Gameplay

This game appears to me as a combination of Sim Earth and E.V.O. However, it allows for much more customization than most games could ever hope to achieve.
Wikipedia
Spore will be a simulation that "ranges from the cellular level to the galactic level". It will consist of several long phases, each with its own style of play. In his original Game Developers Conference speech, Will Wright likened the style of game-play of each phase to an existing game.

1. Molecular Phase, similar to Tetris
2. Cellular Phase, similar to Pac-Man
3. Creature Phase, Diablo
4. Tribal Phase, Populous
5. City Phase, similar to Wright's own SimCity
6. Civilization Phase, Risk and Civilization
7. Terraform Phase, similar to Wright's own SimEarth.
8. Galactic Phase, sandbox gameplay, (a.k.a. UFO stage or Invasion), with some elements reminiscent of Destroy All Humans!, as well as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, with some elements from 2001: A Space Odyssey. DICE 2007 referred to it as similar to Masters of Orion.

I could try and explain it as best as I could, but why do that when you could watch it in action for yourself?
here's the full version if you have an hour to waste http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-775656482294094003
Here's the 36 minute version (recommended)

It doesn't start off very impressive, but keep watching, it gets better. I know it's over 35 minutes long, but it's worth it.

Here is an interview with Will Wright about the game that clears some things up.

Part 2 http://www.gamingsteve.com/archives/2005/06/gaming_steve_ep_11.php

Here is a newer video which shows recently added features.

Latest News: Spore Is Out!
Here are some questions for anyone who has seen the video.
- Do you want this game?
- What kind of species would you make?
- How much do you think it will be?
- What previously unmentioned features would you like to see in Spore?

My creature Ideas.
A race of intelligent bird people, with large cities and modern technology.

A race of two legged reptiles. They are bony, with long sharp claws for hunting prey, and protruding spike out of most joints like the jaw and elbows.

A race of small black creatures resembling dogs. They have incredibly sharp teeth and powerful jaws. They also have a short digestive tract and a high metabolism so they can quickly process food. Because of this, they are thin, and almost resemble an origami structure. There are also few of them, because in large groups, they would use up their food supply far too quickly.

Chocobos

And of course, dragons.

Also The Spore Guild. The regulars of this thread should check it out. More literate members could help us improve it.
this game is amazing. the level of detail is insane. the guy made a damn carebear 3nodding i just wish i had a pc the could run that thing crying

Anyone who has already seen the video, thoughts? Do you want this game? What kind of species would you make? How much do you think it will be? PC only?(sure seems that way, but you never know with this next generation arriving)

I already have a couple of ideas. Like a race of birds with cities and technology. Or some dragons, cause dragons are always cool.
i would need it to come out on the console. was it just me or did he say the the game has some MMO qualitys in it.

PS you should warn that that video is 36 min long

And yes, I believe he did. Bieng able to travel to, and interact with, other player's worlds would just make the game that much more rewarding.
Although a downside to this would be if another advanced player flew by and blew up your planet and you had to start all over again.

yea taht would make it very hard for new players to make in the game after a while
I don't think it'll work that way though. I think what it does is allows you to download another person's solar system into your computer. So, you can interact with their creatures, but anything you do will only affect things on your computer, not theirs. So if you blow up their planet, it will only count in your game. They'll still have it.
MY LORD!!! THAT IS SOOO ******** AWEXOME!!! Just had to get that out of my system. In all honesty, it'll be for the PC only...I doubt it'll get to the home consoles in the same style it is. I thought the CarBear was a nice one, ButtFace was another one...

Sort of. What happens is that the other creatures/worlds that are present in your game are downloaded from the master server of everyone's created stuff. In that way, you can see stuff from other people's games (and interact w/ it), but it doesn't change at all in theirs.
Welcome to the discussion amaya. Yes, that does seem to be how it works.

I've been wondering about wings, as I would like to make a civilization of bird people, and a race of dragons. No birds were shown in the video though. I would hope the ability to grow wings wouldn't be left out of the game.

Edit: And now, wings have been confirmed. Yay.
The moment I read about this game afew weeks back I knew that I had to have it, it just looks.. amazing. You start off as a single celled amoeba and can end up as a civilization which has conquered the universe! As for your idea on wings I didn't see anything from anything I've read, but the editor seems to encorporate a great variety of different options for growing limbs so I don't see why you couldn't sprout wings?
Looks interesting. ninja
I am REALLY gonna need that new PC now.
