A large thank you to those who tried, and it was a difficult decision, but I have picked the winning banner. I love it. MissCharmed made this banner, and all credit goes to her.

The Meaning of Purple

Chapter One

My favorite color is purple.

Now, I know what you are thinking. You are thinking that you do not care about my favorite color, because you do not know me. You are thinking that I should tell you something worth your time.

Well, my favorite color is very relevant to the story, so pay attention.

I was born seven years ago, in a little town known as Number Five. I also know what you are thinking now. You are thinking that I am seven years old, and therefore cannot talk this way or think this way.

You are sadly mistaken, so pay attention.

“Honey, go get your shoes on; we’re going to be late!” My mother yells quietly. Yes, that does sound like an oxymoron, but it is the only way I know to describe the way my mother yells. She yells with as much patience as someone who is trying to train a dog to play dead.

We are going to my grandmother’s funeral. Of course, I didn’t know her, so I don’t really care. In fact, the only thing I know about my deceased grandmother is that she passed away while reading a novel in her bed. I also know that she will be buried with that novel. It was my suggestion of course, because I know that she’d want to finish the novel. Even in death, it is my belief that she will still be able to read.

Also, it must be boring lying in a coffin for the rest of eternity. The novel will keep her company.

Have you ever heard the saying, “Ignorance is bliss”? Well, some people wonder why more people aren’t happy if that were the case. I don’t have to wonder about it though, because I know the answer.

Will I tell you the answer, you ask? Of course I will, but that doesn’t come into play for a while and I want to keep you thinking. So I will wait.

You also ask what it has to do with the story, and tell me with your unique brain power that I am once again telling you something irrelevant.

Well, it has everything to do with the story, so pay attention.

My favorite color is purple, and I am going to my grandmother’s funeral.

Have you ever noticed that the word ‘funeral’ has the word ‘fun’ inside of it? Either it is some form of irony, or a powerful God is trying to tell us something. I believe that a powerful God is trying to tell us to have fun at a funeral, because death is only the beginning.

So, grabbing my mother’s left hand, we head toward the funeral, and I am thinking about how to have fun at a funeral.

Let’s go have fun.

*Squeal.* YAY! It was wonderful! I honestly don't know if there's anything I can critique-- I love the character and their attitude. (Though I do wonder, is it a boy or a girl?) Your grammar is wonderful, and-- oh! I'm just so happy right now. T____T I certainly want to read more, and do hope that you continue with this!

EDIT: Please forgive me for my lack of helpful information, and reaction which may or may not be dubbed as "n00b-like". It's just-- wow! I really like it!
I don't know if this was intentional, but reading it once made me confused. Rereading each sentence made things more clear though. I think I could get lost in your narrator's thoughts.

The fun in funeral part reminds me of a her majesty song I heard not long ago. =)
Thank you for the comments, and yes, that type of confusion was intentional. Hope you all continue to read. ^_^

Chapter Two

My favorite color is most certainly not black.

Of course, you already knew that my favorite color is purple. What you don’t know is that black is my least favorite color. In fact, black is so far on the bottom of my colors list that it is not even on it. Black is not even a color.

Everyone around me does not seem to know that black is not an attractive shade, though, because everyone around me is wearing it. Black dresses, black pants, black shirts, black hair ties, black sweaters. I would not be surprised if a random person took off his clothes to reveal black underwear.

The mental picture is disgusting, so I hope that does not happen.

I do not think these people realize that a funeral is meant for fun. I see two really old people with their heads bowed and tears streaming down their faces. Where is the fun in crying?

Unless they are crying tears of joy, because my grandmother has now begun a new life and is probably in the process of reading a very satisfying novel. Although, I do hope that my grandmother reads it slowly. She has a long time to lie there, after all.

My mother pushes me toward the podium in front of the hole in the ground where my grandmother is asleep, and tells me to say something.

“Go say how nice your grandmother was,” She whispers.

