In the efforts of getting me back on a normal schedule, I've gone to the shop twice this month. The reasoning is that it's a lot easier for me to go (normally) later in the month than the beginning when all the big bills are due.
Well, aren't you responsible?
Anyway, on to the reviews!
Marvel
X-Men: The End, Book Three - Men and X-Men #1 - And the award for longest name of an inconsequential comic goes to...
Three things happen here worth mentioning. None of them deaths.
1 - I finally saw this whole "Perfect Kitty" that Clairmont writes. Apparently Xavier thinks that Kitty is the key to the Mutants future and whatnot... it was just plain weird.
2 - Storm's paralyzed from the neck down, so instead of her very workable wheelchair, she just floats. Everywhere.
3 - Jean Grey and Logan GET IT ON!
The question now becomes, do we care? No. It's just a setup issue. Though with the appearance of Magneto and Polaris, where's Pietro and Wanda? HMM.
She-Hulk #4 - Sure? Not a fan of this particular issue. Not that it was bad, but I suppose I came in looking for a bit of comedy, and got a bit of drama instead. She-Hulk goes to a small town where she rampaged and helps to rebuild, and in the process, solves a crime.
We also get to see which Avenger she picked, and it's Billy Two-Gun. Who?
Son of M #2 - Speaking of Comedy...
Pietro gets revived on the moon, but wants to undergo TaraReid or some other torture to get his powers back. In response, he gets a big fat "Hell to the No" from Black Bolt's wif... err... Black Bolt, becaues he's the decision maker.
So Pietro naturally goes and gets Segagenesis or whatnot, but thinks it doesn't work. He goes back to his room and sees... himself sitting there? STAY TUNED.
X-Men: The 198 #1 - Toad wears Plastic Man goggles. Hee.
Not much to this issue as well, though the "internment camp" gets a few more inhabitants. And some really old-looking dude shows up there too.
New Avengers #14 - I liked it.
*inexplicably dodges CosmicBeing*
The issue was okay, but Cho didn't disappoint. His Spider-Woman is kickass. And someone was wearing a 'Liberty Meadows' t-shirt. First issue of the series I've bought, and it will most likely continue until the arc is done. Like I said, the story is okay but nothing AmazingFantastic. And I've got enough monthlies that can take it's place.
Story-wise, Jessica finally explains her place in the world, and how Fury screwed her over. Plus, the end of the issue is the NA having to make a press conference to announce they're the Avengers.
DC
Gotham Central #39 - Fallout from Crispus' Murder. Corrigan is fingered, but even with the evidence, he still may get off. It's all about the (fake) alibi and testimony, I suppose.
Renee and Dore (Crispus' wife) get to have a heart to heart, and they hoope Corrigan is busted, otherwise the system is truly broken. Possibly unfixable.
Desolation Jones #5 - Didn't read #4 to my recollection, so bear with me.
Well, isn't it convenient that we get a complete synopsis from the entire arc thus far? This issue sets up the "final" showdown between Jones and the illustrious third sister, Jessica. That's it.
Man, I'm getting the feeling that most of the comics I'm reading this time around are setup issues.. crud.
The Exterminators #1 - Read this. Now.
It's a comic about being on the front lines of a war.. the war against vermin. Mice, rats, insects, etc. Not that interested you say? Well, it's still a good book. It's an intro issue, naturally, but it exposes you to some of the "front line" dangers exterminators go through, seen through the eyes of the new guy to the scene. And it seems as if the major arc (so far) is that the roaches themselves are evolving, the poison that used to kill them now acts like a steroid.
I know I'm probably not explaining this right. So I'll just say "it's about bug killers" and on Vertigo, so there's cursing, blood, and guts. But seriously, you should check it out.
The Flash #230 - Last issue. Flash beats Savage, but fails to stop him from being shot into an asteroid. Who knows if that'll actually stop him though... Afterwords, we get Flash "monologuing" about family and wanting to slow down. THE END.
