Almost three months since my last update, and we've seen some interesting progressions and degressions here on Gaia in regards to the subject at hand; Fantasy items and themes.
As you all know, the donation items continue to be the place to look for anything fantasy-ish on Gaia, including a Katana, the Elegent Veil, and of course, Gwee the baby dragon. whee
In terms of the clothing updates, though, things have just been depressing, in my opinion. Now, don't get me wrong. I like the current item update. The colorfulness is a great plus for people building outfits, and the affordability is nice too, for Gaians old and new. But...once again, we're at skirt/shirt/pants/shoes. The most 'unique' of the sets is the Missus set, with it's fluffy dresses and bolero-cut jackets, which will make for some interesting costume building. With tons of feedback each day asking for Egyptian, Rennaisonce, and other period or fantasy-esque clothing, why release something as un-demanded for as the Anti-Fashion set?
As an aside, I'd like to note that the Tentacle set, while not in my interest scope, is a nice "WTSH-" addition to the site. I want to see more crazy and outlandish oufits like that available. If they can do tentacles, they can do Centaurs and Mermaids, after all....
In other news, as you all know we got a site update that shows Gaia is nearing what appears to be an Alien Invasion in time for Halloween. Cross your fingers and show your support, and let's show them that this is something that we're interested in!

It's been a while since I brought this up to the first page; mainly because I was waiting for the forum update and the next item update before I put forth anymore feedback.
Well, it appears that this month there is no store update, just the new starter sets. And the forum changeover has taken place and thrown most people's worlds into chaos. xp
I'm not going to spend time talking about the white space or the navigation changes. This thread's feedback focuses on fantasy, and my feedback will relate to that.
It's already been mentioned in many threads: The new layout puts ZERO emphasis on fantasy elements. The new starter sets are all modern clothing. The new site banner has ordinary kids in it.
There is no magic left on Gaia. You may as well call this site "Earth, without the whole face-to-face thing to deal with."
I don't visit myspace so I can't draw comparisons...but it seems to me that the emphasis of the site's layout is to spoonfeed new people the features the admins emphasize: Profiles and games, instead of the features that the USERS want to emphasize: Dressing up, battling, roleplaying.
How many people posted in the last month demanding casino items because they weren't given to us when they were promised?
How many users posted demanding Profiles 2.0 when it wasn't given to us when promised? About a twentieth of the amount who wanted casino items.
When I look at this new Gaia, I see a place for 14 year olds to post their pictures and add to their friendslist (which I understand is the "myspace" comparison). To find emphasis on Gaia's worldmap or storyline you need to search and hunt around.
And how long has it been since you added more towns or places to explore, anyways?
The wonderment of the Gaian "world" has been deemphasized in favor of profile-building and becoming a teen hangout.
I'm very dissapointed, because I think this thread has shown that there are people-a LARGE contingent-who want to see a stronger fantasy base in Gaia: More roleplaying and interaction with the CHARACTERS and WORLD of Gaia.
Will we ever get these things?

First off, thank you to everyone who has put down their item/storyline/NPC suggestions. Have you been wondering if the admins are listening? I think the developments they presented at Fanime prove that they are!
For reference, the Fanime discussion thread is here, in the Gaian Community Discussion:
http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13944867
Just take a look at what was presented:
-The Battle System
-New NPCs with an obvious fantasy theme
-New clothing suggestions
-More fantasy RPG-like interactivity in Towns
These are all things we have longed to see since the days of 2003. Keep the suggestions coming! For starters, I notice that there are no antho-oriented NPCs, which is something many people wanted.
What else do you want to see? A revolution of Gaia could be right around the corner!

The new Donation items are out, and it's obvious that the designers are listening to us!
Everyone who has seen the 'old Gaia' pictures recognizes that the Sun Staff is definitely based off of those old designs. And, as has been brought up often in this thread, Sci-Fi (like the G-Bot) falls under the realm of fantasy. 3nodding
I hope that the next store item update will give us more coordinates for these pieces.
So what should we do now? KEEP THE SUGGESTIONS COMING! You have the ear of the administration, so speak up! Item suggestions, storyline ideas, NPC suggestions, show what ideas you have to bring fantasy into Gaia.

