“...There was nothingness. There was no earth, only vast amounts of water. No fish even swam there.”
A soft, raspy voice sliced through the thick folds of darkness that enveloped the innards of the hovel. The owner, an aging gryphon marked with paints and scars, peered down at the young charges at her paws. They were the future. They needed to hear the words passed from beak to beak since the beginning of time.
“Sky Mother slept peacefully in the clouds above and none bothered her, Sun Mother and Moon Father were far too busy with their never ending chase. Time passed quickly, and with it she became lonely. She fell from the clouds on swift, strong wings and flew over the water. With each flap, dirt rose and land formed. She made the mountains, our homes, by offering feathers to the dirt, which swallowed them up and grew higher and higher. They hardened, giving us a place to roost. She made the plains smooth, perfect for hunting.”
Her eyesight was not what it once was, but she could still see each and every young gryphon she was sitting for. This group was quite small, as only a few females inhabited this little patch of territory and fewer still had young that needed watching while during the day’s hunt. Most of the young gryphons were attentive during this particular history lesson, while two mischievous little ones were batting at each other’s tails.
The old female chuckled softly to herself before moving on.
“Once the land was made and was sturdy for walking, Sky Mother touched down and scratched the dirt with her claws. She piled it up big and it became Earth Mother, who helped her accomplish many things. Sky Mother and Earth Mother traveled far and wide and with each pawstep, life emerged from the rich soil. Trees grew tall and grass sprouted. Bushes emerged and were dotted with little berries.
And as they went, they spoke. They spoke softly and in a tongue much slower and far superior to our own as they planned the things that would live here. First they made the little ant, followed by the hungry rat, soon came the noble deer and the laughing coyote. There was the rabbit and the wolf, the eagle and the groundhog, the snake and the vulture. All sorts of creatures, big and small, were given the blessings of life.”
The tale must have been growing more interesting, because the two rambunctious offspring had stopped their shenanigans and were watching the old female.
“Dinna’ they make us?” One asked anxiously. It was not the first time they had heard this story, but they feared being left out. It would be rotten luck if the Sky Mother forgot her followers.
“”Flies ‘f brains, o’ course! Momma says they maked us’unz last for ‘cos y‘ always save the best fer last!” One of the more fidgety little ones replied before the elder could respond.
“Yes, yes, Sky Mother and Earth Mother did wait until last to create us.” She chuckled at the eager youngsters and gave each of the two a nod before she began once more.
“You see, Sky Mother wanted the perfect blend of the majestic birds of the sky, while Earth Mother wanted the power and prowess of the feline warriors of her lands. We, as you can see, are the end result. Sky Mother and Earth Mother molded us from the stone of the mountain. Sky Mother gave us our powerful wings and beaks, not to mention the ability to fly, while Earth Mother gave us our strong paws and powerful claws....
We live in the shadow of Sky Mother, forever in debt and forever cherishing, because it is she who made us what we are.” There was a deep rumble in the throat of the female gryphon as she stood and nuzzled each of the youngsters with her beak.
“Up, now. It is getting late. Your mothers should be back, soon, and hopefully with full beaks.” As she padded towards the entrance to the hovel, little curious voices followed her.
“Y’ain’ gonna tell us another story?”
“Yeah! Another!”
“W’about th’ one wi’ th’ moon’n stars?”
“Or the one ‘bout the forest?”
“Yeah! About th’ forest!”
“No, no. Not right now. Your mothers would be furious at me for giving you nightmares.” She scolded and nudged the youngster closest to her. “That is for another day, another time, as it is another tale. If I tell you now, you won’t sleep at all tonight.”
Disappointed grunts and sighs greeted the soft, warm night as the charges where led out to their mothers, who would take them to their own hovels. The next day the sun would rise on the mountains to reveal both the small groups that had formed over time and the individuals that chose to live alone and wander where they pleased.

The Gryphons:
Highly intelligent, proud, and fiercely loyal to bloodkin and clan, gryphons are common sightings along the open plains.
