Welcome to Gaia! ::

When people are talking and then somone out of nowhere says something that has nothing to do with the topic, we would usually call this very random and laugh.

BUT, as the conversation goes on, our minds go on a tangent, something reminds us of something else and on and on and the resulting in something totally off topic. So it's actually no random because there is logic to the outcome of your statement.

All is random
*randomly punches self in balls.
I don't think any actions are ever truly random. Even the really ******** up ones are usually either becuase the person is confused or is just trying to illicit a reaction.

Humans have trouble with true randomness. because we pick are favorit numbers, or name ect. even if we don't know we are doing it.
Nothing is random, but things are either decided through motive, or chance. Someone might me motivated to speak up during a converstaion on a topic that has no meaning because they feel that will gain them the respect of their peers, or feel the need to speak out (real speak: attention whore) but nothing in that sense is random. As far as chance goes, someone might say that a train falling of the tracks is random, but there was a certin chance that the railings, or wheels might have failed, and everyone on it has decided to take that chance.
I prefer the idea of chaos to randomness (read up on Chaos theory if you dont' know what I'm talking about)
Basically events seem that they should be causally detirministic because of a necessary lack of agency among those things that exist.

The issue of quantum theory is an interesting one, but basically it seems to me that the view of quantum mechanics we currently hold is most likely merely a cover-up, as it were, for our lack of knowledge regarding the truely detirministic physicaly mechanics that would otherwise govern the behavior of certain sub-atomic particles--in short, explaining via randomness those events for which we have no other explanation.
I have no evidence of that, it is merely my suspicion at present.

For a nice concise objection to quantum theory (not entirely convincing, but a good start) look to Schrodinger's thought experiment with the cat (I can explain this, too, if you dont' know and are interested. www.wikipedia.com is a good source as well).

*sigh*

when someone says something random, it is usually a reflection of their unconcious thoughts. if you found yourself saying that you hate someone without realizing what you said, it means that you have a negative feeling towards the person, even if your not even aware of it

no, i think you're right...well, in the conversation-area kinda thing...which is what you're talking about...so yes...
Watch Napoleon Dynamite. Look out for the cow.

That is random.

Nope, you're right. Our decisions, actions and lives in general are all dictated by the trillions of instances that effect us every moment. Nothing is random, not even randomizer.org! xd Our lives are on invisible rails, and though it isnt the same as fate or destiny, we will always do the same things, even if you rewound time to the big bang and let it play from there, everything works out the same.

NO! BAD n00b! Not on the CARPET!

Anyway, This reminds me of an old Dilbert comic, I forgot how it went 'zactly but it involved a "random-number troll" or somthing and he just kept saying "nine, nine, nine, nine, nine..." over and over. Dilbert askes "Are you sure that's random?" and the other accounting troll answers "Thats the thing about randomness, you can never be sure"

(The comic was funnier)
Random is a weird word... I think that out there somewhere something can be random... my thoughts are random.... I go from one topic to the next with out thinking about the fact that i'm jumping between thoughts like that... for someone to say something completely off topic is random... the fact that people may continue on the random insert might not be random but the insert itself is random to the conversation... but to the person saying the insert it probably came fromm a random thought... which means that they were thinking about it before they said it... which would technically not be random.... now if i've confused you it's ok b/c i'm confused myself....
Randomness is relative. (Moreso than morality.)

If people are having a conversation about mayonnaise, and you randomly mention something about a turtle you had when you were eight, the others perceive randomness.
