Okay, so what is it?

To quote the front page:

Front Page! 8D

Ghosts of the past are people, normally of magical quality, who have died a horrible, painful, or wrongful death. Because of this, and the spell Matilda had cast so long ago, their soul was trapped in a wand, which related to them and their powers. As a result, they were trapped halfway between life and halfway between death until their wand was unearthed and brought to life.

My concept is that of a Drow, a dark elf with natural magical abilities. Read on to find out more about Zasalamel, his Past, and through the layouts of each stage he will go through once reborn into this world!

The Basics

Name: Zasalamel Felan-Surugata
Alias: Zah, Kidlet
Gender: Male
Race: Drow
Guardian: Neveah Surugata
Hair Colour: White
Eye Colour: Lavender with a thin ring of gray around the pupil
Skin Tone: Obsidian
Distinctive Marks: A pair of horizontal white circles under both his eyes, plus a claw-like mark under the right eye, between the circles.
Other Markings: Dark purple spider marking between his shoulder blades
General likes: Spiders, Noodles, Night time, Weapons, Fighting, Magic and Belts.
General dislikes: Sunlight, Being Male, Ropes, Snakes.
Hobbies: Sparring, Studying Magic, Wandering, Cleaning Neveah's house.
Abilities:

Infrared Vision: Due to the Drow living underground, they have the ability to see in infrared, meaning they pick up heat patterns from anything, and can detect living from inanimate objects. Being Drow, Zasalamel will have this ability naturally.

Shadow Ball: Every Drow possesses this as an innate ability. This ability allows him to summon a ball of dense black shadows to disorient his opponent, either for preparing a surprise attack or evading an attack. The more this is used and practiced the bigger the ball will be and the longer it can be held in place for. No infrared vision of any sort may penetrate this ball; when you're inside, you can't see out, and when you're outside, you can't see in.

Sword Play: During the role play, Zasalamel will begin taking fighting lessons once he reaches his kid stage (though not very often until it becomes his main study during his Teenage stage). He will become adept at Swordplay, but like everyone he has his faults.

Magic: Aside from his innate talents, Zasalamel will also study magic once he reaches his kid stage. As a kid, Magic will be his main study, but it will get shifted into secondary study later on. Any magic he learns during the role play will be documented and role played out. =D

Other notes on Zasalamel: Light in any way hurts his eyes, due to his infrared vision being his primary form of vision. If he is outside and it is daytime, he'll find ways to cover his eyes. As he grows older, his daylight sight will get better, and he'll be able to shift from infrared to common light easier. However, even as an Adult he won't be able to stay outside in the sun for an entire day without resting his eyes in darkness or wearing some form of eye protection.

The Backstory

According to records, Zasalamel was the Second boy of House Felan. However, according to actual history, Zasalamel was the third boy born to Matron Shurnel Felan...the boy born of disgrace. In the Drow culture, it was law that the third male child born to any one female Drow was to be sacrificed to the spider-goddess Lloth, lest the female be put out of Lloth's favor and in turn have the female's house disgraced. Luckily for Zasalamel, his brother Zabad, the real second boy, was murdered the day he was born by the eldest and First boy, Sahar. This turn of events spared Zasalamel's life, and he continued living as the Second boy of House Felan...though his Matron considered him a favourite of Lloth, due to the fact he was allowed to survive by chance alone.

Like all males in the Drow culture, Zasalamel grew up with a reverence to the females, who were the beloved of Lloth. He learned early on that disobeying a female meant severe punishment, and that punishment was always sure to leave scars. Unfortunately, little Zasalamel learned this the hard way when he accidentally interrupted his eldest sister as a toddler...and again with his Matron perhaps a week later, though he received random thrashings for even glancing at his female family members when they were in a bad mood. Eventually, he learned to fear the women, and to not make them cross by any means, even if it meant dropping everything he was doing for a mundane task.

Being male in a female-run culture was difficult; you either had to become a master swordsman, a wizard, or a consort in order to have any say without drastic punishment. However, becoming a wizard was near impossible for most males, a swordsman required endless training, and being a consort meant you could be killed at any moment, should your matron tire of you. For Zasalamel, he was first chosen for the path of a wizard once his Matron detected unusually high magical powers within him. He was sent to the Magic School at the young age of ten where he trained with the best in order to become the best. Later on in his early teenage-hood (being around twenty five years old), he broke from the mainstream magic to focus on battle magic, where he was introduced to scimitars, ball-and-chains as well as a variety of other weapons. Now studying both magic and battle tactics, he learned to combine the two as well as how to properly use and execute the double attacks on a real battlefield. As a sort of exit test, Zasalamel made his first kill at the very young age of thirty five; his kill was a fellow classmate, a male Drow from his neighbouring house. It was a big Drow lesson; Kill or be killed...and if one must kill, make it look like an accident. It was also a lesson Zasalamel never forgot. Sent back to House Felan as Weapon Master after completing his training in battle magic, Zasalamel quickly became a desired male; especially once word of his extraordinary talents got around to the surrounding Houses. He was the Weapon Master of House Felan, he was nearly a wizard...that meant he had the best genes to pass on.

