Welcome to this Panic at the disco thread. I would like to welcome all fans of the band, new and old, to this thread. This will be a place where I hope all fans of Panic at the disco are able to get along while discussing the band.

If you absolutely do not like Panic at the disco please take it to the Hate thread (Link) and do not flame in my thread. Thank you very much.

Rules
Please read and follow the rules as they will be enforced.

Follow Gaia ToS. They are the rules of the site and will be enforced. Going against the ToS will get you in trouble anywhere on this site and this thread will be no different.

Be Literate. Try to refrain from using chatspeak/1337. Not only does it make it more difficult for people to understand what you are saying, but it makes you look rather ignorant. A mistake every once in a while isn't the end of the world, but please try spell and punctuate correctly.

No Flaming. We all understand that Panic at the disco might not be one of your favorite bands, but please do not come in here and just flame them. If you wish to post some reasons for disliking them and then hang around to have an intelligent discussion, we'd be more than happy to have you.

No Spamming. This is a major issue and will not be tolerated here. We don't care what you had for breakfast. We also don't need nonsensical chatter. This is a discussion thread, therefore discuss anything about the band that you want

Do Not Stretch The Page. So, do not post anything that will stretch the page. Mainly, this has to do with pictures. If you really want to show us some specific picture, but it's too big, please resize it or just post a link to it. That way we can enjoy the picture as well as keep the thread neat.

No Quote Pyramids. Please don't continue to quote others. A few quotes every now and then are fine... just don't have giant quote pyramids. I think four quotes is as high as we ever need to go.

No Fighting. I didn't think that I'd need to explain this, but oh well. No fighting. This means no fighting with spammers, just explain the rules to them and drop it or ignore them all together. But most of all, no fighting amongst each other. If you create problems and disrupt everybodies enjoyment of the thread, you will be banned from it.

If you break any of these rules, you will be banned from the thread. How you may ask? Well, there is this nifty little feature called the ignore button. If you're placed on my ignore list, you will not be able to post in the thread... in essence, you will be banned from the thread. As harsh as this may seem, it will help keep spam down significantly and make the thread a much nicer place for the many rule-abiding people here.

Band Bio

It all started in the suburbs of Las Vegas when 12-year-old Ryan Ross asked his parents for a guitar for Christmas. Not to be outdone, neighborhood pal Spencer Smith begged his parents for a drum set so the duo could start jamming. "Really, from that first year [playing instruments], all we really did was cover Blink 182 songs," remembers Spencer, laughing. The band eventually matured, moved on from all the small things and recruited classmates Brent Wilson and Brendon Urie on bass and vocals, respectively.

With the final lineup now in place, the newly christened Panic! At The Disco (from a line in the Name Taken song "Panic" ) started practicing in Spencer's grandmother's living room and began crafting the songs that would eventually make their way onto A Fever You Can't Sweat Out. With their flair for experimental instrumentation and intimately observant lyrics, it wasn't long before the band sparked the interest of Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz, who brought the band to Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen, a label with a green thumb for new talent. "We really clicked with [Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen] and they understood what we wanted to do as a band," Ryan explains. "They gave us a lot of freedom to do what would make us happy with our music."

Soon after signing, things got serious and started moving forward at a rapid pace. Spencer and Brent finished high school through distance education; Brendon was taking classes during the day, practicing at night and barely scraping by his senior year; and Ryan decided to leave college at the end of his freshman year, causing a huge rift between him and his family. "When I told my dad I wanted to drop out and write music, he definitely flipped out. It was a battle between me being happy and doing what would make him happy." So minus the blessing of one father, the four friends packed up, left home for the first time and headed east to College Park, Maryland, to record their debut album with famed producer Matt Squire (Thrice, Northstar, The Receiving End Of Sirens).

"We didn't want to write a record that had 11 of the same songs on it," explains Ryan. In order to make sure that didn't happen, the band came up with the concept to divide the album in two halves: the first being futuristic, complete with drum machines and synthesizers, and the second being nostalgic, complete with Vaudevillian piano and accordion. "It was too extremes of influence being put next to each other: the most electronic music we have on the record and the most old, out-of-style music we have on the record." The band took pointers from some of their biggest�although not overt�influences: Third Eye Blind's melodic song structures (on "But It's Better When We Do" ), Queen's theatric instrumentation (on "Build God, Then We'll Talk" ) and Counting Crows' vivid and narrative lyrics (on "There's A Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought Of It Yet" ). "You wouldn't hear our record and say, 'Hmmm, these guys are influenced by Fleetwood Mac or Counting Crows, 'but those are our favorite bands," insists Spencer.

The band attracted considerable publicity in the leadup to the release of the album with Spin magazine naming them as their band of the day in early October 2005 (Link). The band has also increased in popularity due to their online presence with PureVolume having them consistently in their Top 10 signed band list and reaching #1 on the MySpace chart.

When their first album A Fever You Can't Sweat Out (2005) was released, it debuted at #112 on the Billboard 200 album charts, at #6 on the Billboard independent chart and at #1 on the Billboard heatseeker chart, with nearly 10,000 in first week sales (Link). The band started their first North American tour, supporting Acceptance and other acts in September 2005, as well as label mates The Academy Is... in the United Kingdom in January 2006.

Panic! at the Disco was featured on MTV's TRL along with The Academy Is... on January 17 2006, where they premiered their music video for "I Write Sins Not Tragedies". The group did not especially like the idea of appearing on TRL due to the fact a lot of fans would leave them because they went "mainstream". They posted a journal on their official website stating that it wasn't meant to happen, and they were against the idea and they apologize, but it ended up giving them a lot of publicity. The video for "I Write Sins Not Tragedies", featuring Lucent Dossier Vaudeville Cirque has an eerie circus wedding theme. It debuted at #10 on the TRL countdown, catapulting the album to the top of the Billboard independent chart and to #24 on the Billboard 200 in April 2006.

Well, it's an alternate universe. It's like, we're fish. We need water to breathe and if our fish tank breaks, we can't get our water, and we die. Well, I think the guy who's tank broke was somehow linked to the girl who picked up the fish. Like, they had a relationship or something. Then his tank broke and so he died, making people gather blah blah blah. The girl saw this and fainted, falling to the ground, which ended up in her having her own busted tank. So then the paramedic people (Panic!) arrived, put the guy and girl in a bath tub with water. Like how, if your fish tank broke at home, you'd put the fish in a bowl or whatnot. So then Panic! takes the people to the ocean which might be a metaphor for a hospital. Or death. Take your pick.

January 9th, 2008: The ! in Panic! at the disco's name was dropped, leaving them just Panic at the disco. In defense of their choice to drop the exclamation mark the boys stated that "It was never really a part of the name to [them]"