The average gryphon stands at roughly four to five feet tall at the shoulder and their bodies are low slung, much like that of a large feline. They possess wickedly sharp beaks and claws, which can easily rend flesh, making them creatures that are not to be trifled with. In general, they are considered to be the most dominant creatures inhabiting A’veron and sit near the top of the food chain. They are noted for both their prowess in air and on land – they can be found stalking prey in the tall grasses of the Great Plains just as often as they soar high in the skies and hunt from above. They also have what is called a crepuscular activity pattern, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk, though many gryphons will remain active all through out the day and rest during the hottest hours.
The Tiwahe of the Great Plains are well known as one of the largest and oldest clans. Stories of their triumphs are often sung by many of the more intelligent creatures of the land, though they do not currently have contact with any other clans or creatures that could rival their own level of sentience. When the clan was young, it was warlike and fought, beak and claw, for the lands they now dominate. Few could stand against them and even fewer exist who could have rivaled them in their heyday. Now they wander the plains, often following prey, and consist of both males and females. They turn to the western mountains typically when rearing chicks and it is considered to be the clan proper, but it isn’t uncommon for those who are not burdened by family to spread far and wide. They tend to build nests out of sticks, feathers, fur, grasses, and any other soft objects they may come upon the cliff sides and natural caves of the mountains. Those who are away from the mountains will seek shelter among the brush of the plains. Some may scrape together makeshift nests and some do not, it all varies depending on the individual’s preference. Very few, if any, dare to enter the forest to the east. It isn’t uncommon for gryphons to rest in the shades of the trees on the vast forest’s fringes, but those foolish enough to enter very rarely return. It is said that beasts that can devour a gryphon reside in the heart of the forest. Safety in numbers is something the elders stress and each gryphon takes to heart. On their own, they are strong, but as a clan, they are undefeatable. This being said, leaving the clan is considered unfathomable and while it is not a spoken law that a gryphon cannot leave, the vast majority would never even consider it. The ultimate punishment for a crime is not death, but to be exiled and no longer considered a member of the family.
Generally, the clan is extremely tight knit and work together. Every member of the clan is expected to be productive and to be seen as unproductive or lazy is typically a disgrace. Able-bodied adults are expected to take on a profession within the clan and fledglings are expected to participate as much as they can in day to day clan life – be it learning about the profession they plan to join as adults or up keeping dens and meeting places. Elders and those who are unable to hunt or fight typically help care for and teach the young.
One Ela, or leader leads the clan. Given the clan is matriarchal, the leader is always female and the current presiding gryphon is the young Osprey’ela, who was daughter of the last Ela. Her right paw, the Commander, is a powerful male by the name of Haydée. Beneath them are the overseers, the gryphons who generally “keep the peace.”
In the spring, the gryphons usually hold a celebration and those who are able-bodied, young and old migrate towards the large lake at the northern fringes of the Tiwahe territory. Here, young gryphons court each other with displays of strength and the flashing of feathers. Young possible couples will dance high in the sky, above the water, while those too young for such flights of fancy play in the lake’s shallows. The gryphons as a whole do tend to have an affinity for water and will not shy away from cavorting in the shallows, but few swim well enough to go deeper than their shoulders. Another festival, the Istalo or “The Hunt” is held on the longest day of the A’veron year and often lasts for a week or two. The hunters of the clan gather food and there is much feasting, dancing, and singing as the gryphons celebrate both the Sun Mother and the Sky Mother.
Tasks
Hunters – Hunters are generally the bread and butter of the clan. All gryphons are expected to hunt, though Hunters are expected to bring food back to the clan proper for mothers, chicks, and those unable to hunt for themselves. They help to feed the clan and though they are also expected to keep watch over the territory for danger, hunting is their prime concern.
Gatherers - Given gryphons are completely carnivorous in diet, most tend to choose the task of hunter over gatherer, but gatherers are important in their own right. While some might gather pleasant smelling plants to decorate nests with, the real task of a gatherer is to find plants and herbs for the healers and shaman. They might find other bits and bobbles along the way, but their primary goal is to work closely with those who tend the health of the clan.
