Prologue

3 years and two weeks ago.....

"Why do you have to go?!?!??!?" Kagome asked as an older man closed his brief case. He smiled at the young girl who mirrored his image with her black hair and brown eyes.

"It's part of my job Kitsune."

"Can't I got with you?"

"No, Kagome, but I'll be back in two weeks. I'll bring both you and Sota something. I promise." Kagome hugged him followed by her seven-year-old brother, Sota, who looked exactly like their father in every way.

"I'll miss you daddy." He said, thier mother watched from the doorway.

3 years and two days ago....

"We come from you live on the scene...." A newsreporter began as a young boy with silver hair and amber eyes sat with his best friend, a boy about his age with black hair and brown eyes with a purple cloth wrapped around his right hand.

"Look, I tell ya, she's not good for you man." His friend, Miroku, said.

"Shhh!" He waved for his friend to be quiet as he heard what he didn't want to know.

".... a shooting led to the deaths of two innocent bystanders. One victum was identified as 14 year old Kikyo Ragui; police are still trying to identify the 37 year old man who was also a victum...." He stopped listening as it hit him. His face paled, his eyes black in shock. Kikyo, his girlfriend, was dead.

"I'm so sorry man..." Miroku's voice broke his thoughts. He closed his eyes as pain raked through him. He'd lost the one person who'd loved him for who he was....

3 years ago (exactly) .....

A knock at the door interupted Kagome and Sota's excited screams as they chased each other throught he house. Their mother opened the door even as she called to them over her shoulder.

"Settle down you two!" She turned to the officer at her door.

"Mrs. Higurashi?"

"Yes?"

"Will you step outside for a moment please?" He asked, glancing past her at the children.

"Of course, Kagome, Sota, you two find something quieter to do." She said before stepping outside. Kagome went to the window and looked outside. She couldn't hear what was being said, but she saw that her mother was upset by it and took a suitcase from the officer even as tears ran down her face. When she came back in her eyes were wet with tears.

"Mommy, what's wrong?" Kagome asked as their mother set the suitcase down and knelt before them as they went over to her.

"That's daddy's suitcase." Sota said.

"Where's daddy?" Their mother gathered them in her arms, barely able to chock out the words.

"He's not coming home sweetheart.... he's.... dead." Sota burst into tears along with Kagome.

How could he?! She thought. He'd promised her that he'd come back. Tears flowed down her cheeks in sorrowful anger.

[I know it's short, but the chapters get longer as it goes. enjoy!]

Chapter One

"Hey! Here he comes!" Eri yelled as the roar of a motorcycle sent heads turning and girls screaming while boys looked on jealously.

Who could cause such a commotion? Kagome thought, at age sixteen she had transfered to Tokyo a few months ago and had easily made friends with Eri, Aymi and one other girl whose name she was hard pressed to remember. As he drove up and stopped, Kagome's mind went blank. On a black Harley-Davidson was the most handsome guy she'd ever seen. He wore a blood red t-shirt along with the navy blue pants that was part of the uniform for the guys. Black shades hid his eyes, his silvery white hair flared around his shoulders as it fell down his back. She stood and stared; it was all she could do. She clutched one of her books closer as he swiveled his head and looked at her. Ignoring the girls that had clustered around him as he dismounted, he tilted his glasses down only enough to reveal the most striking amber eyes. Kagome held her breath as their gazes locked for a brief time. A voice calling out nearly made her jump.

"Okay you guys, give the boy room to breathe." Kagome saw an older girl pushing through the crowd that reluctantly fell back.

"You all have better things to do." She said as she brushed a lock of dark chestnut hair from her hazel eyes. Like all the other girls she wore the white sailor like shirt, a short green skirt that stopped above her knees and white socks with her black, flat shoes.

"Who's that?" Kagome asked as Aymi joined her and Eri.

"That's Carolina Hero. She moved here last year; she's a transfer student, studying abroad from America. She's really nice."

"Is she in our grade?"

"No, she's higher." The chattering crowd grew quiet as an older boy approached. The boy who was in the middle of the crowd shot the other boy a cool look as he pushed his glasses back up.

"That's Sesshomaru Hirogawi, Inuyasha's older, half brother." Aymi murmured. Carolina smiled at Sesshomaru and spoke before he could.