4-21-06]Thank you once again to everyone who has posted their opinions and feedback!
As everyone knows, this last week there was an item update on Gaia that received positive reviews from the users on Gaia-the Pirate item set. People have been requesting for three years that the administration release a set with a pirate theme.
Although I can't personally attest to it, I feel that everyone who posted in this thread mentioning what they wanted to see helped to bring this update about at this time. As you know, we already got our 'main' update earlier this month-the poorly received apron/cooking set. Did the negative feedback and the overwhelming request for fantasy lead to this second item update this month? I believe it did.
However, please don't rest on your laurels for one item update. I feel that what I've posted in this thread in the first post is still valid. I want to see a stronger fantasy slant on Gaia as a whole-that is my opinion and it is my feedback to the administration as a user and a donator to the site. If you agree, if you disagree, if you feel that you have something important to say about the topic, please post. Your feedback IS being heard, and you CAN help to shape Gaia.

A Big thank you to everyone who has posted their feedback!
So far, over 1,200 Gaians have voted on the poll above to say that yes, they want to see Gaia have a stronger fantasy slant to it. From people who joined at the beginning in 2003 and have seen the site change over the years, to people who have only been on Gaia for a few brief weeks.
When I launched this feedback thread I had no idea of the warm outpouring not only of support, but helpful suggestions and creative ideas it would cause. There has been no flaming and no debate in over 37 pages of feedback.
Please, administrators and developers, take notice! The Gaian users appreciate all of the work that you put into the site. We know that you are constantly brainstorming and looking for new ways to attract the eye of the people. We are reminding you in this thread that you have forgotten (probably not intentionally) one of the primary reasons many of us joined. We are asking you to take a look at Gaia and see where you can place more fantasy elements.
We would like to see them in the clothing we wear. In the storylines we read. In the NPCs we interact with. And in the games we play. Please, take some time and peruse through the comments and suggestions the users have put in this thread. I guarantee it will be worth your time. 3nodding
Respectfully,
Giabrenna

Okay, this is some oldbie feedback, so I hope I don't come off as doddering and grumpy... wink
When I joined Gaia back in November of 2003, there was one main attraction that made me register on the site. On the main page was a great banner depicting several Gaian characters dressed in traditional RPG roles. There was a Cleric, a Priestess, a Warrior Girl, and a Swordsman, if I recall correctly.
"Cool!" I thought, and registered with an appropriate fantasy-ish name.
Since then, quite obviously, Gaia has gone in a completely different direction then the "huge interactive anime/fantasy rpg" that it was trying to be when I joined.
Now, this isn't negative feedback on things like customizable profiles and other features. Those things are nice icing and obviously there are some people who are attracted to the site for those reasons. However, I came to Gaia for roleplay and fantasy fun, and those things have been ignored and shoved by the wayside in the last two years.
-Clothing and item updates: Is there any update in the last two years that didn't have a set of jeans in it? I've waited patiently for fantasy clothing to come out-ANY fantasy clothing. Elven clothes. Clerical items. Warrior armor. However, instead of these sets, we get set after set after set after set of 'modern' clothing. How many of the guy's clothing sets consist of "3 pairs of jeans, 3 t-shirts, matching shoes?" Since the Musketeer set came out in 2004, there hasn't been much in the way of set released that have a strictly fantasy/adventure theme to them.
-The world of Gaia: This is a storyline/setting nitpick. The first NPCs on Gaia (Ian, Sasha, Gambino...) were dressed in clothing appropriate to a fantasy genre setting. Since then, everyone else has popped up in modern clothes. Since the opening of Aekea, it seems clear that there's no room for magic or fantasy characters like catgirls or winged folks on Gaia. At the New Year's ball, even in the background all of the characters just looked like normal modern folks (albiet dressed in some silly costumes).
-The Battle System: Oh yes, I had to get to this. Like every other patient person who joined in '03, I've waited YEARS for any indication of a battle system. Finally, we have a sword, and it's a very nice sword at that. 3nodding But I'm still hoping very much so for a traditional, Final Fantasy III style battle system that will include things like spells and elemental attacks. Is any of this even valid anymore?
Whenever I check out site feedback, I always see dozens of suggestions for fantasy-oriented clothing, items, and features. Kole_Locke's thread about 'faerie rares' has endure for at least 4 months. Suggestions for Elven (non-holiday themed) clothes happen everyday, as do requests for Ninja and Pirate themed sets. DAILY, these suggestions appear.
Yet, every update we get another set of jeans and a t-shirt, each storyline update pushes into a modern setting, and the battle system looks further off every day. Will the thousands and thousands of fantasy fans on Gaia ever get a break? sad