Scouts – Scouts usually work in pairs and are the most agile of the clan. They are responsible for watching and marking the clan’s borders. At the first sign of danger, they are to report to the nearest overseer. If the threat warrants it, the scout will be sent on to report to the Commander, while the overseer assesses the situation. Borders are marked via scraping trees and rocks or rubbing their cheeks against said spots.
Crafters – Gryphons paws do allow for some manipulation of materials. Those who are particularly dexterous find themselves recruited into the task of crafting. They make items ranging from decorative trinkets to more useful pouches. They are typically limited to materials found on the plains – hides, bones, rocks, and wood gathered from the more forested areas.
Painters – Painters make paints out of materials found throughout A'veron and are often enlisted to dye the fur and feathers of the clan members. Those who are most skilled are highly prized and often enlisted to mark the ranks of the higher ups.
Healers - Healers are highly valued in the clan, especially those who have studied under a shaman. They tend to wounds both physical and mental, helping to keep the clan fit and strong. They are usually assigned territories, to make sure that those gryphons who like to roam are never too terribly far from help.
Minders – Minders, well, mind. They act as nannies to young gryphons and often help rear the kittens of parents who are busy working to support the clan. They also foster the youngsters who either have been abandoned to their care or who were orphaned.
Storytellers – Those who are storytellers are actually a great many things. First and foremost, they are the teachers of the clan and are highly revered. They sing stories of old and pass on tales of caution and valor. They keep the clan’s history and pass it on to the future generations. They tend to also act as minders, but are far more specialized. Any gryphon that wishes to pass on clan lore or tend to the youngsters of the clan can fill this role, but the elderly and those who are unable to hunt generally dominate it.
Restricted - The following tasks are obtained through roleplay or events.
Ela – The leader of the clan and always a female, as females are the lifegivers and considered to be made in the Sky Mother’s own image. A leader needs to care for every member of the clan as though they were her own offspring and while she leads the clan, her word is not completely absolute. She is expected to listen to the wants of her people and governs with her Commander and the Overseers. Though the Ela is typically the daughter of the previous Ela, it isn’t unusual for the position to be passed on to another female who shows greater ability. The current Ela wears a hooked talisman carved of bone.
Commander – Considered to be second in command to the Ela, the Commander will head the clan in the Ela’s absence and is her shadow. The Commander can be male or female, though males are often preferred and tend to focus on more aggressive, warlike aspects of the clan. The Commander's rank is shown with paints - the colour is always blue and it generally covers the forehead.
Overseers – Overseers report to both the Ela and Commander and act much like the police of the clan. They keep the peace, settle disputes, and generally help to protect the clan members as a whole. They drive away intruders, which are not welcome. The overseers guard the few that are allowed in tirelessly and are often the first responders to dangerous situations. Overseers are often paw-picked by both Ela and Commander after showing skills in their given profession. Most tend to come from the Hunters and Scouts, but young ones who show skill and even those in non-combative tasks might be recruited. Each overseer's shoulder is marked with paints that resemble three scratches.
Speakers – Speakers are gryphons that meet with the leaders of the clan. They are generally called upon when there is a dispute that must be settled or when a gryphon stands trial for a crime committed. They are usually highly looked on and are expected to have the clan’s best interest at heart.
Shaman – Shaman are few and far between. They are considered to be blessed by the Sun and Sky, gifted with talents that an ordinary gryphon would not posses. Some say they can see the future; others have a way with herbs and the ability to mend wounds. They often have a familiar through which they share sight and because of this usually favor birds. Shaman are valued in the clan for their skills and while some gryphons might be wary of them, many leaders tend to look to them for advice. They are usually considered to be head of the healers and are the ones who help higher ranking healers in their studies. Shaman, while not always marked, usually have two lines painted under each eye to signify rank.
Diet
Gryphons are purely carnivorous, and prefer to hunt large game, though they will take small prey as well as fish.

