I just wanted to make a thread for all of the genre literate gaians here. The ones listed here are her for a secret agreement, and weve planned all this. Im having all of them post here with thier specific genre of music. If you would like to be an official (appointed by these names listed. We have a council) then go ahead and show us your stuff in the thread!

Rules
1. No whining! wanna be one of us? Go ahead and prove yourself!
2.Keep it PG-13
3. follow the TOS
4. Have fun! Debate is always fun, well, till Amythe gets here(haha! Im kidding rofl )

Note: Eventually we (lolliPop Horrors and I) want to make a guild to keep the whiney ones in control.
Note two: We are not stuck up music snobs. We just want an organized place to debate, and help those with thier music.
Pop 1.0.1
For the smart people

Ever heard of a band called The Beatles? Yeah, I know you have.
Have you ever heard the song My Sharona, by The Knack? Yeah, you should have.
Eminem? Green Day? Frank Sinatra? You should have.
Well, these bands have one thing in common.
They're all pop, or varients of pop.

In the 1940's, pop emerged on the scene, mainly from ex-big band singers. The sound had little backing, repetetive, catchy, and very vocal oriented. If you want to get technical, pop died in the 60's with the spread of the mod movement. But, we'll just say, for all intensive purposes, pop has changed into what it is today.

Pop preceeded Rock N' Roll, and succeeded Big Band. Over the years, the original 'pop' sound has been spread from country to country, and added to almost every genre of music possible. By that I mean-- Yes, there is pop-rap, like Will Smith. Yes, there is Visual-Kei, like L'Arc~En~Ciel. But, in this short post, I will only include the major genres.

All of the fusion genres, like Pop-rock, is just a mixture of the two genres. One exception is pop-punk, where it's more pop-influenced punk, though I feel it necessary to post here. And power-pop is just basically a faster form of Pop. Under Bubblegum pop/Boy Bamds-Pop Princesses, I will make a seperator when I change from old Bubblegum Pop to the new Boy Bands and Pop Princesses.

Grunge is a style of music that, like it's definition, had a dirty sound that came from its harsh guitar chords, heavy rifts and drumming. The bands usually had three main instruments: Guitar, Bass and Drums and the influences were thrash, metal, rock and punk. Mudhoney was a band that sprouted from one of the first grunge bands - green river. Mudhoney members continued their awsome grungeness and brought grunge to the attention of millions of people when their show was reported on by Andy Catlin. Grunge still did not take hold outside of seattle until bands such as Pearljam, Nirvana and Alice in Chains pushed it over the edge. The early 90s were filled with grunge bands and soon grunge became mainstream, this caused some of the earlier bands to lose their appeal for the grunge culture.

Grunge died out because of three reasons. The first being that members from the major grunge bands had died and overall they stopped making music. Pop was on the rise pulling away many grunge fans. Lastly, post-grunge bands were being made, these had a cleaner sound and lyrics that made the songs more acceptable. Grunge fans found these bands as sell-outs and rejected most of them. However, grunge is still heard around the world today and the few post-grunge bands who did survive bring out new grunge songs and cds.

CLASSIC ROCK

question WHAT IS CLASSIC ROCK question

Rock music began in the 50's based roughly off of blues and jazz with louder and crazier sounds, and was made popular by artists like Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley. These artists helped to establish the basic rock n roll sound. In it's early years, rock n roll was not widely accepted. Many people considered it to be primitive, obscene music associated with Hell and protested it heavily. It wasn't until the 60's that rock became widely accepted, thanks to artists like The Beatles and the Beach Boys. In the 70s, classic rock was selling out arenas with acts like KISS and Led Zeppelin and rock was then a form of art.

During it's early stages, it was unsure what direction rock music would go in. There were many different artists showcasing a variety of new sounds. Some were influenced by country, others by classical symphonic music. There wasn't one particular sound that was dominant over the others, and this made the 60's and 70's a very diverse and interesting era for music.

Many classic rock stations play "other" eras, like Motley Crue, Nirvana and Metallica. Don't get us wrong, we love some of these artists, but they are not classic rock. The cutoff for classic rock is 1979. After that is 80s rock, grunge, alternative etc.

SOME QUICK EXAMPLES
Hard Rock - Led Zeppelin
Blues Rock - Cream
Folk - Simon & Garfunkel
Progressive - Yes
60s Rock - The Beatles
70s Rock - KISS
Glam Rock - David Bowie
Opera Rock - Meatloaf
Arena Rock - Queen

Hip Hop 101 the full version

http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?page=1&t=11744349#623551298 - a decent run down of many of the sub genre's of hip hop music.

