(Summary)
It might have surprised them to find that Limbo, for all they'd thought it a place for those who had never tried in life, was the resting place for those who had tried and failed, as well.
Each story was a little different. They came from all walks of life... they had their individual dreams, and had their own personal lusts. There were those who had led righteous lives, presenting themselves before others as a beacon of justice and heroship. And those who had never done much in life but to drift, without direction or hope, until they found a path to greatness. Even those who had been scoundrels and cutthroats, one day seeking redemption through an ultimate cleansing of sin, scrambling to make up for vile deeds through a truly benevolent one. However... there was one thing that each and every soul had in common.
They had failed.
They had tried, for whatever personal reasons, to do something noble and great- and they had not succeeded. Perhaps they perished in the attempt. Perhaps, they were slain by old age after a lifetime of guilt. As their life ran empty, Death had come to them with a whisper and ushered them away from that mortal skin; the clamor of living behind them, they looked to their well-deserved rest--
But none of them... not one found the paradise they had thought to have earned for their self-sacrifice. When their bodies were inevitably destroyed, not a single soul reached the Heavenly gates. As heroes, they were failures; through their deaths or through their lifes, they doomed from existence what they had sworn to protect, or save, or create. Pledging one's life to a cause was no mistake, you must understand; but, for not preventing the destruction of that cause that they had taken the responsibility for, they were cast into Limbo. Reduced to nothing more than detached souls, devoid of thought or emotion, they were placed in the eternal void to wait for Judgement Day to come, that fatal sunset at the end of the world when their sins would be ultimately weighed and they would be freed at last from an endless dream of nothing.
That's the way it should have been. That's the way it had been meant to be. It had been decided that this was the only fate available to those who unwittingly destroyed something precious, through their own ineptitude; and it was a satisfactory course of resolve, which neither punished their good intentions by casting them into Hell for their sins, nor rewarded their shortcomings by passing them through to Heaven for their hardships endured.
But rarely do such plans work in the way they are intended. There was no other explanation to be found other than outside intereference when, upon a routine inventory check of the souls locked away in Limbo, three of these fallen heroes were discovered to be missing....
