Story
After decades of experimentation with artificially intelligent technology, the Freelancer Project constructed the most advanced “smart AI” in existence, having functions most humans couldn’t even imagine. After perfecting this AI, the Director of the Freelancer Project wanted to implement its technology into the armor of the people who were meant to help test the AI, the Freelancers, who were each codenamed with one of the 50 US states. However, when attempts were made to duplicate the original AI, known as the Alpha, it grew apparent that such a feat would be next to impossible. With the most innovative technology in decades on his hands and no way to use it effectively, the Director wasn’t about to let it all go to waste, so he came up with a desperate plan: fragmentation.

Since there was no way to make copies of the Alpha AI, the Director administered the plan to fragment it and use separate pieces in the project rather than the full AI. Unfortunately, there was only one way to do this, and that was to torture the AI by presenting it with scenario after scenario of stress and danger, and compartmentalize the data that splintered off of the original. This proved to work at first, and the twenty-eight resulting “dumb AI”, including the Alpha, were integrated into the armor of the Freelancers.

For some Freelancers, the AI were able to regulate and operate their armor enhancements, which were previously very difficult to use correctly and easily malfunctioned. The installation of the AI thus greatly improved the efficiency of the Freelancers on their missions, but there was a catch.

It was only a short time before the effects of torturing the Alpha AI were recognized. When the Director had the Alpha tortured, things began to happen to it that would usually only happen in a normal human brain, and the Alpha’s mind began to separate its personality to cope with its torture; each fragmented AI was its own raw personality trait. When this was realized, the implanting processes were terminated and the Freelancers that were given AI were closely monitored.

When one of them did begin to show signs of acting up, the Director ordered the Agent’s AI to be removed immediately, but it wasn’t so easy. The AI that were to be removed fought back at the removal process, and used the Freelancers they were installed into to escape their fate.
This happened first to Agent Maine, after which he abandoned the agency to become independent. His AI, Sigma, came up with the idea of gathering up the AI units in order to recreate the Alpha. Following this idea, Maine made it his mission to systematically hunt down the other Freelancers to steal their AI.

After this occurrence, more Freelancers left the program to become independent, though not all of them did so for the same reason as Agent Maine. Finally, the director took action against the insurrection, and ordered the remaining Freelancers to hunt down the ones who left and return their AI to the Freelancer Headquarters. This struck fear into many of the remaining units who had planned to leave, and may as well have sparked war between the remaining Freelancers and the ones who left.

    Roleplay Rules
  1. Follow Gaia’s Terms of Service.
  2. No godmoding or any related forms of overpowering your character.
  3. You must have a literacy level of at least 5 (See A Guide To Literacy for details).
  4. Please do not use OCC in the RP thread. There is a separate thread for that here.
  5. Do not quote other posts. It looks icky and makes the page longer than it needs to be.
  6. Post often. If you are gone for a long time without prior notification, I will have a PM sent to you. If you still do not post, you will be removed from the RP and possibly blacklisted. If you are interacting with a character and will be gone for whatever reason, you can ask another roleplayer to assume control of your character while you are gone. Furthermore, do not join the roleplay only to leave forever. Not only is a waste of time, but it is rude and annoying and can result in a blacklisting.
  7. Romance is okay, but keep it PG-16; nobody’s clothes will be removed for any reason whatsoever.
  8. If you use a color that is difficult to see, you will be asked to change it.
  9. Avoid doing anything defined in the Munch List.
  10. If you have multiple characters, please do not post all of their actions in the same post. Use a different post for each character. AI do not count as separate characters.
  11. You might have noticed that this storyline is basically a slight variation Freelancer Project from Red vs. Blue, but this is an alternate version of the project, so the characters do not necessarily have to be the same.
  12. Please pay attention to others’ posts. It doesn’t look good if someone says one thing and you misinterpret or even make up that they said something totally different.
  13. I reserve the right to edit, add, or remove any rules as I see fit without notifying anybody. Please check the rules periodically to make sure you don’t miss any updates.

    Profile Rules
  14. Send your profile to dehydromon via private message. Do not post it as this will result in deletion of your character profile. Your profile will be added depending on whether or not your profile is accepted.
  15. Unless you have been given special permission, or one of your characters has been killed off in the roleplay, do not submit more than two character profiles. The worst case scenarios is that it could kill the roleplay if you have seventeen characters and end up having to disappear for six months. Plus, I like to give everyone a chance to be one of the special characters.

Personality: Agent West is a somewhat self-serving, battle-hardened soul who will often take advantage of other people and use them to his advantage. If he is angered, even to the slightest extent, he will begin to grow violent. To him, most other people are ultimately just tools to use for his own gain. For that reason, when he’s not convincing people to do his dirty work, he is usually seen alone. On many occasions, West has exhibited highly insubordinate behavior, and would often make room in every mission to put his sniper rifle to good use. Since his abandonment from the Freelancer Agency, however, he began to wonder who he really was. His weakness? He dare not speak it aloud, but he became deaf in his left ear sometime during his childhood, and thus isn't quite the best at determining the direction of a sound.

