Pop is an umbrella term. The first movement was Traditional pop, which succeeded the Big Band movement, and was a big mover for the Rock 'n Roll movement in the 60s.

Pop is a sound that hasn't much evolved in the last 60 years. The structure is often a basic 8 bar repeat of AABA. The atmosphere is extremely happy the majority of the time. Distortion can be used, but somewhat sparingly. (This rule is broken however, when you get into the fusion of Punk and Pop, and sometimes in the fusion of Rock and Pop). The vocals are the lead instrument in any pop group (Then again, can sometimes be broken in Punk and Pop).

Pop can be characterized by the following criteria:

Happy atmosphere
Cliche lyrics
Vocals being the main instrument (Or the second biggest, in some cases)
Hooks and catches between a happy, comfortable chord progression.
Basic, catchy rhythm.

Power-pop is very upbeat, happy, and fast pop. Basically summed up by The Knack's hit song, My Sharona. Today it's basically the same as it was years ago, and is my personal favorite.

Pop-punk is pop-influenced punk rock, basically. Think Punk-Rock, but upbeat and catchy. This was first started by The Ramones, and is not that well known. Note, though, this is NOT Punk-influenced pop, that's something different, that's not a genre, but more of a neologistic value. The backing guitar parts are often recycled power chords, of minimalism, but the vocals have more focus than that of Punk.

Synth-pop is pop with a very heavy synthesizer influence. Disco can be interchangable with this kind of pop, sometimes. Not all the time, but a lot of disco has a lot of synth-pop elements. This didn't exactly grow out of power-pop, but takes a lot of influence. Power Pop and synth pop have the same type of structure and happy atmosphere, but synth-pop uses a much heavier influence of keyboards and synthesizor.

Pop-rock is pop-influenced rock 'n' roll. The use of electric guitars are semi-aggressive attitude, as well as a little more melancholy lyrics make this genre what it is. Pop elements still occur in these bands, though.

Traditional pop. The pop that started it all. It is a shootoff off of the Big Band movement in the 40's. It was a big mover for the Rock n Roll movement of the 60's. It focused a lot on the singers voice, and less on the band itself. This type of pop is mostly dead, and hardly around anymore.

Alternative Pop is a genre of music of whose bands used very smooth and harmonic natures to show that you don't have to sound like s**t to be good. These bands are often chord based, and have a slower output than most pop bands. It was a movement in rebellion of the British Invasion, primarily started in Britain, but would be carried over to America. "Brit-pop" is included in this genre, as well.

Country-pop is a subgenre of country music that first emerged in the 1970s, with roots in both the countrypolitan sound and in soft rock. Although the term first referred to country songs and artists that crossed over to top 40 radio, country-pop acts are now more likely to cross over to Adult Contemporary. Country-pop enjoyed a decade of dominance, but was taken over by traditional country music in the 80's'; however, country-pop re-emerged in the mid 90's. Country-pop music often fuses neotraditional country music with mainstream, pop-oriented sound (also known as the "Nashville sound" wink . One of the biggest critisisms of country-pop artists is that the gear too far into the pop genre rather than the traditional country roots. Faith Hill's album Cry is a perfect example of "too much pop, not enough country". Thanks to Aurora Merope Riddle

Bubblegum pop originated out of doo-wop and 50's blues, and has been around for over 40 years. So, no, morons, it's not a phase or a fad. The first wave of bubblegum pop was vocal-oriented, with detectable doowop influences. Light-hearted lyrics are often abundant. New wave bubblegum has more of an R&B feel, instead of doowop.

Second Wave Bubblegum evolved in the 80s and 90s out of bubblegum pop. These new bands focus almost majoritively on the harmonics and vocals, with very basic, repetetive, and cheesy guitar riffs, drum sequences, and/or lyrics.

NOTE: This list is tentative. I did not write this list alone, I got the help from a couple people and a couple websites. If a band or person on this list confuses you, bring it up, and we'll discuss the popiness of them.

Quesion: Does pop mean popular?
Answer: No. First of all, that would make pop not a genre, just like indie and Christian, but more of a classification. Second, if Hilary Duff isn't pop, what is she? If ABBA isn't pop, what are they? If The Backstreet Boys aren't pop, what are they?

Question: All pop sucks!!
Answer: That's not a question. But, for people who want to say this, you're probably just afraid to say that you really like pop, since it has a semi-negative conintation to it. It's okay. I love pop. =D

Question: How are The Beatles pop?
Answer: The beginning of their career was nothing but pure pop-rock -- Repetetiveness, basicness, catchy hooks, riffs that are nothing more than ear candy, and surface level happiness. The catchy hooks they play during the incomplex, but oh-so-weird songs they do during the later half of their career is still visible, and thus makes their whole career poppy.

Question: How is Green Day pop? They were punk in their early days!
Even back when they were starting, they only had a heavy pop-punk influence, and influence doesn't make something a genre. The early songs still had catchy hooks and poppy, repetetive guitar playing, as well as using Billie Joe's voice as a major instrument. This, combined with the agressive attitude in their songs, makes them pop-rock, through and through. Pop rock, of course, being the combination of the two genres pop and rock.

Question: NO WAY! THE RAMONES STARTED PUNK!
If you actually listen to The Ramones, they have the anti-establishment attitude towards punk, but the minimalist rock form just isn't there completely. Joey Ramone takes his voice semi-seriously, and Johnny Ramone takes a sort of melodic feel to his guitar. It's not completely abundant, though, which is why they're pop-punk, or pop-influenced punk rock.

Question: So, you're saying EVERYTHING is pop?
No. Noting that about 80% of all bands have some sort of influence in pop, there is a pop sound in many, many bands. And it has appeared in many bands in certain genres, which are the fusion genres I listed here, such as Country-Pop. But there are certainly things that have next to no pop influence, if any.

Note: The Alternative Pop band list is REALLY shaky. Help me out! See a band that doesn't seem to fit? Mention it!

Doesn't that contradict the genre in a paradox?

Pop-influenced Punk-influenced Pop-influenced Rock?

..the Hell?
I've never really thought of myself as a power-pop fan, as my tastes tend toward slower-paced and depressing most of the time (though admittedly, Morrissey does turn out the occasional upbeat song). But looking over that list, I see a whole lot of bands I like... particularly The Replacements, Matthew Sweet, and Motion City Soundtrack.
Hellogoodbye. I love them.
Mike - Full Bloated Idiot

Haha. Well, you can think of bands. Pop-punk bands such as The Ramones and Screaching Weasel definitely had some sort of influence on the early works of Green Day.

It would be a paradox though. lol
