Most (if not all) know the tale of the "seal woman" in some form or another. Tales of seals who become human once sheding their sealskin. Their magicial skin allows them to return to the sea as seals again. One of the more commonly known versions includes a beautiful young seal-woman sheding her sealskin, which is captured by a young man when the woman is distracted. The man refuses to return her sealskin, and they marry and have a son. The son is one day summoned by an ocean spirit to where the sealskin is hidden, and shows his mother. Both the boy and the woman then disappear into the sea.
Of course, this is only one of many versions, and is shortened greatly. The many others aren't siginificantly important. After all, they're just stories. ...Right?
Actually, these creatures exsist in Gaia. Mind you, not all are seals, and in fact can range anywhere from a fox to a panda, crazy as it may sound. However, their human forms are always very attractive beings to the eyes (though often time they're really ugly people, just not on the outside), and so many do seek to capture them as the man in the story did for the same purpose.
There are other reasons they're captured, though. Some even call themselves 'hunters' and work in secret organizations to caputre these creatures and, horrifying enough, sell them to whoever may be interested for what ever reason at high prices. You may not know it, but anyone you know here may be one of these people, silent perhaps out of fear.
While this is mostly the case, there are still some who're wild, most of the time running free in their animal form. Some even refuse to shed their skin to avoid the danger of being caught. Just as people do (and they would do in their human form, should they be captured and forced to live it out), these animals reproduce. Lately, the majority of these parents have been becoming increasingly worried for their offspring.
The younger generation can't grasp the fact of why shedding their skin would lead to danger, and the earlier mentioned 'hunters' won't think twice about snatching a child, as they'll eventually grow older. This in mind, many parents have been handing there children up for adoption to me. Why? Because I am one of them, or was. The man who stole my animal skin died, and never told me where he hid it, thus I am forced to live life out this way.
In addition, the majority who shed their skin don't actually appear completely human. However, they're animal traits will never reach beyond that of simple ears, tails, etc. But then, that's no uncommon sight on Gaia, now is it? No wonder they blend in so well...

.Animal.
There is sometimes no art for this stage because it's so short. Some Shifters will even be given to their new parent(s)/guardian(s) after they shed their animal skin and become a toddler. If you do recieve a baby animal, at least one of the parents will likely lurk around for a while. Unless they're dead, that is.
.Toddler.
Your baby, no matter what the animal, will start to act strange or restless (more so than usual if that's always the case). Watch them closely, as they'll soon shed their animal skin and emerge as a very young human. As guardian, it's your responsibility to hide this skin in a place they'll never find it. They will have no memory of this, and from this stage on will begin to learn and truly interact. Some guardians will be given their Shifter in this stage.
.Child.
Under the impression they're a normal citizen of Gaia, your toddler has grown into a hopefully healthy child. Nows the time for fun, games, and exploring! Or perhaps learning to read and write, depending on their interests. Some may be michevious and enjoy snooping around, so again I must emphasize how important hiding their animal skin some place they won't find it is...
.Teen.
For a few lucky guardians their now teenager will provide little problems, but in most cases count on loud music, rebeling, and a whole lot of violent outbursts if you happen to have one of the meaner ones. Your teenager will probably start (though there are always exceptions, of course) taking an interest in the opposite (or same) gender as more than a friend. Also, they'll begin to have odd dreams, hear voices, or similar occurences that will hint them to what they are.
.Young Adult.
Reaching the end of the line, the majority will have settled down. Both with a selected mate and life in general. At this stage, breeding will become avaliable, but any offspring will carry the animal traits of either the mother or father, and therefore never be able to change into an animal as their parents could at that age.
.Adult.
Finally, as an adult, they will learn what they are. Now ready to fend for themselves, the adult is to, under orders, be given back their animal skin. It is an option to them, not you as a guardian, to return to life as an animal in the wild or stay in Gaia. Also, the option of producing animal babies becomes avaliable if the mated pair are a similar species.