"Sesshomaru, will you walk me to class?" He reguarded Inuyasha cooly a moment before he nodded and held out his arm to her, his gaze softening somewhat. The crowd watched them go; Inuyasha took advantage of the distraction and slipped away to meet Miroku who was standing a few feet away.

"Hey, what do you know about that girl standing with Aymi and Eri?" He asked. Miroku glanced from his friend to the trio beyond the crowd.

"Her? Not much really, she's the new girl Sango told me about. Keeps to herself mostly, but she's friendly. Her name is Kagome Higurashi." Inuyasha didn't say anything as he reguarded her, wondering why she seemed so familiar. She resembled his old girlfriend, Kikyo; that much was obvious. He hadn't thought about Kikyo since he'd gone to her funeral three years ago when a deliquent teenager named Kagura had shot at another target and had hit Kikyo and another instead. He pushed the thought away; Miroku was the only other human who knew what he really was.

"Yo! Earth to Inuyasha! We're gonna be late!" Inuyasha blinked then nodded to Miroku and the two hurried to class.

[ doesn't anyone like it or even READ it? here's chapter 2... in case anyone does]

Chapter Two

"Class, we have a new student. Please make Kagome Higurashi feel welcome." Kagome felt nervous as she reguarded the class and saw Inuyasha staring at her from the back.

"Hojo, will you show Kagome around?"

"I'd be happy to." The brown haired boy with brown eyes replied; like most of the other boys he wore the school uniform properly.

"Take a seat Kagome." The teacher instructed. Kagome sat down; the only empty seat was the one between Hojo and Inuyasha. Kagome tried not to look nervous as she sat down between them. Inuyasha watched her from the corner of his eye. Yes, she looked a lot like Kikyo all right, but there was definately something different about her. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but she was nearly the same as Kikyo in nearly every way. He spent more time staring at her then paying attention to the teacher. Before he knew it the bell sounded and Hojo was calling to Kagome. Inuyasha narrowed his eyes in a spurt of jealousy; not that anyone could see his eyes behind his shades.

"Inuyasha, come here please." The teacher said.

"What do you suppose he did this time?" Someone whispered as he walked to the teacher's desk while everyone else left. Once the room was empty she handed him his paper.

"Well done Inuyasha." He smiled slightly. She was the only teacher who seemed to understand why he kept it secret that he had good grades. At least he had since Kikyo's death.

"What do you know about Inuyasha?" Kagome asked Aymi later on, just before their last class.

"That he's a deliquient, or at least he has been since he lost his girlfriend three years ago."

"How sad... I lost my father that same year."

"Sorry to hear that."

"Yeah, well, what else do you know?"

"That he's not shown interest in girls since and trusts no one save his best friend, Miroku Kagwi." At that moment, both Inuyasha and Miroku walked in.

"Look, I'll see you later." Miroku said before he left the room quickly. Kagome watched Inuyasha as he came towards them.

"I also know he's not for you." Aymi managed to say before he stopped before them. He looked straight at Kagome, trying to swallow the sudden nervousness he was feeling.

"Hey," He tilted his glasses down as he had when he first saw her; he could tell she was nervous and for some strange reason he felt pleasure from it. If his eyes made her nervous what would she be like if she knew the truth? He shoved the thought away. "so you're the new kid huh?"

"Yeah, I am." She said without hesitation.

She's got guts. Before he knew it he was smiling at her.

"That's cool, I'll catch you later." He turned away, emotions warring inside of him, but his shades hid his eyes again. Aymi's jaw dropped as he walked away.

"I... I... don't believe what I just saw! He actually smiled at you!" Kagome blinked, her heart was racing; he'd smiled at her and it had only served to make him seem that much more handsome!

"I'm so jealous!" Aymi said, but stopped talking when she realized her friend wasn't playing attention.

"Kagome... you have the hots for him don't you?!" Kagome blinked as she came out of it.

"Don't say that out loud! He might hear you!" Kagome hissed, her cheeks coloring slightly; completely unaware that he had and was staring out the window as he felt his cheeks grow warm.

He knew nothing about this girl and yet one word about her liking him had him turning as red as an apple; what was with him?

"So you DO then!" Aymi said in a hushed tone.

"Well, he is cute."

"Are you serious?!?!?!"

