Here's to you, poets...
here's to the night.

Eighth Round Results

Foreword: In this contest, despite the warning in the first post, I found several poems relating to LOVE. As I said, this is a difficult subject to do well - including style, content, and impact. This did affect the judging on a rather large scale, although careful consideration was given to all poems equally.

Love poems posted in my contests must shine above - focusing not so much on the personal to any great extent, unless they can speak to a larger audience: They must be abstract, broader, and more compelling than the average "this is all about me" type. And preferably written in the third person to prove that point.

Cheers!

First Place - Barboxacon - Retrograde

I found this subject to be not only interesting, but one with a serious message to writers everywhere, whatever genre. Something I have thought about often, thinking, "Really, what is there left to be said?".

I often, and with some surprise, find myself pleasantly proven wrong. There are things left to be said, to varying degrees.

Second Place - Tie - Sylphi - Down Below

Rich with vivd imagery and great phraseology, I found this one charming, delightful, and tinged with sad nostalgia. Another one that touched me on a personal level... I wonder if it was for different reasons.

I really must post in the next thread my opinions about contest judging.

Second Place - Tie - cygne sauvage - Lyric

And yet another surprise. Short and sweet. How refreshing that so much can be said with so few words, and of course I am fond of a minimilist style.

I was surprised (yet again) to find some of my own thoughts and feelings verbalized so well. Powerful message, nicely done. I do advise (again!) that the first person references be done away with.

Third Place - Tie - Indigo Streetlight - The stranger

Another one with a different and interesting subject. Although it could do without the "Pa-tings", I found it strongly suggestive of old movies and daydreams. Some great words and phrases, evoked emotion, and good pacing definitely saw this one through.

Third Place - Tie - This Be Richard - Death of a Soviet Ballerina

And yet another surprise. Short and sweet, again, it evoked some memories for me, but, again, I wonder if they are the same as intended... Not that it matters.

Honourable Mentions:

Aethiana - Hope

I liked this one because (mainly) of the comparisons and outstanding contrast - leaving one to wonder in which way the writer really leans. Of course, that may seem obvious in the last stanza... But you just never know, do you?

Leonis - PFD

While this may seem simplistic, I know that Leonis is going the extra mile in terms of effort, asking for opinions and critiques, taking them seriously, and working hard to improve as a poet.

sinonyx - Artistic Endeavor (Sooner)

An interesting message that may be applied to other things, this one was gentle and sweet. It could be improved by losing the "I" and "my", perhaps - Knowing better, hands come back..."

serpenteyes - Darkroom

Intense, great phrases and powerful words, strong message. The one reason this rates only an Honourable Mention is because it is clearly a first draft. I know this because I have seen her finished projects, and this needs some cleaning up that I know she is perfectly capable of. See me, Seyes, if you want specifics.

A few of my favorite phrases and lines from these entries:

its teeth grasping the stone

the lies that were true i'd never know.

everything was nothing. but nothing was beautiful.

Frolicking like the horses that live somewhere out in the blue sea.

And some love football

Tangles like branches on a rickety tree

You Me and the Radio

Maybe you think... it's only sometimes

Afterthoughts: I canna stress enough my advice to visit OP/L for advice and critiques before submitting your work here. Its free! It may be harsh, but you can take it if you are willing to be open-minded and consider seriously all comments and suggestions made, except the obvious idiotic ones that are just meanly said. Ignore those completley, do not even answer them!

Also! PLEASE give more thought to punctuation, including capitalizations and the use of commas, periods, elipses points, and dashes. Punctuation is crucial to flow and understanding, not to mention telling a reader that you are more than merely literate. Of course, often these things are purposely vague, but if it affects a reader's opinion serious thought should be given to change.

Forgive any typos!

Come now. NOW! Hahahaha.

This means you!
spots reservable? I hope so, because if so, I plan on reserving one!

Here is my entry...

The Ring

The ring on your finger
wraps and twists its way
around you, protecting you,
its teeth grasping the stone
of your heart.

And with its pendant
shimmering,
almost like the brilliance
of a sunburnt sonnet,
it embraces your finger,
with hopes of
eternal caress.

It's so distracted by you
it forgets to close its loop,
and it spirals on and on
adoring.

When you bump you have to make up a sentence, like with the word game. I was using the word BUMP for that, but from now on it can be any word. Except bump! Heh.

I am going out of town, leaving tomorrow and back on Wednesday, but I will have access to a computer, and will post daily, including the results due in the Poetry Contest and Wordplay Contest.

Merci.
