Unsigned Letter
Stage: Teen
Stage: Adult
A warm breeze stirred the gossamer curtains at the upstairs window beside Sari's bed, and she smiled for no reason other than that she knew it would soon be summer. She had no light in the room; it seemed so much more peaceful that way somehow. She shrugged into a short cotton dress; I'll sunbathe today, was her happy thought as girly giggling drifted up.
Crawling back onto the bed, she gazed down onto the street; sure enough, it was Raphael with a girl. Sari chuckled softly to herself; as the young girl below waved goodbye to him. It was a different one from yesterday. The boy had no shame.
Still feeling rather euphoric, Sari ambled lightly downstairs and met him in the front hall. He stood with an opened letter in his hand, head bowed as his eyes skimmed across the page. Something in his pose alerted Sari that perhaps all was not right with the world, as she had felt only moments before.
"Angel? What is it?"
Raphael looked up, a slight frown on his brow. "Well...I don't know exactly," he slowly responded. "I found this on the doorstep; there was no name on the envelope, and there's no signature on the letter. Here," he said, handing it over. "I don't really know what to make of it. Could even be a joke Sari, I suppose."
The handwriting was hasty, but the paper was of good quality vellum...ah well, the neighborhood was a rich one; it could still be only a prank.
Baird is in danger. Come to the Crystal City, and come quickly. Leave the name of his House behind you.
It was unsigned. Not even a cheesy "A Well Wisher" or "A Friend" at the bottom. When she looked up, Raphael was watching her, blue eyes unreadable. Although he had never met the man, the Angelic knew what Baird meant to her.
"Have you heard from him at all lately?" came the low query.
"No," was the equally quiet response.
Sari struggled internally. It was silly, it was a prank! There was nothing wrong with Baird...no need to go galloping off just because some unsigned letter told her to. Except...
It was that "except" that got her. What if something happened to him, and she had done nothing? The thought was agony.
"Well, you did mention visiting him, back even before Christmas; now seems as good a time as any to do it," Raphael suggested tentatively. He was giving her an excuse to go that didn't sound completely and utterly retarded. He was rewarded with an impulsive and slightly desperate hug.
"You're right, Angel. Now would be a good time to go, I think. But the trip will take us at least a week, if I can remember correctly; so I need to make some arrangements."
Raphael watched her silently as she began to jot down things to purchase and things to pack, swallowing frequently in an attempt to push down the anxiety.
"Is there anything I can do to help?" he asked at last, and once again Sari felt the odd flash that he was so much older than he looked. Something not in his face, but...she didn't know how to explain. The golden feathers and halo winked shyly in the sunlight that filtered through the curtains. Maybe she had her explanation after all.
He caught her glance, and there was empathy in his gaze. In that moment she felt so very close to him - closer than even before he had grown and begun acting strangely around her. It was on the tip of her tongue to ask him what had changed so much that he watched her like he did. Yes, there just on the tip; but he looked away, and the moment was gone.
Once more, her pen skipped along the page. She didn't have time for introspection anyhow.