"Okay, okay; I admit it, he's more then cute. He's gorgeous!" The more he listened the redder he got. He hid his face in his arms; feigning being tired.

Kami! WHy does she affect me so?!? Could it be that I just might like her a little bit? He thought.

Who are you kiding! The girl is hot! A voice nagged in his head.

Excuse me?!?! Who the hell are you?!?! There was a pause.

Oh, just someone with your best interest in mind. Came the reply.

Very funny. Get out of my head Carolina! The voice laughed.

Sorry pal, but I ain't her. Inuyasha jolted slightly. He was use to voices in his head as Carolina was some sort of psychic or something. That was her secret anyway. The fact that she wasn't alone scared him as sometimes some strange things happened to her, around her or to those around her. He wasn't scared of her since she'd explained it all after a strange woman tried to kill her and in her attempt had wrecked the living room of his house, which she'd then fixed.

Calm down dogboy, I'm not here to hurt you and I'm a friend of Carolina's. Angry at her and the voice, he replied scathingly.

If you are then you'll stop playing games and tell me who you are or else show yourself! There was a mental sigh that followed.

Fine. My name is Titus, satisfied? Inuyasha didn't answer.

Look, I really am just trying to help and she is hot so I say go for it and before you argue I do know about your past. Carolina told me. Inuyasha nearly groaned aloud. Did the girl share his private life with everyone?!?!

Carolina!!! He thought towards her in a groan.

Sorry Inuyasha, he's like me and needs to know. He snorted slightly.

Tell him to mind his own damn business then and stop callin' Kagome hot! He heard her faint laughter in his head even as she agreed.

Chapter Three

It was a beautiful summer day; Kagome sat on a bench in the park watching the sun slowly sink towards the horizon. It was one of the only breaks they got from school. Two months of school; Carolina had approached her and they'd become instant friends and she'd introduced Kagome to Sango who was Carolina's age, but had black hair and brown eyes. She learned that Sango secretly loved Miroku who had the reputation of being a major player; asking every woman he saw if she would bare his child. Something about a curse in his right hand that no one but his best friend believed and his best friend was none other then Inuyasha.

"Ha! I win! Man, your mind ain't on the game." Miroku said as he won the fighting match.

"What's with you?"

"I donno, I can't get her out of my head." He blurted out before realizing what he'd said.

"Inuyasha, you need to chill; whose on your mind? It's not... her... is it?"

"No, it's that new girl, Kagome."

"Yeah, I met her; Sango introduced us."

"You've met her and you didn't tell me!!!"

"Whoa! Chill out! I just met her yesterday. She's a nice girl and so fine -" His sentance was cut off by a pillow in his face and the look in his friend's eyes.

"I'm goin' for a ride. See you later." Inuyasha got up and was out the door before Miroku could speak. Kagome was watching the stars come out on a park bench when a figure with jet black hair and dark brown eyes appeared.

"Hello. You're the new student in my class, Kagome isn't it?"

"Yeah, and you're Naraku Ningi right?"

"Indeed I am. I'm flattered you remember me." He took a step towards her and Kagome became very nervous.

"You shouldn't be out here alone at night, you never know what kind of people walk the night."

He slowly moved closer; Kagome stood up and slowly moved away. She didn't know why, but for some reason he scared her. Naraku grabbed her hand; a chill went through her.

"Don't be afraid, I won't hurt you..." Somehow she didn't trust him at all.The roar of a motorcycle engine had Kagome tearing away her hand as he loosened his grip when a single headlight hit his eyes. Inuyasha skidded the bike to a hault. His voice colder then ice.

"Naraku."

"Well, if it isn't Inuyasha." Kagome felt relief at seeing him.

"You okay Kagome?"

"Yeah." Inuyasha stared daggers at his rival; Naraku had wanted Kikyo as his when they were younger, but it was Inuyasha who'd held her love. They'd been vicious rivals since.

"Want a ride home?" He asked, his eyes glued to Naraku.

"Sure." Kagome quickly mounted behind him, wrapping her arms around him; he knew she was scared and knowing Naraku was the cause made him go cold with fury. Inuuasha didn't waste time in setting off. He could feel her sigh of relief once they were gone. Not sure of where she lived he drove around town until her reached the other park. When he stopped he noticed she hesitated before she let go.

"You never said where you lived." He said quietly when she dismounted.

