Rules for Entering

All entries must include at least one of Sabin and/or Kamiki's characters.
All artwork submitted for the contest must be ORIGINAL works by YOU. Any instances of art theft will result in the person entering being disqualified and reported. If you have an artist friend who is not on Gaia that is willing to enter on your behalf, then please please have them submit the work themsleves via email (arania(@)kamiki(dot)net). Be sure they clearly state the name they want to be credited for and which Gaia username they are entering on behalf of.
All artwork must be drawn specifically for this contest - If you drew for us before, then you can not submit a previously-drawn piece. In that note, if you happened to draw a character who resembles one of our characters, you may not submit that.
The contest ends July 14,2005(Sabin's 2-year Gaiaversary) at 11:59 pm. At this point, a WIP (work in progress) may be submitted for preliminary judging purposes with a request for an extention. The extention will be given up until July 31, 2005 at 11:59 pm for the FINAL version to be submitted. The awards ceremony will take place probably a few days after the final extention, at date/time TBA.
Both graphical artwork of ANY medium and writing entries are viable for this contest. See the FAQ if you have any questions about what sort of writing is valid. The only exception is the following rule:
NO Dolls or Avatar edits except if submitting an animated piece. If you are doing an animation and use a doll, please credit and link back to the place where you got the base for the doll.
Each entry is only eligible to win one prize. Priority is, of course, given to the higher value prize that a piece is eligible for. However, each artist can potentially win multiple prizes if they enter multiple pieces.
Each category must have at least 5 entries for the full prize to be awarded. For example, on prizes that have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize, 5 entries will only get the 3rd place prize award, 10 entries, the 2nd and 3rd, and 15 or more, all 3 prizes will be awarded. This can be waved at the end of the contest as per judge's discretion.
You may post a WIP (work in Progress) or a revision of an entry, but when you do, do not use the entry form - it will just cause confusion ><. Only use the entry form when you are submitting your actual entry (for the first time).
When showing a WIP (or even before you begin), you may ask Kamiki or Sabin for feedback or critiques, or ask questions if something comes up that was not on the characters' profile pages. We can let you know if we spot an error, etc. We (Sabin and/or Kamiki) will not critique/correct a WIP unless specifically asked to do so.
If you do not want anyone to comment on or critique your work, then please say so when posting the image.
Entries that contain mature content (above a PG-13 rating) CAN NOT be displayed or submitted here. You MUST PM them to Sabin Duvert or e-mailed to arania(at)kamiki(dot)net! Don't forget you must still include your entry form! They will be edited or censored as much as needed before being displayed on the Entries page as per Gaia TOS. If you're not sure if your peice is above PG-13, just remember its better to be safe than sorry!
Participation prizes will be given out to everyone who enters (shortly after the first entry they submit) ^^. These will be randomly selected small items such as 2005 anniversary ball items or the glowing green vials. These will most likely be given out in batches after an update to the entries page, so don't bug us if you don't get one immediately after submitting your entry.

Rules for The Thread

Please read the first page before asking questions. The FAQ should answer a lot. If you have a question not in the rules or FAQ, then you are welcome to ask in the thread (do not PM questions).
If you are going to comment or critique another person's piece or WIP (work in progress) that they have posted, keep the comments constructive. Don't just say "OMG that's great!" Say what you like about it. On the same note, don't say something like "That sucks!". You may give some polite critiques on the entry unless the person submitting it declines feedback. Let's keep a positive, encouraging environment here!
Check the drama at the door. Arguments or other personal matters should not be discussed in the thread.
Bumping and chit-chat is highly encouraged!
IF, when the contest is over, you have questions as to why judgements were made on which entries win - then come to us and ask privately.

The first time I looked at this pic, it didn't really jump out at me. I don't know why. But starting to judge entries later, it was like I was seeing it for the first time. Maybe its because I don't generally like bathing suit pieces? I'm not sure, but upon a second look, this picture stole my heart. She looks so ALIVE in that picture. The motion and the S-curve of her body. Yum. Very nice.

And yes, she's sticking out her tongue at you because you're staring at her pull out the bikini wedgy. Don't try to deny it.