Flatsales: Flatsales will be the most common means by which to get a child. They'll consist of a prompt which you must answer, and time limits may differ. Any other rules will be specified at the time of said sale. At this time, no payment plans are excepted.Upcoming: None planned.
Auctions: These will be the most common sightings for guest artists. Usually before or after a flatsale, an auction will take place, though they'll pop up randomly as well. Starting bid is 15K, the price of a flatsale, and autos will vary.

Raffles: Every once in a while, there will be a raffle for some sort of special child. Don't count on seeing many, however. Tickets will be around 100-500 gold each.

Adoption: Though we'll hopefully never have to go through this process, adoption is, of course, where a child is taken from a former guardian and needs to be rehomed. For this process there will be some sort of prompt, though if someone is immediatly seen fit the child will be handed off to them. Adoptions will always be free.

ICRorika: This cat-eared woman is responsible for the any and all Shifter rescue programs, and is trusted by all her kind as well as fear by many hunters. She's got a quick wit and sharp tounge, so watch out.
Ess: A true romantic, some say, with woman in mind: Rorika. Unfortunately, our feline friend has no interest in this stork Shifter. When he's not busy trying to win her over, he's helping to better the Shifter world, mostly by delivering the Shifters themselves to new guardians.
Koska: Though he's truly Rorika's brother (and Raziel's father), Kosko poses to anyone outside the 'staff' as a mere house cat. He never shifts from that form, and it's not completely certain why. The feline is good friends with Ess and has a good relation with his sister as well.
Yujiha: Rorika and Koska's niece, another cat shifter. Though she'll gladly babysit for a new or old guardian, she does so due to her fondness of children, not because of a concern for her own kind. In fact, she's more interested in "teenage" things; mainly, cellphones! Yujiha is also the only Shifter, as a teenager, who knows exactly what she is.

BtS sounds weird. What can I call mine other than that? They're also adressed as 'Shifters', but never to them IC, as it would become to clear to some what they are.
How does my character find their BtS/Shifter?
Well, they don't really FIND them, and can recieve them in various ways. Usually, Rorika herself (after the parents have decided on a new guardian) will summon your character to the mansion and run the 'rules' by them. Other times, Ess will drop the baby(/toddler) off and do the same. In some rare ocassions, the parent animals will approach a potential guardian on their own.
Do they need some sort of quests to grow?
Yes. Though we didn't in the past, as of now we are making growth quests.
Can I have one?
Maybe, check availibility.
Do you do pet trades?
Yup! =D Again, check avaliability.
What about like, oh, a unicorn? Can I have that?
Perhaps, but animals such as unicorns, dinosaurs, dragons and the like will be very special, if there ever are any.
Do they have powers or abilities?
By nature, only abilities their animal would have. For example, a bird could fly. However, if your child lives in a house with eight witches it's only expected they'd learn some magic and be able to use it. Really, we're leaving any skills they develope up to you, but if you get out of hand we'll kindly let you know.
Are these RP required?
Yes. Why else would you want one? o_O
How often do we have to RP?
Eh, I don't know, every one-two weeks at least.
If I don't RP, will you take my child away?
Yup.
But I have to go on hiatus!
Then just let us know. We understand real life happens, but just vanishing for months is another story.
How many can we own?
One, currently, unless in the case of twins or maybe triplets.
How long do these take to grow?
It depends. Real life gets in the artists way sometimes, but it won't be TOO long after you sent the form in. Mostly, it's up to you.
What if they find their animal skin before Rorika confirms they're 'ready'?
They'll run away. Instinct kicks in and they're gone. Plain and simple. No coming back.
Okay, but what if my house catches on fire and their skin burns or something?
Wow, you've got quite a story there. I guess they'll have to angst over it when you tell them what they are.
So, what if, as an adult, they forever hate their guardian and decide to pick up their animal skin and go?
Uh, that's up to you I guess. Some will hate their guardians for hiding the truth, and others will just be pleased to have a nifty new shapeshifting ability.
Will there be more of one animal?
Yup.
Will they come in unnatural colors?
I don't see why not. They're are multi-colored anthros/shapeshifters/etc. on Gaia.
Can I have an animal if someone already has it?
Yes, but of course they can't look too similar or anything.