Gods, Goddesses, And View Of Death:
Before the first gryphons, before the first tree, before the first rock and blade of grass, there was nothing but vast expanses of water as far as the eye could see. Sun Mother and Moon Father ruled here and were happy. Sister and Brother spent their days among the stars, discussing what would become of A'veron and what they would create. Moon Father dreamed of a beautiful night, one where the denizens of A'veron would bask in his pale glow, while Sun Mother wished for bright, warm days. Neither could come to an agreement, but they still loved each other - as bickering siblings tend to do.
This went on for ages, neither side giving an inch to the other. One day, Sun Mother decided enough was enough. From her feathers, she crafted Sky Mother and told her of her wishes. Her daughter loved her very much, but she loved her uncle as well. She made the skies and the clouds, on which she rested, but did not lift a paw to help either. Eventually, Sun Mother and Moon Father began to argue and their booming voices could be heard echoing across the vast waters. They gave chase - each furious with the other, but love forever kept them from catching one another.
In their absence, Sky Mother carved A'veron, herself. Sun Mother's warmth provided life and A'veron flourished under her rays, while A'veron rested and restored strength under Moon Father's pale glow.
The above is the story that most of the Gryphons of A'veron believe to be the Creation Story of their world, and as such, most will worship these Gods and Godesses, though dependant on the clan, in varying ways. As has been mentioned in other posts, the Gryphons of the Tiwahe celebrate their Deities in two rather specific festivals; the Woith'ekichla (Love Dance) in the spring, when new life-bonds are made between young Gryphons, and in the autumn, the Istalo (The Great Hunt), where the Gryphons' finest hunters showcase what the Sky Mother provides them in a great festival of feasting and celebration. Gryphons tend to pay the most homage to Sky Mother for creating them, but they also worship the Sun, for it is her warmth that allows life to flourish on A'veron. They also pay homage to the Moon, though not quite to as great of an extent. Quite frankly, all life is sacred, be it from insect to the great trees to the east.
It is tradition to pray over the animals that are killed during the hunt, to give thanks to the goddesses and thanks to the creature that will proved their clan with sustenance. The prayer varies from gryphon to gryphon and is considered to be a personal saying, however, the basis for this prayer generally follows the following protocol:
"Philan'yayapi, ((animal killed)), Sel niciwanagi kapaka."
Literally translated, this means "We thank you, ((animal killed)). May your soul pass on." It is also tradition to prey for those who are lost or who are killed during battles or disputes, regardless of which clan they hail from. The basic prayer for a comrade killed in battle is as follows:
"Philan'yayapi, ((name of comrade, or Slolnesyi)). Sel niciwanagi kapaka Mahpiya'ina'el."
Literally translated, this means "We thank you, ((name of comrade, or Unknown for an enemy or found deceased)). May your soul pass on to the Sky Mother."
Gryphons are not a race that usually fears death. That's not to say they are without the instinct to stay alive, far from it, but when a gryphon dies, the clan and said gryphon's bloodkin celebrate his or her life. There is usually much singing and dancing to honour his or her memory and well wishing him or her on to the next life.
Due to the three Deities that granted them their life, Gryphons of A'veron believe they are gifted three tries at making the most of their time on A'veron, and are reincarnated in a new form after death three times; the first life is provided by their Sky Mother, the second by the Moon Father, and the last, the one that will ultimately burn their souls up and exhaust their reincarnation abilities is given by the Sun Mother, to whom they ultimately return to to continue to fuel Her fires, and thus continue to feed the world upon which they lived with life-giving warmth. Of course, they have no idea which life they are on and tend to live it as though it is their last, devoting themselves to their clan and to the Gods in equal measure. Occasionally, Gryphons will see glimpses of past lives in their dreams, and those with a strong connection to these previous lives will generally be Shamans, who are able to use their lessons from previous lives in this one.
Shamans And Their Gifts:
Shamans are an unusual creature in terms of A'veron Gryphon society. Somewhat removed from general society, they are teachers and healers with gifts beyond what others can do. Shamans are generally always seen to have a chosen familiar, and through time spent with this creature, and due to unusual gifts given to them by the Gods, Shamans are able to pass their sight into that of their familiar, which is why they generally chose far ranging animals, like hawks, song-birds, wolves and hares. Some do not chose long ranging familiars, and instead plug for an animal that will aid them in their chores and in their tasks, so a familiar like a badger or otter, rat or lizard.
