Hark! Not another beta thread?
Well, kind of. But this one comes with a twist and hopefully won't die a brisk death.

This thread was originally created on January 3rd, 2007 by Dev Kimiko. I do not claim ownership of the idea, but I do assume responsibility, and am, therefore, graciously accepting such from Dev Kimiko due to her not being on GAIA as often as she used to be.

Tired of useless feedback and never getting your writing read? Willing to give feedback to get it? Hopefully you've come to the right place. WRITER SWAP is a beta reader thread for writers which works on the principle of mutual feedback. You must give to receive. It is hoped that this thread will allow people to help themselves and help others with their writing 3nodding

RULES OF THE THREAD

  • If you are interested in having your work read, and are willing to read someone else's in return, please post in this thread with the following info (Full form can be found in the post below);
    - The title and genre of your work. Prose, poetry, fanfiction and essays all welcome.
    - A short description and approximate word length
    - The current status of your work (Finished, unfinished, rough draft, revising, etc...). You may also specify areas you are looking for particular feedback on.
    - Any additional notes (EG; Do you have a thread for your work, or do you want your feedback over PM's?)

  • Do not post your actual story in this thread. You will not get feedback on it.

  • There is no minimum or maximum word limit for submissions. There is a cap of 4 submissions per person, so try to pick the ones you're most looking for feedback on.

  • If you are interested in beta swapping with someone, please PM them and include
    - The name of the piece you want to read,
    - The information on the work you would like them to read in return.
    All swappers have the right to refuse expressions of interest. Please do not take this too personally. Beta-ing has a tendency to fall apart when forced, so it's better if both parties are interested.


RULES OF THE SWAP

  • Once you have acquired a fellow swapper, you will have 15 days in which to read and respond to their work. For particularly long works, please negotiate with your swapper as to how much you can, or are willing to, read.

  • If for any reason you foresee not being able to respond in that time, please give your swapper prior notice or politely request an extension. Swappers: if you receive no response within 15 days, please PM me. Swappers who refuse to comply with the rules and give no reason as to why will be put on a greylist. Repeat offenders will be blacklisted.

  • For every 200 words of story you read, you should write 10 words in response. That is to say, if you read 20,000 words of story, you should write at least 1000 words of feedback (Not 'OMG, I need to write a ten word comment every paragraph!?'). Of course, feel free to write more 3nodding . Feedback does not just have to be critique; it can also be your personal response to characters and plot, or questions on the future direction of the work.

  • The above is the standard minimum requirement, but the expected level of feedback may vary (see any story-specific additional notes)

  • Similarly, swappers who fail to give enough feedback can be greylisted. Repeat offenders will be blacklisted. This should not be a one-sided swap where you freeload off someone and give very little feedback yourself. If you truly have nothing much to say, at least explain why. Swappers may report you if you meet both of the following:
    - You have gone under the minimum feedback requirement
    - They are personally dissatisfied with the level of that feedback

  • [OPTIONAL] In addition to giving feedback on their work, I would also like you to recommend something inspiring or creative to your swapper. This could be an author or book you personally enjoy, a song or band, a movie, an artwork or artist, a writing exercise, and soforth. Swappers do not have to act on these suggestions. They are more there as food for thought and creativity 3nodding


A FEW NOTES ABOUT THE THREAD

  • I sometimes see people get intimidated by some of the more experienced WF crew, or even because they're new or they've never posted their work up before, or any number of reasons. There should be no need for this, the Writers Swap! was made for everyone, whether you've been writing a few months, or a few decades! Everyone should feel at home here.