"It's okay, I really just wanted to get away from him."

"I don't blame you. You'd do better to stay away from him."

"Thanks for coming to my rescue." She said a bit hesitantly. He smiled slightly.

"No problem. So, where do you live?"

"The Higurashi Shrine." There was a pause.

"You want some company?"

"I wouldn't mind actually." He got off the bike and noticed she was shivering a bit. He took off his leather jacket and put it over her shoulders. She turned her head towards him; both moved and surprised at the gesture.

"Thanks." She murmured softly and smiled at him. A chill of pleasure went through him when he saw her smile and he wondered at how he could feel this way about someone he didn't even know.

"You have quite a reputation you know." She said quietly. Inuyasha tensed slightly.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah, you don't seem to be as much of a loner as they say." He relaxed again.

"I guess."

"Sango told me about Kikyo." He tensed again. So she knew Sango. What had that woman said?

"I'm sorry. I know what it's like to lose someone you love. That day... my father was there on business. He was gunned down with her." Inuyasha blinked.

The other victim was... her father?!?!?! He thought in shock. He'd never known his father as he'd died protecting his mother. His older brother told him stories at times of their father and what a good "man" he'd been. Inuyasha didn't know what to say as she tilted her head to look at the stars. He looked up as well. The stars glistened brightly and suddenly a falling star shot across the sky.

"Make a wish!" She said suddenly.

A wish... Just being here with you is enough of a wish for me. He thought.

I wish that time with you won't end. She thought.

"Do you have a boyfriend?" He asked quietly. There was a long pause.

"No, I don't." Inuyasha felt relieved; he knew he would hate himself if she'd said she did. It was irrational for him to feel this strongly when he'd just met her a couple months ago when she'd been in front of the school that first day when he'd decided to make an entrance on his bike. The two stood together, he put one arm around her casually; she responded by laying her head agianst his shoulder. The night was cool, but he didn't feel it as he held Kagome close. Somehow it just felt right; he couldn't remember the last time he'd felt this way about any girl. What did he really know of her other then talks with Aymi and Eri that had only proved that they had lots in common? Music, food, tv shows, books and even some favorites like movie stars and passtimes. They really shared more then he'd realized and he'd been so sure it was just a passing thing, but now he was sure that their realtionship could be more; that his feelings weren't going to go away on thier own. What of her though? Did she feel the same way?
Awwww.... Kagomes knight in shining armor....lol.... yeah but good chappie... keep um coming 3nodding

Who's Carolina?

[Carolina is my character. In all truth, that is actually my name in spanish. If you have read my other story A Time Away, you'll understand her better. I know it's a very long story, but it explains her character much MUCH better then this story does as she is a more minor character in this story and doesn't appear very often. Only those who have read that story will be able to understand Carolina's part in this story as well as some of the rather... unusual things that can and might happen in the story when she's around.]

Chapter Four

Inuyasha paced in the small living room.

"Stop it already before you wear a rut into the floor." Inuyasha scolwed slightly at his elder half brother who sat on the blue couch; Miroku sat in a recliner.

"Dude, for once, listen to Sesshomaru!" Inuyasha stopped pacing to reguard his friend with a half scowl half amusement.

"It's obvious you are in deep little brother." Sesshomaru said with a slight smirk.

"Look who's talking! You can't keep your eyes off Carolina Hero!" Sesshomaru averted his gaze, color seeping into his cheeks. Miroku burst out laughing.

"What are you laughing at? You can't even keep your hands to yourself around any woman; especially Sango Kumachi." Miroku's laughter died and Inuyasha shook his head. It was true; his friend had the bad habit of gropping nearly every woman he met after asking them to bear his children. Sango was the only one who could keep him in line for any length of time. The only woman Miroku hadn't approached was Carolina and that was because of Sesshomaru who'd protected her the first day she'd come. Miroku had always suspected that she was different and he'd been there with Inuyasha and Sesshomaru when a strange woman had barged in for the sole purpose of killing Carolina. A strange battle had ensued there and the living room had been trashed before an exhausted Carolina had driven the attacker off and then after that she'd repaired what had been demolished. She'd confessed the truth then, revealing an alien nature and origin; a guarded secret known only to them. That was a well kept secret just as she knew thier own. Miroku, decended from a line of cursed monks that had been placed by a demon that still lived somewhere. Sesshomaru, he was a full blooded demon and Inuyasha, his half brother, was half demon; his silvery hair hiding the pair of dog ears he had on his head.

