Serk wrote this and it covers many of the areas that I personally am not as familiar in, especially character developement. Yay for Serk ^_^ (we all thank you)
Many literary pieces have been written on Gaia about role-playing. There is the AMP, the Tao, GARR and works by Doji Kurohito, The Riddle Master and Gelmax. This is another piece, done by me.
An explanation of how this is written: I'm going to go over things that I think should be focused on more, and opinions of how one should fight. It's all about the basics because then you can build on it and make what I've suggested something more fitting for you.
Basics: Your character:
Not much thought is put into the character that you want to role-play, only what they do. Try to have your character relate to you in some way, personality, looks, style, something that makes who you have made unique and interesting. If you have a certain creature you like, incorporate it, but don't make it a super mix of everything so it's the imaginary friend you wanted as a little kid.
Designing your character:
Make it what you like, not something that looked cool to you when someone else did it, BE CREATIVE. Also, keep in mind what you want your character to be. Keep this in mind when you build on it. Build your character around what you want to do. (Remember, this means that if your character isn't a great person in combat, don't put it in situations it can never handle.)
Clothing your character:
Clothing is also an important part. If this person is sneaky, give them dark clothing, if they are mages, give them something that can hold ingredients for spells. Keep what you do in mind when you dress.
Character personality:
If your character is nice, show it and how hard it is for them to fight, but that they understand the necessity of it. Don't just make them go evil or switch personality when its time to throw down. This is where modeling it after your personality comes into play. You can apply you in the situation. You might make better choices that way.
Basics: Weapons:
If you plan on using your character for battle, you should arm them. But make their weapons fit their personality, style and chosen 'class.'
What to fight with:
Make it fit, a swordsman won't use a kunai, and a ninja won't use a rocket launcher. If you fight using quick moves, small weapons. If you really like one kind of weapon, it should fit with your character, don't carry around a big sword if you can never use it.
Designing your weapons:
Now that you have your basic weapon idea, customize it. Anyone can have a katana, do something interesting. A straight, double edges sword with spikes that stick out of one blade side is interesting, and it can be practical. Think about what you will fight, be prepared.
Designing your weapons 2:
Hidden weapons can be useful, but don't go overboard. Be creative, have a small thick sword, that when you pull on the handle, (the handle) splits halfway along to have a small dagger inside the actual sword. Have weapons that can help out in a tight spot, think ahead.
Using your weapons:
See combat.
Basics: Armor
You are what you wear:
Don't go overboard, you will get weighted down whether you like it or not, it's how it goes. Have armor where you need it and make it light. It's better to dodge something then block it. There isn't a lot you can say here.
Basics: Magic or Abilities:
Once again, make them fit with your character, also your weapons. Use all three together to be a more united character. These three things, along with combat, should work together. If they don't, go back and fiddle with a few things.
Magic:
There is already a lot on this, just know what your spells do and how the can be seen viewed by your enemy. If you use sneaky spells, don't make them noticeable.
Level of magic:
Don't make it your focus; unless that is the kind of character you want. In that case, don't focus on weapons and combat as much. You cannot demolish guilds with a single spell. Put limits on it so it seems fair.
Level of abilities:
Just like with magic, don't make your person do or be everything, have weaknesses and flaws, then overcome them.
Basics: Combat:
If you get in a fight, do it your way, not how cloud does it.
Using your weapon:
Use them the way they are designed, mixed in with some creative flair.
Moves:
Know what you can do, and how to do it, know the flaws of the move, and have a backup plan if it fails, be prepared to change what you do to something else if it won't work.
Moves 2:
Combo, not as in striking a lot in one move, but plan what you are doing, how to react to your foes next move, etc. PLAN!
Blocking:
Your opponent has moves too. Study them. Know what their moves do, and how to counteract them, and then use it to your advantage.
Basics: Non-Combat:
It does exist, and it matters too. During this time, do some other aspects of role-playing, make friends, being nice, gain allies and learning. Make your character grow; it?s a nice excuse to add to what they can do.
Basics: Things to keep in mind.
Losing:
You can lose; everyone eventually loses in some way. If you get in a fight you will lose, stick it out and try your best, then learn from it, you are more respectable that way.
Basic:
Keep much of what you do simple, hard to explain but super strong moves are headaches for everyone that lead to flame wars. Same with one move PWNs, they never work, just take your time.
What you do:
Moves are important, but they need to make sense, describe with detail and if they need clarity, re-phrase. It kills a fight to constantly explain what you just did. Avoid this by re-reading what you just wrote to be sure it makes sense.
How you say it:
Try to use proper spelling and grammar, as well as good detail and description in posts, don't just say 'walks in,' you can do much better.
Attitude OOC:
Be yourself, but not an a**. Be nice and respectful, you gain much more by just doing that. Don't argue things to in-depth, it makes things worse, just be kind, but firm as you explain.
Think:
Use your brain when you RP, enough said.
Thanks.