A year out of his schooling found him as Consort to Matron Auril of the House Bakhur, his own Matron giving him over due to the fact his being Auril's consort made his own house, House Felan, raise higher in the House rankings, and therefore closer to the god Lloth herself. Over the course of a century, Zasalamel fought in many raids, became a veteran male, and on top of this he sired three daughters and a son, the latter whom he became very fond of after the boy had completed his weapons training. In Drow society, it was heavily frowned upon to act remotely like a human family did...and that was just what Zasalamel was doing with his son Bharaket.

His fondness for his son was naturally discovered, and after a century of being a wonderful consort, he'd embarrassed Matron Auril. So embarrassed in fact, that she had him and the boy taken away to be sacrificed to Lloth, just to make up for this most criminal offense.

Hearing of his fate, he did something that was even more shameful than doting on one's own child; and that was run away. Taking his son with him, Zasalamel fled from the Underdark, fending off any Drow that dare come close. Unfortunately, the only way to escape the Underdark is to go up into the surface world...and that was just what he did. In this however, Zasalamel went alone. Upon seeing the first rays of light, Bharaket panicked and ran back into the tunnels; this was naturally his downfall, as their pursuers caught up with the boy. He hadn't realized he was alone until he was deep within a forest, in a clearing bathed in sunlight.

The sunlight's painful rays blinded him and stung his obsidian skin...but that was nowhere near the pain he felt in his heart when he realized he was alone, that he had failed...and that he'd lost his precious son forever. He collapsed in the clearing, a black spot within a bed of bright green.

When he awoke it was night, and he was securely bound spread-eagle on the ground; and his captors were rogue surface elves, their skin pale and their hair fair. They spoke to him in their tongue, but he could tell by their tone that they were nowhere near friendly. Too heartbroken to fight back, he merely ignored the elves, and let them do to him as they wished, a lifeless expression in his face and in his lavender eyes.

For being Drow, the surface elves tortured him. At night they replaced the ropes that bound him with wet pieces of leather, which would dry during the day, growing tighter and tighter until they tore into his wrists; and each day the leather hide would be replaced, free to dig further until his wrists were nearly worn down to the bone. Naturally that wasn't all they did to him; they impaled his hands and feet with daggers, twisting them slowly each time the leather was replaced. That, combined with the blinding sunlight and the way the sun burned his sensitive skin, was maddening. Day in and Day out, he cried for a release, he begged whatever god may be out there to just end it for him, to kill him and get it over with. Eventually the elves, having had their fill of torturing him, answered his prayers. Murmuring what he thought might have been a spell of condemnation, they pierced his heart with one of his own scimitars, and his painful and unforgiving world thankfully collapsed into darkness.

Zasalamel's soul hung in limbo, free from physical pain but suffering for eternally for doing nothing more than existing...

The Basics

Name: Neveah-Surugata
Alias: Liah, Nee.
Gender: Female
Race: Butterfly Humanoid
Occupation: Traveling Folklorist and Part-time Novelist
Charges: None; Neveah lives alone.
Hair Colour: Bright blue, fading into purple tips
Eye Colour: Aqua
Skin Tone: Very Pale Caucasian
Distinctive Marks: Long Antennae out of the top of her head, A set of Butterfly wings, gloves of 'fur' on her forearms and very slanted, narrow eyes. She has five earrings in each of her fork-tipped ears, and three golden rings around each of her antennae.
Other Markings: Three little claw marks under both her eyes, and patches of brown skin on her arms, ribs/stomach, and legs.
General likes: Butterflies, Daylight, Shrubbery, Foliage, Being around people, Traveling, Brightly coloured things, and anything that is shaped like a flower.
General dislikes: The cold, Fighting, Spiders, Snakes and garbage.
Hobbies: Gardening, Writing, Dancing, Reading, Staring into space.
Abilities:

Shifting: Neveah, being a Butterfly Humanoid, has the ability to turn into a butterfly that is no bigger than a normal monarch. In her butterfly form, she is predominately blue and black.

Dancing: In both Humanoid and Butterfly form, Neveah is a beautiful dancer. She in entrancing to watch, and can easily silence a crowd by dance alone. She has a variety of dances, but many of them are used to give a calming effect. She can also dance to put someone to sleep, to reassure them, and rarely, she has a dance of sadness that may bring one to tears. If she dances the latter, however...she does it when she is alone, for it is a way for her to cope.