A secret he'd revealed once to Kikyo before she'd died and that secret had died with her. A knock at the door neraly made Inuyasha jump out of his skin. Sesshomaru answered the door in his dark blue t-shirt and jeans as he was expecting Carolina. When he opened the door, Carolina stood there in a blue dress; the skirt swirled around her knees just barely above them. Her hair, shoulder length, fell in soft waves and was tucked behind her ears; a white rose was tucked in her hair above her right ear. Sesshomaru just stood where he was, struck by her beauty.

"Don't just stand there." Miroku murmured as he got up and nudged him in the ribs before smiling at Carolina.

"Hello Sesshomaru, Miroku. I hope you don't mind, but I brought some friends to keep you boys company." Miroku opened his mouth to protest only to have no sound come out when he saw Sango in a slim black dress; her hair, usually pinned up, fell gracefully over her shoulders. Behind her was Kagome in a deep green dress simular to Carolina's, but the dress didn't have shoulders; leaving her shoulders bare.

"Inu... yasha...." Miroku said slowly. "Man, come here." He was trying not to stumble over himself as Sesshomaru moved out the door with Carolina at his side. Inuyasha went to the door and froze. She was beautiful and seeing her in the dresse made him feel the fool in the khaki shorts and white t-shirt he was wearing.

"So, where are we off to this time?" Sesshomaru was asking as they got into her red chevy.

"To church, they're having a festival with all sorts of games and.... Oh don't look at me like that..." Carolina's voice became muffled as she got into the car and started it.

Miroku stepped back, trying not to gape at Sango.

"Ladies..." He said with some difficulty." The two came in and the four of them sat down. Sango sat down in the recliner and Miroku plopped down on the arm of the chair, unable to take his eyes off her. Kagome and Inuyasha were left to sit on the love seat.

"Well, this was unexpected." Miroku said after a long pause. Inuyasha glanced at his friend in slight jealousy; at least he was in something more decent. Miroku wore a dark navy shirt and jeans that only served to make Inuyasha fell that much more uncomfortable as he sat next to Kagome.

"It was Carolina's idea. I don't know how she talked me into this. I feel... silly." Sango said.

"Well, you look stunning." Miroku said.

"I wish she would have warned us though, I mean, I wasn't exactly expecting company." Inuyasha grumbled.

"Well, she didn't exactly tell me either; she just kinda dropped in, told me to change into this dress she had for me without saying why and then ushered me out the door." Kagome said. Inuyasha stared at her for a moment.

"For not being warned you managed to come out looking like a prom date." She smiled slightly, not exactly sure if he meant that as a complement or not. Inuyasha got up and left the room; he came back several minutes later in a pair of blue jeans that were slightly faded and his leather jacket. He tossed a pair of keys at Miroku who gave him a look of graditude before turning back to Sango; Miroku had been grounded from his car so Inuyasha figured he'd let his friend have his for tonight. He knew his friend wouldn't dent it or anything.

"Do you want to go for a ride?" Inuyasha asked.

"Sure." Kagome replied and got up.

"Hungry?" Miroku asked Sango.

"Yeah."

"I know a place we can go."

"I hope you don't mean a strip bar." Miroku looked at her abashed.

"Certainly not! Do you really thing that little of me?" Kagome followed Inuyasha out to the back of the house while Miroku and Sango went out the front.

"Do you have a preference?" He asked a bit nervously.

"Well, I did enjoy riding on the bike if that's what you mean." He felt a surge of relief. Kikyo had hated his motorcycle and refused to ride on it. He led her to the black bike and handed her a red helment before grabbing a black one for himself. She mounted behind him as he set the motor roaring to life; startled a bit, she clung to him, which only made him smile as he turned the bike towards a dirt alleyway and sped off into the street. Kagome felt a thrill as the wind whipped through her hair; she leaned up against him for warmth, laying her head against him. He felt warm shivers go through him and he knew in his mind it wouldn't be long before he wouldn't be able to resist the urge to take her in his arms and kiss her.

Sango stared at him in surprise when the waiter had gone.

"I... I never once thought.... I mean... this is amazing!!!" Miroku smiled slightly.