I about fell out of my chair when I saw this. I LOVE Kimaya's style - and it suits Kamiki so well. This piece is amazing. It's time for the Joint-categories! These are entries that were co-decided on by Kamiki AND me, and both of us contributed about equally the prizes for them smile . We added a COUPLE of categories, and there were a lot of hard decisions here as well.

BEST SONG:
This was a category that was virtually being begged to be created. One media that we honestly didn't expect to receive was musical entries - and we certainly didn't turn it away. IT's so neat to have something personal created like that - something that from time to time pops up on my winamp and I smile to myself and think of the characters - a song that was truly written FOR them.

Pumpkinscones really hit the feel of a very specific scene from the storyline with his song - the lyrics were SO characteristic, so poignant to the anju's first real social encounter with Samantha, and the piece of music itself has such a beautiful feel to it.

Neobakeneko spent SO much time, love, and effort on this story - reweaving (with minor changes to change things up and make it more of a surprise for Kamiki and I as the readers) the begining of the Victorian Legends campaign. Her project was QUITE endeavorous, and has some simply WONDERFUL dialogue in particular. I especially love in fact the opening scene - the way that she introduces Sabin's backstory between pulls at his drink as he tries to drown his memories in alcohol biggrin

Sosiqui wove a masterful story here - both the story itself AND within the story, ironically. This story is exciting, dramatic, suspenseful, and above all characterizes the Ravenloft setting SO WELL. The themes in the story - a twisted desire, the spread of a madness - all seem so characteristic to the setting that I could see it integrated into one of the setting books flawlessly. I reccomend this story to anyone - whether they know Vastella or not - who is looking for a good read.

Sajhiri earns the top prize for MOST ROMANTIC with flying colors. Posted below is just hte FIRST panel of her 7-page illustrated story - as Sabin visits Samantha's grave after her death. Reading the story alone brought tears to my eyes, and with the illustrations and sepia, and font - it brims to the top with emotion, and love - you can feel Sabin's love and his loss - expressed with such a knolwedge of all of the characters' natures. And to compliment it, her Pencil piece of Sabin and kamiki almost seems to complete the emotion of the story - years later, finding happiness again, lying comfortably in eachothers arms - but the photographs symbolizing to never forget the memory of Sasmantha, but cherishing the happiness of the present as well.

Bio: Smart, inquisitive, and with a longing to know more about the world, Sabin knew he couldn't stay in his tiny French hometown his whole life. His dabbling in the occult and unhealthy obsession with monsters eventually cost his dearly; losing someone important to him and nearly costing himself his life and sanity. Posessed by a terrifying Nightmare creature called an Anju, Sabin had to learn the only way to keep his darker half from winning control of his life was to merge with it.

Bio: Gavin is the accidental (shh..don't tell him that) child of Kamiki and Sabin. Being both of Anju and Kitsune, he's trouble spelled with a capitol T. He loves to gauge people's reactions to things. He'll invoke said reaction by any means: hair pulling, shoving, name-calling, lying...its all fair game to him. He's also do more subtle things, such as purposely playing on a person's pet peeve, to get the reaction he wants. He has a kitsune's vanity and trickster nature, and also has an Anju's need to manipulate, control, and mind-gaming. All this being said, he's not really an evil child. Just.. quarky. Highly intelligent and charasmatic, he also inherited his mother and father's charm and friendly nature (most of the time).

Determined to find a pack of his own one day, he eventually met Nyx, an older female who he was would soon have pups with. Taking his puppies and his few closest friends, Akui has now formed his own loving pack to be the Alpha of.

Akui may be drawn with: His mate, Nyx, and or his son, Vashin, and/or with his full litter of puppies (Vashin, Maiara, and Harlequin).

Bio: Vastella was the most reknowned Vistani for Taroka reading. It was her true gift, and she was the best the Vistani had seen in generations. However, tho stricktly forbidden to read cards for other Vistani, Vastella did a reading for her lover because she feared for his life. The cards gave the answer: he would die. Despite her best efforts to stop it, a freak accident the next day killed him. Since the elders believed her reading cemented his grisly fate, they banished Vastella from the Vistani.

