I can't discuss the reasonings behind bannings. Obviously the number is highly unusual and I think it's the quantity of accounts banned more than anything else that is really panicking people. Every time someone is banned, there is a chance that they will go public and, innocent or not, make a very big deal and an uproar about the fact that they are indeed innocent. Sometimes that's accurate, many times it's not. As moderators, we can't clarify anywhere but to the user as to what is going on so we won't dispute unfair bans in public.
Personally I don't have the tools to make a judgement so I'm not even tempted.
With the bannings that went on:
They are not for users who sold something and got botted gold or recieved gold through any normal marketplace activity. The marketplace is perfectly safe to use and no one should hesitate to use it.
With any banning, and especially considering the current volume: there is a chance that mistakes were made. Anyone that can prove their innocence despite the evidence that was against them will be unbanned. However, there was a lot of evidence towards these people being banworthy so it will not be an easy task for them. They weren't 'guilty until proven innocent'. They were innocent until evidence showed very strongly that they broke site rules. Their chance to appeal is them overturning the evidence if they can and getting their accounts back. Mistakes do happen but they're not nearly as common as everyone seems to think.
If someone has questions on why they were banned and wants someone to talk to to try and figure out how or why they got banned is free to contact any of us. We can and will try to help them muddle through it, and it just might result in them writing a better feedback form because they'll understand what it is they are trying to prove.
Also .. if you see someone claiming to be unfairly banned you'll notice that we will not discuss if they are fairly banned in public. That is against our rules and it makes for some interesting diplomatic and etiquitte sessions. All that you're seeing out there probably isn't true.

SF is a mess right now with threads panicking about the recent bannings. When you get the time, could you just send me a quick rundown of the facts so I could create a go-to thread with you quoted in it? Right now, what people need is to know what's going on and what they can do, as much as most of the matter is private. I'd appreciate anything you could send me.