Generally accepted rules of Rping:
-Feel free to critique this, I will try and edit it to any sane changes.-
Quote:
Basic Guidelines of RPing and rules of proper English.
All right everyone, here are some basic steps on RPing either for improvement or on how to RP. Be sure to read these:
Doji's Tao of fighting
[Off-Gaia]AMP
they make a better base to the entire document.
Riddles full rules on resepect and such. Read down a couple pages for the full of it.
-No contractions
*Abbreviations
-Personal Pronouns
*I, Me, My, Us, Our (Yourself and/or someone reading the paper or the paper itself.)
-Present tense
-Complete sentences
-No passive voice.
-Because when quotes are used, they are actually speech, they do not have to follow these rules.
Try to follow all of those while RPing; A third person view of the RP allows for a smoother, better flowing, more interesting time. Using third person also makes you look less self-centered than using "I do this, I do that". Contradictions are fine in speech and during the actual RP, but try and refrain from using them if you aren't completely sure about the actual abbreviation. Present tense keeps the RP flowing more smoothly and allows for better control of word choice. Past tense may be used after speech to describe the speech after said character has spoken.
It is still easier to write the entire paragraph in present tense. Always use complete sentences, it allows the person reading the document to have a good understanding of what you're trying to get across. Try not to use passive voice, the over use of "is" and it's counterparts, "are", "was" etc, this makes the RP boring and monotonous.
How to post, the basics:
All right, there are Riddles words of wisdom, or at least what I believe are the necessary parts that pertain to this.
Respect: A major part, as in Riddles first and third rules, is respect, for everyone. Elites and Oldbies, along with the literates and everyone else.
If you Mess with the best, you will be thrown out with the rest, Simply put, no one is the best and as a newer RPer, you will be, excuse my language, but raped up the a** by several hentai tentical monsters if you try to fight the well establishd RPers. They know what they are doing and can do it pretty damn well.
People who you better have some major Rrespect for:
All mods, they are normally right, dont be foolish with them or try and argue, you will lose.
Doji Kurohito:The sovern lord of the great guild forum, he is in all aspects to us sheep, God.
Gelmax: Elitist b***h, he will shoot you down in a reighn of showering flaming. Stay clear of this guy and all of his mules.
Serk: One of the few people with the respect and power needed to help out en masse. He is one of the best Literates, and always willing to help.
Others will be added, most of the Literates know they should be on this list, including, but not limited to; Seta, Riddle, Oxy, Gabe, and pretty much all of the teachers on Serks list. And plenty more. But be sure to respect everyone.
Obviously, I need a reasons for this. Simply put, after reading Dojis tao, the AMP and RPing for over a year on Gaia, it takes a lot to learn how to RP well, or even averagely, such as driving. Dojis Tao and the AMP wont help a new person on how to actually RP, they are texts good to refrence and are not law. They can be understood by an established RPer who understands how to RP. A one on one teacher is best, but understand what you need to do off the bat with them will save you, them time, and allow more people to learn faster.
The power of Proper spelling, grammar, and English:
When during normal OOC speech, RPing or any other form of communication, it is always a good Idea to use proper English and not chat/net speak. Using proper punctuation, grammar, spelling etc. will make you look at least slightly educated and give you some respect.
How to understand other forms of RPing:
Obviously there are other forms of RPing that what you may be taught from some of the Literates in the FFA.
One of the most common is to use, *action* (astrises) or ::action:: (double colons) to surround text that is what the character is actually doing. These are frowned upon in most formal RPs.
Guilds, what new players need to do:
After a new player has learned how to RP decently, the best idea for him or her is to go out and join a guild, it will further your understanding of RPing and consequential actions with other players as well as teach you about different forms and styles than one teacher.
Interaction with newbies and newbie guilds:
When RPing, everyone is bound to come in contact with newbies or newbs, the new players. These are the people everyone once was. DO NOT go flaming and trolling to attack them, you will most likely get reported, or mindlessly flamed back. Understand what they are doing, join in and become the big brother figure, teach them how to RP well and the joys of proper English.
On how and why writing came to be and why it is as such.
Okay, to help everyone understand exactly why we have a written language and how it came to be, there is this section.
Written languages were originally developed, and are still used for much the same purpose today, to imitate speech. If you want to send a message to someone a thousand miles away, three thousand years ago, are you going to tell your local runner to go run to the emperor and tell him the Huns are attacking? Maybe, but this could
A. Incite panic amongst the local people
B. Your messenger could forget some of the info on the way if it is any more than that simple message, if you try and tell numbers, places, dates, how the hell is he supposed to remember all of that?
Obviously, you want to write it down. Hence, a semi-uniform written language to make a civilization, a civilization. When the first written languages were made, they consisted of pictures meaning words, phonograms. These over time evolved into a written language. Because language changes over time and space, different accents over time evolve into completely different languages. Because of this, what your character is actually saying, does not have to follow the rules of proper English, but also because of this, to keep some consistency between different peoples posts, the actual Rp format should be in as proper English as possible.
Character sheets, though useful in literate, controlled Rps and in tournaments, are more of a hassle in general RPing because there is nothing close to a standard sheet for Rping. People use different scales, and often, they can be easily changed to make your character more powerful than he/she should be. The basis for RPing should be your actual skill in combat and the amount of respect you earn through personal interaction with other Rpers.
Just as a quick note that is well known by all semi-lit, literate and above; using curse or cuss words does not make you sound older, more mature, or cooler in any way. They, unless used properly during a Rp as adjectives of what your character is thinking or saying, (and then only in moderation) make you look like a seventh grader who is trying to act hip and cool with his friends, though when looked down upon by someone older and actually more mature, he looks rather annoying. So for everyones sake, keep cuss words to proper meanings.
On another quick note, always follow thread specific rules, many Rping guilds recognize the AMP as a good basis for what is Godmoding, but others do not. Make sure to read the first posts, or until OOC or Rping starts.

