached the RC stage yet.

Task Manager is still there. It has been updated somewhat, and there is a better performance monitoring utility in the Control Panel. Far better than anything XP has. But there are no fancy graphics in Task Manager.

If you run a read/write version of chkdsk in 2k or XP, you can check on the results in the Event Log. You can also run a read only version in the command prompt that returns results.

You're going to like Vista's defrag utility even less, then.

It doesn't even show what it's doing. Yeah. I'm dissapointed, too.

It does offer scheduling, though.

And I think when I get bored with XP I'll go have a play with the free and old hardware loving gentoo.

Which raises another point, any idea on the price of this beast?
