Hello! I welcome all to a Girl's-Love Discussion! Unfortunately, many people tend to be more into Boy's-Love, so it's quite rare to find a thread about this certain genre of under-appreciated anime. Now, I know that it's very hard to find yuri-themed anime just lying around the corner, but hopefully, there are people out there who know great series such as the mildly popular Strawberry Panic! and so on and so forth. =D

Rules:

arrow Posting images is appreciated, but please, nothing too explicit... or too big. Please understand that some connections are slower than others (and yes, I'm also referring to my own), so if you must post a larger image, just post the link.

arrow Please no posts such as, "OMG YURI SUX! YAOSI IS SOO MUCH HAWTER", or "I HATE YURI>.<". Not only is that offensive and completely ignorant, but I absolutely HATE that.

arrow I would be EXTREMELY happy if there were to be some ACTUAL intelligent disscusion going on. If anything, it's the whole reason I made this thread. xD

_+TERMINOLOGY+_

Here are some terms to make some good use to you in the Yuri-fandom.

Shujin no Tenshi
Shoujo-ai - 'Girl Love' Love between two girls. Generally a term used to classify a genre of manga/anime/etc. possessing a romantic plot based around two girls. Though this term should be considered outdated.

Yuri - 'Lily' This could be derived from two places. One would be where in 1970's Japan homosexuals were referred to as the Rose and Lily Clans/Gangs (Bara-zoku and Yuri-zoku), Bara being Rose (Bara is now used for 'real' japanese homosexual manga involving men). The second possibility is that Yuri was one of the first couples of this nature to be written about. Kei and Yuri, the original Dirty Pair.

Tachi - Literally meaning "Standing." This is the Japanese term for a 'butch' lesbian in a girlxgirl relationship. Examples are Utena, Haruka, and so on.

Neko - Literally meaning "Cat." This is the Japanese term for a 'femme' lesbian in a girlxgirl relationship. Examples are Anthy, Michiru, and so on. This could be considered the lesbian version of a 'uke'.

Loli - Also known as Lolicon. Pictures or stories pertaining to (usually sexual) relationships of young girls with other young girls, young boys, or adults.

Also Lolicon is not just young girls having realtionships with older adults or other young girls. It's acutally a style of fetish dress where teenagers and adult women dress like young girls.

And loli only pertains to young girls.

_+Tachi, Neko, and More About Yuri+_

Most of you are familiar to the terms "Seme" and "Uke". Tachi and Neko are some-what like the lesbian versions of these words. "Tachi" (meaning 'standing' in Japanese) is literally a man trapped inside a woman's body. "Neko" (meaning 'cat' in Japanese) is a term for the more girly lesbian of the couple.

Neko can be submissive or dominant. They always looks as girl.
Tachi is a girl that look like boy. Tachi girls are boys in girl's body.
Neko girls are like Chikane and Himeko. They are couple and both are neko.



In terms of Yuri...

The word shoujo-ai is not used in Japan. Also is not used more in some Yuri Fandoms (but some yuri-fans continue using that word).
Shoujo = Girl
Ai = Love, but Ai is a femenine name very popular in Japan.
So... Shoujo Ai = Girl Ai and NOT Girl's Love.
Example: Denei Shoujo Ai = Video Girl Ai. If you see the manga and the anime doesn't contain any girl x girl relationship.

Much like the term otaku, yuri, although originally a Japanese loanword, has undergone significant semantic drift. The precise difference between "yuri" and "shōjo-ai"' ranges from large to none, depending on the speaker.

In Japanese, the term is typically used to mean any attraction between girls in entertainment media, whether sexual or romantic, explicit or implied. For example, Futaba Channel's "yuri" board includes both hentai and non-hentai content rather than separating them. The term shōjo-ai is not usually found in this context outside of Western fandom. Neither term is generally used by Japanese lesbians describing themselves.

The word yuri literally means "lily", and is (like many flower names) a relatively common Japanese feminine name. In 1971, Itou Bungaku, as editor of Barazoku, a magazine geared primarily towards gay men, named gay men the "Barazoku," ie., "rose tribe" and lesbians "Yurizoku," the "lily tribe." From this, many doujinshi circles incorporated the name "Yuri" or "Yuriko" into yuri hentai dōjinshi. The "-zoku" or "tribe" portion of this word was subsequently dropped. (Variants of this theory may name specific characters, often Yuri of the Dirty Pair.)

In 2005 at Yuricon in Tokyo, Itou Bungaku spoke about the creation of the term "yuri". He, and the mangaka and writers who attended as guests spoke of reclaiming the term from a primarily hentai connotation to once again describing all media that represent love, desire, attraction and intimate emotional connections between women.

The wasei-eigo construction Girls Love (ガールズラブ gāruzu rabu but often rendered as English; occasionally spelled Girl's Love or Girls' Love, or abbreviated GL) is also seen.

The term shōjo-ai (少女愛) is scarcely, if ever, used with these meanings in Japan; instead, the terms shōnen-ai and shōjo-ai tend to denote *****. (Ironically, the English term "girllove" has this exact meaning and userbase, although the similar wasei-eigo Girls Love avoids both.)

None of these terms is generally used by Japanese lesbians in describing themselves, nor are they known by the general population. They are a form of fanspeak amongst manga fans. Japanese lesbians generally refer to themself by the loanword レズ (lez) or レスビアン (lesbian), or by using more specific gay slang such as nabe for a butch lesbian, similar to the English dyke.

That'd be very... interesting. I can imagine all the creative things the pot-ridden perverted mind of Mamimi combined with the outlandish confusing and very meaning full disturbing intentions of Haruko would create. It'd be like a hell full of awful, beautiful, horrific, astounding things. xD

I remember that! I really didn't understand what was going on in the picture, or what the point of the moment was. That's the biggest let down ( and also the biggest intrigue ) in FLCL is that there are so many things you're left to assume. Did Ninamori really love Naota or was that all just her attitude speaking; not counting the odd cat-crash = flying Naota into lips- oh wait no, I ment forehead - incident; which was hilarious. xD I dunno', just to mess with the typical assumptions of the aftermath of FLCL, I'm goign to say Ninamori and Mamimi eloped and got married. xD