  • A lot of the WF are really great people, or at least decent, and most of them don't bite. Swapping story reviews, especially through the thread I've taken responsibility for, you shouldn't have to worry about someone freaking out on you for a review you've given - especially a polite, honest one. Anyone who did would be blacklisted for inappropriate behavior towards another member of the thread, and not allowed to participate anymore - trolls/flamers will be made an example to others. I can't tell you how much it bugs me when I see people who are genuinely trying to give a person some help with their writing, and the other party acts like an a-hole... stressed

  • Basically, I want this thread to be a relaxed environment where people can feel at ease, and not have to worry about getting some a-hole who just wants an excuse to troll/flame, even if its a lame one. I won't tolerate rule breakers or rude/cruel people, and I hope that people can understand that and feel comfortable using the Writers Swap! Please, as long as everyone follows the thread rules, and GAIA's ToS, everyone should have a great time here!

  • Remember, as long as you've given a well-thought review, with opinions and ideas, you should get a pleasant response to it, every time.

Genre: Speculative Fiction, Thriller
Approximate submitted length: 120,000 words. About 400 pages when I put into book-size.
Brief description:The Allies were forced out of Europe, regressing step by step until Germany reigned superior over all. Forced into surrender, Nazi Germany either annexed all enemy territories or forced them into a begrudging alliance. Many nations fell into a state of anarchy aer their ocial surrenders, but one fact is certain: not a corner of the globe hasn't been touched by e ird Reich. And yet, a glimmer of hope may yet remain. Resistances—Widerstände, as they are called in the Desirable Tongue—have gone in and out of existence for decades now. But only one has persevered to the present day: Die Weiße Rose—the White Rose. Flash forward to 1989, and e White Rose has begun their most ambitious mission yet: Operation Sleeping Wolf, where they plan to take down e ird Reich once and for all.

Led by one Moses Kaplan, they have split the revolution into three cadres: one in Berlin, Sicily, and Virginia. But these revolutionaries are far more than meets the eye. Each has their own story to tell, each has their own reasons for joining the fight. But these reasons all clash with every passing murder. With the future of the Resistance on the line, it boils down to one question: Who is willing to risk what to end tyranny?


That was from the back of my book cover. Basically, Germany wins WWII, and we follow a massive resistance forty-odd years later.

Brief description: Vognas is a small, arrogant, flying monster who lives in a cupboard and happens to be more miserable with his life than he'll let himself admit. However, it'll soon change as he just got the most important job in the whole Outer Land: a guide to God, a girl with just her uncle and brother. Still, he might lose his job when his past is called into question...
Current status of work: In Progress. Writing the fourth chapter.
Please pick apart my...: Everything and anything. Characters are the focus of the story, so any problems with them I'd love to hear. Descriptions and settings are things I struggle with nonstop, so any help there would be loved.
Additional notes: It's written in third person, present tense. Also, the third chapter has some suggestive themes, but nothing I would hide from a thirteen year old. There is little to no magic in this world, there are no elves, etc... it's mainly Alice in Wonderland that makes slightly more sense and if the main character was instead the White Rabbit or the Caterpillar.

Brief description: Long ago the Proak used their magic to solve a catastrophe. The magic required more sacrifice then they could give and a gateway was opened, unleashing the demon they gained their magic from. The demons were sealed away, and the story has past into myth.

Now a miner has uncovered a strange symbol, the seal of the king who first trapped the demons, and unwittingly destroys the seal setting them free. Odd thing is, it appears that it wasn't an accident that the seal was destroyed. (If you would like a full plot overview, spoilers and all, just let me know.)
Current status of work:Chapter four finished and editted.

Upon finally meeting the queen, they are tricked into a trap and sent to a new world.

Prefered Genre: Pretty much anything prose, although I'm more interested in Low Fantasy as opposed to High Fantasy, and I haven't read much in the way of Suspense/Thriller novels for quite some time.
My perspective is usually...: I don't prefer one perspective over another in terms of editing/critiqueing, I've been leaning more and more toward first person in my own writings, if that helps.
How much you can handle: I can handle any size submission, provided I'm given enough time to get through it all. I'm a college student, so I have homework and club commitments in addition to what I do here on Gaia, so it might take me a while to get to and through submissions, but if you have patience, I'm confident my critique will satisfy. wink
