Unexpected Dream
</center>
<center>
Nothing could have seemed more odd as I loomed awake that morning, stricken with strange thoughts in my mind over a previous dream. All that I could remember were small details, of what I thought to be normal things. A light flutter of wings, followed by a flurry of feathers left behind, then all turned silent. Things of that nature would not seem unusual to most, but as for me, they did. There was more to the dream however. After the long moments of silence lingered on, a delicate harmony of native-like music soon became audible. It was beautiful to the ears and unlike anything I had ever heard before. Alas, the music suddenly came to an abrupt stop, and that was when I awoke. Was the dream trying to tell me something? I wondered...
As I showered and dressed myself that morning, I still could not get my mind off of the dream. Try as I may to shake it out of my thoughts, it would not go away. I sighed and peered outside my window, thankful to see the warm rays of sunshine, but a little weary of the clouds lingering in the distance. A pleasant walk to the gardens only a couple of acres away seemed like a nice idea on a day like this. With that thought in mind, I quickly grabbed my coat and was outdoors before I knew it.
The morning was still young, with early sunshine pouring across the valley, filling it with warmth. All was the silent but the relaxing trickle of the stream running down the hills, and the birds filling in its musical gap with their song. I noticed these gifts of nature with pleasure, and silently made my way towards the gardens, aware of the creatures about the area still trying to soak in their last few moments of slumber.
As I walked through a thick bunch of oakwood trees, I suddenly made myself still, eyes wide with surprise. Apparently I had awoken a family of sleeping sparrows, who had taken flight in utter alarm. I let out a deep breath, feeling guilty for disturbing the peace of such harmless creatures. It was then that I realized I was standing amidst a flurry of feathers, quite like the ones that had appeared in my dream. I reached out with my hand and caught one of the sparrow's feathers as it floated awkwardly to the ground. I caught another feather with my free hand and compared the two together. They had similarities, yet the first one I examined seemed strangely more vibrant and full of familiarity than the other. I carefully looked up from the two feathers laying in my palms and gazed into the close distance. There was the silence, again, just like my dream. Feeling somewhat creeped out now, I placed the two feathers on the ground where they were meant to lay, and edged forward through the narrow spaces ahead of me. Perhaps there was something that I needed to see..
I found myself in a small clearing, completely surrounded by the large oakwood trees that the sparrows had taken roost in. Sunshine now blazing down upon the clear, crisp air. I wiped a bit of sweat from my forehead and brought a hand up to shield my eyes as I looked curiously towards the trees. I squinted and looked even closer, but nothing remained there as far as I could see. Retreating my hands down into my pockets, I turned to go back home. Perhaps I needed a good rest, as the day was rolling by far too strange.
Then, all most as if on cue, a tender voice rang out, breaking into musical notes of uniquely beautiful tones. I turned, and was surprised to see that the voice had come from the throat of a small house sparrow. My expression widened with awe and fascination. This creature perched in front of me was unlike any other. Its voice was clear and full as it chirped through its musical song, and, as it looked at me, it seemed to have a twinkle in its eye. So this was not a normal sparrow, I took on. It seemed to have a beating personality, unlike any other bird I had come across before.
"Your song is beautiful," I smiled as I greeted this creature. It stopped and looked thoughtfully towards me for a moment. Its hazel eyes locked with my own, and for that brief moment I felt a strange connection between the two of us. It broke our sudden silence with a sweet chirp, and fluttered from its roost onto a branch closer to me. I gleamed as I got a closer look at the small bird, taking on that is was female. She was quite adorable. Plump feathers forming a beatiful pattern of colors throughout her body, and small dark talons resembling the same color of her beak.
I slowly stepped forward closer to the sparrow, wondering if she would trust me enough to not fly away like the sparrows earlier had done. To my surprise, she did not move or twitch, and instead greeted my presence with a playful tune. I gently raised my fingertips towards her, and she hopped onto them immediately, clamping her frail claws around my two fingers to keep her steady balance. This was utterly unbelievable, as I chuckled and shook my head. Perhaps dreams truly are for real.
