- Pompeii was a Roman city near modern Naples. in the year
AD79, Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried the entire town.
Although there were signs of the impending doom that would
fall upon Pompeii, the citizens were caught by surprise. Mount
Vesuvius remains active to this day, and is the only active
volcano in mainland Europe.