Hip Hop 101 light :

In the beginning, there was Clive Campbell (aka Kool Herc), a loud stereo, a crate of records, and a whole lot of parties. An entire culture sprung from that. One of intense verbal sparring and skills, and a new way of viewing already recorded music, as well, of composing music.

Initially using what are called "break beats" emcee's would toast/ rhyme over top to hype the parties. Now using a huge assortment of beats, music, and rhyme-styles, hip hop has become a world wide sound.

The verbal portion consists of spoken/sung (yes sung) rhymes/poetry . Mostly 16 bar verses with a hook of some form are the formula of your average rap song. Not all artists follow that nor do all follow a rhyme scheme, many opt to play with other poetic devices such as alliteration. Things work much differently for a battle / competition. Usually these consist of one on one, or crew versus crew sets, with a set time limit for each side to have their say. Rarely are battles actually recorded and distributed (though it has been known to happen most often after someone has made a name for themselves). Subject matter is as varied as artists are. Anything from how much money and women you have, to how someone else is a bigger wimp then you, right on to how much you miss a loved one, you political view, or even star wars.

The instrumentals come in way to many forms to entirely cover. Producers and DJ's tend to make the beats and used to be at the forefront of a group, though in more recent times fame has started going more to the Emcee (thank you marketing). That's not to say that there aren't many people who can do all of or at least most of these jobs (pharell of the neptune, kanye west, k-os etc), but these are in todays mainstream a rarity. Initially the beats were simply mixed from one record to another with the use of a cross fader, but eventually when it became feasible to start actually recording as artists many people instead of just recording from already known samples started making their own. basically an instrumental is produced using either newly created samples or sections of already existing songs, some of which become almost legendary (ever heard apache by incredible bongo band? I bet you have, or at least a sample of it), and piecing it together. Other groups opt out of this, they find it to mechanical (which in some cases it becomes as such). They instead choose to work with or become a live band. Finally there is the verbal route, the beat box. using the throat and vocal cords and well... almost anything at disposal within your body (hands too) the beat boxer will create beats, scratches and any number of almost inhuman sounds.

essential listening:

Planet Rock - Afrika Bambaataa : these guys were pretty much the driving force behind hip hop culture in the 70's and 80's and right on up to today, ZULU NATION YO!

Rappers Delight - Sugar Hill Gang (the 14 minute version) : Considered by most to be the first rap "hit" record.

Don't Sweat the technique - Eric B. and Rakim : An essential old school track, Rakim is considered one of the best emcee's in his time by many.

Keep yah head up - Tupac : I feel like I have to put a Tupac track in here, the man was a philosopher and poet, and died long before his time. (though death row records was definitely ruining him)

Root Down - Beastie Boys : C'mon do I need to explain why I have them here?

Seed 2.0 - The Roots : these guys along with Beastie Boys and various other groups are proving all the haters, who say it's all music made from computers, wrong.

If Your Mother Only Knew - Rahzel : this is recorded live onstage and entirely with his voice, NOTHING else. Respect.

World destruction - Time Zone : for the punk fans out there... John Lydon rap's along side Afrika Bambaataa

Goth-Rock
Goth is a genre that was rooted in early glam-rock acts(such as T. Rex, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and the New York Dolls), and punk-rock(such as the Sex Pistols, The Germs, and The Damned). It took influence from all of those bands, and broke off into it's own genre in the late 70's. The band that kick-started the genre was believed by many to be Bauhaus, with their hit 'Bela Lugosi's Dead'. Other goth bands to form at this time included Siouxsie & the Banshees, Joy Division, and the Cure. These bands were characterized with a dark, and somewhat brooding sound. But this was not always the case, as many goth bands also tended to have cheerier, more upbeat songs as well. The goth-rock movement was largely based in the UK.

Goth Rock Bands:
Bauhaus
Siouxsie & the Banshees
The Cure
Joy Division
The Damned
Sisters of Mercy
The Birthday Party
Cocteau Twins
Red Lorry Yellow Lorry
Mission UK
Fields of the Nephilim
Love & Rockets
Chameleons UK
The Church

Death-Rock
Death-rock was a corresponding movement to goth-rock, that took place largely in the United States. Death-rock kept a lot more of it's punk roots than goth. It's sound is generally more harsh, and aggressive. Think punk with a morbid edge. The term "death-rock" was said to have been coined by Christian Death frontman Rozz Williams. Although death-rock was largely focused in Los Angeles, there was a small scene in the UK. In the UK there was a club called the Batcave, which harboured bands such as Specimen, Alien Sex Fiend, and Sex Gnag Children. Death-rock is more spread around now than it originally was, and remains a thriving scene.