I did not even know my grandmother, so how can I tell all of these people in black that she was a nice person? My mother must want me to lie.

Walking up to the podium, the preacher there gives me a comforting smile and helps me stand on a chair. I am such a short seven-year-old.

Everyone stops what they were doing to turn and look at me, and suddenly I realize that I do not have anything to say about my grandmother. I did not know her.

“I didn’t know her,” I say. I see my mother’s eyes widen out of the corner of my eye. She must have expected me to lie.

“But I do know that black is not a color. Thank you.” I gesture for the preacher to let me off the chair and go back to where my mother is standing. She looks at me with disappointment, and I do not care. I did not lie, and I am proud of myself.

So, I think I was correct in that a funeral is meant for fun. It would have been fun if everyone else had known that little tidbit, anyway. I cannot have a party with everyone around me wearing a shade and crying. Have you ever tried that? It is not easy.

Now, I bet you are wondering what my grandmother’s funeral has to do with my story. I bet you are wondering when I am going to get to the interesting part, where I explain why purple is my favorite color. I also bet you are wondering how that can be interesting at all.

Well, you will just have to wait and see, so pay attention.

I live in a very small house. My mother works at a pet shop. She is the person there who cleans out the cages and feeds the animals. It is a fun job, in my opinion, but my mother does not find it rewarding enough. Sure, she helps to keep the animals alive, but she says she does not make enough money and wants to work somewhere else.

When I become old enough, I will own a pet shop, and I will find it rewarding. I like the pets at my mother’s pet shop. Especially the baby ciphers.

Oh, you do not know what a cipher is? How sad for you, I will have to explain.

First, though, I am going to go wish my grandmother a fond farewell. At least until she starts a new life, just like I did.

Oh, did you not know? I bet you are wondering what I am rambling on about. I bet you are wondering why I keep leaving you hanging. I could even bet you are wondering when I am going to actually answer the questions I keep making you think of.

Well, you are going to keep wondering, so pay attention.

“I can’t believe you said that, and don't step on that crack!” My mother says as we go into our small house. She moves me slightly so that I will not step on one of the cracks of the sidewalk that leads into our house. She was wearing a frown, and I wait patiently as she rants about how what I said made people feel even worse. It is not my fault that people do not know how to properly hold a funeral.

Lying in bed, I toss and turn. Something is bothering me, and I cannot figure out what it is. Sure, my mother had gone to bed a little over an hour ago, and I was supposed to have been asleep three hours ago, but I could simply not sleep.

Have you ever wondered what your dreams mean? You have really odd dreams, and they always seem to mean absolutely nothing, and you still wonder if it could mean something. My dreams, I know, mean something. I do not have to wonder what they mean.

My favorite color is purple, and my dreams are always seen through purple-tinted windows. My dreams have everything to do with the story, so pay attention as I delve into one of them.

You might be surprised by what a seven-year-old can dream.
This is... wow... Extrodinairily amazing. I love it... Pleeeeease feed me more. *Sniff*
Wow. I love it. I just...wow.
Thank you both for the comments. ^_^

It's gone onto the third page, so I have reason for this.

Bump.
I'm going to tell you right now that I only read the first little bit.

The thing that is really bothering me is that the narrator is telling me what I'm thinking, and telling me to pay attention. This person doesn't know what I'm thinking, and I'm already paying attention. This makes it sort of seem like the readers are stupid or something.

I don't know, it's just really bothering me.
pretty good... make an update soon.
I love this. It doesn't seem like something many people could pull off - that amount of randomness but you did
I'm pretty much engrossed already. I can see you have talent.

If this were a book I'd definately be reading it and not putting it down.

Keep it up! Or get it published ninja
I'm enjoying this. There's enough randomness to keep it interesting, and enough "I'll explain later"s to keep you guessing. Very good. Great, in fact. Keep it up and I'll give you a cookie.