"It helps when your parents own the place." Her eyes went wide.

"They OWN this?!?!"

"Yeah, I"m use to coming here as my parents hold family reunions and lots of business meetings here."

"No wonder they acted as if you came in reguarly!"

"Yeah, just one of a few things few people know about me."

"I suppose I've a lot to learn then." She smiled as she said so teasingly; he only laughed.

There's more truth to that then you know. He thought to himself.

Sesshomaru shook his head in wonder as he chased her around the church from game to game. He actually had to admit that he was having fun. After a few hourse of games she turned to him.

"Hungry?"

"Yeah, I know just the place." He smiled as he handed her the stuffed white tiger he'd won for her. She handed him the keys to her car and the two went out of the church; Carolina wondered all the while where he planned to take her. She hugged the stuffed tiger before setting it into the backseat as he started the car.

"So, where are we going?" She asked after a while, the drive had been companionably silent before then.

"You'll see." He answered cryptically. There was a comfortable silence that followed. She began to get a bit nervous though when he drove out of town and then, about an hour later, she saw it; a beautiful mansion sitting on a hill. The windows were lit dimly with a homely sort of apperance instead of a scary one. She stared at it in awe as he parked the car in the driveway and a man opened her door for her. She climbed out; still staring. Carolina followed Sesshomaru silently into the manison and into a sitting room near the end of a long hallway. In the room was a small table with with a white cloth on it; a single rose stood in the middle of the table between two candles. At one end of the room was a collection of art and to her left, at the other end, was a fireplace witha roaring fire and adeep green couch before it with a fur rug near the hearth. Large windows ran along the other wall and over looked a large garden.

"This is...." Carolina said breathlessly. It was beautiful. He smiled and took her hand in his as he led her to the table. He pulled out the chair for her and she sat down.

"You own this?"

"Yes, I bought it a few years ago." He smiled slightly as he sat down and dishes were brought out. Fish, bread, salad, mashed potatoes and corn. Mushroom sooup and shrimp with dip. There was also steak and for desert was cheesecake topped with cherries and cherry syurp. Carolina was delighted with the meal as she saw the elaborate feast he'd set up for them.

"This is wonderful!"

The delight in her eyes and in her voice made him smiled.

"I'm gald you enjoy it." After the meal a man came in with a violin and began to play. Sesshomaru got up and went over to her and held out his hand to her. She didn't hesitate to take it and stand up. He put one hand around her waist and was going to take her other hand into his, but she'd wrapped her arms around his neck, so he put his other arm around her waist as well. His gaze met hers as they swayed to the music. She smiled before laying her head against his chest; he did sort of tower over her, but that had never bothered her. Other girls had only admired him from afar and had been almost fearful of him because of his heigth and the strange markings on his cheeks and forehead. The purple stripes on his cheek marked him a dog demon and the purple cresent moon marked his bloodline. Being a half demon, Inuyasha possessed neither and with a mold of teeth and folding his ears into his hair he'd been more readily accepted as "normal" despite that his claws couldn't be hidden. Carolina had never been shy except when she'd first met him. Yet it was when he realized she wasn't scared that he'd become intregued. They'd nearly been a couple for about a year now. Even when the song ended she didn't let go of him. He had manuvered her over to the couch where both of them now stood on the rug. The violinist had left them alone, but neither seemed to notice. He moved slightly, letting go of her to sit down and she followed him. She slipped off her shoes and tucked her legs beneath her as she curled up next to him. He put an arm around her, wondering how it was that she fit next to him as if she'd been made to despite the vast differences between them. Just as he thought to kiss her she looked up at him; he didn't hesitate to pull her into his lap and wrap his arms around her before he kissed her gently. He'd never known to long for anything in his life as he'd felt a longing all night to kiss her and to hold her in his arms.

He felt a thrill of pleasure as she wrapped her arms around him. He held her closer as he deepened the kiss, something he knew was a risk, but she didn't push him away. Carolina was enthralled in the kiss; tingling with pleasure from her head down to her toes and and as he deepend the kiss a hunger began to grow between them. One neither had experince before nor had ever thought to until that moment. One Sesshomaru fought with all his will while Carolina examined her own in nervous wonderment as they held each other with only the sound of the fire cackling mercilessly. A symbol of what raged within them.