Nightwing #116 - Wow, Grayson's got a pair on her. She did something that few writers do.. decimated a relevant DC city. Chemo "goes to town" as it were on Bludhaven. Of course, the only reason he's there is because Slade told him to. Why? If it were me, I'd say because Slade was pissed that d**k got the better of him. Although the scale is a bit larger than usual.
Birds of Prey #90 - THANK YOU GAIL SIMONE.
Very good isse. Awesome culmination of an arc. Heck, the Deathstroke fight (While entertaining) wasn't the best part. Huntress showed her true colors, and proved she's a good girl afterall. What did she do?
War Games done properly. And in about 20 less issues.
Now that Helena is a Capo, she's got more intel on the Gotham gangs than anyone. And she got it all together in a neat little folder, and handed it to Batman.
Let's read that again.
Handed a folder with all the organized crime listings in Gotham to Batman.
He was speechless for a moment. He congratulated her on the outstanding work (RARE!) In response... Canary kissed him. On the lips.
The last couple of pages were the Birds going back and forth about that kiss, and Zinda finally finding out that Creote was gay. Plus, Savant and Creote quit the team after saving Canary from DS.
JSA Classified #7 - Icicle gets to be a hero. He saves his friend, gets the girl, and gets out alive with the help of his crew. Unfortunately, Johnny Sorrow (he was a Robin villain briefly, right?) wants to keep the crew together for more badness.. normally I'd be keyed (pun!) up, but the is about the JSA, not the IJS.. so I'll wait for the next issue to see if it stays.
Infinite Crisis #4 - Got the Jim Lee cover, because Connor v. Superboy Prime is awesome, especially if Krypto's there too.
It finally kicks in. WOOHOO!
What gets me is that Superboy Prime kept fighting. He could have stopped, but he didn't. I mean, they're all good guys. I'm sure if SP had stopped fighting and been all "hey, I don't want to fight.. I'll behave n' junk" he probably would have been fine. But no. He just keeps fighting and killing people. Those damn teenagers.
So, we find out why Slade nukes Bludhaven... and I was right. It says he wanted d**k to feel like he couldn't go home again, but unless Johns became a worse writer than Grayson overnight... uh huh.
And of course now there's no longer a Speed Force, after Wally took Superboy Prime into it, and then Linda and the twins jumped in when Wally wanted to say goodbye. Sucks for Bart and Jay, seeing as how they could have still used it.
Overall, good issue, and a great upswing from the last one.
Back Issue Time!
Bulleteer #1 - Nice!
I'm going to be honest. There are two very specific reasons I picked up this book. The fact that it's SSoV, and because it's heavily recommended. What, you thought I meant her breasts? Well, they are AmazingFantastic indeed.
Good issue, though I'd like to know why Alix survived and her husband didn't. What makes her so special? Oh, and the Indestructo-mouse is cuter than he should be.
Nite-Wing #42 - Ha. Got this one for the cover. I already 'own' the issue in a TPB. Greg Land drew it, if you're into that sort of thing.
Nightwing #47 - The Tad/d**k showdown. Only took a few pages, and Tad knocked himself out (slipped and hit his head on a table), but it was a good issue nonetheless.
Nightwing #49 - Introduces Sylph as a villain, her schtick is cloth. Basic revenge story.
TPB Time!
Seven Soldiers of Victory, Volume One - Have you ever played Tetris? Reading this makes my brain feel like the board. The pieces are issues... all sliding down and making little connections, forming lines and turning it into one cohesive block. I've always loved Tetris.
This pretty much sums up my feelings on the story. Though I will say that if there's a better artist than Ryan Sook, it's Cameron Stewart. His Manhattan Guardian is wonderful. Though this means I'll probably skip the rest of the series in monthly form and wait for all the trades, because this format is way better to read it in.
Penny Arcade: Attack of the Bacon Robots, Volume One - A collection of all their strips from 1998 to 2000. I love those wild and crazy guys. Heck, they even come with commentary by Tycho. Brilliant!
