Who:
You and me. I am the only judge for this contest, and there are no restrictions on who can enter.

What:
A quick scroll down will reveal no references. These are characters that I have no art for yet, and specifically the open-ended ones with very basic bios. How you draw them is completely up to you, as long as the basic idea is your inspiration for the picture. If it doesn't come out exactly the way you wanted or think that I'm looking for, submit it anyway. These are all flexible characters with nothing written about them yet, so I may like your idea better than my own and alter the character to fit.

When:
This contest will end on May 18th, 2009, provided that a minimum of 25 eligible entries are received. If there are not 25 entries by the end date, I will consider whether to extend the contest until the 25th entry or whether to lower the prize. Please submit your entries early and encourage your friends to enter.
By popular request, this contest will now end one week after the 25th person enters. Recruit your friends!
The contest requirements have been fulfilled, and all of this will end 10 November. To give everyone a day to catch on and for my own convenience, all entries must be received by 11pm PST on 10 November 2009. Unless I'm having a really, truly horrible evening, I'll be going through the entries that same night and will have the entries narrowed down by morning, if not the winner him/herself determined

Where:
HERE! All entries and questions must be posted in this thread. My PM inbox is usually close to full, and there's no chance I'm accidentally delete it if you post it here.

Why:
I enjoy commissioning professional and semi-professional artists for my characters, but there are two main problems I run into: 1) I'm not a wealthy woman, 2) most of them appreciate picture references more than written descriptions. I'm flat broke at the moment, so it seems like a good time to get basic refs for a ton of characters that otherwise have zilch.

How:
I have zero preference for medium OR style, this one time. So whether you use traditional or computer, chibi or realism or anime or a unique comic style, photo manip or sketch or pixel doll, you are welcome to enter. I really do mean ANYTHING is a welcome entry. ^^

Who owns the art:
~I have the right to use all entries as character references, even if the entry did not win a prize.
~The artist always has the right to display their work, as long as it is not submitted for another contest or used for someone else's character(s).

Do's:
any medium
any style
head/bust/halfbody/34 body/fullbody/multiple characters
background, single color background, or no background
any number of characters (one person=one entry, but many sketches of different characters can be better than one good CG)
any personality you think fits
any setting
any pose you think fits
bumping
chatting

Don't's:
watermark
Non-PG-13 material (please ask if you don't know--suggestive and/or blood is fine, but excessive is against Gaia Terms of Service)
stealing artwork
spam
flaming
trolling
stalking
PMing me unless you have a valid reason (such as Gaia errors not letting you post) or need to speak to me privately
whining
complaining about the rules or any unfairness you see in this contest (if you see a problem, please be polite sad )
critiquing or criticizing any of the entries, or comparing one to another (unless the artist asks YOU PERSONALLY or the thread as a whole)
criticizing how I judge and why
other obvious things like this...

"How I judge entries" stuff:
~Entries with poor anatomy and/or look like scribbles will not be accepted. I know the difference between poor art and an interesting style, so don't worry if you're doing chibis, pixel dolls, a unique style, etc... But I care a lot more about anatomy than pretty colors, so keep that in mind if you're split on which to emphasize. Lineart with good anatomy (within whatever style) will be accepted. Picasso will not.
~Quantity is better than quality. Once you meet the basic requirement (stated above), I would much rather see 10 single-color sketches than one Unibasu-quality CG headshot. Do what you can pull off, so skip feet and hands if you know you're terrible at them (I don't even mind if the arms are outstretched and end fuzzily at the wrists, if that's what you're best at). I'm looking for basic references of as many characters as possible, NOT pro art.
~Ignore that bit in the guidelines about only drawing the requested art. Trogdor is 1337 and win. However, Trogdor is the only non-requested art I will accept. The best Trogdor entry gets a special prize (but don't expect to win the contest with him).

If there are less than 25 entries by May 18:

I will decide whether to:

1. Leave the contest open until there ARE 25 entries (so encourage your friends to enter!)
2. End the contest but give a smaller prize
3. Be satisfied with the entries already received and end the contest without changing the prize

If there are about 50 or more entries by May 18:

I will increase the prize to at least double the current amount.

Best Trogdor:

Prize for best Trogdor will be determined at the end of the contest. Amount of prize will be based on number of people who entered (not a big consideration) and awesomeness of the burninating (big consideration).
No one entered for this prize.
