Kiarna ran through the woods, nimble as a deer. Oh, how she loved the woods! At night, it was so peaceful, and there was this whole different side to the dark night. And in the day, as it was now, the sun glittered through the foliage like a waterfall of gold. Laughing joyously, she burst out of the woods into a meadow.
Shocked, Kiarna reeled back. The laughter died from her lips, as she stared at the beautiful little girl hovering slightly in the tall grass, flapping her two little bat wings...
The girl had dark hair that glinted a fiery red in the sunlight, framing two blood-red eyes set in a pale, sweet cat-shaped face. Her hair was put in a hastily done bun; rather messy - wisps of hair had escaped and curled around her head like a halo of fire. They almost looked like pumpkin vines. She wore a dress - creamy orange-white on the top, a brighter orange on the bottom. A black sash seperated the two colors. Black ribbons with black beads dangling at the end of them also hung from the sleeves, which ended above the elbow. Black slippers were laced to her feet. Her staff was what caught Kiarna's attention the most, however. A long, black staff with ribbons and beads tied to the bottom, and a spherical globe perched on top. The globe was fascinating...swirls of orange, red, yellow, and white all swirled together to make...Kiarna gasped in horror as she realize what was swirling in the globe.
A ghost. A ghost, mouth forming a long, oblong O of horror, as it went up in flames.
The girl was humming an unrecognizable tune as she hovered, but as she heard Kiarna's gasp, she jumped in fright. "Oh!"
She fled into the woods, and Kiarna wondered if she had ever really saw her, or if she had just imagined it.
Kiarna warily crept through the woods. She had to find more about this strange girl. Slowly, she stole toward the clearing she had met the girl...and paused.
There she was, her hair glowing a halo of fire around her head.
Kiarna hadn't noticed it before, but the blood-red eyes seemed shaped rather like a cat's...
Finally, she chanced a word. "Um, excuse me?"
The girl jumped as before, and seemed prepared to run, but relaxed somewhat when she saw Kiarna.
"I'm sorry to bother you..."
"No need, Kiarna."
Kiarna gaped. "How did you know my name?"
"It's not really your name, though, is it, young Shopkeeper?"
Kiarna was stupified into silence. It was several moments before she could speak again. "Who are you?" Hesitation. "Or, more accurately - what are you?"
"I am an Interpretation."
I am an Interpretation...
It took Kiarna a moment for that to sink in. Then she stumbled back, a cry in her mouth. "I thought you had all disappeared! All but Mere!" The look in her eyes said, Is she going to kill me, like all the others?
The girl looked confused. "What do you mean?" A look of comprehension seeped onto her face. "You don't know about the Others?" she said in disbelief.
Kiarna blinked. "There are Others? But..how did they come to be!"
"Are coming to be. I think." Before Kiarna could comment, the girl continued: "I don't really know, I'm a rather young Interpretation. I know there are other ways for Others to come to be, but I only know of my way. I was made by the Creators."
"The Gods themselves?" Kiarna was awed. "What is your Inspiration?"
At this, the girl grinned wickedly, and Kiarna caught a glimpse of her tiny teeth - filed to little points, glittering in an unsettling fashion. "I'm a spirit of Halloween."
"Halloween?" Kiarna snorted. "But Halloween isn't that young!!"
"I'm the newest Halloween. Interpretations can die, you know. When Halloween dies, the Gods must make a new one."
"Oh," said Kiarna faintly. Her hopes that maybe this was just a nasty trick being played on her was beginning to be snuffed out. "So why are you telling me all this?"
"I want to have a parent."
"WHAT?"
"I just want someone to love me...it's sort of lonely. I mean, its...tiring to know that you're really just a figment of imagination, but then I'm not even loved, like the Interpretations at your shop..."
Kiarna squinted at the girl. "What is your name, miss?"
"Shia."
"Come with me, Shia."