Personality: Keeping to the stereotype of 'Social Butterfly', Neveah could usually be found around a big group of people, talking with complete strangers, or perhaps being flighty with the people she knows. If not in a big group, she'll usually be outside of her small three bedroom house, surrounded by other butterflies and either gardening, dancing, sitting at her laptop or sitting with an old fashioned pen and paper, either writing a story or a report on the newest folklore she discovered. Neveah can be anywhere from silly to sarcastic to serious, though the former two are much more common than the latter. She can also be rather flutter-brained, meaning she'll stand there for a few minutes, start going towards one thing, then change her mind and go in a different direction, and then another...and so on and so forth until she finds what she wants to do. A kind soul, she can't help but try to help the people around her...unless she's working as a folklorist, in which case she detaches herself and lapses into such a period of seriousness that might seem scary to most people, her boss included. She has absolutely no idea on how to deal or raise children, and she lives alone, aside from the random butterflies that dance around the house.

The Backstory

Neveah Surugata came from a large family, as most butterflies do. Being the youngest of that clutch, she never really learned how to deal with younger siblings or children in general, because she was that baby sibling that everyone had to watch out for, whether it be for protection or for protecting oneself from being pounced on.

She joined a dance school when she was six and absolutely loved it; she continued dancing until she was nineteen, when she instead found writing to be her calling. Keeping her dancing as a hobby now instead of a job (she was a dance instructor for a year), she focused on writing. Early on she was drafted to work as an assistant to a Folklorist, where she traveled to various places and gathered information on their myths and legends, when wrote about them. Neveah loved this work, and she put as much soul into documenting folklore that she had dancing when she was younger. When the folklorist retired, she took over his job, though she herself still has no assistant to speak of.

As an assistant Folklorist, Neveah never spent much time at home, and therefore never had a real home. Once she became a real folklorist she bought herself a small, three-bedroom home on the outskirts of Barton, closer to the lake than anything. Even though she has a house to call her own, she still disappears for months on end for work.

She lives on her own with no mate or child to care for, though she does have a variety of butterflies that seem to follow her around, or stay around her house. Though aside from the constant traveling and lore researching, Neveah leads a rather calm life, and she wouldn't have it any other way.

Basics

Appearance
+ Their hair colour is traditionally Grey or White
+ The common eye colour is red, and a drow with lavendar or yellow eyes is very rare.
+ Their skin is usually obsidian, but can also be grey. Albino Drows are Moon Drows, and cannot be found in Menzoberranzan.
+ All drow have slight frames, and depending on their city, can either be very tall, or be of medium height.
+ Once they chose a preferred style of clothing, they'll do their best to not alter it too drastically. If they do alter it, it'll be for convienience alone.

Drow Society
+ Females are Superior, Males are Inferior
+ The Houses are run by the head female, or Matron, and their house rank shows their standing and power within the Drow city. The lower the house number, the closer they are to Lloth, and the higher they are in her favor (Example: House Felan's house rank was four, but dropped down to seven after Zasalamel's disgrace ruined them).
+ The main rule is kill or be killed, and don't get caught doing it.
+ Crossing an angry Female's path can lead to a random lashing.
+ They are strict; even a mundane slip of the tongue can lead to punishment.

Religion
+ Lloth is the Spider Queen, and the ruling Diety of the Drow.
+ Only Females can become Clerics and Priestesses.
+ Sacrifice is best; Torture is loved. Lloth loves pain and death, and that is just what the Priestesses give her. Even a family member killing another family member makes her giddy with glee.

Their Cities
+ Drow live underground. It is frequently called 'Underdark'. Zasalamel was from the main city of Menzoberranzan.
+ In Menzoberranzan, there is a 'clock' of sorts in the middle of the city. A wizard heats up the pillar with magic at the start of each day, and as the day goes on the pillar cools down, therefore the infrared dims. The dimmer the stone's red is, the later in the day it is.

Relationships with other races
+ They despise every race, especially surface elves. Naturally, the Surface elves feel the same way, and each race will murder any member of the other race if they are unfortunate enough to be caught. This explains why the Elves tortured Zasalamel.
+ Drow have a bad habit of raiding the tunnels of Dwarves, as the Dwarven tunnels are often indirectly linked to the tunnels to the Underdark.

It was hard >.> I've been studying since 7th grade. I'm in 11th now.
Wow. xD

I studied it for like, six months at most, back when I had a female drow character. n.n

I had such a hard time chosing between a male or female drow, because they're so different, but both would be so much fun to play. D: I went for Male, because he's adorable.

^_^ oh yes. He sounds awesome.

Mmm, I had a female drow char once. Her name was >.> Ssindossa