Biography: Call life tough and then try to compare it with Matt. His real parents abandoned him at an orphanage days after he was born. If that wasn’t bad enough, he was adopted into new families on three different occasions, each one much worse than the last. Why three? Because every one he was introduced into ended up getting turned in for child abuse. His third family was more of just a mother who couldn't handle the pain of losing her first child. Every month, she had a new boyfriend, and she certainly had a knack for picking the ones that liked beat children for no good reason. In order to survive, Matt ran away. He had a hard time remembering much of his life over the next few years.

Eventually, he stumbled upon the Freelancer Agency. There, his memory was wiped and he was trained to be a soldier. His codename, which became the only name he ever went by, was Agent West Virginia. That was where the sniper rifle became his designated weapon, but he never got used to using it to work with other people. He still didn’t remember his past, but he knew something had happened to him a long time ago that made teamwork difficult for him. After several missions that were either a struggle or a failure because of his lack of teamwork, his profile was recategorized into the Rogue Branch of the agency, which allowed him to work alone. It was at this time that information was leaked that the Director had for some time been putting inside agents to work constructing the most advanced AI in the world.

In the Rogue Branch of the Freelancer Agency, West began to show further signs of insubordination, and started to not only eliminate people that weren’t supposed to be part of the mission, but also to start going on missions of his own. Ordinarily, this would result in severe punishment, but with more and more of the agency being focused on the construction of the Alpha AI, he never really got the penalty he expected.

Once the Alpha AI was finished, the Director ordered it to be tested first on the members of the Rogue Branch, since it was where most of the other Agents under the US state naming scheme had also been transferred to. Under the Freelancer Project, as it was later named, he was given a new set of armor that was able to house both his Weight Adjustment armor enhancement and the Kappa AI. Missions after the installation of his AI became much more interesting and a lot tougher, but it wasn’t long before unforeseen complications began to arise in West’s later missions.

Before long, Agent West learned that the AI in one of the Freelancer Agents had gone rampant and that all the Freelancers were to be monitored closely thereafter. This displeased Agent West, but it wasn’t until there were rumors of terminating the Freelancer Project altogether that he decided to leave. Even though he later learned that the rumors were lies, he chose to stay on the path of an independent Freelancer. He also learned that there were several other Freelancers that chose the same path, but he never made an effort to work with them. He liked the freedom of working totally alone.

Theme Song: Scars Remain - Disciple
Other Info: Matthew Larson stands 6’ 2” tall and weighs 188 pounds. He has a tattoo of the number 21 on the back of his neck.

User Imagegent.West Virginia stood on the edge of a cliff that overlooked the canyon in which the Freelancer Headquarters was located. Today marked the twenty-first day since the first Freelancer insurrected from the agency, and now it was his time to leave behind what he once called home. He wasn’t sure where he would go once he left the area, but he did know he was going to a place that was as far away from Headquarters as possible.

There was a lot he would be happy to get away from, most notably the agents he had to work with. Living in the compound was more of a pain than anything else he could imagine, and he wasn’t too fond of the missions Command kept giving him. It got the point where he considered them an insult to his full potential. From now on, he would take orders from no one, and he wouldn’t be punished for removing anyone who tried to give him orders. His mission from now on would be to avoid being captured by the Freelancers he reckoned would be after his AI, Kappa. If he did cross paths with someone who wished to take him back, he would not hesitate to kill them.

Of all the items he possessed while he remained part of the project, all that still carried value to him was all he carried with him: his armor, his weapons, and his AI. He cared less what would happen to everything he left behind. Even the people he left behind were no longer a matter to him unless they decided to follow him.

His SRS 99 Anti-Matériel Sniper Rifle was firmly attached to the back of his armor. It was his most valuable asset in the case of a deadly encounter, though he likely would be in the best shape after a firefight if Project Freelancer had been given the healing unit for his armor rather than the weight adjustment unit, which he decided he would probably not use as often as the Director would have hoped, or even expected.

After a painfully nostalgic moment, West turned away from all the memories he had ever known and left them all behind, only looking forward to what awaited him in the future. If it wasn’t any better than what he had just left, then surely there was no way it could be any worse. Or so he had hoped. Having his memory erased as he joined the Freelancer Program, he remembered nothing of the world he once lived in. All he knew was that it, too, seemed similarly dismal and depressing at the time. If that intuition of the past was true, he was now on the gamble that it would be better now than it was. But given what he was leaving behind, he wasn’t sure it even mattered anymore.