Example
Standing on the edge of a large cliff, overlooking a magnificent cliff, Joe's hair tosses in the wind blowing up the side of the granite cliff. Looking straight down, Joe gasps, "Wow!" he was utterly astounded by the power of the site, and steps back.

Stolen from my English teacher
-Sentences can be written or spoken in the active or passive voice. In the active voice, the subject of the sentence acts upon something or someone. In the passive voice, the subject is acted upon.
Active vs. Passive Voice
-For example
-Active Voice: The twister left a path of destruction.
-Passive Voice: A path of destruction was left by the twister.
Why does it matter?
-Writers should usually use the active voice rather than the passive. It's considered to be a more powerful and straightforward form of expression. The active voice also uses less words to convey the same message.

The Example
"Hey, over here!" Riddle yelled, waving his arms at his domo friends. They came rushing towards him, ready to follow his every command. "I sure hope this works," the domo master thought to himself, tapping into his inner psyche and preparing to transmit a psychic message. ~"Hey Jester? You there, man?"~
((This will be such a funny attack! XDD ))
((This will be such a funny attack! XDD ))
This may seem complicated, but is actually very basic. You've all probably read a book or two in your time. That's good. Think back to those. If you remember correctly, things people said were in quotation marks, and things people did were left unmarked. Remember, a roleplay is nothing more than a book with multiple authors. For it to flow correctly, we have to all use the same format. Now, I will break them down one by one.
"Things your character says are surrounded by quotation marks."
Things they do, such as taking action, swinging a sword, or shoving their hand down a girls skirt is left unmarked.
"Things they think are generally quoted and put into italics."
~"Messages sent by psychic powers are marked as shown: italics, quotes and those funny squiggly lines no one really has a name for."~
((OOC, or out of character, messages are surrounded by the double parenthesis.))
Got all that? I'm moving on after this next post.

Ah, that's right. There's more...
Basic Rules of English #2
Alright, you might not all know how to spell or use grammar properly. That's fine, but at least try. I can tell you right now that I would gladly wait an extra two minutes while you go through and revise your post for any conventional errors. Want a useful tip to avoid simple grammar mistakes? Speak aloud while you type. I do it all the time. Hell, I'm doing it right now. Granted, you may speak a little slower, depending on your typing speed, but that will increase in time. Also, pay attention in your English class. Your teachers really do know what they are talking about.
Making Yourself Look Smart #3
Want to know my secret to making my posts look so saavy and intelligent? www.dictionary.com. No joke, people. If I find that I continually overuse a word, I hop on over there, throw it in the thesaurus, and BAM! I've got fifteen different words I can use. I'm not afraid to admit it; I'm a dictionary.com whore. I usually have the window open right next to my Gaian window. You'd be surprised how the occasional big word can awe your audiences. Also, use this for spelling. Don't know how to spell a word? Stop guessing and take ten seconds to check it. Even all you 56kers out there. It's pretty damn fast, even on slow connections. Do it. Or look like a n00b.

Moves:

It does exist, and it matters too. During this time, do some other aspects of role-playing, make friends, being nice, gain allies and learning. Make your character grow; it?s a nice excuse to add to what they can do.
Basics: Things to keep in mind.

Thanks.
