Lesson 3: Parts of Speech - Nouns
People, places, and some things are proper nouns. Proper nouns follow their own special capitalization scheme, which is generally such that the first letter of each word, except articles, is capitalized. This, however, allows for the exception noted in lesson one, where a sentence might not begin with a capital letter. Take, for instance, the website eBay. eBay is a proper noun, so its capitalization is special. The sentence just then was an example of the exception.

Not all places are proper nouns; School, home, and park would be considered places, I believe. >>;;

... Ehr, yeah. Whoops. ::fixes::
Wow, something in CB that deserves to be bumped eek

Wow, something in CB that deserves to be bumped eek

It probably shouldn't be in CB, but I figured CB was the place it should be to even try to get the proper audience.
YAY!

Thank you. I am fed up with people using ... 'n00b-speak.' I am my own town's Garmmar Nazi.
Not like most people in CB would really give a care about this, but if they do, you've got a great thing going. 3nodding

Good luck with it.

Lesson 6: Parts of Speech - Pronouns

Pronouns are, quite possibly, the most complex part of speech in the English language. This is interesting, as it stems a kind of watered-down version of the declension system in other languages. That is, the pronoun you use to describe a thing varies upon its usage in the sentence.

Case
N = Nominative (loosely: Subject)
A = Accusative (loosely: Object)

Number
S = Singular
P = Plural

.------.------.-----.------.
| NS | NP | AS | AP |
|------|------|-----|------|
First person | I | We | Me | Us |
|------|------|-----|------|
Second person | You | You | You | You |
|------|------|-----|------|
Third person | She/ | They |Him/ | Them |
| He/ | | Her/| |
| It | | It | |
'------'------'-----'------'

I saw you. I saw her. He saw you. She saw us. They saw them. We saw you (all).

A common error is when you have more than one subject. The error is: "My friend and me saw something." That should be the first person nominative singular -- thus, "My friend and I".

When dealing with the copula ["being verb" -- see next lesson], both the "subject" and the "object" use the nominative case. The reason for this is that there is no specific distinction of order necessary in such a construct. An example would be answering the phone:
"Hello?" "Hello, is [so and so] there?" "This is s/he."
Note the use of the nominative, as opposed to the accusative "him" or "her".

Also, a table of possessives for you:
.------.--------.
| S | P |
|------|--------|
First person | My | Our |
|------|--------|
Second person | Your | Your |
|------|--------|
Third person | His/ | Theirs |
| Her/ | |
| Its | |
'------'--------'

Antecedents

All pronouns require an antecedent - even if just implied. An antecedent is what the pronoun refers to. For first and second person pronouns, there is no question. With the third, though, there can be confusion if you're not a native English speaker. Often, the addition of -self allows a second pronoun to refer back to the same antecedent as another. "He gave him a cookie" is different, then, from "He gave himself a cookie."

Added-a-lesson-bump.
You are doing a great job. If I get some gold, I will donate it here. If there is any way that I can help you try and spread around these lessons to grammar abusing n00bs, feel free to send me a PM. ^^
Lesson 7: Parts of Speech - The Copula will be coming soon; I have a shitload of schoolwork to do before the summer's over. Probably after the second day of school (Sept. 8th) -- if not, the weekend after.

I have plans for 2 more lessons, then I was thinking of doing a common spelling error lesson, really more of a list.
My God, it's 5th grade English all over again! stressed

Just kidding. I think people would benefit from this. I would donate, but I am saving up for a Kimono right now.