Who She Knows: Her best friend, and the only person she currently trusts completely, Richelle.

A: No problem ^_^. I will accept artwork in ANY way you can get it to me ^^. First off, you can try the free image hosting at www.photobucket.com - BUT I know that it limits the space you have, and if you have a high quality image you may not want to use it. Also, if you want, you can email me a piece at arania(at)kamiki.net. I (Sabin) am collecting the artwork since I am the one compiling and hosting the images. The standard way to submit, of course, is posting to the thread. You CAN PM me an image IF YOU HAVE TO - but I would really prefer if you are already hosting the image to just post it so there's less chance I'll lose track of it ^_~ Finally, if you have NO scanning method and you're really desperate and you did it in real media, you could mail it to me as long as it got here before the date. Q: Is there an entry fee?
A: Certainly NOT! You shouldn't have to pay me to draw for me - quite the opposite!

Q: Does it have to be in color?
A: No! Not at all - some of the best pictures I've seen are done with high-detail black and white!

Q: what media can I use?
A: Any media you like! Pencil, pen, markers, watercolors, CG of all types, glitter and glue, I'm not picky ^^

Q: Can I write instead of draw?
A: Yes! We accept -all- forms of art, including Writing if that's your forte ^_^. Writing is definately considered an art form and writing entries will be qualified for any category it is applicable for.

Q: What do you mean by writing entry? What can I write?
A:We accept any sort of writing: poetry, vignettes, short stories, (long stories?), etc. When writing a story, think about the leeway people generally have when writing a fan fiction based around something. You can, for example, focus on a point in the given plotline and go into detail about something that happened, make up a situation that follows the plotline, deviate from the plotline with some creative liscence to shape a story, or even make an alternate universe, blending some of the settings (or "moving" a character to the setting - such as Sabin being swept into the mists of Ravenloft) of multiple characters from the contest who normally don't know eachother. Stories can also take place at ANY point in their backgrounds. You can also deviate from the backgrounds given, but try to make it so that the character is still, well, themselves - don't just totally rewrite a background changing significant events and the characters' personality. For example, you could say that Sabin was born, instead, in Ravenloft or in the modern times - but keeping the same basic situation the same.

Q: Can I submit an entry that's a combination of writing and drawing - like a story with an illustration?
A: Sure!

Q: WTF? Samantha is married to Sabin, and yet Kamiki is his lover? Is Sabin playing them?
A: Noooo..... Short and simple is that Sabin and Samantha were a couple and then married in the 1870's. According to the Victorian Legends storyline they would have lived up to the modern era.
In the Gaia storyline, Samantha died sometime around the modern times and Sabin found his way to Gaia where he met Kamiki and had a son with her named Gavin (not to be confused with the dog by the same name that Arania and Jerri co-own).

Q: Uhm... I've got a question about one of your characters/is there anything wrong with this entry so far?
A: You are WELCOME to ask either of us any questions regarding our characters - though please read through their full profiles first to see if it's already answered. Likewise, if you ask us to, we can make suggestions or any corrections to a WIP (work in progress). This is an option available to anyone who enters, so do not feel like you're cheating or anything for asking our input. However, just because a work has been critiqued of errors or suggestions made does not necessarily guarentee it a win ^_~.

Q: Can I change their outfit?
A: Certainly! Have fun ^_^.

Q: Can I draw/write another character into the picture/scene who they don't normally "know"?
A: Yes - these are considered "crossover" categories. However, some might be more viable than others. For example, just a random pic with, for example, Simon and Angelina might not make much sense. But if you wanted to do a full cast of one of our characters, or an involved crossover with implied reasons that they meet up (especially writing) then have fun smile

Q: Can I do an... erm... piece that's above PG-13?
A: yes you can. HOWEVER, do not post them directly on the thread. I reccomend emailing them to me at
arania(at)kamiki.net (reccomended) or PM'ng them to me. I will confirm with you in the method that you sent it that I received them. These entries will be censored before posted to the entries page in order to not violate Gaia TOS, however for prize consideration the uncensored versions will be the ones judged.