Shamans, like other Gryphons, do not have the skill to converse with other animals, but there seems to be a deeper connection between Shamans and their chosen familiars then other Gryphons that manage to attract a familiar. Though unable to converse as Gryphons do amongst themselves, Shamans can direct and give tasks to their familiars, whom seem to understand what it is that the Shaman requires of them. It has also been noted that, for some unknown reason, familiars of Shamans are able to live longer then other Gryphon familiars; this could be due to some of the magical properties seen in the connection between Shaman and familiar.
Shamans, like their Clan-kin, will have tasks that they excel at over other tasks; some may be expert healers, others may have excellent foresight that they can use to help predict migratory paths of their prey, and help the Clan know what is to come from potential Clan-threats. Whatever task they excel in, Shamans are rare, and generally viewed as a direct connection to the Gods, as they have been blessed by them.
A Nomadic Lifestyle:
The Tiwahe Clan of Gryphons, like most Gryphon tribes in this world, are a nomadic people, and live off what the land provides, rather then trying to cultivate it to work for them. They are hunter-gatherer people, and are in tune to the seasons, and the cycles of their prey. They have a number of nest sites which, depending on the time of year, they move between to be most able to provide for their vast numbers. They will barter with items found, and with resources one Gryphon may have coveted that another wants. Painters and Crafters are likely to be paid in food and materials for their wares or services by those deemed as lower in the social chain, whereas they are likely to craft and paint for bragging rights when it comes to those above them.
The hierarchy of the Nomadic Clans are generally matriarchal, but sometimes, if a matriarch has not birthed a single daughter, she may pass her crown on to one of her sons, until he is able to pass it on to his oldest, or most suitable, daughter, or to his mate, if she is deemed worthy by the rest of the Clan. Generally, the crown of matriarch, and occasionally patriarch, of the Clan runs in a family line. However, rarely, a competitor who is unrelated may step forward an a Leader Battle occur. This will involve the current Ela (Ila if it is a son taking on the role for a short time) take on the Competitor (Toka). Should the Ela/Ila triumph, the Toka, if they were a member of the Clan, may be exiled, but that will depend on the way in which the challenge was issued. If the Toka wins, then it is usually due to them killing the Ela/Ila, and the family of the previous leader may be exiled, if the triumphant Toka believes them to be a threat to their reign. Most of the time, however, the Gryphons will accept the change in leadership without exile being a result, and if the Toka was a previously uninitiated member of the Clan, may be entered into the fold, but may also move on without becoming a member of the Clan.

The Story Of The Old Tongue:
In the beginning, the Gryphons of A'veron spoke the language of their Deities, known now only as 'The Old Tongue'. What they speak now is considered to be 'The Common Tongue', and is a simplified version of what they once spoke, kind of like how archaic English become what we know and speak today; certain words fell out of use, others were shortened, and slang words became common use.
However, in certain turns of phrase, such as the prayers said over the dead, or at the end of a successful hunt, the Old Tongue is still used, and there are certain words that may still be used as an alternative, or more respectful term, for other moments of their life, such as when addressing the Deities, or even in endearments.

This here is the current Owner's List for this new version of Plains Of A'veron. If you were in a previous incarnation of this shop and want to be transferred to the new one, with an updated cert, simply make a post in the thread, and take yourself to the guild to get a new cert.
If you do not have your uncert, and we cannot find it, we may need to take one of two actions: either pull it off the old cert, but you must be aware that this small version is all you will have for the future, or, alternatively, you can get your Gryphon recoloured, either onto the same lines, or onto any of our new alternative ones.
If you are simply missing from this list, or one of your Gryphons is, simply make a post in the thread, quoting Sky Mother, and one of the staff will make sure you get added!

WHO'S UP FOR A RAFFLE OR THREE?