Death-rock bands:
Christian Death
.45 Grave
Kommunity FK
Super Heroines
Voodoo Church
Specimen
Alien Sex Fiend
UK Decay
Sex Gang Children
Nervous Gender
Fahrenheit 451
Of A Mesh

Emo Guild

Emo 101
This is going to look kind of messy, here are extreme basics, with songs that I think do a fairly good job of showing each subsubsubgenre.

I AM NOT GOING TO DO A HISTORY OF EMO. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, IF YOU WANT THAT, YOU CAN PROBABLY FIND 5 GAZILLION DIFFERENT ARTICLES ON IT ON THE INTERNET.

Rather than my pure opinion on emo, I'm going to sum it up with a bunch of different (credible)sources on emo, so I can still act elitist to people who read this and go soley off of this.
Emo=Emotive hardcore, emotional hardcore, emotionally charged hardcore punk.

Emo is pretty much a slower version of hardcore with softer, and twinkly guitars. This is normally A LOT different in 'emo violence', which tends to be fast, and with very harsh guitars.
OFTEN TIMES emo bands have songs filled with 'emotianal' lyrics which look like free verse poetry. This is not at all inclusive, because there are emo bands which have quite a bit of songs that are entirely political, or that don't seem to have that much of an 'emotional' sense to them at all.

"Founding" emo bands, or "the emo framers": Husker Du, Rites of Spring, Dag Nasty, Fugazi, Native Nod, The Hated, Union of Armogedden. That is about as much 'emo history' as I'll have.
---------------------------------------------
EMOCORE
Original emocore-Rites of Spring
Rites of Spring- End on End
"second wave" emocore(lighter)-Kerosene 454 (Even though they have an extreme post-emo feel to them)
Kerosene 454-Electrics on the Rise
"second wave" emocore(harder)-Antioch Arrow(Antioch Arrow is often times placed in 'hardcore emo', but they remind me of a chaotic, non-awful Rites of Spring, so I put them here)
Antioch Arrow-Paper Moshay
Modern day emocore-Toru Okada
Toru Okada-Our Great Cities
------------------------------------------
EMO
Original emo-Native Nod
Native Nod-High Tides in Alaska
"second wave" emo-Moss Icon NOTE: these bands were not that far off time wise, but for the sake of sound I'm going to put them as "second wave".
Moss Icon-I'm Back Sleeping, or ******** or Something
Modern emo-City of Caterpillar(others will probably disagree, but they have far too much of regular emo sound for me to put them somewhere else)
City of ******** Hero
Science of Yabra-New Nemisis
Wow, Owls!-Houston, We Have a Drinking Problem

---------------------------------------------
HARD(CORE) EMO, I personally think Hardcore Emo sounds like a ridiculous name, but I don't really have much of another name to call this section, just think of it as a 'harder emo'.

Emo violence-(I can't hear any difference between 'new', and 'old' so it will just be one category)Angel Hair.
Angel Hair-Witch Hunt Scene From Star Trek
Honeywell-You and Me

Emo power violence- Zann.
Zann-Maschine Mensch
Emo power violence tends to have much heavier instrumentals and the vocals have more of an effect like a punch, while emo violence vocals have the effect like being cut. You have to listen to it in order to understand what I'm talking about.
You can find some Zann songs on http://www.adagio830.de/zann.html

HARD EMO(for those who NEED to have the 'hardcore emo' bands in)-Saetia, The Khayambii Comminique(awful), Joshua Fit For Battle.
Calling Gina Clark-Leichen Sind Puppen Zabriskie Point
Saetia-Notres Langues Trumpet
Orchid- Destination: Blood!
Raein-The Tree

-----------------------------------------------------
POST EMO
To be completely honest, I have no idea how this ever became considered a part of emo. This is incredibly soft, often sounds like pop-rock, or powerpop, with maybe a few occasional girlish yells.
The most famous of these bands would have to be Sunny Day Real Estate.
A few others: The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World(Static prevails), Mineral, and The Promise Ring(pre-Wood and Water)

BIG NOTE When I refer to bands as "second wave", I am NOT reffering to emo in waves, I am saying the original sound, the modern sound, and the 'second wave', is a band where you can hear the sort of sound changes into modern emo.
If you ever try arguing with someone about "third wave" and "second wave" emo, you're going to look like an idiot. Hell, if you base your opinion on emo soley off this post and try to argue, you're going to look like an idiot.