Q: If I win something, can I sell the prize I win?
A: Yes - you can do whatever you want with your prize. If you won gold I wouldn't expect for it to sit in your inventory ^_~. The prize is meant as a reward and if you would rather trade/sell it for something you want more, then by all means do so! If you win grand prize and you'd rather have the gold instead of nm miniwings, then sell it to get what you want - you deserve it! The ONLY exception to this is the GMFC appointment. If you win that, you can give it to a friend, keep it for yourself, but you cannot sell that.

Q: Can I enter more than once?

A: Yes, that's kinda the point >.>

Q: Wow! You've got miniwings! Can I buy them for ten million gold?
A: NO! This is the prize of the contest. To me, it's as good as spent, and will NOT be sold under any condition, no matter how valuable it gets between now and the end of the contest. It will be the winner's to do with as they please smile . The same goes for any other prize listed. I will NOT sell ANY of the prizes listed in the contest.

Q: Can I submit a piece I drew for one of you before?
A: NO. All pieces submitted to this contest must be new for the contest. However, if you've drawn one of us before, all the better and you've had practice ^_~. The only exception to this is for artwork that we may have made arrangements for already, but the artist has opted to reneg on payment in order to take their chances as a contest entry. Also, any artwork that has already been completed and shown to us before February 22, the begining of this thread, is not eligible for this.

Q: If I win the "miniwings or GMFC appointment" grand prize for one of the judges, and the person who wins the other judge's wants to get the miniwings, do I have to take the GMFC option?
A: Nope smile . We have two sets of nightmare miniwings set aside, and will create up to 3 GMFC appointments (the two grand prizes, and one for the linking contest).

Q: If I win a GMFC appointment, can I give it to a friend?
A: Yes - if you win a GMFC appointment, you can give it to a friend, but not sell it.

Q: What is a Character Template?
A: A character template, also known as a model sheet, is a single page that graphically (with some text sometimes) conveys everything that another artist needs to know to draw the character. It usually has a picture of them from the front and the back and several facial expressions at a minimum. If there is anything special about the character - specific items alternate forms, etc - it covers it (usually with inserts and close-ups.) Characters with multiple forms could have multiple sheets for their different forms. Our goal for this category is to be able to get some GOOD character templates for our characters that we could, for example, hand out to artists at conventions. These could be done for the range of a characters' forms, or focusing on a single form smile

These are some concepts for artwork that have been on our minds. These are by no means -all- that we want to see in the contest, but might earn some kudos points ^~. Things will be removed from the list if we get an entry that really nailed it for us, or added if an idea strikes us smile

Sabin'd Like to See:
~Note: Sabin is on a major Ambrose kick atm, and would love much good Ambrose art/writing in any of his forms heart
~ A neat crossover story with Sabin meeting Ambrose in some way or fashion
~ Spiffin Transformation Pieces of characters (especially Ambrose and Sabin) from one form to another
~ A darker, dramatic piece of Ambrose facing what he is/what he's becoming
~ Ambrose in mostly human form with his new "look" - lupine eyes, small round blue glasses, and a thin goatee - especially alongside Angelina with HER new outfit.
~ A picture of Arania with her puppy, Gavin
~ Arania and Jerri
~ A dark, mysterious piece of Richelle
~ Richelle and ghosts.
~ A HUGE group piece of all the characters! twisted
~ Stories! 4laugh
~ Story themes I LOVE: discovery (how they find out about being something other than human, and then dealing with it - reactions!), esp with Ambrose and Sabin: coming to terms with what they are, and being supernatural in a relatively normal/low magic setting: a setting where magic isn't believed in or is held in high suspicion. Hunters (esp with Ambrose where he hasn't quite come to terms with what he is himself yet). Also - revealing what they are to someone else - reactions!!!

Kamiki'd Like to See:

~ Gushy romantic pictures between Angelina/Ambrose, Kamiki/Sabin, and Jerri/Arania
~ Stories! 4laugh
~ Sexy/pin-up/rique/pain naughty pics of Kamiki, alone or with Sabin and/or Simon twisted