Ooooh, something fun is a'foot, and with the UK having just celebrated Gay Pride over a number of different cities, plus all the political debates surrounding the subject of gay marriage, here at Plains of A'veron, we decided to do our bit and show some support!
In this little mini, pre-grand re-opening event, there will be three raffles, with the possibility of having extra prizes added depending on how many tickets are bought!! There are a few rules to follow, but otherwise, take a look, and help us show solidarity for the LGBT community!
Those eagle eyed amongst you may also note that this is the first event which shows one of the new default genetic traits these gryphons can show; all have ear tufts!!

> All tickets, for each event, are 50g each.
> Ensure you post the correct price of tickets being bought with the correct code for the couple you are trying for.
> This is a JOINT event; all participants must fill one of these criteria:
xxxxxxxx~ Be a shop regular with 5 or more gryphons owned, with a partner with currently NO gryphons.
xxxxxxxx~ Be a shop regular with 4 or less gryphons owned, with a partner with fewer then 2 gryphons.
xxxxxxxx~ Be a shop regular, or new to the shop, with no gryphons, and then the world is your oyster, and anyone can be your partner.
> Send trades to the MULE, Sky Mother, within 24hrs of posting your desire to buy tickets.
> Both partners can buy tickets independently, but you can only win from ONE event.
xxxxxxxx~ So, you can try with suchandsuch for the FxF couple, and with soandso for MxF, but you will only be allowed to win ONCE.
> Once purchased, without extensive RP to show otherwise, these couples will stay together as life partners, so make sure you continue to RP them as such, unless you want to go through the RP to show them falling apart. However, these gryphons tend to mate for life, and this also applies to any same sex couples the world may have!
Ah yes, I mentioned incentives in the raffle ladders did I not? Well, each raffle will follow the same ladder that I am showing below, so if you want the incentives, get your friends involved and post up those tickets! It will be well worth it!!
Tickets Bought ~~~~~ Incentive
100 ~~~~~ Paired items on the couple
250 ~~~~~ 1 free kitten from first breeding of couple
500 ~~~~~ Free breeding for first breeding of couple
1000 ~~~~~ For same-sex couples; free semi-custom of devoted surrogate (pose ~ colour theme)!
1000 ~~~~~ For MxF couple; 1 free custom offspring from first breeding!
So without further ado, the raffles are such:
STARTS : NOW
ENDS : 10 JUNE

Breeding:
"You see, when a male and female love each other very, very much, they get the urge to make a big pile of sticks and lay eggs in it..."
Gryphons tend to form bonds that last a lifetime. It is unusual for a gryphon to take on more than one partner, unless his or her partner has died. Of course, flings do happen from time to time, but most would avoid such a situation for fear of gossip and being frowned upon by their clanmates. Generally, it is preferred to find a life partner and to rear many, healthy offspring. Females usually lay eggs in the spring and will not breed again until their current litter reaches adulthood. The entire clan typically rears young gryphons, as it functions as a large family, but the parents are expected to care for and bring up strong, productive members.
Mates tend to woo each other through feats of strength and with sky dancing - some prefer elaborate arial displays, while other are particularly fond of bright plumage. Males generally tussle amongst each other to prove their worth to females and much courting amongst the youngsters take place in early spring, just as the snows begin to thaw.
Same-sex pairings do happen and it is not all that uncommon, though they are also expected to take only one mate. Unfortunately, it is biologically impossible for a same-sex pairing to procreate, but they are encouraged to adopt kittens or eggs that do not have parents. It is very rare for same-sex couples to find surrogates, if only because most gryphons would want to put their time and energy in bringing their own offspring into the world – not someone else’s. It is not entirely unheard of, though.
Breeding Cost: 10k
[-] Both parents must be adults to breed.
[-] Male x female only. Surrogates are allowed, so long as roleplay exists to back it up.
[-] You must wait 2 weeks from when your pet hits adulthood to be eligible.
[-] Breedings will produce 2-4 kittens.
[-] A pair must wait for their offspring to grow to adulthood to breed again.
